What blasphemy!!
No one has posted on Flashback? What is wrong with the world!! This game rocks, I use to play it all the time when I was younger. I was so good at this game, that it got to the point where I was like a well oiled machine playing it. Everyone who is anyone should play this game...stat!
-Sean |
indeed this game truley rocks!!! i used to play it all the time but i always got stuck on the first city level thing (not the one with the trains). it is by far the best platformer of the time and i think that they could make an update but a very simalar but with more weapons i deffinatly think grenades can help any game :D
|
Im having trouble with it.
No. 1: My sound does not work with it for some reason. No. 2 : My copy is in French :(. So i would be very gratefull if anyone could help. Btw im running on: Win 2k AMD Athlon Geforce 4 Sound Blaster Live The programmes im using to run flashback are: D-Fend and Dos Box 0.61 |
Are you saying that the copy of the game that YOU have doesn't work, or the one you installed off the site? Just trying to get clear your question up a bit.
|
The one off the site.
Sorry |
Well, not too sure how to fix that problem other than running it with DosBox. Are you doing so? That usually helps fix the sound problem.
|
Im using it through DOSBOX but is there anything specific i have to do to DOSBOX it pick up my Sound card or will it do that automatically
|
Hrm, too bad you get stuck online with ME for help eh?
Maybe you can try VDM Sound that's here http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs. |
That doesn't seem to do the trick either.
Thanks for the help anyway. |
Well, most likely someone else knows the answer but they aren't here right now. If you check back there might be some useful help.
|
The most useful tips I have, is that we are changing the archive into an English one RIGHT NOW!
|
French is easy enough...LISEZ MOI!
|
Did you say it was in French?!?! Nooo, can't be, must have gotten corrupted during the download
I recommend re-downloading it now... all the settings have been set so that sound works in dosbox ;) |
See? If I can stall them around for long enough acting as if I know something, someone else will do the work for me! Life is good...
|
Thanks Guys :ok:
|
those wore the days...me...flashback...and french dictionary
|
Damn, Flashback actualy brings tears in my eyes Loved the game so much, I think I played this game with my dad when I was 7 or 8.
|
Hi I've run all .exe but all want a safty check (word at page x line y etc).
What do I wrong? |
You should run the fltflash.com file!
|
This game basically introduced me to console style games. I had always been a straight PC gamer until this game hit. I've always been a bit of a pc game snob in some ways(xcept for the wonderful atari 2600 and 5200) but Flashback had something about it that made it stand above the rest of those games. I have not thought about it in many many years until I saw this post.
|
Anybody know how to jump sideways in this game?
|
Nevermind. Found it out. Talking 'bout unnatural controls :eeeeeh:
|
Hey guys.
Downloaded Flashabck and am running it in dosbox, but tried running fltflash as advised only to find that when I'm prompted for the word from line/page etc, it hangs for a couple of secs then the window just closes. Sorry, not much of a computer buff... :help: |

