Ive never heard of this game but it looks rather good, looking forward to playing it. Thanks for all the extra uploads (boxscans, walkthroughs, instructions) youve went to a lot of trouble on this one and its appreciated, cant wait to hear that "organy" music!!!!! :ok:

Frodo 27-08-2006 05:51 PM

Hey Paulypoos :)

THanks for your kind words. I love this game :w00t: , and the organy music just adds to the whole atmosphere. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :ok:

Stardog 27-08-2006 07:46 PM

I can't get past the copy protection part. The word it asks for never lines up with the PDF.

Page 11, line 6, word 1 for me is "managed", but it's asking for a word starting with "i".

I've tried a few of these and still can't get past.

EDIT: I figured out that you have to look about a line up and try and find the word nearer there instead.

Borodin 27-08-2006 10:37 PM

As I recall, this was the last graphical adventure released by Microprose. I reviewed it years ago, and remember it possessing a great deal of atmosphere for the period.

Where did you review it? I would be interested in reading your review, and seeing what you thought of it. I agree with you, that it has a lot of atmosphere. :)

good idea oh lord 27-08-2006 11:45 PM

Deleting the advertisement for Rex, Dragon and Bloodnet would have saved 1,5 MB of download. But you probably knew that. :)

Nah it wasn't - the last adventure was Dragonsphere (1994). I loved Dragonsphere - amazing graphics, great animation but most of all, a brilliant story.

And finally we can play the game in DOSBOX with speech - it didn't work correctly before.

Adamg 28-08-2006 06:57 AM

Ohhh, I heard this one was good! I guess it is! ^_^ Wow, look at those colors. That has to be some of the best artwork I've ever seen in an adventure game, especially from 1993. It makes Alone In The Dark look drab! :tomato:

Oh, and fantastic work on the review! :ok: Must be one of the best written and complete, if not the best, reviews on any abandonware site!

Sonicfan37 28-08-2006 01:32 PM

Dang, can't wait to play this game. But since my current computer is too slow to run dosbox, let alone at 10000 cycles, I'll just have to wait until I get home... :wallbash:

Mighty Midget 28-08-2006 01:48 PM

Does anyone know if this game is a "pixel hunt" kind of game? I got it up and running, and it looks (and sounds) really nice, but if it's a pixel-hunt-er, I'm not sure if I got the patience.

Edit: It doesn't seem to have smart text, so you're left to guess if the cursor points at something of interest. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen. Also, the options menu says "speech on" but I hear no speech. Having a sb16, I chose sb (later).

Frodo 28-08-2006 02:19 PM

Mighty Midget

It's not a pixel hunter. Anything you need to find is quite obvious. Why not give it a try?

There is no speech in the game, but you can see text when you talk to people. There is some nice organ music that you here as well.

:D

Mighty Midget 28-08-2006 02:21 PM

Thanks :) and I think I'll do just that :ok:

Speech? Who need stinkin' speech?

There is speech in the original with A+ voice acting. I had this game when I was a teen and found it again on Lost Treasures (I think) france with speech but I can't remember where the site is otherwise I'd link it. It's out there though..and it works with dosbox if you tweek it a bit. Personally I think the speech is not worth missing as far as the phantom experience goes. Still...kudos for having the game...always a favorite of mine.

jonathan 31-08-2006 10:45 PM

Hmm, I don't understand French, but it seems like this site is pretty much dead already. I couldn't find Return Of The Phantom, or any other games for download.

Yeah it's a pity. this was the only site I could find anywhere with the Return of the Phantom CD version w/ speech. And I looked for hours...found it about a month ago. But...needless to say... it's gone now.

Can someone help me? I tried to download the copy protection book twice already and it won't open! When I open it in Acrobat Reader v4.0 it says "There was an error opening this document. This viewer cannot decrypt this document." I was downloading it in Firefox too... Is there any way to view it (program... text...)

:sos:

Wildlotus 01-09-2006 03:12 PM

I'm having trouble getting past the protection page. I can't even type in the word it is asking for on "page... Line... Word..." BECAUSE(!!!!!!) everytime I click on the textbox to type in the "secret" word, it restarts to the mainpage's "Return of the Phantom", with all the music following..

This is so exasperating because I can't wait to sink my teeth into this game! The graphics look astounding, and I have no life. I'll just die if I can't get it to work..

