Good one Data, but wrong. Even if systems are the same, it's still emulation, same as DOSBox, WinUAE,.... Emulating of hardware. Only difference is that DOSBox also emulates software. How can he optimize DOSBOx? |

that still doesn't say a thing about how the code is executed. both the host (winxp) and the target(freedos) is x86 code. So vmware virtualizes the instructions. which is much faster. it can be compared to the dynamic mode of dosbox (core=dynamic) of dosbox. as you are no programmer how can you claim then that dosbox is unoptimised! Remember that you needed a highend 486 to emulate a snes in asm (which runs at 3.87 Mhz) so if you want to emulate a 33 mhz machine (with portable code) a 2 ghz machine is very reasonable requirement. |

im running windows xp, if i use vmware(which does emulate a computer - albeit a computer you have to set up from scratch), im usually running dos (either freedos or ms-dos 7.1) so they would technically be on different platforms (even if 1 is "virtual" aka dosbox and vmware) all dosbox is a emulator that comes set up with an operating system alredy "installed" vmware is an emulator in that same respect except that vmware requires you install a operating system onto the virtual hardware yourself edit - im no programmer so i would have no clue how to optimize it. i'd optimize it if i knew how to code/program but i don't so i am unable to optimize it. |

vmware doesn't emulate if you the target machine and the host are the same platform. it virtualizes then. Compare dosbox to bochs if you want a real emulator vs a real emulator. But if you are so unhappy about why not optimize it yourself. |

JJXB | dosbox isn't very optimized imo. the reason i say that is my experience with dosbox and vmware(which also emulates a pc, like dosbox) and i have found that vmware runs dos AND windows 95/98se a lot faster than dosbox emulates just dos and the virtual hardware in vmware is more powerful than dosbox (dosbox = 486, vmware = pentium + upwards) so its poor optimization thats down to crap performance in dosbox.

Eagle of Fire | The problem here is emulation. Emulating anything always takes a lot of raw processing power, whatever the kind of emulation. I remember having trouble running SNES emulators with pentium machines when you'd expect an original SNES to have less processing power than a 486...

JJXB | well, when you have a slow computer, vdmsound is the only way you can run old games at a good speed (i wish that the coders of dosbox would REDUCE THE REQUIREMENTS for a stable speed)

A lot of games work with VDMSound under XP. However, DOSBox does not only emulate sound only. Only the fact that you can set up the speed of the game makes it superior to VDMSound, and it's only one feature among a heap of other... |

Rogue | Many more games will work on DOSBox, as VDMSound works only with title you were able to play without it, but did not have a sound.

Dino | I tried out about 30 games in Dosbox and VDMSound, and I can say that generally DosBox works better than VDM with some of the games
