Review and Download |
WOW, whoever put this game here is my hero, i used to have this game on my old mac... it was awsome fun, however i sucked at it and always lose, hehe im not sure if i want to download... looking at it im wondering what the hell i was doing as a kid... LOL im still a kid in a sense LOL, im not even sure what the plot of the game was anymore... i know you had to take pictures to get more crystals or something.... hmmm, i think i was six or so when i played so im doing well remembering.
Did anyone else play this when they were a kid... if so were you any good at it, i think i wasted all my film in the first lvl, but i defiantly prefered Command & Conquer when we got it soon after |
Me! I used to play it when I was a kid. I always lost too. :tai: I'd do fairly well at first, but I'd inevitably run out of energy at some point.
I remember one of the tutorial books listed keyboard shortcuts, and it mentioned some cheats you could use if you "did something funny". I never did find out how to activate those... |
Mannnnn!!!! I remember playing this game when I was like 7 years old........I really don't remember much only that u had to take pictures of dinosaurs and the videos etc.
I used to have fun playing but now Im remembering i used to suck at it ( I was 7 years old dude..don't judge me plz) Wellllll...........If u wanna have good fun!!!!!!!! Download it...If u are patient with the game u'll have a lot of fun |
Oh, by the way... the CD said it's also supposed to work on Macs. :)
Never checked that, as I don't have a Mac and neither do my friends, but if anyone of you has got one it may be worth trying. Quote:

nice horsemen!!!! :brain:
i didnt got it worked with the installation with win95, because the way it is is so: dos6>win3.11>win95 but at the booting from win3.11 is there an error. now im trying it with the walkthrough in the gamesite. oh, and thanks again for this great share! ^_^ |
oh, ive forgot to log in, its me, michi! :)
YOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOO! it worked! i only had to move everything to the c:\ root!!!! oh man, how easy!!! and now my question is: how do i refull my energy credits? |
By taking photos and returning to the base with them.
Mission photos (the specific dino you picked) and videos are worth more. Videos are worth more then photos. |
i shot only the dino that is wanted. then i go back to the base, and the hole sucks^^ my diamond in. then i come back to the diamond room and pick the next diamond. and so on. but after some time i have almost no more energy, and the alien brings me back to the base. then i have zero energy, and now? i cant refuel it with photos because i have to go first to timetravel. so i have nothing and cant get back to to the dinos.
how do i make videos? edit: you have to be a higher rank. you get crystals by finishing taking photos of tribes of the dinos. the crystals will be sold to you for energy points. but how to get energy points? |
Load one of the pre-made savegames, ones with an X at the end of the name. These were made so that you start with 1000 Energy Credits.
Also, when you complete a particular clad of dinos, you get the exact amount of Data Crystals it contains PLUS 1. So you may want to start with those clads which have only one or two species in them. I think it is possible to finish the game without having to buy any Data Crystals. |
ive found some tricks for the game in the mainroom with the options and the globe:
click on the different books in the right upper corner, you can click differen objects in this room. the yellow one is a hintboob with 2 pages of tips, an in the right lower corner are cheats! ;) |
Wow did all of us play this game when we were about 10 or what. It was on my ooolllddd Mac Performa 630 or another. It was great, although yes I don't think they play tested this enough everybody always ran out of energy.

Ok, I'm lost here. It says I have to unpack to the root, that is c:. I'm assuming it is supposed to be in the already provided safari folder, otherwise I will have lots of files laying about, so: I unpacked to c:, ending up with a c:\safari folder. I set it to 95 compatible mode, 256/640x480 (using xp sp2). Now it cant open c:\safaridata[no, it's not a typo!]\hqglobe.mov
There's no safaridata folder, only a data folder with a hqglobe quicktime file in it. Please don't tell me I have to unpack it outside "all folders". That would really mess up my tidy c-drive. EDIT: Ok, I posted this in Troubleshooting instead. Someone please remove this post. |
you have to unpack ALL files in the root c:\
DONT make a folder for the game. just unpack all files to c:\ after playing you can of course do everything in a different order. but to play the game all files have to be in c:\ |
I tried the game now, and it is a "cute little game" :) About energy points and crystals: When you complete a group, you get awarded 1 crystal per spieces within that group + 1 for the group as a whole. When I completed one of the 3-spieces group in the lower right, I got promoted, and was awarded a video camera, which can give you those hard needed energy points. It runs as long as you hold down the vidcam button, but you better not overdo it, because it will deplete your EP fast. The radar I got later is close to useless: It drains more EP than it really is worth imo. You will need a few goes, but the clues given are actually helpful (to some extent). Also, it's mentioned a hint book, but it must be one different from the one within the game.