What am I doing wrong? Needless to say, I'm not that Pc literate. All I know is that I have installed, and am using, Dosbox to run the game, I had to update my Adobe Reader to read Erik's Copy Protection Book pdf, and now I can't even type in the password!

Please SOMEONE! Help me?

I had the same problem as you had initially. I had to go to the Adobe website and download a whole new version of Adobe reader. Version 7.0.8 I think. Be sure to choose the right OS when you download. If it's not for Mac, you can click the link directly above the dropdown menu that says something like "choose a different OS".

After you download, install it, etc then...well then, I am stuck now cos of the problem I posted before..
[color=#993399]

Wildlotus 01-09-2006 03:31 PM

While still figuring out how to type the secret word into the textbox at the beginning, I happened to click on the eye of the phantom's mask. Kinda entertained me for awhile cos it suddenly started spewing out threats. hah!

But now, I am once again sitting in anguish, wrecking my brains on how I should proceed. Anyone out there who has the same problem as me? (Unable to type the secret word because everytime I click the screen it just takes me back to the "Return of the Phantom" music & graphic sequence.

*sigh*

Frodo 01-09-2006 05:11 PM

Don't click on anything, just type in the word. :D

I found a torrent of the full CD version with speech should anyone want it.

*snipety snip*

Use bitcomet or another torrent program. Well worth the download.
Oh..and if you do get it...move the directory \RESOURCE from your install directory to your root C:\ drive once you've installed. That's the only way to get the speech working.

Tom Henrik 03-09-2006 04:14 PM

I removed your link, as I can not verify the games hosted on that site. And as it is a torrent site, I expent there could be hiding a lot of warez there. So for precaution's sake, I have removed the link.

Guest 04-09-2006 10:40 PM

Played this game when it was out. Good atmosphere and nice puzzles. Another great game by Microprose (those guys were great, they also release UFO: EU).

Wildlotus 05-09-2006 03:16 PM

I find myself wondering aimlessly in the catacombs. Every turn seems to lead to a slightly new chamber with several archways before me to choose from. Alas, I must have stumbled into the dreaded maze some of you have forewarned me of.

I have reached an opening having walked through two narrow tunnels, and have now come to a platform overlooking the sewerage lake, from the opposite end of the tunnel entrance (or so I presume). There are thick arch structures which seem to be supporting the otherwise crumbling walls of the catacombs.

Oh what a lonely place this is, apart from the intermittent skull, or rat's nest, or drain, every now and again. I save and recount my progress frequently, lest I should lose my way (or mind), through these sordid chambers.

Wish me luck, my fellow comrades, and for those who went before me, I would take my hat off you, if only I had remembered to wear it throughout this investigation.

Before the light from my lantern fades, I am in a constant dilemma as to whether I should find the easier way out by referring to a map of the maze, I seemed to have read about in prior journalistic entries of investigators who have come before me. However, at this juncture, my resolve has not been extinguished, and I shall continue this journey alone for a little while longer, before I too, perhaps, succumb to only other inevitible course of action.

Frodo 05-09-2006 11:18 PM

Hey Lotus :)

Yeah, that maze is really hard, and the sewer lake is a good reference point to save your game at.

If you do look at the maps, remember the solution is different for Easy Mode and Challenge Mode.

Yeah! What can I say.. Thank God for smarter people than myself, who could even map out the catacombs.

(If I didn't know better, I'd think it was Erik himself who pitied my miserable progress and mapped out the maze himself).

:sneaky:

The progression from thenceforth twas a breeze. It was such a thrill playing this game. What can I say.. For all sleuth enthusiasts afraid of dying, this is definitely a game worth downloading.

And a BIG THANK YOU!! to Sir Frodo, for his selflessness in rendering help, hints and guidance, throughout the course of this wonderful journey.

I have ran into a problem and I don't hae the patience to start all over again (especially with the walking speed!). Ok, I'm currently in 1881 in the hallway type thing. I spoke to the artist who paints ballerina's and I've spoken to the guy in the office (can't remeber his name). I went out of the library and went to the left into the arches. The it goes black and I have this message:

Error "ConvGet" in module "<Conv>" data: 3 16

Most recent memory check: 25400
Most recent DOS error: 2
Stack use indicator: 1217

An error has occured. Check your manual to be sure you have installed the game properly. If you are unable to solve the problem yourself, please write down the above information and call MicroProse Custome Service at (410) 771-1151 between 9am and 5pm EST. We are sorry for the inconvenince.

