I reckon the game you are after is probably Warhammer 40000 Chaos Gate.

The terrain graphics are fairly similar to crusader, its set in the future and you have a squad.

Hmm X Com itself was only just released in 1993 so are you sure it was the early 90's?

It looks remarkably similiar to laser squad nemesis, but I think the sprites were bigger.

It was not in the 40k universe.

Also it was probably released after x-com apoc..