The archive was changed ages ago. It's no longer in French.
|
The Gaz Man has the same problem as me anybody know how to fix it?
|
Here's one
Second level in the city, when you have to escort that vip in the restricted area to the end of his section, when he says that you can leave him there. The thing teleports me but then doesnt move me, just teleports me to where i left him, then when i go back to the start, the door is locked so i cannot exit the level. I have completed that mission but i cannot get out of it :( |
Quote:
U got to find the other piece of the teleporter end throw it into the hole! |
Quote:
Sorry for bothering but I got a problem!I can`t run the flashback its always asking for password or what the hell!Could u tell me what to do?I know jaguar but when I type that one the program asking for something else aswell! Thanx |
hi guys
I have a problem I loaded the fb but an't pass the password check I run the fltflash and nothing changed what to do? |
This game is amazingly good! OMG
|
The game is very very good, when I was in school it was one of the best games I played the only problem now is that I can't download it from the site.
I have been looking everywhere for this game. I can get as many cheats and walkthroughs as you can possibly imagine but no downloads. Although i did manage to find it for a Sega Genesis Emulator, the emulator is crap and its impossible to use. If anybody can help me get my hands on a copy of this that will work with dosbox please give me a shout. Thanks Ionize |
man when i escort the VIP he's s'posed to send me back to the mission room..instead when he tries to teleport me it asks me for passwords and stuff..then when i type anything in..i just end up in the same room..thats a serious glitch ..how do i fix this? whats the password?
|
I remember playing this on a Genesis when it first came out and thinking the graphics were absolutely amazing. And they were, for the time. This was the most engrossing gaming experience for me up until I played the first Tomb Raider. I remember playing the sequel, Fade To Black, as well. But this one is almost universally accepted by fans as the superior game.
One thing that should be noted is that the cut-scenes are expanded in this version. It seems that a lot was cut out when the game was ported to the 16-bit consoles. |
i wonder if fade to black is abandonware yet? i remeber buying it for the playstation as soon as it came out knowing it was the sequel to flashback and was bitterly dissapointed . still would like to play it again though.
|
Fade To Black is listed in the "Games that need reviews" topic, so I'm guessing it'll be on the site sometime soon. It wasn't that bad a game at all, in my opinion. But the first one was a tough act to follow.
|
This game is the best! The first game I've ever beaten! :ok:
It beats Prince of Persia! |
I got stuck at the point where u need to save the core which is about to explode and u only have a minute and a half to do it, wats the trick here ?
|
No trick, you just have to act freaking-darn-quick.
|
Hello. While doing the tutorial on the site, I downloaded this game, but not being able to get past the copy protection codes, I couldn't play it. Is there a manual or something I could use to get past that?
Since it is abandonware, I am assuming it doesn't matter that I have a copy of it, so I am assuming it is legal to get past it with someone else's manual. Tiny |
I have the same problem ^ I can't get past the passcheck even thou I ran the "fltflash".
The game just freezes. |
So umm, any help? Tiny
|
You all say that the Flashback in the archives is in English now, how come when i download it and start it its still French ???
I want to play this awesome game in english so i understand it, plz help me. :help: |
Will have a look into that... if it's true, then I have a working english one with a proper crack.
|
OMFG! Tis' true!
Actually, you've got a crossbreed of french and English versions. |
Upload yours, Horsie :D
|
Quote:
<soulless, mechanical voice> T-minus 24 hours and counting... |
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, i cant wait whole 24 hours, no way i can get it faster than that ???
Im so bored and i long for the game :) |
Server ETA 3-4 hours. Then Kosta will have to transfer the files to the main server, something only he can do, so this version might not be for d/l until Monday.
I have a link for a correct version, but not to the crack that is needed, so no go. |
Upload in progress. Estimated 1 hour until completion. Using the opportunity to upload several other things I've promised.
|
I have the same problem with the protection codes, and I had to go to a different site to get the English version. They give you the protection codes also, but the picture is extremely low quality and I can hardly tell which was which. If anyone knows where to get some good protection codes or a good crack, please help out!
|
... I've said I got a working crack, didn't I?
And it's already on the server. So wait until Kosta gets to replace the bad copy with the working one. |
Which shouldn't be far away... ;)
See? Done. |
That's good... but shouldn't the tag on "reviewed and uploaded by:" be updated to match the current situation? LOL Just a thought...
|
Fixed.
|
i really think that this game rocked even more on the super nintento... 3d intro on a console back then...woof

DAMN I LOVE THIS GAME! It was one of the first PC games I ever bought, and I played it obsessively to the end. Thanks for the nostalgia. However, the PC version was always a little unstable, and I never could get the videos to work, so for a flawless experience I would recommend getting a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis (or emulator thereof).
|
hi people,
Im stuck at the beginning of the 2nd level!! please help me! How can I get to the upper plataform?? The little man just cant reach it! :P please help me!! thx!! sry about my poor english :( bye. |
First run, then jump. It gives you better range and height.
That part of the game is rather annoying, BTW. |

I get to the plase with 30 seconds left but I dont know where to put the damn card!! Where should I put it? this is making me crazy!!! :wall: Thanks.. |
Does anyone have the SNES Version of the game? I always liked playing it on SNES. Never actually played it on PC. :not_ok:
|
PC Version doesnt work for me =-/
The Crack doesnt work! |
Hi all,
I downloaded Flashback yesterday but I can't extract it. Whenever I try I get the error "File skipped unknown compression method.". The folders are created but no files are extracted. I downloaded it again just in case the file was corrupted during the original download, but the same thing happens. I've downloaded severel other files from this site and they all unpacked with no problems. I'm wondering if the file on the server has been corrupted. Anybody else having this problem? I'm running XP pro and I'm just using the extract wizard to try and extract it. Thanks. Great site by the way - found some real gems on here! |
Get the newest version of WinZip or WinRar maybe? It's a good idea, even if it doesn't solve this particular problem. ;)
|
It was packed with 7Zip. Try that - OR - Total Commander, which does the job in a pinch too.
|

When you walk in the room with terminal, you should notice while walking next to it it will say 'terminal', click action key, it will tell you that you can place it there. Use card and place it. It worked for me.

I've seen people getting problems with jumps and "high plataforms" There's a nice trick how to run then jump with 100% accuracy!! Very easy, when you start running just release the directional. (keep the SHIFT/Action button held!!) If you did correct, Conrad will jump by himself in the first "plataform" in his way. And the game has several "tricks" with the pistol, like drawing it in the middle of a jump, when you are climbing, etc. Just try it out!! BTW, the game is awesome! it deserves 5 instead of 4!! |
Just added the manual (in PDF) for the game. Thanks goes to Alex for supplying it :ok:

hi
in the second city where u escort the vip to res area 2 i have a problem when i finished the job he says thanks bla bla but the thing doestnt teleportme and when i get to the beginnin the door is closed and i cannot go in so tell me what to do it askes me some kind of protection code :Titan: |
check out http://membres.lycos.fr/cyxdown/reminiscence/ it's sort of a VM for flashback. Testing it right now...

