DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 11:41 AM

I downloaded them to my hard drive and tried Adobe directly (both clicking on the file, and then opening Adobe and loading from the menu), so the browser wasn't involved in the viewing.

Am using version 5.0, although it's never failed to open anything yet (which is why I haven't upgraded). Even tried a fresh reboot (Win98SE) and received the same error on all files.

If I may ask, what Adobe version are you using?

@DOS then did you tried viewing with the Browser? The Download may be borked. i use Adobe Reader v9.1.3.

Looked at them in a hex editor, they start with "%PDF 1.3" and end with %%EOF (plus hex OD OA), which is the same ending as other working PDF files.

Other working files I checked start with "%PDF 1.4", but changing that from 1.3 to 1.4 still gives the same error. :dunno:

??

Ah sorry...

No, I'm on 28k dialup and it would take a really long time to load (one is over 8mb). Plus the browser just dloads them to a temp dir and opens them with Adobe anyway.

Surely all three aren't "borked"... :dunno:

Before uploading, I checked them all. I'd recommend trying a newer version of Adobe Reader for now.

I'm downloading the smallest one again. If it still gives an error I'll probably just forget about it, since there's a lot of good info in the game's forum discussion (and I'm not through playing High Seas Trader anyway).

Thanks for the help. :)

I know this error. I believe it occurs when the file is fragmented, or downloaded only partially. Did you check the file sizes to make sure you dl'ed the whole thing?

DOS dinosaur 04-10-2009 12:41 PM

Yeah. :(

Also did a binary file compare on the repeat download (the map), and it's identical to the previous one. And of course gives the same error.
