I think this game was more deserving of a 5 than Merchant Prince.

Sure, you may not be able to continue once you die, but that was intentional because it makes the game that much more challenging. If you lose or die in many games, it's no big deal because you could just load the game again and try again from where you left off.

Also, the game is much more linear than the review made it seem. You have 90 days to complete the main game before your character starts becoming corrupted, at which the rate of corruption happens much more quickly. You don't have to finish the game in 90 days, but the game becomes much more difficult the longer you take.

If anyone needs help playing this game, there is a living and breathing ADOM community at adom.brinkster.net, and you can find the complete ADOM guidebook at www.andywlms.com/adom.

The rating of a game is decided by the reviewer himself, based on his knowledge and experience with the game. I decided to give it 3 because of the steep learning curve, which mean that I originally intended to rate it to 4. 5 on 5 is really for incredible classics (even tough a lot of games lately been added with a rating of 5 and did not deserve it) and I would not give ADOM a 5 on 5 even tough I like it very much. Nothing stop you from voting on the user rating tough, but right now out of 9 votes it's still a rating of 3.

Yes, there is a story in ADOM and you can't roam the realm forever... But I left those details purposely hidden in my review. First reason was that, if you do manage to live for that long when you begin the game, the reason why you need to get involved in the quest will become quite obvious as you complete the first minor quests and you learn about the story of ADOM. The second is that I wanted to write a review which would get the reader to want to try the game even tough it was only text based, which a lot of people would frown upon at first glance.

For the links, I am sorry to see that they are not up on the download page. Thanks for posting those here. I originaly uploaded a .txt named "related links" along with the game and there was two interesting links inside, perhaps Kosta could dig it and put them there. :ok:

www.andywlms.com/adom was one of those two and I recommend it very much.

So folks how about my first review ever? :D

I'm glad you asked the question, Eagle of Fire, because it gives me an easy lead-in to something I was just about to say. Your review was so informative and interesting that it's fired me up to play a game I normally wouldn't. Will give some thoughts on the game after I've had a chance to experience it. :ok:

Eagle of Fire 26-11-2004 08:19 AM

That's the spirit. :ok:

What's great in this game is that it get better and better with time which really differ from about all the other games out there.

Blind Ryan 26-11-2004 10:43 AM

I've been playing ADOM since 0.9.9 gamma 15. STILL haven't beaten this bastard. AWESOME game!

What I meant was if between Merchant Prince and ADOM, one was to get a three and the other a five, then ADOM should have got the five. I gave ADOM a four.

I thought of something last night. I hope the mini-FAQ in the game was read before making ADOM available on abandonia.com. ADOM is postcardware, and there is a section on the ADOM terms of use...

DON'T FORGET TO EDIT THE .CFG FILE IN THE ADOM_DAT FOLDER!!!

I know thomas (haven't contacted him in awhile)

He was too busy to continue producing the game at the time. It's freeware. He just likes postcards.

Post your best score. Lemme get mine from awhile ago.

This game is unfair

I was donig really well (lvl 6!) and I had killed the carpenter, I picked up the manual he dropped and tried to read it when I died for seemingly no reason! It was something about being engulfed in fire, anyway, that pissed me off! I try it again and I won't read things until I'm back in the village next time.

Blind Ryan 26-11-2004 11:17 PM

Don't read it. Building a bridge is overrated. Just freeze your way across or get water breathing paraphenalia.

I've been a member of the adom forums on brinkster for a good couple of years and I posted the site and plugged it.

Keep the characters coming. Dump those characters and then copy and paste with a text editor. They're a flc or flg file bearing your character's name. I'll post my newest one later (I suck now :) )

einherjar 27-11-2004 02:08 AM

I just lost a 12 Female Grey Elven Wizard in level 7 of the Druid Dungeon. I had two wands of death ray the entire time, and I didn't even know it. Needless to say, teleport control comes in really handy when casting Teleportation to try and escape.

Blind Ryan 27-11-2004 10:39 AM

eat a blink dog corpse.

Havell 27-11-2004 03:07 PM

I still maintain that this game is unfair, but for a different reason this time, BLINK DOGS! Where are they all coming from? I just got swamped last time by about 20!

Blind Ryan 27-11-2004 03:11 PM

I hate that but it's cool if you're skilled and they aren't.

Blinky's can summon more of em. Don't toy with them. Either run or kill them quickly.

The only real downside of this game would be for newcomers starting their first few characters. Dying in the game is extremely easy if you are not carefull enough, and a lot of early learning and discoveries are made through a character's death... which are all final.

Quote:

Because of this and the fact that the game can become a frustrating experience over time for inexperimented players I am giving this game a rating of 3. However, do not let the rating fool you. This game is like some old vine; it gets better with time.

