I finally got my new PC! I'm tidying up the computer desk this moment so I can set it up! It's not great, I'll admit, but it's a damn sight better than this old piece of junk! 40GB HD, 2.8GHz processor, 256MB DDR RAM - that's like GOD to me! Rejoice with me, knights of Abandonia!
*dances like a maniac* |

40GB? God, thats nowhere near enough for me! LOL
But it'll get you by as long as you don't want to play any big games (Which is NO problem if you like Abandonia games! hehe) |
40GB sounds like my iTunes library. Damn, I want one of these.
Anyway, I have to agree with Morrin here, it's just nice to see people appreciate these kind of things. |
I have... 36.2 MB on my computer. Go me! ^_^
|
what theee O.O 36.2? are you serious? is it your main computer?
|
The PC doesn't even cut 2001 standards, but heck - congrats :).
I'm gonna get a PC like this next summer: 1TB HDD, 3GB RAM (atleast), 1GB GDDR GeForce 8000GTX Ultra (when one like that is out), AMDx128 Athlon Dual Core 5GHZ (or smth like that). It's gonna only cost me about 1.3K euros or smth. YAY :brain: . |
Even though that PC isn't very fast by today's standards. I can relate chainsoar, any improvement over a crappy PC is a MASSIVE relief. Get ready to play some great games on that PC.

been there, done that. I can see why you'd come to DOS games pages with a comp like that. Hopefully my next one'll be 2.0GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM laptop with an external 250GB lacie.
|
Still 36.2 MB with the internet and a high speed connection(I suppose) you fill it up in a matter of seconds...

I don't understand, really. 36.2 MB is how much free space you have left on your HDD, or...?
|
I think his HD is 40MB. That'd be weird.

Seriously, how can you even run that computer?
The same way computer's run 10 years ago. Its simple. If you dont have enough power, dont do anything over the limit. |
I'm very interested in what OS is Tom running? With some essential applications, browser, temporary files... Seems impossible to store on 36.2 MB hard disk.
|
Yes and I believe that even win95 had an installation of over 100MB, and I doubt he can surf the internet via DOS, well at least the world wide web...

Yes, that was quite the point too. Just browsing internet would be heavy for computer like that.
|
Sounds like you caught on one of those pre-built supermarket PC's.
256 MB RAM? Pssh. Anything below 512 is a bad idea, personally I invested in 1 GB and am quite happy I did so. Likely the store also gave you very slow memory - wouldn't be surprised if it's PC2100. 40 GB HDD? An 80-gig HD would cost only $5 more. And I know what I'm saying - right now I've almost completely clogged my 250-gig drive. |
Actually an 80GB PC would've cost me nearly £200 more what with all the other stuff they get attached to them. I had a budget of £350, and this PC cost me £236. You can't really beat a deal like that. Plus I got a Lexmark printer scanner and copier for £30 when I bought this. And Norton half price. What you're missing here is that to me, this PC is a HUGE improvement over what I had before. Compare -
Pentium III 650Mhz 14GB HD 128MB RAM Now I've got Pentium 4 2.8Ghz 40GB HD 256MB RAM Anyways, if I have any issues with RAM or HD space in the future, I'll just buy some upgrades. |

The very fact they gave you a 40-gig drive is in my eyes a rip-off. Actual price difference between 40 and 80-gig drive as individual parts is negligible. If you don't believe me, go to your nearest computer store and check price listings for HDD's. In other words, the store has stuck you with a 40-gb drive primarily because people just don't buy these anymore. Who would, when you can have twice that size for only a fraction of price increase? |
On my back up machine I have a 12 Gb hdd, but after installing all the stuff I need, I only have like 0.5 Mb left, resulting in a corrupted fat and files, due to swap and whatever. I can't even defragment or scan for errors on that hdd...
My "main frame" is a 1.4 GHz, 256 ram, 160 Gb hdd which is more than plenty for me, except it laughs hysterically at me when I try to run Falcon 4.0 Allied Force with full details. |
160 GB? Right now I've got 250 and 80 GB drives installed. And both are nearly completely filled up.
As soon as I can get the cash for a PSU that will put out sufficient juice for installing a 120-gigger, I'm doing that too (one waiting for installation right there). |