Wow, does this one ever take me back. A friend of mine used to work at OMSI, wherer this game was created. It was probably the first CD-ROM game that I played. Their kids loved this game and whenever I was over, we'd go on a "Dinosaur Safari". (The kids even had safari hats for it.) We often would play all day or into the wee hours. We did eventually win it and get all of the critters. I found the disc awhile back and made a copy and have been playing it off and on again. It has held up over the years better than a lot of games that I've played since. Thanks for remembering this one! (I never suggested it because I thought it was too obscure, being locally created.)
One way to get extra crystals is getting 'money shots'; the closer you are and the more dramatic the scene, the more you get. Video gets you more than still shots. |
Holy cow, great upload guys. I used to play this game all the time as a kid. I was thinking about it a couple days ago and couldn't for the life of me remember the name. Thanks for uploading this, this will bring back a lot of memories.
|
*chuckle*
Just a few days ago my mother was looking through old documents to see what to keep and what can be thrown out and found the purchase receipt for this game. LOL |
:kosta:
No, wait. :brain: I really, really cant believe it. This was my first "modern" gaming experience. I played it so much, I can still remember the "wonnngggk" sound when the dino with balls on its tail accidently whacked you as it walked by. This has, I think, really made Abandonia something special for me. Like, I was trying to make a game design based loosely on the concept, and all the googling in the world didnt really help me. And here, it lands in my lap ^.^ Bravo, Abandonia! Bravo, the_fifth_horseman! |
i used to play this game in the old days when i was a kid too. not bragging but i was actually
quite good at it. the alien at the beginning used to make me laugh, LOL how sad!! |
I love this game! I used to play it all the time, back in the day. Is it sad that I remember almost everything about it even though I haven't played in like ten years? LOL. Well, I remember collecting picture/crystal things for the weird alien and traveling around in the chronosphere...I just don't remember the purpose of doing it, LOL. But I remember getting the video camera and the dino bait and the radar and stuff.....And I was always afraid of going in the water because the plesiosaurus freaked me out. I remember playing through the whole game at least once, but I don't remember what happens when you win, LOL.

Hey I just want to thank whoever put this up!! This was a childhood favourite!! Anyway I am just curious, it says my download time is approx. 5 hours, did anyone else encounter that? And once it has downloaded and the zip file is sitting on my desktop, can someone give me general tips for opening, and playing the game successfully without having to hunt through all the files? Thanks! |
I've included those with the review.

The game was originally for Windows 3.x/95, so you'd best read the following: Quote:

Mine wont work. It keeps goes to the part with the crystal room and then it stops saying saying its missing E:Micros~1\SAFARIdata\hqglobe.mov
But I checked and that file is there. Hmm. |
Been explained before - in fact in the post just above yours. You have put the game into some subdirectory without running the setup program.
Either put it into root of your drive (or CD) or run the game's setup and enter it's current location as the desired target of installation. |
i played this when i was really little too! 7 or 8 i think. if you click the yellow book in the room with the globe and the save option menu, it shows you some cheat codes, but you have to "do something funny" in order for the codes to be activated.
does ANYONE know what it is thats funny that you have to do? :wallbash: |

Hi from Holland I played it when I was pregnand with my youngest, she's turning 11 next week sorry for my bad english I loose my credits all the time by the way. start up in xp and play and run under w98 no problems...only mouse is too speedy, have to work on that here is there anybody who can show me how to get more credits, I become junior get my video and even my horn...but have to find another line of work anyway best grtz from Cosmos |
Several pre-made saves are included with the game. They give you faster access to the gadgetry and ones labeled with an "X" on the end also give you 1000 credits on the start.
This should be sufficient to get the game completed - mind you, that it's important to try and get a couple "clads" complete as fast as possible - this will give you extra crystals (as many as there were dinos in the clad plus one extra), and if you manage to keep this advantage you won't have to lose credits to get new ones either. |
hi, I'm a complete idiot.
I dont know what you guys are talking about with c:// and sub things... can I get an idiots guide to making this game play? I'm on a mac, running paralels windows 2000 professional. |
To put it as simply as possible... unpack the game directly on your C drive, memory stick or burn it to a CD. Then run it.
No idea how to run it on a Mac. This version is supposed to be Mac-compatibile, but I never had one to check it with. |
Hi, I'm also on a mac running a virtual PC program and i have seriously tried EVERYTHING and nothing will make this game work! Which is so unbelievably sad because i love this game and i think i still have the cd in the house somewhere but i cant find it anywhere and i really really want to play it and IF SOMEONE CAN JUST HELP ME PLEEEEAAASSSEEE!!!
Thanks! |
1. What virtual PC program you're talking about? Microsoft Virtual PC or something else?
2. "Everything" is a very broad definition. For all I know you could have been rubbing snake oil onto the CPU radiator ;), so please tell us _exactly_ what you have tried doing. |
Yes it's a microsoft windows 98 virtual pc program. So lets see what have i done, i downloaded the program onto my mac, tried to run it through the virtual pc program and that didn't work.
I made a cd of of it and tried running it off that and that didn't work. I downloaded the program again while i was actually in the virtual pc program and 'unpacked' it onto the C drive and that still didn't work. I tried all of this on another computer just to make sure it wasn't my laptop being stupid but that didn't work either so i'm basically stuck for ideas as to what i else i can try. |