I remember having this problem when I first played through the game. It was a long time ago but I believe it has something to do with either XMS, EMS, or highmem settings. Try disabling the ...XMS? i think? Either that or the EMS. Which you can easily do with dosbox or a dbox frontend. I'm not entirely** sure that was the way to fix the problem as it was years ago but it's worth a shot.

edit: One more thought...try disabling sound in setup until you pass that point in the game. Just a thought. "ConvGet" sounds like it is having trouble with a conversation file.

Hmm, I realised today that something is wrong with the pdf copy protection book. The line endings in the pdf don't match the line endings in my book, and this throws out the Line X Word X part. :tai:

I don't quite know how this happened, but I have re-scanned the book. Hopefully, this will be up on AB soon.

My apologies to everyone. :wallbash:

Computers back in the day needed various types of memory - EMS,XMS, Himemm etc. Try closing the game down, and then restarting it in Dosbox. Click on Resume or Restore at the main menu. Hope this helps. :)

The game does not work on Windows XP, it only works in DosBox.
What version of DosBox are you using? You can get the latest version from here - http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs

Don't try to use the Setup files, as the sound is already set. Just use the Phantom.bat in DosBox. It should work with no problems.

:ok:

This game is amazing!

But I'm at the part where I've fallen from the Sky Loft, and the game keeps crashing. I've disabled sound and music, but it still crashes and my PC is way too slow to run dosbox

Hints please?

I'm afraid the game doesn't run properly on Windows. Do you have Dos or a Dos-mode in Win98?

If not, either reboot into DOS or use Abandonia's bootdisk.

Great to have this forum! I wanted to play Phantom about a month ago, but couldn't open the copy protection book, but only now I remembered to look in the forum - and voilĂ*, the answer is here! As soon as my acrobat reader finishes updating, I hope to finally play this marvellous game :)

That is a problem with the server. Thanks for noticing it. :ok:

Great game, but I had a few questions.

1) There's speech options in the menus and setup program, but there's no speech. What gives?

2) I've played the Novice walkthrough up to the bit in the past. I've got the frames, talked to Madame Giry and got into Box 5, got the note, and found the door. I thought I'd go talk to Christine next, like it says... but her door is shut and locked. Am I missing something?

Glad you enjoy the game. :)

1. I think the cd version has speech, but this is the floppy version without speech.

2. Christine's door will not open until you have done certain other things. Explore the place, and talk to other people first. You will know when Christine's door is open.

The game doesn't work on XP.
You need to use DoxBox, which you can get from here - http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs
Also, don't try to install it. Just click on Phantom.bat to play.

Well, now I've seen it all. A Phantom game! ^_^ I love the concept, it's very clever. The game is lovely to play as well. My only complaint is that, of course, my dear Erik isn't a villain. But, game writiers don't place too much time into thier plots, which is fin. Let's just remember who the man behin the mask really is for the sake of all us Phans.

Try at least to follow the guidelines.

Once you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake, really.

Your c:\return~1 for starters, shorten the foldername to less then 8 chars, no spaces or fancy stuff. (make it \rotp\ or something, whatever .....)

CuttyP 11-10-2008 04:10 AM

Ok, I just finished the game after roughly 2 1/2 hours. I used the maze map because I really couldn't be arsed to run through it myself. While the story and design are quite nice, the rest is merly mediocre in my opinion. It seems that watching Raul crawling through the pictures took roughly 4/5 of the time that I was actually doing something. I guess it's actually possible to visit the bathroom while our main protagonist creeps up the stairs or strides through the seat row. The puzzles are less than non challenging. During the whole game you only need like 6 different items of which you only combine a pair of them once.
Who likes a good story and neat graphics should really play this game but someone who also likes solving puzzles, which normally is the main task in these kind of games, doesn't miss much if he decides not to play this.

sleeplion 06-03-2009 12:49 PM

Full Cd Version - Not Worth Missing!

Full CD version with speech can be found here:

http://www.abandonware-france.org/lt...jeu.php?id=477

Note: Bear with the french...this is the ONLY place to find the full version right now. Click on "Télécharger le jeu" under downloads, then "Version CD", then "veuillez cliquer ici." when the pop up comes.