If you fail to enter the code, then the situation you described will happen. |
Does anybody know cheats for cd-version of Flashback (i'm tired of playing second level - it's soo long) i'd search many sites which devote to that stuff ,but haven't found anything .
|
 You... have... the... CD... version?
Could you tell what has been improved from the floppy one there? And how much does the game take up on the CD? I'd say that the codes should be the same as for the floppy PC version. |
Quote:
What's added to cd version : 3d rendered cut scenes instead of 2d (then probably it was *innovative* ) , new background sounds & speech ,game itself is same ,maybe something else . Game take up about 225 Mb ( 75 Mb in archive at maximum compression). I could post some screens if you want. |
Quote:
|
On the second level at the start, I can't seem to run and jump to the upper platform. I always keep missing. Anyone know a better way of getting to the top?

Like back in the old days, I again was just baffled at this game.
It is not only awesome to play with NICE GFX for the time.... But there always was, and now again is, one thing that intrigued me: Has ANYONE noticed how the way the character moves, jumps and hangs looks like they Motion-Captured Harrison Ford during StarWars or Indiana Jones???? I always felt that. (Only, of course they couldn't have MCed him - but perhaps studied the way he moves? or is just my fancy??????) Anyway, a must-have. great Cyberpunk-style plot, too |
I tried to extract the file but get "Unsupported compression method 9". A few of the files extract but all the others get skipped. I'm using Windows 98. Any ideas?
|

Can it be downloaded? I haven't really used a computer since the DOS age and a lot of this is new to me.
|
hi i have a real wierd problem with the game when you have to do the missions the second mission when you have done it you're ment to be telleported back to the mission room right? that dosent happen im just stuck then i run back to the door i came in from but its locked :help:
|
i've downloaded the game and used dosbox to play it, but the game is too slow. i've tried to fix it by changing the cycles and rameskip, but it doesn't improve. can anyone help me?
|
I had this problem.
Make sure the sound and music configurations are right. I was using the wrong configuration and it was slowing down bad. Go to the install screen and mess with that, it could help. |
thx a lot! now it works perfectly, just how i remembered.
|
It seems that the .rar file is corrupted somehow. I downloaded it and tried to unpack. Than an error occurs. It dosnt seem possible to unpack about 228 files from the package. Anyone else has this problem?
|
It's a ZIP, but in a slightly different compression method. Try using Total Commander to extract the files. Guess what - it does the trick!.
|
Thank you for the answer.
I will try it :) |
I'm using WinRAR 3.42 and it works like a charm when I play it in MSDOS, guess what, I'm running Windows 95:D Having graphical problems though but I think it's the videocard in the machine, old ATI Rage Pro. It flickers now and then and the distortion it makes look like an inverted C on the left side of the screen. I have a kickass ATI Radoen 7000 PCI lying here but can't find working drivers for 95 though:\ Tried like everyone from driversguide.com...
|
Flashback will work nice and smooth even on a 1 MB graphics card. I know, I had one. So the problem must be with your GPU - OR the DOS drivers for it.
|
Actually the Zip file for the FlasBack Game is corrupted.
Yes this is an Excellent game, to bad we are not able to download it properly. :wall: |

RT*PP in the thread. All is there. Three pages is not that much to read, or is it?
|
bah, this version is a bit messed up - screen border is not black (as it should be) so it looks really silly, and sounds are quite low. So I'm rather stick with english/french mix - it looks and sounds better... maybe there is a way to mix certain files from both versions to get english text and 'normal' graphic and sounds...
|
Hi i have a problem with the game (ive seen some more have the same prbl)
In the the second mission and the 2:nd i that one, when you have done it you're ment to be telleported back to the mission room right? Its a flash and i should write a code?? That dosent happen im just stuck then i run back to the door i came in from but its locked... :wall: What's wrong? And the Codes in the solution is not correct after the fist mission ive got the code COMBEL, all the other codes does'nt work!?? Is there any body that have a conclusion on that??????? :help: Thanks (or as we say in Sweden, "Tack för fan!") |