Did you unpack the files to a subdirectory? |
I am confused, how is it possible not to run out of energy?
And yes, how do you do 'something funny'? Great game but my colours keep on stuffing up. |
Quote:
Also, the game producers have included several pre-made savegames (all are in the game archive) that let you start with better gear or more credits. Try them. |
I know very little about computers, so whatever I did wrong, could someone explain it in very simple girl terms?
Unpacked on flash drive, but when I try to open it says The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running. Check your computer's information to see whether you need an x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 bit) version of the program, and then contact the publisher. I'm running vista, and I tried the compatibility instructions for the hell of it (windows 95, 256 color, 640 x 480) but it was no go. HELLP Samantha |
It's a Win3 game.
Your possibilities under Vista64 to run the game: Dosbox+Win3 VPC2007+Win3 VPC2007+W98(SE) but..... Quote:
If you want to play such old Wingames you'd better buy a XP PC. |
Greetings!
Ola, what's up amigos? :)
I will be happy to receive any help at the beginning. Thanks and good luck everyone! ;) |

Button help
My arrow keys do not work on my keyboard, so I have to use the mouse to navigate the globe. However, it always sticks and keeps going until I am out of energy or hit the North or South Poles. Any ideas that don't involve a usb keyboard?
|
Nope.
|
One possibility is to run the game in dosbox/W3.x
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=9405 Then you van use the keymapper function to remap the arrow keys. .... or buy a numeric keypad ..... |
in the off-chance:
I know this is a looong shot, but is there any chance this has been (re)converted to Mac format? I played it growing up and it was my absolute favorite game of my childhood. It probably took me half a year to figure out how to "win" it, but even winning never stopped me from coming back to it!
I'd love to relive all those great childhood memories ("wow, Rhamphorhynchos!"), but I don't have a PC. I have a 2007 model MacBook that runs Leopard, which doesn't seem at all compatible with this version. :( Is anyone aware of where I might be able to find a Mac-friendly version that could run on this machine? I'd be happy to pay for it... |
EDIT: scratch that, it's for windows.
What you probably need to do is set up a virtual machine that can run windows 3.x - or run windows 3.x in Boxer, a Mac adaptation of DOSbox. |
Tips
I remember playing this back when I was ten on my Macintosh Performa. I still have the CD somewhere. I never could beat it back then. Supposedly it had cheats but I never did find the "do something funny" to get them.
I did finally beat the game when I was 14 and found it rather easy even without using the special saves. Some tips to follow so you don't run out of energy: Focus on getting the dinosaur you came for and not pictures of other random dinosaurs along the way. You get more for your targets and less for randoms. Don't overuse radar. Videos make you more money than pictures but don't record too long or it won't pay for itself. I think I won my first time mainly taking still pictures of target dinosaurs. I may have had a video or two. |

running in win3
hello all...don't know if anyone will reply to this, but i'll give it a shot!
trying to run dinosaur safari. am running windows 3 in dosbox. i have the game folder "safari" under c:\systemfiles in windows. when i run the game, the first few images show (i get to the room with the globe) but then an error message pops up: "DSAFARI caused a general protection fault in module ds.exe..." what does this mean? i feel like i am so close to being able to play the game and i'm so frustrated! |
What are you mounting in DOSBox?
|
Quote:
i hope that is what you were asking...i've used dosbox before to play other dos games but i have never had to use a diff. operating system within dosbox so i am a little lost...however, i do remember trying this before on an older operating system (xp) without dosbox and getting the same/similar error message. |
Quote:
FIRST, if you are mounting c:\doswin as DOSBox drive c, then everything in C:\doswin can be accessed by DOSBox. SECOND, Windows 3 does not have a "system files" subdirectory, only "system" and you should NOT put games into it. THIRD, the instructions on the game's page are clear - if you try running the game from somewhere that is not the root of a drive, it won't run properly. Put it all in c:\doswin |
