I really fail to see how this would do anything. You only need one rotten apple and you will soon have a warez haven in that channel.

Tulac 03-04-2006 08:21 AM

No because you will kick the rotten apple, I think you should give it a chance and see how it'll work before making the assumptions (*cough* most noobs can't use IRC*cough*)...

IRC? would abandonia be legally responsible for contents on IRC channel??? i don't think so.

plenty of server and all you need to do is choose one and create a room/channel in it. everyone can do it. that's what i used to do in my mIRC days...

so warez... they can be doing them right now. you can't be held responsible for what people write on other site or for example even say to eachother on the phone. if they spread warez it's their problem.

not to mention that searching for torrents really eliminates the need to search for warez on mIRC.

hmm in fact i remember only one time i got "warez" from it and it was this programme i only needed to use once and it owuld really cost me a lot to get it. so a kind admin quietly slipped it in, so i could fix the problem on my computer.

iam for IRC too, it would have nothing with abandonia and you couldnt be responsible for it. all in all if you dont want warez spam here, users can be banned, can't they?

iam for irc

The point is not if you are responsible for what the users do, you are responsible for the content. Only the fact that if it's proven that such a portal would be used as a jump for warez groups to find people to exchange games with would be detrimental to the site, in a big way.

Any intelligent person would come to our channel, just sit there, and when a newb come and ask for a warez game the person would talk to him privately while the others try to educate him on what Abandonware is and why it's illegal... So when everyone else would be wasting their time big time, the newb would already be beginning to download his warez without even listening and you still have no clue whatsoever about who would have done it... And no clue it even been done either.

At least that's what I would do. Only knowing that the channel would be advertised here on Abandonia, which is quite a big site with decent traffic, is more than enough to attract such scum. That's the real threat in reality... If we simply had a private channel you need to subcribe to, then this problem would not really exist. But since IRC is so open, you will have this kind of problem.

Tulac 03-04-2006 08:15 PM

I very much doubt people would do that since I have the opposite experience from 10x larger site...

Well then share the site!
I think IRC is not that good an idea, just because I never really liked it. MSN or ICQ would be good, although we would have to agree on date and time. Also, Instant Messengers are more private, which is good and bad at the same time. Maybe we could just make an extended shoutbox for members only. Like a link on the forum main page, where you'd have to log in. You could also ban people from there. By the way, would this be even possible?

I did in one of the previous posts, it's an emulation site though(similar warez problems like abandonware)...

Wouldn't work, every convo ends up in children spamming since moderation is impossible...

That's what I meant with good and bad at the same time.

The other viable option would be to start out a forum. I can picture it all in my mind, it would be great if we could have a separate thread for each game we have on the site. People could come on the forum and speak about the games they like, and of course there would be a place to talk about anything we want. Oh, and since a lot of people have trouble making old games work in Windows, we should have a troubleshooting forum as well... And...

Oh erm... Nevermind...

LOL
