Meh, thief is THE BEST class here.
First: it can have all the skills.
Second: it can get LOTS of money for start, and per day. For start you need some lockpick-values and rob the two vaiable houses for HUNDREDS OF GOLD, and you can play every night knife-throwing (51 silver per game, and with common sense its not hard to win).
Third: with the climbing skill you won't be stucked in town.

Will be interresting how will this guy turn into a paladin...

Currently I'm stuck fighting in the goblin camp and turning the invisible ladder to visible. Basically all my stats are good, except strenght, weapon and magic - with other words my fighting skills.

Also the magic and knight trainers do require high stats to let the player win, and as I go with this mixed-class build, that hinders me from finishing the game fast. Oh well.

But the game is surprisingly good. I just wish the fighting-skills would be easier to rise, or money would come easier.

Any class can be the best class...trust me on that.

Fair enough thats from the EGA version but the same applies to the VGA one.

How'd you get all of the skills as a fighter? I only remember being able to do it as a thief. That was one of the benefits for me using the thief too. Plus money is easier to come by, although I don't really spend it on much. The main reason I used the thief was because I felt like I was seeing more of the game by being able to break into locked houses and rob them. Plus I liked the thieving aspects. Fighter was too boring, and magic user didn't distinguish itself enough from my thief with magic abilities. In the later games, they all get their own unique benefits though.

As for making money, from what I remember, the I'd just fight monsters and sell their parts, finish quests, and I'd end every day by sweeping the stable in the castle. I never really bought much, so money was never a problem for me. I'm sure being a thief helped too. I probably bought spells and that was it.

As for QFG5, the references to previous games kind of fit since it was supposed to be the last game of the series, so it was tying all of those games together. Plus I liked the Greek theme. The voxel graphics seemed good from what I remember too, compared to the ugly primitive 3D graphics other games used. I'm not sure how well they'd hold up today though.

Compared to other Sierra games of that time, like King's Quest 8 and Gabriel Knight 3, Quest for Glory 5 was pretty good.

Well I just worked out why you couldn't do it in the VGA version (and another reason that I prefer the orginal EGA one) in the orginal you can raise a skill by one point if you have skill points in it. So you add five to the skills you don't have, then an extra one. Then take away the five, leaving just the one point in it, and giving you the five points back. Doing that will allow you to have all the skills as any character.

Thieves can become Paladins, but it's harder. You can even still do the thief only quests. But you have to make sure that you do every thing you can to get lots of honor.

Yes, I remember there was a bug in the EGA-version to do as DH86 says, but not everyone like bugs.

Now what you spend your mney are:
- spells
- chainmail
- toolkit and licence
- potions.
All of them cost hard gold, and many of it. It is SOOO much more convenient to buy everything on the 3rd day... (On the first you start in the middle of the night, so only have time to go around the city, clean the stables, get your thief-licence; on the second you should max. throwing and lockpick during the day to be able to rob the houses at night then spend the rest of the night on climbing the citygate.)
I think the biggest money-well could be spending it on staminapotions - but my advice is not to do that if you will carry your character over to the next game (your money and knives goes with you).

Just for completion, here is a link what tells what items and magic you can carry through.

QUESTION (NEED HELP): How can I beat the Weapon Master? He doesn't have attack-animation, so this seems hopeless. (I have 100 weapons skill before yu ask)

EDIT: Nevermind. I downloaded dowbox, and it turned out there was a bug towards my system. I even heard the - pretty annoying - sound of the game. Oh how much I hoped in talking characters!

Bugs I've found:
- if you make a parry with the thief leader in the knife-game you'll be stuck
- if you try to get access to your inventory in 'Erry's cave, the game quits (but you can use the item you prepared even just outside his cave without problem)
- the game occasionnly just quits when you die instead showing the death-screen
- the game occasionaly quits when you fight mantarays (they are annoying even without this bug)
- you can get stuck when you visit the castle after rescuing the baron's son (so save at the healer's hut)

Just a hint: when talinkg with Erasmus start clicking like mad when he starts putting down his mug. Else he won't let you ask anything! (This part is annoying as hell.)

The two bugs I noticed right away when I tried playing a year ago were Bruno or whatever the pub guy's name is freezing when he gets up after I show the thief sign. It happens about 99% of the time for me using DosBox and the New Rising Sun patches. Plus, I get ugly purple palette issue at night most noticeable looking at the stat screen at night.

Is there another New Rising Sun site or a page with the old patches? His site was on geocities, but geocities has been closed for a year now.

Meh, I reproduced DarthHelmet's Fighter with all skills. You raise Stealth by 5 with the right arrow, then add +1 with numpad plus, and subtract 5 again with the left arrow key, gaining 5 (!) points back. Why doesn't anyone explain me such things??

If I were a game developer, then skills would represent a x% percentage to have success, and only if they succeed they can raise sometimes.
Then with such a cheat as starting with lockpick 1 points you would have, on average, to break into 100 houses, and only ONE time the stat would raise by 1 Point! hahahaha

I don't believe this! I'm stuck trying to find Fred the Troll's nest!

Blast, blast, blast! I'm in the brigand's cave, but the only way I see is the one leading to the Minotaur.
And I could only find a picture on this for the EGA version, where it is bloody evident where to go.

Help please!

Maxor127 17-08-2010 11:33 AM

Are you talking about the hidden entrance to the brigand fort with the troll inside?

Yes, but I have no idea how in the VGA-version get to the troll after sending him away with the password.
I hope someone can guide me there.

Untill that I'll go and do something else for now. If none has any idea, I'll just finish the game anyway.
I did all the quests and so on, and before finally finishing the game by going to Baba Yaga I have 429 point (so 4 more then necessary!), 94 str, 91 int, 75 magic, 94 picklocks - the rests are 100.
I have 112 gold and 1529 silver. I'm officially rich. And I still have things to sell to the healer.
My spell levels are: 41 open, 13 detect spell, 26 trigger, 42 dazzle, 12 calm, 100 flame dart, 29 fetch.

And I hope QFG2 will bug my import and change me into a fighter for the extra quests XD
