Fantastic game. I had the table game. Works in XP :brain:

fodder 06-11-2006 08:30 PM

i love this game

JJXB 07-11-2006 12:05 AM

just to think i actually have a original tape for c64 of this game :P

red_avatar 07-11-2006 01:54 AM

Actually the boardgame here was called Star Quest - I have it :P It was very complicated to me when I was 12 years old, especially because the manual was badly translated from English to dutch, with a lot of English words being directly translated, losing its meaning.

Drake3 07-11-2006 02:42 AM

Odd, the game runs very fast on my computer. I am running it with sc.bat and I even tried adjusting the speed down to /1 (1%) but it still runs just as fast. It is almost as if moslo isn't working for me.

I also tried using dosbox, but the mouse acts funny. The game cursor is stuck in the middle. My arrow cursor is visible and I can move it, but the game cursor only responds to the clicks, not the movement. The game doesn't let me click on anything with the arrow cursor.

Now, I can play it in the fast state, (with less enjoyment) but I have another problem. I cannot seem to fire at anything. If I click the fire button, a yellow grid is flashed for a moment and disappears. If I hold the left click on the fire button, the yellow grid stays up, but I cannot do anything until I let go of the button and then it disappears again. This could be related to the speed, perhaps it is clicking too fast for me to keep it up. Also, if I enter the isometric view through the use of the button in the lower-left corner, I cannot seem to escape it. If I click the button again, it flashes the 2D view, then it goes back to the isometric one. As before, if I hold it, it will stay on the 2D view until I release, but I cannot do anything till then.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help in advance. :)

i have same mouse prob with dosbox (missing mouse driver maybe?)

i've tried changing the compatability to win 98 ect but still no go

any ideas chaps?

The Fifth Horseman 07-11-2006 08:23 AM

Run it in a real DOS OS and use a CPU killer utility (like Mo'slo) to slow down the game. I had to slow down my DX4/100 486 machine down to 20% for the game to work right.

Drake: Which version of Dosbox are you using? Personally, I'd try at least three, that being 0.61, 0.63 and 0.65. You can have more then one copy of DosBox installed at a time, remember.

Remember this little game from back when I still had my poor 486 (:( sob, sob).
Was fun for a while, but eventually it started to get boring.

By the way, one of the Imperial Fist order cards ("Heavy Weapon", I think it was called) has a bug that if exploited will allow you an unlimited number of moves and shots in the turn you use it.

I have MOD files with the music for this game somwhere in my archive. Will look them up this evening and send them onto Abandonia's FTP.

The Star Quest tabletop was crap deluxe!!!
I had the german version and the naming of the aliens was terrible.
F.e. Androids were named "robotlings" which gave them a neat name - but theyīre not neat...

Please hit Control + F10 to lock the mouse. Please read the DOSBox Readme for more hotkeys & infos.

Hmmm.... the category of the game does not fit on the mainpage. Itīs not action - itīs strategy (because itīs a turn based strategy game. Thereīs also a small typo in the text... are instead of area) (OK, not important, but true)
<_<

Have fun playing and always take more than one squad to each mission...

SPACE CRUSADE!

Ah...probably a really stupid question, but where does it tell you where the words you type in to get round the piracy thing at the front are?

Falcoix 07-11-2006 01:26 PM

If started with the sc.bat -> just hit enter to continue :ok:

I finally decided to join this forum, after downloading many of those fine, classy games!

I run the game with VMS Sound, and it runs very decent. Optimal speed, sound, and no cursor jams or the like.

I really like the WarHammer 40K series, keepī em coming! :ok:

EDIT:

One question, how can I exit the 3D - mode? when I hit the lower right button, nothing happens :(

Drake3 07-11-2006 03:02 PM

Thanks Falcoix, that worked! :brain:

Since I can use Dosbox now, I can run it at the appropriate speed. Also, the sound works too. :)

I wonder why the mouse was locked though? That never happened to me with any other games a ran using Dosbox. Well, at least now I have learned about it so I will be able to handle it in the future. Also, next time I have a problem in Dosbox, I will check over the Dosbox manual first to see if there are any solutions.

