I remember playing this one a lot. Used to have a lot of fun with it. Great game. Voted 5 :ok:
|
This was one of my favorite games back in the days when i had a 386er. At that time I was a lot into old Warplanes so I really loved it...
By the way it's WWI not II .. *gg* :bye: |
Thanks.... I didn't see that. The extra I must have slipped in :ok:
|
I love this game; it’s the first PC game I ever played. (Prior to that, I was using a C-64, since at the time, it looked like they were going to be the computers of the future. Man that was a long time ago...) This game is what made me decide to become a historian. It most definitely gets a 5!
|
I remember there was talk about an updated Red Baron which would have multi-player capability and the potential for dog-fights of up to fifty planes. Anybody heard about this or did they give up?
What I'd be interested in is Aces Over the Pacific... don't know if you have that on this site. It's from the same group that produced Red Baron. I have a version of it but I'm not sure it works... Another excellent flight-sim is Strike Command, a WWII Pacific Theatre flight sim. I've got that on a disk if anyone's interested. |
ah, Red Baron, great game, I still have it on CD, it just refuses to run on my XP system. it's great that you guys finally got it up on the site, now all that's needed is Aces of the Pacific, and my life will be complete, for a while. anyways. :P
|
The best game I ever played.Snapped three joysticks in half , not frustration, just plain old hard flying, hard fighting at 100% difficulty level. It's a 5 all the way.
The VGA version is much more usable than the EGA version. :Titan: |
As I said I have Aces Over the Pacific if anyone's interested. I don't know how to upload games though.
|
Why's this in Compatibility?
EDIT: Nevermind, the forum moved while I wasn't looking  |
that would be great sheek, here's hoping someone will come along and help you get it uploaded. :D
|
Whats the best way to control the plane? With mouse the plane doesn't climb well, but with keyboard the plane doesn't roll well. Too bad there are no sensitivity settings. :(
|
this game is one of the classics. great game. flying maneuvers and dogfights are realistic only problem is graphics ofcourse, because it was suppose to run on slower pcs. one of the best in its time. i lost my original cd and im happy to download it on the net again. my original cd has also the addictive A10 tank killer. 'restart mission' option (of the downloadable version) i think is missing and the networking capabilities are gone.
|
I'm able to restard missions and I downloaded it. :) For 1990 I think the graphics are great, at least the graphics around the aero-dromes. Is there a map I can see while flying because I got no idea where I'm going. Also, when will they give me a new plane? I hate the Eindecker.
|
Hah, I remember I had this when I was a kid, and once I had to do a report on Billy Bishop. (really damn good pilot, and Canadian too) So when I was done I relieved my anger at having to do such a long report by blowing Bishop out of the sky in Red Baron.
LOL |
Brilliant! I think I got the hang of the game, however, ballon busting missions are the toughest because of flak. I hate flakkk!!!
Whenever I fly with aces in my squadron - they die!!! At the end of the war the only ace left was Luther von Richtofen because everyone else died while flying with me. |

Sierra made an updated redbaron in 98, red baron 3D. It's pretty fun...don't know if you can still get it though. It had muultiplayer. |
Howdy all,
I've read all that you've written in review of this game and I really want to download it and play it but I'm hopeless at this computer stuff. How do I download it? I know that it's basic stuff but I've never done it before. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to all. MAK |
Red Baron I (256 color Version) is a excellent World War One Dogfight Game! I always like to play it anytime! :D
I only know it can run on XP, but the sound is not good. It may be the sound card problem. So, I like to play it with speaker, and it only play with keyboard. Anyway, I still like it very much. LOL really low-end! :bleh: Trouble Star. |
best flight sim ever made
|
I see it's ESA-protected and that makes sense because it's published by Sierra...
but you can still download the VGA-version with the mission-editor at HOTU! What's the deal here? <meanwhile I'm downloading, because I never had that mission-editor...> |
B) :bye:
This is a very good game, even though the graphics are simple, it does amazing things you can change the point of view, you can record your flights, you can fly all over, exploring, you can experience changes in time of day, into night, really great game, you can learn all the different missions, do a campaign, attach planes, zephlins, straff trains, do aerobatics, fight famous aces, even make yourself invulnerable so that you can learn the art of flying without getting shot down every time, it took a long time for me to learn all the tricks and skills, and i still love this game, it was released by Sierra for free some while ago. There is an updated 3D version which uses the same scenes, and basic graphics, but more 3D, And oh yes, I almost forgot you can change the color of your plane even! Fighitng the red baron is fun, he is really good. And you can choose to have weather, and clouds or not. The cities are in simple details, with only major monuments and buildings but you can fly over London, Paris, etc, and so forth. There is even a German Zeplin Base you can find if you are good, but the zephlins never really land at it, i tried waiting for them but they get close but never really land there. ah well, there is a lot of fun things you can do with this game and the historical progression of diffent types of planes that became available as World War I progressed are pretty well done. enjoy :bye: :bye: :bye: |
well ok for the fact i'm a newbie to abondonia forums and those things. so this leads me to the point of ESA, since i cant find sierra online inc on ESA members list i just wanted to know where to get a download mirror.... :help:
[i]if u dont have anything usefull to say, shut it :wall: |
Sierra was bought by Vivendi, and Vivendi is an ESA member.

