But it's true fantasy. And I love the music in it just as I love all the music from Westwood Studio's fantasy games.
Say, are you sure Lands of Lore 3 is worse then the second part? |
This is a tough one. There are so many good ones through the years.
Sadly I've played most of them. Ultima 5,6,7, Savage Empire Wizardry (what got me hooked on pc games) Wizardry 4(playing from the bad guy's point of view) Wizardry 8 (its still fairly new and state of the art, not sure why it got no press) Betrayal at Krondor was brilliant Baldur's Gate 2 was an immense game and nice to play online with buddies. Buck Rodgers (This was my favorite gold box game, underated) Everquest (I was really hooked) I probably have more but noticed there is an adventure game list. I'll have to check it out. |
If we're talking old then Quest for Glory is my fav (I know TEHNICALLY it's an adventure) and if we're talking newer then I say Ultima Online

I think it's strange Final Fantasy hasn't been mentioned yet. I personally prefer Chrono Trigger above the Final Fantasy saga but Final Fantasy is certainly a worthy second place.
Also who doesn't love Heroes Of Might And Magic? Does it qualify as an RPG, well maybe it doesn't as play is limited... And what about Jagged Alliance, a great mixture of Roleplay and tactical combat! .... :) |

It's Awesome! |
Well I've been playing Fable which is quite enjoyable...
but I don't think i'll lable it as The Best until i've bought and played Baldurs Gate II |
Baldur's Gate II + Addon is the unbeaten champion of 2D-RPG's for me. So many options, so many items, so many monsters / NPC's - I could go on. Sadly Neverwinter Nights doesn't even come close to it...

Neverwinter Nights is a disgrace!
(i'm talking about the new 3d one... there is also an old old 2d game called Neverwinter Nights) I bought it after I was overwhelmed by Knights of the Old Republic. Characters were dull and static with NO depth quests were linear and just no fun whatsoever (and the NWN-fans laugh at morrowind for its 'shallow' quests  ) Locations were all the same (very few different tilesets) and the main quest was just plain boring. I know i've said this before, but I feel the need to press this issue: NWN is an average dungeonhack at best! |
What about Morrorwind: Elder Scrolls 3. I had that for about a week. I liked it, or what I played of it. Excellent graphics.

Morrowind is a great game (and an even greater game thanks to the mods)
but its too static. They sacrificed dynamicness for scale. Meaning that the game has A LOT of towns and cities... but nothing ever happens there and the people keep walking the same track over and over. Good thing there are mods that now add travelling merchants, and adds random citizens in town by day, and decreases it by night (and does exactly the opposite for taverns indoor) But all in all most quests are the same old thing. The Bloodmoon expansion pack was good because its quests where diverse (not just dungeon romps) plus both mainquests in Bloodmoon could be played from two different sides (good and evil) |
