Have you ever noticed too that in a few years console systems become outdated? This is odd because manufactures are pusing hardware out the door that is costing them an arm and a leg to get into the public hands and then doing it again a few years later when they could still be doing some cool stuff with them. I mean, the Nes far outlived it's usefullness, but the N64! I'm still playing that thing and thinking that there's not much their doing with more modern consoles that they couldn't be doing with it still. And the X-Box. Why are they replacing that thing. They're losing hundreds of dollars when they make a new piece of hardware, and then casting it aside well before they're done with it. Sure the graphics are shinier, but when has shiney graphics that ever really sold a game that didn't have great gameplay and was a generally fun experience. Except Doom 3. On the other hand, how many rough looking games that excelled in gameplay sold like crazy?

What was I talking about now? Oh, hardware becomming out dated.

The fact is there are those who are always going to be pushing the hardware envelope, and then they push it through to the public who invariably buys it up because they're afraid of being left behind unable to keep up with the Joneses next door. So you can't run your old software, who cares. Look at how fast it runs Solitare!

The fate of PC's is horrible, cause they end up in the scrapyard.
IMO, if somebody hates their old machine enough to get rid of it, they can always pass it to a friendly computer freak or sell it to somebody.
Either way, that person will make use of the thing.
A computer should never be trashed, only those parts of it which burned out and replacements found for them.

Well it dosen't have to happen i you keep upgrading your Pc it will never get out dated!

What do you mean by mentioning Quake 4?

Wow... far more responses than I expected already...

And no I'm not saying that there isn't a use for every part even if it isn't up to date... didn't mean that... I have a lot of friends who make patchwork computers (though they're greedy and won't do it for me without me giving them a lot of profit.... jerks) I should have been more clear and stated that for the average joe, who simply enjoys a random old school stylie game or two as well as the latest rage and who simply doesn't have the time/money/patience to tinker with their hardware...

I also am not complaining... I'm a philosopher first-and-foremost... it's just one of the many things if mused about for the past couple years and I'm looking for the views of others... there's no point in complaining unless you're willing to fix the problem...

And Icewolf: :ok: You's a cool cat

Keep the discussion coming people!

You know, I'm an average Joe. No really, that's my name. And I don't have alot of money for the latests and greatest. Still, Christmas I bought a $350 system at Wal-Mart, put a 256mb video card in it that I caught on sale for $50, and was able to play Doom III. (Same system specs as Quake 4 or whatever else you want to run.) Then I dropped a 256mb memory stick which I found for $30 on sale later and it ran anything really well.

This machine will probably last me a few years. My last one was on top of it's game for about 8 years, and without any major upgrading. (Added a new hard drive at one point, but that was it.) As long as you invest enough in your computer at once it can last you a long time.

The problem is i really don't care to play the lastest and greatest. I played a demo of Doom III just to see if it would run, but the truth is I'm so disenchanted with FPSs now that I don't care how pretty you package it up, I don't want. I'm not an old game snob. I just don't have the time I once did and I want something more than running and gunning can offer, with few exceptions.