Man I remember first seeing this game for Genesis at a game store playing and I was amazed how smooth the animations of the sprites were they really blew me away at the time. I had to have this game and saved up and got a copy back and the day and was very pleased with what turned out to be a very great game IMHO.
I have the sequel "fade to black" on PS but its was no where near as good a game  I was wondering though I only played this game with Genesis controller so I wanted to know how easy it was to control on a computer? |
When you learn the key layout, it's pretty easy. Shift, Ctrl, Enter and the cursor keys are used, if my memory serves right.
|
This is a real good one.
I've played Flashback long time ago. Finished once and never played again. Found it here and downloaded at once! That's the diference about games and "Games". The kool ones remain in the memory, and this one has a special place in my comp with others like Blackthorne and Prince. C u around :ok: |
I loved this game for Genesis :ok: One thing I noticed is that for the Genesis version the Conrad had a white shirt but in the PC and SNES version he had a red/pink shirt.
Was that the only difference between the different versions? If so what was the point of it? BTW I prefer the white shirt :D |
OK, I know I am probably being thick but how DO you jump horizontally (ie, not just up) ?
BTW, The remeniscence program works very nicely, I prefer it to dosbox for this game. |
IIRC, with SHIFT pressed.
|
i also have the cd-version..
i installed dos 6.22 with dos drivers voor my awe 64 isa from the soundblaster it's a k6300 machine with some kind of 1 mb s3 pci-card.. the machine has 64 mb of memory but the sound sampling rate is about 11 kHz.. kinda shitty and the video, which is much cooler then floppy flashback i might add sorta stutters.. anybody got any experience with this? also are there update available for flashback cd? |
I think you should tro taking out some RAM. Flashback won't need much of it, only a lot of free Himem (that's a different thing). Also, 11 kHz sampling rate is pretty much a natural thing for old games. Try running the setup program, maybe you can manage better settings.
|
Yeah the sound quality ingame seems normal, the adlib fast machine setting doesn't seem to work on my sb awe64 isa.
If u try the game in dosbox better quality is possible? |
Either you just have a wrong soundcard or the sound just is like that.
I have played the game with a 16-bit ISA SB/SBPRO compatibile card and everything worked fairly well. You cannot achieve a better quality then the original one recorded in the game files, mind you. |
Quote:
I used to have the game for the Amiga years ago and I don't remember this problem. I'm not sure if it's a bug but if it is then all the versions out there have it. |
i got the cd-version iso zipped 85 MB, so how do i got thise online here asap?
|
Another absolute classic that takes me back to the amiga days. What a great story this game had. I can't remember if I completed it though... I know I got pretty far... like.. I remember doing the game show segments.. I think I did complete it.
The music was so good, on the amiga floppy version the music was on the disks as .mod files, so I had good fun playing around with them Do we all agree that Flashback was better than Another World? Fade To Black on the other hand.. was terrible. |
Quote:
Gelfo: I agree, Flashback was much better then Another World, altough the latter wasn't bad in its own right either. |
Quote:
I think Flashback blew me away more the first time I saw it playing in a game store. I can still remember being amazed with just how fluid conrad was animated. |
I guess Another World lay down the ground work for Flashback. They're both awesome, but Fb is slightly more awesomer ;)
I hope you've all played OnEscapee |
Hi all,
I'm having this problem that has been posted here a lot. It's about the copy protection. I just tried the level with the taxi (code: SARLAC) but it still doesn't work when i enter six times +. How can i solve this? I've searched the web and found a site where the codes are scanned and put on the web but they were unreadable. Please reply... |
I still have this game for the genesis... It's still pretty good. Ahh, the Genesis...
|
uh... hi!
i just downloaded flashback and unzipped it... but when i open fb.com/fb.exe, ms-dos just flashes on then closes... and sometimes i even get this "c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. this program is innapropriate for running windows...blah blah...etc." ive already tried changing the compatilibilty thingy... can anyone help me? |
Did you tried VDMSound or DOSBox?
|
Obviously not, or he wouldn't be getting this error.
|
i cant install dosbox...O_o
it goes "...not a proper win32 application..." error im using winXP |
Try redownloading DosBox first. It works in Windows XP, as was in fact meant for this OS.
|
There are parts pf the game.. that this screen appears to me... and it bugs some game stuffs like.. teleportation after a job complete (in New Washington)
someone knows how to disable this? http://img306.imageshack.us/img306/4382/imagem39vq.jpg |
|
Or download the game from here and then read the file "Crack Notes", which explains everything.
|
thanks a lot guys
=D |
Just one problem, the-underdogs are sorta gone. So pretty hard to get the copy protection keys :P
|
Read my post just after the one directing you to HOTU.
I was noting the codes down once, but stopped doing that after a while. |
Hey!
Got the game running at normal speed under normal windows by running two of the same game. I have a problem, dont know how to load the game so was wondering if anyone could post the level codes here so i dont need to load, thnx. I can remember plaing this ages back, but the game messed up atthe end of the first level. Still played the first level a few times over though :D seeya. |
oops, by load i mean load the saved games!!!
|

BANTHA, SHIVA, KASYYK, SARLAC, MAENOC, SULUST, NEPTUN And for the expert level: TOHOLD, PICOLO, FUGU, CAPSUL, ZZZAP, MANIAC, NOWAY (I'm not sure whether it's NOWAY or NO WAY, just try.) The password for the ending sequence is BELUGA regardless of the difficulty level. |
I have edited Japofran's post to protect new people from getting the spoiler codes accidentally. To see them, you must select the gaps in Japo's post using your mouse - the codes will become visible.

ppl im stuck!!!!
the part where you kill those slime balls, three in one room, and then throw a stone to open gate, pick up the mech mouse and then teleport past the green deathly tantilising flame like thingy, and in the next frame theres a guy waiting, the gates...how are they opened, ive activated the switch at the top but only the floor opens.........and nothing else possible now...any help?? Thanks. 'Life's a glitch' |
It bugged me when I was replaying the game recently too...
Get to the bottom and shoot the door. It will then open. And that's the whole trick. |
hah, great... next time ill just shoot everything, never know a secret weapon might appear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thnx |
Unfortunately, there is no secret weapon in the game. You're stuck with the pistol.
|
well. not much to say. best game for sega megadrive.
somesay "half-life was the first movie-like game with great scenario and player-world interraction". BullSh*t! Flashback was the first movie-like game. Just imagine: you wake up somewhere in jungle and dont remember sh*t about your past. Then u start to recover your memories. U find some holocube with your own record, ur hologramm tells ya to find some dude in underground (he will recover ur memories).U hafta find the way out of this abandoned base in jungle to find this guy. first u have to collect enough money to buy a gravity belt and jump in deep pit. U find urself in a town sewers then u find that dude and he says u gotta get back to earth. U can ride in subway, talk to people, kill cops and so on. The only way to get home is to participate in deadly tv-show where main prize is ticket to earth. But u dont have enough money for ticket. so u should get a job and start working as a private dick, mail man, hitman, engineer etc. Man.. there's too much to tell bout this game! It's perfect!!! On a last mission (on alien planet) u find diaries and can read dead's people posts (just like in Doom3). The best game indeed (and very difficult to complete). I was impressed. |

One of the things that I remember having desired most when I was a kid is a Megadrive, and I desired it because of this very game. I remember bitching all day long because I didn't have the 16-bits Megadrive just the 8-bits Master System, and so I couldn't play it. |
Yeah, it was very movie-like. I'd really love to see an actual movie based upon it.
|
I played this game on the mega drive, and i got afew hints on how to get some where cool, like i completed it.
|
Quote:
If someone recorded the games, edited it to just be the cool bits and story highlights, and add player or producer commentary, I'll be you could find an audience for this sort of thing. The only problem is getting past the legalities. |
Though it's a bit :ot:
Didn't you see how they did a lousy job on mortal combat and resident evil? It's really  I'm always afraid that they ruin the original story... But I absolutely agree: :ok: Quote:
|
Do you remember that the way this game ended, it was clearly intended to have a sequel? Such a pity it was never made, wish it were *properly* done.
|
I think that with making a film of a game theres not much information for the script writer unless the story has some development. The Tomb Raider films were all about Lara and searching for treasure not character and plot lines. So if Flashback were made it probably would not be very interesting. :ranting: Wait if the person or company that made these games were asked to write the script then a story could shine. Thats a strange thing for they would not know where to start with action seqences. :Titan: |
That may be ture for other games, but Flashback does have a good story, and it could be developed even further becase the game includes an implied description of the world where everything's set. But still I'd rather see a videogame sequel.

1995 for PC, 1996 for PS1. You can easily call it precursor to Tomb Raider. |

|
Just wondering, did that CD version ever get uploaded anywhere?
|
Happens that I wrote the review and submitted the archive for it a few weeks ago. It should appear on the site shortly, altough its actual superiority over the original can be questioned. Especially the outro sequence - the one in the original was much better IMO, especially the music.
|
Well i've been using REminescence but i can't seem to get music with it even though i got the Amiga .MOD sound files, so i have no idea what the end music is like anyway =)
|
DosBox runs Flashback perfectly - WITH music, if you wanted to ask.
|
Thanx, i'll try it next time i fee like playin it (in a few years probably) cuz i finished it without music already....i had forgotten how short this game was! =D
|
You might feel like playing the CD version, though. Since the cutscenes are different, there is some incentive to get through the game again.
But I wouldn't choose the "new and improved" outro for the old one from the floppy version any time. |
Quote:
I have "Fade to Black" and it is horrendous compared to master piece that was Flashback. A earlier (predated TR by a year) and bad attempt at 3D graphics and gameplay :eeeeeh: It does connect with the ending of Flashback however. Spoiler**** Conard starts off in the same cyro sleep he entered after defeating the Morphs on their home planet in the first game. He is then however picked up while still in his sleep by a Morph ship. Its alot like the begining plot of Aliens but instead he is picked up be his enemies. |
Quote:
After FB you were travelling through a completely aleatory space trajectory -and space is immense-, so you should have ended up in a completely new scenario. Just recovering your old enemies, whose planet had been destroyed, is an exercise of poor imagination. |
Ah I see your point. I have to agree they could have handled the story better and had a huge opportunity to really go any path they wanted too.
I never did get far in Fade to black, I got so frustrated with the controls I gave up. Anyone know how the story panned out with that game in the end? |
Hey dudes, i got this game from here, and the dosbox, when a try to execute the game, a black screen show up and if a press any key, the black screem shows two this to select ( i don't know what, because it's ilegible like little squares) if i "select" the first option the program stuck... if i choose the second, the program shut down my dosbox... anyone knows what is happening??? thanx... :D
Have you changed anything in DosBox.conf or are you running on defaults?
|
I'm running on the dafaults... as the same as I downloaded... and the others games runs 100%...
thanx |
At least unusual. I've been able to run it on defaults without any problem.
I'll post my Dosbox.conf, since my settings work no problem. |
Well, yesterday i try to run with the bootdisk, but the same problem... i really don't know what I need to do :(

Thanks.