Thanks again! :kosta:

Edit: Ok, so I do have one more small question. Does this game have sound effects or only music? I am getting music, but when doors are opened, shots are fired, space marines die, etc. I hear nothing extra. If anyone can confirm this for me I shall try to fix it (I have some ideas) but I want to make sure I am not wasting my time.

WolverineDK 07-11-2006 04:23 PM

Awesome :D :) :kosta: :kosta:

that game ruled big time in the old days on Amiga :) is the expansion also in the game(The Voyage Beyond) ? or was that an Amiga only expansion pack with extra missions ?

Guest 07-11-2006 04:28 PM

Is it me or does this look like Warhammer 40K?

It is in the Warhammer 40.000 universe, so yes it looks like Warhammer 40K. Just like Spacehulk is in the warhammer 40.000 universe.

You can switch between music and sound effects by pressing F10. Don't know if you can have both music and SFX on at the same time though...

Drake3 08-11-2006 12:16 AM

Thank you so much!

F10 is what I needed. I don't mind losing music for sound effects. Sound effects are more important to me. :)

Hehe, both my problems were fixed using F10. (Ctrl + F10) I suppose I need to try that button more often. LOL

Shoelip 08-11-2006 05:16 AM

Ah those crazy space marines, runnin' around, slaughtering anything that doesn't look human! :ok:

The Fifth Horseman 08-11-2006 09:36 AM

That's not the way you should say it.
"Those glorious soldiers of the divine Emperor valiantly purging the Xenos filth from His blessed domains" is the proper form. ;)

Bluntman 08-11-2006 11:53 AM

This, Ladies, is an ABSOLUTE classic. Highly recommended to everyone who likes round-based, tactical games. I've reactivated this gem on my GP2X a few weeks ago. Can't stop to play a few rounds before i go to sleep :kosta:

There is a protection question when you start up the game... the manual you guys provide is just one page and it's very hard to find what word I need to provide them.

How do I find the word on
page 19
paragraph 1
line 3
word 7
?

Im still amazed so many peoples have been able to reply about the game even tho no one had acess to those codes... not from this web site anyway.

Start the game with "SC.bat", itīs already cracked and needs no codes!
:ok:

WolverineDK 08-11-2006 07:42 PM

Am I the only one who canīt select target, when I chose to shoot , and not hand to hand combat ?

Edit, I have just read somewhere else, it could be someting to do with moslo configuration. In SC.bat

Hehe I have this on a Gremlin cd from years ago, awesome game! If I recall correctly, Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge, Premier Manager 2, and Zool 2 were on the same CD. I had so many hours of fun with that CD ^_^.

Oh, if anyone's interested in the actual manual (all I saw was a one page txt file), I have it. I could scan it if you want it.

JRCOBRA 09-11-2006 10:58 AM

I like this game and I don't like this game. Think the idea is cool but this is one of those games where the computer cheats you. 9 out of 10 attack rolls I did came up 00 While the computer alot of the time hits 20 30. Other times where I did get any kinda score in the role it'd be like 01 or 03.

Like the game tips say the guy with the bolter is utterly useless. The fun comes from when you do actually manage to get a high roll and the marine is using a plasma gun and has several enemys lined up and kills all of them which the same thing can be done with a missle launcher.

I still recomend it if you have the stamina to put up with the dumb dice rolls. Even though a single game can take a really long time it sometimes can be fun. I also played it at 6000 to 7000 cycles to speed things up in Dosbox course then I hard trouble single clicking things.

The Fifth Horseman 09-11-2006 01:29 PM

That's what you have Targeters for. You take one Targeter coupled with Bolter, you have them on all Bolters.

Imperial Fists should take heavy weapons on all their troops - Suspensors allow their HW troopers to move as fast as the Bolter troops do, while Combi-Weapon and Bionic Eye make your commander an unstoppable plasma-gunner (of course, whatever your strategy guide tells you, Imerial Fist commander should be packing a Heavy Bolter). Don't forget to take Targeters on the Plasma Gun and Missile Launcher, either.

