Hi Folks,

Curious problem, realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny is up and running fine after crashing problems, but curiously it won`t let me save the game, it will allow saving characters, but after typing a save game name in it returns to the game without saving, the name is not visible in load game, and simply seems to disappear!

Any ideas?

Do you need to maunally add a savegame folder? I know Syndicate was like that.

DonCorleone 06-08-2006 07:12 PM

Hi, somwehere in the Realms of Arkania topic someone advises to set the folder from "only read" to "write" in the properties menu. Don't know if this solves the problem, though...

Pheonix,
I DL'd this game to try it myself and found that I had the same problem as you. After looking through the games discussion for this game I found a post that said to change the directory so that it is not "read only". To do this I selected the folder with ALL of the game files inside it (called blade 1 on my comp), right-clicked and selected properties, then de-selected read only for folder, sub-folder and files. I then started the games, saved it as TEST and when I went to load the saved game TEST was in there, so it worked for me.
Hopefully it will work for you too...

That's exactly what I meant...

Crazily enough, all of files are not read-only, EXCEPT the two folders of the game, blade1, and the temp file. If I try and deselect the read only function, it appears to accept my request, however, if I come back to the folder it still remains in read only mode, rather like the game does with my save game commands!!!

Thanks for your help so far folks, your views on this one?

Hmm. Have you actually tried going back into the game and saving. I just did to test it and my original "test" save game was still stored. I created a new "test 2" and quit out ofdosbox and restarted the game. Both "test" and "test 2" were still in there. I noticed that the folder still says that it is read only but it allows me to save.
How are you starting the game?

Eagle of Fire 06-08-2006 09:28 PM

Folders are not important, what is important is the files inside. If the savegame files are set as read-only, you won't be able to overwrite them thus not able to save either.

Yes but if you read my earlier post I did say to uncheck read-only for all folders, sub-folders and files ( on the main folder that all other files/folders for this game are in). Therefore any files that are needed for saving your game in there will become writable. I did it and it worked for me :)

If that will help, mount not the gamefolder as drive in DosBox like that:

mount c c:/games/blade

Instead mount the drive C and switch manually to the game folder and start the game, like that:

mount c c:/
cd games/blade

Then run the game, and if the previous attribute-changing didn't help, this should.

The Fifth Horseman 07-08-2006 11:28 AM

I strongly advise against mounting entire drives. The sheer risk of f***ing something up when trying to get to your games is too great.

mount c c:/games

Will be much safer.

Some games have problem to save games with mounting folders as I noticed, I suppose because they can't find out where they're saving them to as the mounted folder is neither a true drive nor a true folder. That's why I proposed the method above.

This make no sense. What exactly would there be to f*** up..?

deltree *.8 /y

or installing windows inside dosbox and going with the default c:\windows location.

Eagle of Fire 08-08-2006 11:28 PM

Hummm... Well, deltree don't exist in DOSBox (gives me an illegal command) and newbies would never think about installing Windows 3.1 in DOSBox. This is really an advanced problem.

If someone can screw his C:\ drive in DOSBox, maybe he should consider stopping playing with computers altogether. :P

Data 09-08-2006 06:32 AM

Well It has happened :)
(the windows case that is)

The Fifth Horseman 09-08-2006 11:28 AM

EoF... well, how about almost anything in C:\Windows ? My stay on Abandonia has taught me meny things, but above all...

"Never underestimate the power of human stupidity"

You never really know what a noob might do after reading your instructions.
Even less, what might happen if they tried to combine it with some "ingenious" idea a friend of theirs mentioned in a completely different context altogether.
Therefore, the less risk is taken, the better.

Scatty 09-08-2006 04:49 PM

I'm sure that's up to them to take the risk. The worst thing they'll get out of doing something stupid is learning something new. No need to watch after newbies like after children, it's more worthwhile to have own :bleh:

The Fifth Horseman 10-08-2006 11:58 AM

It's only for one reason - so they don't come back to flame us for damage they caused themselves.

Eagle of Fire 10-08-2006 03:39 PM

Alright, we all got the point. However, I need to point out that Troubleshooting is not meant to have a conversation, so we should either take it elsewhere or stop the conversation here. :)

Phoenix_Ashes 11-08-2006 08:36 PM

I don`t know whether I`m doing something wrong but. .......

Tried your suggestion of taking the read-only off the game files, but it is exactly the same situation as before- the game files themselves are not read-only, the folders aren`t and won`t change, yet still the same situtation exists, I try and save and no.

On the other situation I have been mounting to the parent folder of the game folder c:\games before cd blade. I have since tried mounting to the sub-folder c:\games\blade and just using the execute file. ..... and still no difference.

As I believe dosbox itself does not recommend mounting to C drive I`m not going to, I am sadly not technologically knowledgable enough to know the pros and cons of doing so, so couldn`t possibly take part in this discussion.

Thanks for your help so far,

Phoen.
