Hey, folks, perhaps we should finally get around to determining which file hosting services are acceptable for the Cellar and which are not?

There's plenty of tem and we should have some guidelines for newcomers what to use.

I haven't used too many, but there are two that I can speak about:

* www.rapidshare.de
Max filesize: 300 MB (recent change from 100 MB)
Deletion: after 90 days with no download

Limitations: After downloading a file a wait-period kicks in preventing the user from downloading another file for a certain period of time (several minutes to several hours, depending on the size of the file the user just downloaded).

Verdict: Good for single-CD games, but impractical for multiple-CD games.

* www.megaupload.com
Max filesize: 500 MB
Deletion: after 21 days with no download

Limitations: Limited number of download slots per country forces users to wait until there is a free one. This can prevent users in some countries from downloading any files from the service.
Also, it is not uncommon for MU to block unregistered downloaders altogether for a time, forcing them to install a toolbar in order to be able to download content.

Verdict: Avoid.

Alien Odyssey

I have had an ISO of the game Alien Odyssey sitting in my FTP folder for about a year. If anyone wants to add it to the ISO cellar help yourself.

Hi JMB. Do you have a link to this ftp? It would be a welcome addition.

It's on the Abandonia FTP site. We were going to put it in the Games Preservation Project last year. Do you have access to Abandonia FTP? If not maybe Fifth Horseman would grab it. I don't have an account anywhere to upload it to. It is zipped with 7z and is 320 MB. Was something like 480 MB before I zipped it. The manual (PDF) is there also.

I also have an ISO of Azrael's Tear. That one is on my hard drive here and was actually in the GPP. If there are no plans to bring the GPP back you should ask Kosta if those ISOs are still out there somewhere.

Do you still accept uploads at ISO Art? Upload manager?

GO doesn't have read access to Abandonia's FTP server. I'll see if I can get him that ISO after the weekend.

Yes, all the time. But there's no server space other than using file sharing hosts, and donated space (e.g. Dexterus). I tend to add what's here over there and vice versa. It really helps to keep the downloads active and get more people on the ISO bandwagon. :P

Yeah, I've yet to use that. :amused:
