What about text?Easy and "cheaper"
[/b]
whats so "expensive" about videos?=P

We have about 1000 games on Abandonia, we can't add thousand videos on server.
Maybe on You Tube.
Btw I love text one, it's like to read a book :)

it would be impossible to put streaming videos on server. like you said youtube, imeem or anything else would be the only option=)

by the way, did you play prince 2? its way easier to make a video or lots of screenshots of how to beat the skeleton guy on the bridge than trying to explain all the moves in a pure text

It's not a good idea, IMO, for two reasons:
1. Server space. Either you sacrifice video quality to reduce size or have huge files of semi-decent quality.
2. Bandwidth. Regardless of which way you went with encoding, people downloading those videos will take an extreme amount of bandwidth.
3. Costs. For both the server space and bandwidth neccesary, you'd very likely need a larger hosting option than Abandonia itself uses. And that, my friend... aint cheap.

well um o_O external video hosters are free. and you can upload anything you want and how much you want

of course it would be impossible to use abandonia as server

gregor 11-07-2007 10:19 AM

well since they are already laying down optical cables to each home bandwidth will soon be less of an issue.

well you could load on YouTube and then link it.

but sitll having someone go through whole game would be boring. sometimes a small clip would help like in some place where most poeple get stuck - difficult puzzle or something). it's just sometimes things are easier to show than to explain in text.

Fifth and others: What Mario1245 suggested, was a site dedicated to these Video Walkthroughs, so I don't think AB's server enters this equation.

Embeeded Veoh or Youtube clips would entirely solve the bandwith/hosting problem. The biggest problem I see would be people making such waltkhroughs.

That's a perfect example, I'm playing it now...

Prince is one of those games that have multiple way to end levels, a text walktrough like this is perfect:

With video you can't advise multiple solutions :)

_r.u.s.s. 11-07-2007 10:43 AM

i actually think its easier to advice multiple solutions in video walktrhough. and they are language-universal

How many endings were there in the last 3 Tex Murphy games? Lots! But I still like the fundamental idea. Then it's a matter of software design to make something that will allow you to decide at each fork which road you want to go.