I love this game! I played it with my father when I was 9 and I have a lot of good memories, but we never made it to kill the final boss. DAMN IT! ^_^

I am so close to installing my first game....but it refuses to coroperate with me!!!
I got into the flash dictionary in DOS. The next step was to type dir again and then to type install so it opens a new window but i never see the window that is the configuration screen. What's wrong with it? |
Never mind the other problems I had. I found out how to work the game by mistake. My last questions are....what are the controls for the games and how do I get rid of a double screen?
|
Controls: Arrows, Shift for plenty of moves depending on the situation and the keys you combine it with --just test around or google for it--, and also to shoot if you've drawn your gun, and Space to draw your gun, nothing else.
As for the "double screen", please be more precise describing your problem, looks like a weird one. EDIT: You'll also need Tab for the inventory and Enter to use the object selected in it. Backspace skips cutscenes. |
The controls are different and depend on individual games. Usually there will be in-game help of some sort that will detail the controls.
I don't know what do you mean by "double screen", though. |
I am posting this message for all who are having problems with the game download file, or who are having problems running the game using DOS emulators, and for those who just want to know the best way to run this old game.
First of all, I, too, discovered that my game download file from this website (ZIP file) was corrupted. So, I went to an alternate website where I downloaded the French version of this game. I was unable to find another website that offers the English version. The French version is available at: http://www.abandonware-france.org The ZIP file from that website decompressed without any problems. I ran the game's INSTALL executable file and I was ready to go on my old AST unit with its 486DX2-66 processor chip. I could have stopped there, but I wanted to have the option to permanently save my game at any point. Others have also wanted this option, and they have labored together to freely distribute a complete rebuild of the game engine, which makes it possible to load and save games at any point. The rebuild is available as REminiscence, release version 0.1.8 (August 31, 2005). REminiscence runs under Windows, but it requires Flashback's original MS-DOS files, also. It is fully compatible with my copy of the French version, and it is reported to work with the English, German, and Spanish versions. Those wanting a copy of REminiscence can easily find one by doing a Google search. Some documentation is included with the game rebuild, and it lists the original game files that must be present for REminiscence to run. To have music and sound effects in the game, it is necessary to have the game's original Amiga MOD files (21 total). These are not easy to find, and if they are found, they will probably be archived in LHA format, as mine were. Once I had extracted the MOD files and installed them in the game's DATA folder, I had music and sound effects. It is important to note that the MOD files are named differently than most PC files; the format must be: MOD.FILENAME, such as, MOD.FLASHBACK-GAME_OVER. The game will run without the MOD files, but an error message will be displayed in the 'RS' window (one of two windows opened when REminiscence is started). Running REminiscence full-screen, the game action is normal speed and smooth, just as it would be on a vintage computer running MS-DOS 6.22, so I would expect it to run fine on fast Pentium units, although a slow-down utility should be needed. The game action is slow in windowed-mode on my old AST, so this mode might actually be preferred by those using fast Pentium units. Those who are having difficulty with the game's control keys will need a copy of the game manual, which has been scanned and converted to PDF format, and which is available at several gaming websites. My copy is 2.46 MB in size. The game manual contains illustrations that clearly picture how the game's character can be moved by keyboard controls. I definitely recommend making every effort to get the game manual, the game's Amiga MOD files, and REminiscence, in addition to the game's original MS-DOS files. You will not only have a fully restored version of the game, it will be more enjoyable than the original, thanks to the load and save features. Do not forget to also obtain the game's level codes, which can be entered to start the game at any level. I agree with those who say that this is the best platform game ever conceived, and with the improvements provided by REminiscence it can be played for many years to come. |
For the last time, folks. THE ARCHIVE ON THIS SITE IS NOT CORRUPTED. Got it?
|
-What's up everybody --
I'm enjoying Flashback through Dosbox - runs wonderfully, - but in full screen mode, the game screen has a kind of teal frame around it which is naggingly annoying -- is that dosbox's background or something with flashback itself? -- if its dosbox -- is there a command to change the background color? black would be much better. thanks -- |
IIRC, it's something with Flashback itself.

Hey, me again! I got it! some versions of WinZip extract all the files to the same directory regardless to their set location if the archive is opened and files drag'n'dropped. Therefore, the game wouldn't run. Just copying the archive to the desired directory and extracting it properly solves the problem...

Hi, im new in this comunity, im Daniel :brain:
Im playing this excellent game its a pretty good one, but i have a problem with the codes im in the second level , in the second job when you have to escort a guy to the research Center, when i finish the mission i asked for a Code 2 and Code 5 how can i get the code for this game?? I am playing with the fb.exe file because the fb.com its running very slow, i have read that fb.com its like a code passer, you just put + in the screen and thats all, but how can i do with the pass if im playing with fb.exe?? i appreciate your answers, thansk in advance Regards |
Hi,
I have a question about the last level (normal difficulty, NEPTUN): I kill the auxiliary brain, according to the diary, then throw the teleporter in the hole and teleport. Than I walk right , but the door is still closed. I tried to shoot at it: nothing. According to the solution, it should be opened. Did I miss something? Thanks for your replies, Skogkatt |

