The Niles Believe me a lot gets done around here by people who simply want in to the VIP section or people who want to stay in the VIP section.

LOL. the vip section is for VIPS ONLY .. how can you discount the idea of bittorrent for the majority of NON VIP users?
but that aside, i agree that bittorrent isnt really worth it for this site. its a pain in the behind and slow - it cripples dialup by making people upload 5kb/s minimum to get any kind of decent download. etc
You obviously haven't understood what I am trying to say. The VIP section is where we place the games that are too large for placement on the main site. By making those games available for everyone through bittorrent there would be little need to ever get into the VIP section and that would take away a lot of the help we are getting out of the community. meh elitism! what is this, the cracking scene?
i think people will help if theyre going to, not because they want vip (although obviously its a big deal to some people)

DSmidgy Maby it would be useful to put games such as Gabriel Knight 2, Phantasmagoria on BitTorrent. If the downloader must then tegister, it would be for just a few games.

Bittorent is a p2p file-sharing program. And no we have not considdered using it. As was mentioned ealier I think it will take away from the VIP section and keeping seeds going is a pain.

The Niles But we do not want people to register on the website in order to be able to download from here.

Borisenio The tracker is the server side software the website runs. If a tracker requires users to register before the .torrent files can be downloaded then the .torrent file includes a passkey which is unique to that user. Any leeching or seeding done using that .torrent file affects the statistics of the user that downloaded it to begin with. The tracker does not host the actual content it tells the client software where the other users running client software are.
The content is divided into small peices. The peices already downloaded by someone leeching the file are idealy uploaded to the other leechers. As well as the users which are seeding sending the leechers pieces of the content files. By measuring how much each user uploads/downloads to the other users the tracker can work out the ratio between the two and rules can be set up to warn/ban users with low ratios.
I have seen several websites that seem to be able to ensure the health of the torrents by policing their users.

Kosta There is just one thing that bothers me. How would it be possible to protect the tracker files? I mean, anyone could get the tracker and post it on some other side, and that would be pure leeching since the server would constatnly seed 1 copy of the file.

Borisenio How well seeded a torrent is seems often seems to depend what the tracker is. If it is one where they penalise people who don't seed then the torrents are more likely to be well seeded. Setting up client software is more tricky with bittorrent than with most p2p software because users firewalls may need tweaking.
At the moment the fedora torrent I'm using has 125 seeds to 68 peers. Whether people like bitorrent is a matter of prefrence and how much upload bandwidth they have.
I accept that running a bittorrent tracker may not be a great idea for abandonia. It depends on how willing its users would be to seed files and whether people want to preserve the exclusivity of the vip section.