Blood Angels in turn should concentrate on close combat.
Close Assault Blades allow you to attack the enemy diagonally. IIRC, most of them won't even really be able to retaliate. Couple with Bolt Pistols and Bionic Arm for the Commander. Maybe also a Melta Bomb or Force Field. With the first, your Commander will simply FRY any Dreadnought stupid enough to come close (useful in Search & Destroy mission).

Oh, and anyone knows about that supposed expansion for the game? Was it ever published for PC version?

Falcoix 09-11-2006 01:45 PM

No idea on the expansion, but an hint for the use of the Close Assault blades (Blood Angels).
Attacking diagonally also will subtract one dice from the defender.
So itīs you having 3 light dice and an ork has only 1 instead of 2 dice. And a gretchin..... yes, 0 dice. Which is not much....

:sneaky:

The Fifth Horseman 09-11-2006 02:52 PM

Yups. So I remembered it right, at least for once.

togboy 09-11-2006 08:21 PM

The 3d view of this game feels very much like a precursor to "UFO: Enemy Unknown" and later "X-Com: Terror from the Deep"...

Neikius 10-11-2006 11:30 AM

Got that very same cd version (lotus,sc,pm2,zool2) :P Lotus3 - could not save the scores XD, spaceCrusade... almost beat em all :D some missions are just very hard, pm2... eh I suck at it :P And zool2 - stack overflow error or something - always happens in second lvl

Now to crusade - there is an expansion out there? by which name it goes?

About dice rolling - I somehow think clicking the mouse at the right moment can help, but it cannot be proven. I have had occasions when I roll good even not clicking anything. But on the overall I think I have gotten better rolls when I clicked in the right moment. Could be psychologicaly induced still --- I was quite young when I was playing this :P

I prefer blood angels, close asault blades, 2 or 3 bolters, bolt pistols, attacking diagonally etc. Dunno why, but I prefer melee. Its quite a gamble tho :P Maybe get 1 heavy hitter for swarms of gretchins? So you fry em all in 1 shot :D

You know about armor classes ya? If your dice is below the armour class of the opponent 0 damage will be inflicted.

And for plasma - it shoots straight lines, while the rocket launcher has a blast radius for shooting down clusters of little buggers (damage is dissipating with range) - careful not to fry yourself (easily done if your men are too close). Now the minigun... eh :P With that u can shoot separate targets - if you roll 6 (3+3) you can shoot 6 gretchins, 3 orcs etc. or any combination.

meltabomb+blood angel commander+blind grenades was there something more? (so you get another turn to finish em without them blasting your assez off).

the craziest thing is "Master controls" - you can close/open any doors on the map :P Killing all units that are unfortunate enough to stay on the doorway. Btw - do I get points for enemies killed like this?

WolverineDK 10-11-2006 01:41 PM

The Voyage Beyond, is the name of the expansion.

The Fifth Horseman 10-11-2006 01:50 PM

So it was out for PC?

Guest 10-11-2006 07:41 PM

I was really looking forward to playing this. But i was somewhat disappointed afterwards. I can work with the slow and annoying interface, but they did some changes to the board game, that make the result not much fun (imo)

1. Removing the penalty for SM killed, no need to choose between firepower vs. heavy penalties. I loved (as chaos player) in the board game to focus mainly on the HW chars. So the players actually started to consider Bolters. In the PC game especially for IF its always all HW.

2. Equipment and Orders for Bolters do not consider Heavy Bolters/Bolter with Axe. (This is Targeter,Bolt Pistols,Close Assault Blades,Close Assault Order) This especially hurts the Close Combat focused Blood Angels, making them the least effective Team.

3. Scanner somewhat retarded. Might been the only way to implement the whole blip thing, but i like the Board Game version better. Leads to a game where you dont scan and storm blindly into rooms and clear them with almost no active part on the side of the chaos player.