Another thing you can do is to write down the codes you get using FB.com. Final solution - play the CD version of the game which does not include copy protection at all. Hmm... one of these days I wonder if I could combine files from both versions. Guess I'll give that a try. Quote:

Did you download the game from Abandonia?
Did you use Dosbox to run it? |
ah, i cant pass the very beginning of 2nd level!! It just does not reach to the upper platform from midst one. In solution it writes run and jump, and it's the same thing i do but it just doesn't work. Any recommends?
|
If you run and then release the Right/Left arrow but keep Shift pressed so you keep running, you'll automatically jump and take hold of any platform above and in front of you with no need to press any key for jumping. Actually if you try to jump pressing Up you won't reach that high. I think it went like that.
|
Verified. just press shift, run, release dir. key, keep shift pressed, hook onto platform, continue as normal.
As for not jumping high enough, i didn't have any problems with manual jumping... odd. |

I've got the problem at the final level of the game. I killed the primary brain (The GUTS Hanging Down From The Ceiling) and then I went right, killed both Slimes, rolled through the force filed, left the atomic charge, hit the switch and then I teleported to the door to the ship hangar. But the door are still closed?!? Did I miss something? Thank you for all the help |
When you hit the switch, wait for the lift to go down. Teleport out when the explosions start.

Clear the Read-only attribute from the game directory and any files in it.
Also, crank up the spund volume in Windows. Flashback's music and sound aren't too loud, so if your sound volume is low they may be too weak to hear. |

First level sound problem
Does anyone else get this: on the first level when I put my cartridge thingy into the machine (in the jungle), it produces a continuous low humming noise that won't go away at all, litterally until I quit dosbox by typing "exit". Some kind of bug?
(I have my sound set to SoundBlaster and my music set to MT32 via SoundBlaster with midi support....other options for music make the game run really slowly) Thanks for any help, the solution might be to edit/shorten/remove or replace that particular sound file, but before I go there I thought I'd check with you lot. :dunno: |
PLEASE Help !
On the second level when you have to do jobs in order to get money, on one of them you have to escort some dude to the "research centre". Upon completing the mission the screen where it asks me to type in a validation code appeared again so I pressed enter to get rid of it (becuase of course the game has been cracked) two more times the screen appeard and after pressing enter for a third time, instead of teleporting back to the in-game job centre so that I can progress through the game. Nothing happened, I was unable to leave the level.
Please let me know if anyone else got this because it means that the game is unplayable past this point. :wall: |
ignore that
Sorted it now I just needed to press the "+" key to generate the code. Cheers.

Midi/Adlib reverb problem
I don't want to bang on and on about my problems but I'm still getting a continuous midi tone whenever I come out of a cut scene. The noise only ends when dosbox closes. I have been messing about with the midi/adlib options aswell as playing around with cycles in the conf file and so far nothing corrects it.
Really appreciate any help. |

The actual copy protection codes are listed in the manual, BTW. |
I remember that a long time ago I briefly played the first level (jungle), and I did something I can't remember but the character ended up in an area covered with fog that had two or three aliens. Shortly after this, the character perished and the level restarted.
Recently, I played this game a bit again (the very same version as the first time), and completed a couple of levels, yet I could not find that area on level 1 at all. Either this as a bug, or a secret, or I'm missing something, or I'm not remembering it correctly and it was some other game..? |
"Aliens" as in the hulking mutants present all over the first level, or "aliens" as in the alien "morphs" who normally only appear in the fourth or so level?
I can think of only one thing you could have done at this stage in the game, and that's the wall-walking glitch - IIRC, to trigger it run away from a wall, then change direction as soon as possible (don't remember if you're supposed to still hold the run key or not)... and watch Conrad pass through that very same wall. |

