*counts himself lucky that he hasn't been banned or something.

I think using the same characters and a wider variety of colours rather than using different characters, which let varying amounts of black through, would maybe work better to get the same effect...
Perhaps numbers.

That monkey is my new screensaver. Nice one! :D

First html Ascii I've done

My first ever serious attempt at html Ascii!

I've made the font a few points too big, so they look best if you decrease the text size two times in my Firefox.

http://trgt.googlegroups.com/web/dot...gYotyj7-X7wDON

It's of the Day of the Tentacle in-box poster that you got with the CD version.
The last one is from the game, where Purple gets mega pumped and "TAKES ON THE WORLD!!!".

Still could be a lot better - I need to work on the colours more now, rather than the typeset.

I like the one of Purple best.

At 25% size in Dreamweaver, they look pretty good to me. I'm going to try to replicate that, but it has started to look like a printer picture where the ink's running out and leaving white streaks...

I have a few ideas on how to make them better, but I think that I'm kind of getting to the limit of what I can do with Ascii - simpler is starting to look better!
Maybe searching the internet for new artists can give me some inspiration and teach me some new techniques.

There's got to be some of the old people still doing it and new ones who've improved upon it...

Here's a version of the Purple Tentacle one in its original form:
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/u...leTentacle.jpg

It still looks a little dark - its contrast and brightness could do with another tweak...

----
I just look at the stats for my photobucket accounts...
The one that I use for here, the same one I use for my Sniper Elite clan, has more views of Sergeant Sarah Winters' portrait than all the other pictures put together!

Mostly from other Sniper Elite clan sites - specifically Gentlemen of the Scope! LOL That just sounds pervy! And they're supposed to be the "best" players.
Well, they do design a lot of the game's stuff and mods, etc...

There have been hundreds of views of her, where the user originated from Abandonia!
I will tell her that she has many admirers in the world of computer games.

Wow, your Purple Tencacle is amazing :3:
Must have taken you ages though :max:

Acethor 15-05-2009 02:46 AM

Pete what program are you using for the purple tentacle and ugly monkey ones?

Saccade 15-05-2009 04:09 AM

Ace - go to http://archives.thebbs.org/ra107c.htm
That's the best place to get tools like the ones I use.

There are, however, loads of other programmes that you can use - if you can find the ones I'm missing and post the links, I'd be grateful!
Image to Ascii programmes don't seem as abundant as they used to be...

I use several of the tools, as they're really not very good at doing the job and you always have to go in and clean up.
A lot of them don't use symbols and only letters which is really bad - it can take ages to go in and change all the j's to ; or , and r's to ' if you think it needs it.

They work best on images that are 800x600+ which sucks for thumbnails or digital camera images which are smaller because, when you enlarge them up to that size, they look rubbish!

The first one I use is called The Draw, which is a Freeware Dos Ascii/Ansii editor.
It's pretty old, but you can probably still find it.

The next is called GIFSCII and is pretty good at changing images to Ascii.
The only thing is, it's an old freeware C programme and it runs on a command line.

Copy the stuff from this one into The Draw.

I'm going to have a try at MosASCII, as that's supposed to be a really good one, but haven't found it yet - the copy I knew was deleted along with AOL Homosite.
That'd be a really handy tool to have, because I think it does Ascii to Html too - I'd like to have a look at what you can do with that.
It's Windows Shareware and used to be at http://www.mosascii.com - but that site seems to have disappeared too.
If you can find that one and another called PicTexter that'd be well good.

They're the ones that I think are the best. I don't know any working download links.

Figlet uses JavE which is pretty good.

The Process:
Using the tools from the bbs archive above that you find best suited to you:

You have to convert the Jpeg/png/gif into blocks of pixels, the size of text that you want. Then use one of the tools that replaces the pixels with characters (you can choose the set and replacements).
After that, all you have to do is do your best to copy the colours from the original, like I do in the posts in the forum.

There's probably an easier way, but I am still searching the 'net for stuff. I haven't done this for ages. I'll post stuff here, if you want it, as and when I find it?

I'm not sure if you can, but if you copy or quote one of the coloured posts here and use the standard editor (I use the extended one, as it hides the tags) you'll see all the colour codes.
It's best to add these in afterwards and use the extended editor.

Work from the bottom left to the top right - doing it any other way will end up really confusing and totally mis-aligned.

I'm going to try and find a converter to HTML as well.
If you find one in the bbs archive, or anywhere else, will you let me know?

http://www.jdneff.com/ascii2.php
I used to use this one, but you couldn't copy the text out as it wouldn't keep the colours! Kinda defeats the purpose.
It was really designed for pure html. I never really got into html ascii (I was too young to start being interested in anything more than Basic really) at the time - didn't get into html until I was nearly 18 - and now I see how it could be really handy - but even this has gone too :(

Seems that Ascii is dying out on the 'net these days...
All the old places I've looked either haven't been updated for years or are 404 I'm dead.

I will keep looking...

----

I've found that you can use Dreamweaver to import wysiwyg text colours from Fireworks.
Makes html conversion a lot easier...

Course, matey.
If you can find me a picture of a Koala that's straight on, that'd be helpful.

The only ones that I can find are of profiles or isometrics... "pretty" pictures and postcards.

Cheers,
Pete

Thanks Pete :)

Sorry for not replying earlier, I was out of town for a few days.

Anyway, for Koala's head, you can use this one:

As for body, could you make it both front paws restion on a pommel of a sword? (yep, I know it sounds weird :whistling: )

Oh, and just reminder that I need it symetrical :)