4. Bad AI. Heavy Weapons CM attacking me in close combat. Dreadnought not opening doors. Random events targeted on random squad member instead of more dangerous ones. Im not sure if the AI cheats, but sometimes it looks to me like it repeats a roll that yielded 0. But i remember from the Board Game, that there was alot of luck with the rolls. It sucks tho to keep rolling 0 with 3WD ;)

Im glad i still have the Board Game (tho noone to play with) and seeing this game make me actually consider writing my own SC :D

Fantasy Freak 11-11-2006 12:56 AM

Ace I bought this before it vanished off the shelves was gutted they didn't do the expansion on PC like on the ST. There were Space Ogres and a new weapon, can't remember what it was though.....
Also the board game even had an elder expansion check out space crusade on ebay.

Allyourbase 22-11-2006 02:55 PM

The game works fine on XP but when i select a mission and click the tick it just goes to the main menu without doing any thing
:wallbash:

Allyourbase 22-11-2006 03:02 PM

I think the game is going to fast.
i click on somthing and it clicks it twice meaning i cant do a lot of things AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

The Fifth Horseman 22-11-2006 03:57 PM

That's because Space Crusade ran too fast on machines from 12 years ago.
Use DosBox to run it, you will be able to fine-tune the game's speed there.

Yeah and now the cursor won't work...

The Fifth Horseman 13-12-2006 02:43 PM

Try clicking. The mouse should "lock on" and work normally from then onwards.

thatmexicanguy 07-01-2007 07:40 AM

Quite an enjoyable strategy game. Sure is a lot cheaper than buying all those miniatures!

The Fifth Horseman 08-01-2007 09:56 AM

Buying and painting the miniatures is more fun, though.

Guest 23-01-2007 10:56 AM

the game doesn't go 3d as it should during firing/close combat - does anyone know why

The Fifth Horseman 23-01-2007 12:38 PM

I think F9 triggered the isometric display.

Reich 31-01-2007 04:22 PM

I recall a nice tip from the atari ST version

(!!! Warning SPOILER !!!):

crushing the Dreadnot with a door destroys it instantly. Lure the machine into a doorway, stand in front of it, use the door icon and voila.

The game seems far too tedious to play today.

The Fifth Horseman 01-02-2007 11:01 AM

That works in the PC version too, if I remember right.

Guest_bobby_* 06-02-2007 11:23 PM

so once again..
this question has been posted twice before.

i can't fire at the enemy. when i select cross hairs the cursor will be locked in place and i can't select a target.

damn it..

Neikius 08-02-2007 10:45 AM

Try clicking very short/fast.

Guest 08-02-2007 10:20 PM

tried that. no effect.
also used dosbox..(the mouse dos not work when using db)
i can only open fire with my commander. but with no marine.

_sigh_

hello ppz

moslo says that it cant slow down .bat files. How can i slow down the Game?

TheChosen 13-05-2007 11:25 AM

Download DosBox. It will surely help.

Guest 13-05-2007 12:21 PM

I ve downloadet this Dosbox. I mounted a c: drive but it dont shows me the Space Crusade file :/ I dont understand this programm :(

_r.u.s.s. 13-05-2007 02:35 PM

for the slowdown: try this http://download.preining.de/programs/SlowDown.exe
about the dosbox, you need to type C: to get in to the directory which you mounted
then dir- shows list of files;
cd -moves in to a directory, where "cd .." moves one level up and for example "cd games" would move in to the games direcotry

Guest 13-05-2007 07:35 PM

jeh i know this with cd.. bla bla. but i cant find a folder where space crusade is in. you know. there is no game folder and no windows folder. But i want to play this fantastic game :D

thx for the slow down programm but it dont works

DonCorleone 13-05-2007 08:01 PM

So... did you mount the right folder? If not, then there's no reason to wonder why you can't find anything...

Have a look here...:)

Hope it helps a bit!