Hey, guys,
I have the original floppies of Flashback, and decided to replay this magnificent gem of gaming on DosBox. I have a problem, though. Sometimes, when I run the game, the sound and animations go terribly slow. Other times, they go blazingly fast and can't do anything either. Both times, DosBox was emulating 3000 cycles per second. Toying with the ammount of emulated cycles does no good. As it goes as fast (or as slow) as it was when I started the game. Any suggestion? |
I don't know about that problem, but I'd say 3,000 is far too low. Regardless of whether it's going too slow or too fast, keep increasing (not decreasing) the cycles, up to say 20,000 or where your CPU hits its limit, and see if it improves.
|
I have been using DosBox for three years now and I have never found a game whose running speed is not related to the ammount of emulated cycles...
If the game runs too slow, increasing the cycles to 20000 might do anything, but I don't feel like running the game a few times until I find an acceptable speed. Let me try fiddling with the sound configuration, reinstalling the game and touching the core options. |
Ok, it seems that Flashback tries to adjust timings at the startup of the game, most times ignoring the ammount of emulated cycles.
This problem recently surfaced on the forums at vogons.zetafleet.com, and the devs will try to fix this behavior by the next release of DosBox. In the meantime, I will have to stick to the Genesis version. Thanks anyways, guys. |
That's interesting, I'm playing it right here right now and it has no problems whatsoever.
|
What Windows version and what build of DOSBox are you using? That might clue us on to what is going on.
If you made any changes to the config file, post it here. |
Damn, I entirely forgot about this...
OS: Win Vista Home Premium SP2 DosBox: 0.74 Changes from 0.74 original config file (section with modified lines): [cpu] cycleup=500 cycledown=500 [autoexec] echo off # Prepare PATH variable to access certain applications PATH %PATH%;C:\DOS\XCOPY # Mount the main hard drive mount c d:\dos\c c: echo on |
How fast do you mean by "blazingly"? I understood it would be unplayable. I've done some tests and this is what I experience:
- As you say the speed of the game seems to be fixed at startup. Changing the cycles afterwards has no effect. This is particular to this game. - If I use high enough cycles, say 10,000, the game plays always at the same speed consistently. This speed may be faster than intended, but it's not so easy to say. It's very possible that if you ran this under real DOS in an old computer but quite less old than the game, you'd have the same speed. It's very playable, I just arrived the Death Tower on Expert. - If I start the game with low cycles, for example the (default) 3,000, then as you say I get inconsistent behavior. Sometimes it's very very slow, sometimes as fast as with 10,000. It's random on each startup, and again you can't fiddle the speed afterwards changing the cycles, they have no effect. - It makes no difference 10,000 or 50,000. Once I exceed a limit the game starts up consistently and plays at the same exact speed. |
If you left the cycles and core on auto, that might be the cause.
Set cycles to a constant value, 12000 is a good place to start. Auto core is supposed to change between normal and dynamic, set it to one of them (dynamic is faster, but if you have issues with it then switch to normal). |
Is it just me, or is jumping to an above platform not possible? Well it must be... but whenever I try to run and jump to an above platform I fall an inch short and just can't seem to make it. He doesn't even look particularly close to making it, just seems out of reach. This is leaving me stuck on the second level, at the start which looks like this (jumping from the middle ledge to the top):
.....|_______________ ...................................___| ___________________Lift___| .............................|....| .............................|....| ....................._____|....| .....................|_EG_____| I watched a youtube run through and as far as I can tell I'm doing the same thing as in the video. Also noticed a bit on the video from the first level where he run and jumps to the ledge left of the guard leading up to the injured person, which I couldn't make, and the run and jump from just before the lift (on the above) to the ledge above which I also fall short of. It's just this one type of jump I can't seem to make. |
That should be explained somewhere in the manual, but IIRC: start running, then let go of the directional button and hold the action button. The jump will be automatic.
|
Aha... I've got it now. Yeah I was pressing up at the end to jump but it is automatic. Thanks.
|
I finish this game today. Great feeling!
I just use help from a Let's play videos from youtube when I didn't know what to do. For example to find the final elevator platform who couldn't see. ;) Good game, although I like Another World a lot more. Saludos! |
Copy protection problem after Mission 2
For those of you having problems with the password protection following the teleporter after Mission 2, I had the same problem.
It turned out that after navigating to the .exe file and running the game through DOSBOX, I was running fb.exe. The game runs okay, but the password request using the '+' sign on the number pad did not work after mission 2, leaving me stuck in the restricted area. If however, I ran fb.com (in the same folder) instead of fb.exe, the password is accepted just fine, all the way through the game. Hope this helps. |
I've tried running this with dosbox but no dice. The fb.exe produces a frozen frame, the fb.com returns 'couldn't find fb.exe' although they are in the same folder and I haven't moved anything.
I've never used dosbox before so not sure if I'm missing something.. Also have tried to use REminiscence but due to the complete lack of info on how to run it I'm very confused.. Any help appreciated. |
Quote:
1. I downloaded the game from Abandonia. 2. Extracted the archive in my DOSBox C-drive. 3. Start DOSBox and cd in the fb folder. 4. Execute fb.com and the game starts. Try re-downloading the game and start from scratch. |

If you mount the folder of the game in dosbox like this:
mount c c:\flashback c: fb.com It should work. |

You should always mount the parent folder of all your DOS games as the C-drive in DOSBox, then use the "cd" command to change the directory in DOSBox. For example, I have: Code:
mount c d:\dos_c <= all my DOS games are in d:\dos_c |
I somehow managed to run the game. I'm not totally sure how I did, however. Might have to run it in the background until I finish it!

I liked this frantic game. And I got to watch this old game on YouTube. I also watched the CD version of Flashback. I found the graphics good, but kind of confusing in the final phase when he faces the aliens (CD version).
I found it particularly difficult to defeat the aliens, as they could move like worms from Another World and then change positions. Not to mention that they withstand multiple laser shots. Hey, is not all this cheating? |

You would need ability, patience, strategy, coolness, and calm in those difficult times of the game. Well, unfortunately, I’ve never been much of a fan of those moments of great gameplay. Other examples would be the final phase of DOOM where I used the lever and needed to reach the platform that came up in the middle of monsters of all kinds! Another was when I played Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² and needed to activate a lever while the spiral staircases separated! |
