How does the story end? I only played the shareware levels...

Play the game and find out yourself. ^_^

IIRC there was an updated version of the game which was less picky on the memory managers you had running. I remember running Z66 with XMS memory just fine....

Hey, this is a fun game! I had the demo a few years back and always considered buying the full version. Mmm, thanks!

Thanks!
I think I got this with teh gravis ultrasound card, and the menu music was really really good. but, any way to get it to sound better in dosbox?

You can increase the sampling rates set in DOSBox.conf (to 44100 rather than 22050 - altough the quality gain won't be large) and change the soundcard emulation to Sound Blaster Pro 2. Remember to modify the game's config appropriately as well.

:link: I've done a little research based on my own experiences with this game. I do believe Epic MegaGames and Renaissance drew inspiration from the anime/manga series "Area 88" when they created it.

To me this is evident both in the similarities of its name ("Zone" is a synonym for "Area", and 66 and 88 are both multiples of 11), and the artistic design of its main character (the eyes do appear to be slightly manga-esque. From the little I've seen of the character's hair, it could be blond, like that of Area 88 protagonist Shin Kazama; the hairstyle is even similar).

If any of you have seen Area 88, please tell me if you agree.

Personally the first time I read about Area 88 was in this article http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-...how/2011-11-06, so not that long ago. :p I would say it's fairly possible, since the OVA which was released in 1985-86 in Japan was published in the USA in 1992. That's one year before the release of the game. The manga itself was published some years before that.

Considering the theme, the title and the anime-ish cutscenes it's 99% inspired by the manga/OVA. There's also an official game based on the franchise. It's called UN Squadron in the West. :)