Follow these instructions and download the config file to correctly install the game with speech:

http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopi...=153724#153724

And it goes without saying, use dosbox.

Frodo 07-03-2009 01:49 AM

It's nice to hear everyone's voices in the game. Thanks for the link Sleeplion. :)

What the size limit on games now? It would be nice if this speech version could replace the floppy version, but it's 113MB zipped. :mhh:

The Fifth Horseman 07-03-2009 01:49 PM

113 MB is just about in the limit.

Frodo 07-03-2009 05:17 PM

So we can have the cd speech version? Great! It's smaller than System Shock archive, anyway. :bleh2:

I uploaded the Phantom archive to the ftp server. It's already edited, following Sleeplion's instructions. Just use Phantom.bat to start the game.

Anyway, take your time. This is one of those rare games that I've not only wanted to check out, but will definitely play it all the way through just to have the entire experience of it.

_r.u.s.s. 08-03-2009 10:55 AM

i dunno, i think it should be added into extras as "speech pack". not everybody has the needed amount of bandwidth to download. and it's quite a jump 8,5 MB->120MB

Frodo 08-03-2009 12:52 PM

Um, it's not 120 MB. It's 113 MB.

And I don't see why you complain, when there are bigger games on this site.

I think the speech version should be added, with the floppy version offered as an extra.

_r.u.s.s. 08-03-2009 12:58 PM

because there is no option of smaller version usually. i said there can be an alternative, the floppy by deafault and speech pack as extra. if you add whole floppy version as extra it doesn't really make much sense, because it's not extra but whole game. the speech pack is extra

TotalAnarchy 08-03-2009 01:03 PM

I think she talks about the whole game including the speech pack, not only the speech pack.

_r.u.s.s. 08-03-2009 01:07 PM

game including speech pack= game with speech pack, or do i miss something?

look here, that's how it should be done

The Fifth Horseman 08-03-2009 01:37 PM

Russ, you are assuming the speech pack is an addon. Which might be the case with some other games, but not here.
Here we have a whole different version of the game - which may very well be incompatible with the data files from the floppy version.

_r.u.s.s. 08-03-2009 01:39 PM

ok, understand now

RocknRolla1-2 08-03-2009 11:04 PM

hey sorry for the late response!
havent been on here for a couple days.

I could post a screenshot but it's quite simple...just unzip the full version after downloading to your root C:\ directory. Then unzip the config file from Vogons into C:\PHANTOM

YOU'RE ALL SET!

Don't even run install unless you want to switch from soundblaster to adlib or something. The config file sets it up for you!

Also I find what works best for me is to use a DOSBOX front-end like D-fend and set the Machine to Dynamic and Cycles to 13000 for optimal performance. Everything else can be set to your preference.

And YES! It DOES change the experience completely! I first played this when I was 15 in 1993...the CD-ROM version was bundled with my new computer...I never knew any version but the CD version and it's nowhere near as memorable without it! I still love revisiting this game from time to time.

Yeah isn't it cool?

Interesting factoid:

Raymond Benson, the Designer/Writer of Return of The Phantom is the voice of Monsieur Brie!

And notice the similarities between Monsieur Richard in ROTP and the Sultan King in Dragonsphere! Same actors for sure.

More reasons why the voices are worth experiencing.

Raymond Benson has a personal site here: www.raymondbenson.com
I wrote him not long ago with praise for ROTP and he responded!....saying it was "A welcome blast from the past!" : )

Awww! I wish I had known about this game in 1993! I was 11 then, and already playing adventure games, and the Phantom of the Opera was (and is!) one of my favorite stories.

I started playing this last night. The opera house is so creepy and atmospheric. Really loving this one!

I got the same error, so here is what worked for me:
After you copied everything you should mount the folder like this:
Example:
Your game is at E:\GAMES\_DOS\PHANTOM
(inside you have the 2 folders PHANTOM & RESOURCE)

In the DOSBOX.CONF file ad the following:
MOUNT C E:\GAMES\_DOS\PHANTOM

And like somebody else already mentioned: Change CORE and CYCLES:
CORE=NORMAL
CYCLES=MAX

Save the file, open DOSBox and try again:
CD PHANTOM
PHANTOM

If your sound doesn't work you have to change the configuration with INSTALL.EXE in the PHANTOM folder to your sound card settings.