BTW Havell; killing the Carpenter is the easy way to finish the quest. There is a better way but I'm not going to tell you how to do that. You will have to find it yourself. :sneaky:

Havell 27-11-2004 03:40 PM

I already figured it out, it's the one which reduces the shop prices if you do it right? (see how I didn't spoil it then?)

Mal 27-11-2004 04:02 PM

I love this game. But it's impossible to beat without scumming (backup copy your save files) Even with the occasional scumming it's really, really tough. Looking forward to plat Jade soon.

Eagle of Fire 27-11-2004 04:05 PM

What is plat jade? If it's another game I could give it a go. Have a link?

Of course. However, Blink Dog corpses are hard to come by when you don't have the Food Preservation skill. Grey Elven Wizards don't start with it, and mine couldn't scum for Rings of Djinni Summoning in the Infinite Dungeon past the third floor. Besides, if I got one, I would have wished for Bracers of War or Seven League Boots.

wendymaree 28-11-2004 03:02 AM

Holy Attack Energy, Batman, this game is more complicated than Dos. The manual alone is a small novel. I'm use to point and click interfaces and actions. heh But I've only begun to fight. Oh hang on. Today when I click on the exe file i'm getting the message: ADOM session is aborted because of an external problem.

Eagle of Fire 28-11-2004 03:16 AM

Yeah, if you stopped playing without using the quit key they game won't restart because there is a file which not been deleted. ADOM use that file mainly to prevent cheating, so you must delete that file before restarting play again.

Look at the error it should say which file.

wendymaree 28-11-2004 03:25 AM

Thanks, Eagle of Fire. I spotted it a moment after I posted the message. Once the prc file is removed it works fine. :ok: Wellll, here goes.... :Titan:

wendymaree 28-11-2004 03:41 AM

This is the character the game randomly generated for me. Coincidently I can relate to most of this.

---------------------------- BACKGROUND INFORMATION ---------------------------
YOUR HISTORY:

Your mother is a mighty enchantress. She is unmarried. Your father is
living in the vicinity of your mother's tower. He is a humble shepherd.
As a child you lived through happy days. Your parents tried to ease
your life as much as possible and gave you a lot of comfort.
In your youth you became seriously ill and suffered for many years.
When your disease finally was cured you were left weakened, both physically and
spiritually, and bereft of the joys of youth.
As a young adult you spent a lot of time searching for a deeper meaning
and purpose in your life. You pondered and pondered but nothing truly sparked
your interest. Finally, after many many hours, you made a decision.
You decided to become a Healer.

Air Elementals, Swamp Hydrae, and Black Dragons aren't hard to avoid in most situations. If you aren't ambushed, you can usually get away if you make a bee-line for the edge of the wilderness tile. If the Black Dragon or Air Elemental gets within bolt range, just stay out of their line of fire.

Blind Ryan 30-11-2004 01:47 PM

Indeed but by the time I get to them, I feel like I could easily take em and I die :)

Cmon, show us your scores and stuff.

Eagle of Fire 30-11-2004 08:22 PM

Sorry, but I think showing you a dump file like you did on the first page completely pointless.

genkai 01-12-2004 08:59 AM

do guys know about Nethack? its a game similar to ADOM and it is also being updated. ive heard its been around for about 20yrs. its a great game. check it out at www.nethack.org and see what you think. :D

Blind Ryan 01-12-2004 01:16 PM

Nethack is great too. I prefer adom cause it has more grounding to it.

Score files are fun to read when they have a been a good way (That goddamn jackel after killing 500 of em)

einherjar 02-12-2004 01:51 AM

When someone posts a character's final information, they usually remove the irrelevant information. No one cares that your PC killed 10,000 orcs and 35,000 rats. Big game (ie titans, greater molochs, etc), on the other hand...

EDIT: FYI, my current character is a level 17 Female Grey Elven Wizard. She is searching for a means with which to save a certain person from certain death. And for a physically frail yet powerful magical character, she is far better in melee combat than my first most successful character, a level 26 Male Human Fighter when he was at that level.

Blind Ryan 02-12-2004 03:04 PM

Saving people eh? Well, you could always wish upon a star :)

einherjar 02-12-2004 04:16 PM

Or a ring, wand, or pool.

Blind Ryan 02-12-2004 07:21 PM

Nah, Stars are more traditional :) Did you manage to save him?

einherjar 03-12-2004 12:47 AM

Not yet. She's made her third trip to ID:20 today. I did manage to find some good spellbooks though, namely Acid Ball and Strength of Atlas.

Eagle of Fire 03-12-2004 01:11 AM

If you want a tip, you can save him but he has to die either way.

einherjar 03-12-2004 01:14 AM

Not true. I've done it before.

Blind_Ryan 05-12-2004 04:51 AM

I've saved him once. It was luck that finally had it and I died afterwards :)

genkai 13-12-2004 04:33 AM

guys i've got a question.. is age in ADOM significant? i mean what happens when your character gets too old?