Guest 13-05-2007 08:25 PM

fantastic thx a lot it works. didnt realize that i have to drag and drop the game.exe on the dosbox.

Unfortunately DOSBox is for DOS games only, and you will need a different emulator for Amiga games.

Hi Guys,

I've downloaded this game and an emulator (amiga) but can't seem to get it to work, in the load up screens the text is unreadable - just coloured boxes. I don't know what to do *flutters girly eye lashes*

Reading on here it seems that there is a PC version !!! Is there ? Where can I download it if there is and will it run on Vista home premium OS ?

Thanks in advance.

There is indeed a PC version, and it's downloadable right here on this site .....:)
It's DOS, so under Vista: run it dosbox.

[Edit]
And before you ask how to do that:
>A beginner's guide to DosBox<
>wtf IS dos bOX AND DOES IT WORK ON wIN xp?<

[Editē]
Oh yeah, again before you ask: run with sc in dosbox.
[Editģ]
And the game is cracked, simply enter when asked for copy protection code.
[Edit*]
Some peeps have all the luck, simply drag sc.bat and drop it on dosbox.exe or so, the game runs fine that way.
If your mouse won't work, hit CTRL+F10 and click again in dosbox window, should work then.

The Fifth Horseman 16-08-2008 08:59 AM

You'll also have to run DOSBox at fairly low cycles, otherwise you won't be able to fire the guns.

bikerkermit 14-03-2009 07:03 AM

-BUMP-

I played this game years ago on the Amiga, loved it. Now I've downloaded the PC version from Abandonia and can run it no probs via DOSBox, but the sounds crap, not like it was on the Amiga.

By this I mean the Amiga had proper explosions and suchlike, but the PC version only has beeps...is there any way to change the sound settings? I'm running DOSBox 0.72 and Vista.

Please advise...

Unfortunately, that is just how the PC version is.

Hey, I'm new here. But I've been hunting this game down for over a few years.

I liked the game when I was young, and wanted to see if I could find it. Today, I did. I downloaded and it runs superb.

Except, there's no sound. Is there a way I can fix that?

Are you using Dosbox? "SC.BAT" and the game should run fine with sound.

The Fifth Horseman 21-04-2009 03:01 PM

... at least with what sound there is (ain't much).

Oh, at first I wasn't, but I tried out the Dosbox with your link.

Sounds are back, thanks for the help :)

Also, would this Dosbox work for games slightly younger then Space Crusade? Say... Highway hunter?

The Fifth Horseman 22-04-2009 11:00 AM

For almost anything that ran in DOS, really.

Altough I don't recommend trying to run Quake in it without some serious CPU power (note that multi-core doesn't offer much improvement - none beyond dual core - and x64 none whatsoever). :p

DOSbox is used to run DOS games on modern OS. So, yes it works for Highway hunter.

Sobek 22-04-2009 07:04 PM

Thanks, I got it working :D

One more thing real quick: Wheres the button that allows me to equip different weapons my commander and/or marines? I can't find it....

The Fifth Horseman 23-04-2009 01:43 PM

It's dug in somewhere in the menu.
I think you access it by some window with a bunch of weapons shown in it.

Yeah, I just found it.

Its in the area where you choose a squad. Put your cursor over the symbol of the selected squad, and when it starts to blink, click it.

That'll take you to the stat, weapon/powerup, and save/load menu.

566bravo 11-06-2009 12:48 AM

How do you get to play Space Crusade

All I'm getting after the title screen is "Please type in the word on page 8, paragraph 2, line 2, word 3, and then press return" no matter what I type it does this three times only with different page, line, or word number. And I always wind up in the original dosbox screen with the C drive. What am I to do? T_T:(

_r.u.s.s. 11-06-2009 01:07 AM

are you running the game via sc.bat? if you are, then check the manual on page 9, paragraph 2, line 2, word 3..

ElfQueen 15-09-2009 10:39 AM

On of the best games I ever played, And it was just as good to play it ( Live ) as a tabletop game, on different Gaming convents back in the old days :3:

Mouse problems

I was also having mouse problems when running under Dosbox. I found the only way to solve them was to run Dosbox in Fullscreen mode ([alt]+[enter]).

