Project Firestart for the C64 is good :)
Hell, I only downloaded it yesterday, and it's really amazing (if you have a thing for c64-games and can actually appreciate games in a contemporary context and not just go "F.E.A.R. looks a lot better and is even in 3d", that is...)...

The monsters could be a little "prettier", but the whole game is really cool, especially the "cinematic" approach of it... 1987 seems to have been THE year for this ;)

I just wonder how I could miss this gem back in the days when it was actually released...

BTW: for all your c64-needs got to C64games.de (don't panic, you can choose an english version of the site ;) )... what THEY don't have, you're not likely to get ANYWHERE...

You know it's actually in theory impossible to be scared by a C64 game.
In fact, I was only once scared, and it was a text-based game.

Well, if you think that a "scare factor" can only be achievd through visual and acustical means, yes, then I guess you are right.

But there are also people who think that suspense, tension, surprising turns of events and most of all one's own imagination can also be really "scary"... and in that case it's rather unimportant if you play a C64- or a X-Box 360-game...

BTW.: Try downloading "Friday the 13th" for a C64-emulator... laugh about the crappy graphics and sound for about half an hour, just make sure you don't get killed (avoid the black guy... or everyone else for that matter)... and report back when you had your first heart-attack... :D

Gorkur hugs his Commodore

PF is really good and scary at times. I also missed it back in the day and played it first last year, got quite hooked for a while but never finished it.

Thanks for pointing out that site to me, I'll add it to the extensive C64 folder in my bookmarks :D

It is impossible.
You can feel adreline, but until Alone In The Dark, Horror games were about as scary as a tutu.
By the way, just because I say that it's nearly impossible to be scared by these games does not mean that I don't think they're good, or graphics are everything.
I'm just saying they aren't scary.
Don't be judgemental man. :sneaky:

Nobody mentioned last half of darkness? I played it when i was 8 years old and really scared me...A really good game.Recently they did a sequel to it,it is called shadow of the servants but i haven't tried it.

- I really love Blood, although some might prefer Blood 2. But Blood 1 has that real tongue-in-cheek campy horror feel to it, and it's a satisfying shooter as well.

- As for adventures I have to agree that Sanitarium is one of the best in its kind. It's an amazing game with great atmosphere. Play the underdogs version, but if you can find it buy the CD, it's oughta be worth it (I think).

- I'm still curious about Bad Mojo, but I never got it to work. Seems like a good game though.

- Abuse another one of those classics. It's a good game with a great atmosphere as well.

- Blood Omen. It's ESA protected so Abandonia doesn't have it anymore, but try some of the other abandonware resources. I like it a lot.

- In continuation of the Legacy of Kain series: Soul Reaver 1 & 2. Well, they're for sale, it's worth a couple of bucks. I got Blood Omen 2 with my package together with SR2, but I didn't really like BO2. Sure, it's more of a challenge then Soul Reaver 2, but it has got less story and the gameplay isn't quite as smooth. I don't know about Defiance, I hope that one's better.

- Some of those great FPS'ers almost anyone has been playing by now: Unreal (1), Doom 1 & 2, Half-Life.. you know.

This game is cool and scary.
No music, if I remember right, but that only adds to the feeling of isolation. This is just a great example of the effects of atmosphere to create a mood for the game (ie Resident Evil you can take care of a zombie easily.... but you're still scared).
Only in this case they didn't have flashy graphic to make you scared!!
This game would make a great remake

Bad Mojo is more disgusting than horrorific, but sometimes it can scare you (didn't work with me)
