inspector It was a corrupted download, it worked like charm when re-downloaded! At least UFO. Still couldn't get tftd to work...

Thanks all for your time!

The Fifth Horseman The soundcard should be set as follows:
- Sound Blaster 16 (or highest Sound Blaster model available if that one's not there, keeping in mind that the PRO series is higher than the regular series)
- IRQ 7
- DMA 1
- Adress 220

Make sure to SAVE the modified configuration.

If that didn't work, change the sound configuration to use Sound Blaster Pro II (or next highest model you can choose), open DOSBox.conf and change sbtype=sb16 to sbtype=sbpro2. From my experience, it's more compatibile.

If that still fails, redownload your copy of DOSBox, perhaps use an older version (like v0.70) - it sometimes helps.

Eagle of Fire There is no way he can have a sound problem with DOSBox if he's been using the default settings...

gregor what sound card are you using? Have you tried running game with nosound? this way you can check if the problem is in soundcard configuration (maybe you need to use IRQ5 ?!)

also check if any files are as read-only. they MUST NOT be read only. so check the file properties and uncheck the read only option.
Do this as your problem seems similar to what i had until i changed the read only file attributes.

Mighty Midget It might, just might be a corrupt download of the game. Try to get another download and see if that helps.

mount c c:\oldgames
c:

(prompt c:>) (the program is on the hard drive, so no mounting of the CD-rom)

cd tftd

install.exe

(to run the program, entering the setup after installation is ready. Sometimes I just enter setup.exe, but the result is always the same)

entering the values given earlier in this forum in setup (soundblaster, 220, etc)

When ready exit program, and in DOS-mode entering the appropriate startup word (terror or ufo).

Still in DOS-mode I get back the values from the setup, and then it just hangs... Don't get anywhere. Have let the computer work for over ten minutes, and just not responding...

That is the basic, don't get any error messages.

Inspector I do have the same problem...

I have a copy of UFO and Terror from the deep on my computer, and I just can't get it to work.

I have installed DOSbox, mounted oldgames, installed the game through DOSBOX, chosen soundcard etc. and returned to the DOS prompt. I type TERROR (or UFO), sound configuration appears, and then just a total lock...

Realize that I must be doing something wrong, but don't know what...

Please help.

@ horseman - your guide doesn't cover this area. maybe it wouldnt' be bad if there was a little update on this for folks with ISO images or original CDs.[/b]
Will be the next thing I add, in a few days time.

Sounds like you didn't mount your CD-Rom drive. Here's what I suggest:
1. Remove that copy of TFTD from your games directory.
2. Add the following line to your DOSBox autoexec:
mount D E:\ -t cdrom
This will mount your CD-Rom drive (based on contents of the error, I assumed it uses letter E in Windows) as drive D in DOSBox.
3. Install the game again. Remember to configure the sound correctly (Sound Blaster - newest type there is in the setup, IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220)

Regarding images, if you record an ISO image of the CD to your hard drive, you can mount it as if it was an actual drive by using imgmount D [path to the ISO] -t iso.
Wikipedia has a list of software that supports this format