Hope that'll help

I managed to get the CD-version of the game working nice, but I'm encountering random freezes. Literally, freezes.

Mouse freezes completely, music plays but I cannot ALT+TAB or ALT+F4 out of DosBox. I can CTRL+ALT+DEL to 640x480 16-color Task Manager, where I can end DosBox's task and return to Windows properly. I'm using DosBox 0.72 with Dynamic core setting (Normal or Auto causes severe music stuttering and FPS hiccups) and 12k cycles for smooth gameplay.

Anyone else had the same issue?

(I'm on my way to upgrade to DosBox 0.73, but just wanted to see if this was any more widespreaded problem)

@ RocknRolla1-2's "Error "-32" in module "5" data: 0 0" -error, I had the same but I got past this by simply copying the installation to root of my C drive (so I had C:\PHANTOM and C:\RESOURCE). You can mount a subdirectory straight so that the game thinks it's operating in root whereas it's not, as advised above, but I did it this way.

Hi guys,

I've tried all the various suggestions here, but I'm still getting the Error "-32" thingy... :(

What another excellent Microprose game! Did they do any bad games? Because I cannot find any!!!

What an original story idea, and very educational too! The speech ads so much, but it would be nice if the text could be switched off!

Anyway any grief and I will repeat the advice given to go to the VOGONS site and download the phantom fix, it fixed my -32 error mentioned in the post above, for example!

I gave this game a 5 instead of a 4 because of the originality of it and the bravery of Microprose in making a game covering this subject and obviously putting so much research into it!

your previous post actually contains no dots but exclamation marks only

Having a terrible problem

I'm trying to play the game using DOSBox, but I keep getting the error message -32 that seems fairly uncommon, judging by these forums. Anyway, I've done every single fix on here (aside from the VOGONS one, I can't seem to find the file, if someone would link me that'd be nice) and none of them work. Other games are working fine with DOSBox, just not this particular one. Are there any other suggestions for alternate solutions?

Ah, nevermind. Downloading the CD version fixed it.

I found out some really interesting things about the game files. Maybe you have already wondered why the CD version is more than 120 MB bigger than the disc version? As with all Microprose adventure games, the speech data is packed in SPEECH.HAG, but this file is only about 27 MB big. If you compare the other files, you'll notice that GLOBAL.HAG is 100 MB bigger on the CD version than on the disc version. But since the only difference between both versions is the speech, there seems to be no sensible reason for that.

I did some research and found some documentation of the HAG format. HAG files can be compared to ZIP archives as they are a package of multiple files, but use an internal packaging algorithm. When I unpacked GLOBAL.HAG from the CD version, I found out that it contains a file called 00GRUNT which is exactly 100,000,000 Bytes in size and just contains useless junk data, just for the reason to make the CD version bigger and to make it unrealistic to copy it on multiple floppy discs (which was an appropriate copy protection when the game was released).

After some effort, I was able to remove the unnecessary 00GRUNT from GLOBAL.HAG and repacked the rest of the originally included files. This means that if you use my modified GLOBAL.HAG, you can reduce the game's size by 100 MB without removing anything important! I have tested it and the game did indeed work without any problems. If you want to try it for yourself, download GLOBAL.HAG from my server and extract it to the RESOURCE folder of Return of the Phantom, replacing the existing file. It is adviseable to replace GLOBAL.IDX also, but this is not required as long as the file PHANTOM.RTN exists. (If an admin reads this, I recommend to exchange the files on the download archive, as this will save you a lot of traffic)

You can also use this file to remove the copy protection question from the disc version, which might be another reason why they "protected" the GLOBAL.HAG file on the CD version.

I like Microprose games, there are some common details of these games that make me less enthusiastic. Unlike the LucasArts and Sierra games, the Microprose games look melancholic with background music not very cheerful... :crybaby:

This gives me the impression, perhaps erroneous, that the main character is somewhat gloomy... Mainly in Return of the Phantom of the Opera and Dragonsphere.

One thing that left me somewhat disconcerted in this game was the blessed labyrinth in the sewers of Paris. Without a blessed Walkthrough, it is very difficult to find the home entrance to the Phantom of the Opera. :hypno:

Now, one thing that makes me happy is that if something happens to the main character, the game “restarts” at the point of “disaster”. :OK:

to fix error 32

My solution to fix "error 32" is to choose letter D instead of C to mount my drive