I tried disabling the joystick and ctrl+F10 but it wouldn't register mouse movement while in window mode.

bloomers 30-09-2010 12:07 PM

Hey, while looking up some videos of the new warhammer 40k online thats coming out, it reminded me of a game I played when I was very very young (around 5-6), after a little research I found out is name, SPACE CRUSADE!

I immediately set about trying to get a version to run, I came across this and to my suprise it worked!

Only problem is there are a few problems...

1: I noticed people keep saying press ctrl f10 to lock your mouse and ctrl F11-12 to speed/slow down the game. None of these work. They don't seem to do anything.

I am playing using the DOSbox0.74, I am running the cracked version to get past that "read the manual" password thingymajig.

But no matter what I do there seems to be no way of slowing the game down.

2: The firing system doesn't seem to work, when I click the button the yellow squares appear then disapear after letting go. Strange seeing as how I can click for movement and also for hand-to-hand combat, it just seems to be firing thats the problem.

Same sort of thing happens when I try to choose my squads, when selecting the bloodravens/iron fists/ultramarines the closing gates go up and down really quickly, and I have to get lucky and let go of the mouse at the right time to get them selected.

Most of these are minor problems, including a lack of sound effects and music.
These are not major problems, but if someone has any advice on how to get the firing system working that would suit me fine. Playing without the sound effects and awesome intro music is bearable, but to only be able to engage in melee combat is gonna make the game damn near impossible.

Edit: Never mind, did some searching on forums and found a guide to setting up dosbox with the NC (something commander) in it, this fixed all my problems. Now I can finnaly play this most epic of games :D

God bless you internet and internet wizards. God bless you all.

They only work in DOSBox.
1. Click the mouse button.
2. Space Crusade needs very low cycle values. I've got a Sempron 2500+ @1,69 gHz and when running DOSBox, 3000 cycles gets the speed about right.

Speed-related issue. If you hold the mouse button instead of clicking it, the firing mode is canceled. If the game is running to fast, it will interpret a click as hold.

bloomers 02-10-2010 10:48 AM

Thank you, but the problem wasn;t that I wasn't using DOSbox (I was) It was that I hadn't set the cycle change button to change it enough, it was changing it for 20 each time, and considering it was all the way set at a default of around 10000, reducing it to the playable 1000-3000 was going to take a long time and wasn't noticable at all.

So if anyone else has this problem make sure your cycle changer is set to a decent amount, around 1000 I use instead of 20 xD

Or you could type in cycles=1000 from the command line to set them to that value immediately. :)

If your mouse won't work, hit CTRL+F10 and click again in dosbox window, should work then.

yeah man thats work but where is intro screen, and menu, how to save and other stuffs??ty

That shouldn't be happening. Please show us what's the first screen the game displays when started.

First of all, perhaps stop using drag&drop to run games in DOSBox.
Quote:

my problem is where is intro,
The intro is ran by a separate executable - in order to play it when running the batch file, you'll have to add to edit sc.bat and add an appropriate command to it.

That is the menu.

how to save game,
You can only save it before and after missions. There's an individual savegame file for each chapter, and you can only load it from somewhere in that Chapter's setup screen.
Quote:

scaner in game is crappy, no walk sound only music
 There's no alternate scanner mechanic and no walk sounds.
That's how the game was made. What do you expect me to do with it?

After choosing one of the Chapters, click on its' logo to enter the setup screen.

You have to read the manual. The reference cards should also help.

Now that it's 2011 and we're all using DOSbox, do you guys think it would be time to take out Moslo out of the package offered here? I mean couldn't you just lower the cycles and not emulate a cpukiller?

The Fifth Horseman 19-08-2011 05:16 PM

Agreed. Mo'Slo only serves a purpose for those who don't use DOSBox and run it on real hardware. Anyone for adding it to the Programs page instead?

Sounds reasonable.