I got hooked on this game and me and a friend spent literally hour after hour playing it whilst absolutely wrecked. If you're reading this Paul Mason I was damn lucky not to get kicked out of uni thanks to you and this game!
It's an absolutely fantastic game full of replay value and once you're flying you soon forget about the primitive graphics and virtually non-existant sound. Still fun to play and with better variety and a better campaign than most modern flight sims. It's a shame this version isn't up for grabs but as someone else pointed out the more modern version is available. I loved that the red baron occasionally challenges you to a duel, you don't have to take him up on the offer but those one on one battles to the death were absolutely fantastic and one of the most tense gaming experiences I've had. |
If I remember correctly, some pc game magazine had a small snippet on an updated version of this game. They tore all the textures down and rebuilt the graphics engine from the ground up. It was supposed to be a great fan remake. I might have to dig through my mags to find it.
The thing this game had that I find missing from all other flight sims recently released, was the dynamic campaign mode. Such a simply thing really, allowing you to gain rank, die, or get captured, losing out on a portion of the war. It was a simple mechanic all told, but it felt all the more compelling for it. I know I had to hard reset my computer a few times when the ground was hurtling toward the cockpit just so I could save my ace from certain destruction. :ok: |
Has anyone noticed that the "Review" link on the first post of this thread leads to the Faery Tale Adventure 2 review? I'd be hard-pressed to come up with a connection between those two titles!
|
i have all the red baron serie and it makes me crazy! even i like more the old red baron 16 colors than the newest 3d version... boys my record on the 16color is 317kills with 18'646 points, anyone can beat it!?!
fugazi FFC PS: a couple of tricks: to avoid enemy fire, just dive your plane. when your sight is just under the horizon, enemy bullets will not hit you. disengage at the lowest alt and fight. to restart a mission (on the older version) just press ctrl alt canc as the very moment your plane crashes, you won't loose the game. have fun pilots! |
I like RB1 (256 color) version more than the newest RB3D verion too.
RB1 (16 color) verion is very hard to dogfight. 317 kills!!! You are the Great! :ok: Salute! <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Guest @ Aug 9 2006, 07:29 PM) </div> Quote:

Thanx!
RB saga is very engaging; I remember with pleasure my 15 month's career on WON, the server that allowed to play RB2 in multyplayer. I met a lot of smart persons and damn good pilots, who often kicked my a$$... but I did it so, sometimes ;) returning to RB 1990, definitely a great GREAT choiche! Fugazi FFC |
Agree! Agree! Agree! Hope RB 1990 can fly forever! Salute!!! :ok:

Uninstall Vista, get back to XP. :P

I already have Red Baron, but you would think after 18 years Dynamix would release it to the public. :notrust: It's a real classic, but I imagine the good will that they could create by giving it out would be higher than any profits they could possibly still be making with Red Baron.
|
Anyone else having problems running a USB joystick with Dosbox on this game? I can run with this joystick fine in Aces over Europe, but this one just gives me an error tone when I try to enable the joystick.
|
Salute!
I remember this game. I was flying a lot with this game, and I still remember that this game led me to the world of Red Baron 3D Multiplayer. I would say that both of these games are good, none is better than the other one. However, there is an expansion of this 256-coloured Red Baron game, which had more crafts (If I remember well, the Nieuport 11, Halberstadt D.II, Fokker D.VIII and the others), and had a mission builder, that's why it was called Red Baron Mission Builder Expansion. Someone wrote: "I remember a Red Baron which was capable to a multiplayer game where fifty planes flew simultaneously." - That is the Red Baron 3D, and if there's an event like War Forces or Red Baron World League, there are as many planes fighting, even today. Unfortunately, there are not too much people on the servers today. However, I must say that this game is one of the best DOS flight sims. There are others that I like, for example the F-29 Retaliator (which I like to upload), but this is my personal favourite. So I don't have to tell people that I rate this: five. |

You are like a 'King of Flight Sims'. I am just about ready to play and will comment on it later. Admittedly, I'm terrible at these kinds of games and I'd like to play something fun and simple, so I'll start here. ._.; |
Simply the best flight sim ever!! :)

From now on sold on gog.com
For those who have doubts on the freeware status here's an excerpt from the readme of the copy which was distributed for free in the past: Quote:

Can please somebody be so nice and even add the Somme Front map? It is not included in the zip file. This would be so great because when you start playing a campaign as an allied pilot you ALWAYS start in the Somme region. :smile2: Its a little stupid don't know where to fly to and where is your aerodrome. :hihihi:
|
Hi guys...is there a download button for dos version that im not seeing? only the maps and manual have download buttons...
|
It's marked "Sold" that means "You can buy it - so do it from copyright holder".