Eagle of Fire 13-12-2004 05:00 AM

If your character get "too" old he dies.

You can prevent that by finding and drinking potions of youth.

Obviously, you can't really die from age with a high longevity race such an elf, who can live several hundred years. Unless you really get hit by undeads often in your journey.

The race in danger of dying early from aging is the Trolls who don't live very long.

I beleive you also start to lose stats such as Endurance and Agility when you get close to your age death.

It is all written in the online manuals of ADOM too. Just type '?' while in the game and you'll get some good written manuals to help you.

einherjar 13-12-2004 10:22 PM

Most greater undead monsters (capital G) have attacks that cause your character to age considerably. Trolls, Orcs, and Humans should be careful around them (as they live less than 100 years), and should carry potions of youth or have them made available on-demand. The Alchemy skill allows you to make potions of youth, if you have the ingredients.

The other end of the age spectrum is life expectancy. Eating quickling king/queen/lord corpses is one way to shorten your character's life expectancy, although the speed increase makes eating them worthwhile in most cases. Your character isn't aged; he or she just won't live as long.

I suggest you consult the ADoM guidebook, which is found at www.andywlms.com/adom/adomgb-toc.html

Arrrgh... Just lost a nice char here... Got killed by a stupid Vortex, and it just had to bring me directly to 0 hp! Not 1 or -10, 0.

I felt like this char has a very good potential to get far. I had a lot of nice spells too, including teleportation and the ability to control teleportation...

One artifact? You should have got her precrowned. If you found a reliable source of herbs in the UD with an altar, you could have quickly got her precrowned at least twice.

This version of ADoM is going to be obsolete pretty soon...

This is the lastest version, although the offical web site says he's back to working on it again. ( Spliting his time between JADE, a java adom, and the Original).

Offical web site ADOM Central - the offical Ancient Domain Of Mystery website

There is also a news group for this great game.

Hope this is useful to someone

Eagle of Fire 05-01-2005 02:08 PM

Sorry, but I have no idea what precrowned is. I thought it was really further in the game, and I never got really further than past 3-4 levels under Dwarftown... I always get killed there by a way or another...

einherjar 05-01-2005 02:31 PM

Precrowning gives you a random non-guaranteed artifact. There are three requirements for precrowning:

1. Must be at L, C, or N-/N+.
2. Sacrifice until you get the message "[Deity] feels extremely close to you."
3. L>=8+(3*A) where L=character's level and A=artifacts generated.

Once you get the "extremely close message," Pray to your god.

Until you get precrowned, do not enter the gremlin cave, CoC level 8, Darkforge level 2, or the bottom floor of the RotHK dungeon. Entering these locations generates a guaranteed artifact and forces you to wait longer to be precrowned.

Anyone tried eating the corpse of a karmic dragon? ;)
It rocks

I don't really know what you wanted to point out here, but as far as I am concerned eating a karmic being is not something advisable to do...

Guest 26-01-2005 05:42 PM

<sigh>

Eating a karmic corpse gives you luck and fate smiles, and removes cursing and dooming. Attacking a karmic being curses and then dooms you. Wearing a ring of Karmic Resistance prevents this from happening when attacking with melee, although the B/U/C status changes, and the ring will eventually break.

Read the guidebook. www.andywlms.com/adom. There is a section on karmic beings.

Eating the corpse of a karmic being will, in order, remove the doomed intrinsic if present, remove the cursed intrinsic if present, grant the Lucky intrinsic if not present and grant the Fate Smiles intrinsic if not present. Remember all or any of these intrinsics can be present simultaneously. Thus a PC that is doomed and Lucky would lose the doomed intrinsic and retain the Lucky intrinsic after eating a karmic corpse. The same is true for a PC that has the cursed and doomed intrinsics - the PC would lose the doomed intrinsic but not the cursed intrinsic and would not gain either the Lucky or Fate Smiles intrinsics.
Seems you are right... I consult this guide everytime I play ADOM, I feel stupid to have overlooked this before... Perhaps it been added and I missed it..?

I hope you like my best character (I think I might be the best one ever made :D). It took me more than a year of 4 hour-minimal play per day to achieve this. I have another Lvl 50 PC, but it's not as good as this one.
If you want help with the game, write to stratoeh@hotmail.com , I will help you when possible :D.

Thanks,
Blood

PD: All that equipment that I have on this character (in the bag), is a 1/4 of the total :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

A. J. Raffles 17-04-2005 09:11 AM

Nice character, Blood, but why did you quit? Your score would have been much higher if you had just gone on to close the gate. And how on earth did you manage to get him to grand mastery in two melee weapon classes and to mastery in a third in just 65 days? And an archer too...

Endop 17-04-2005 12:44 PM

I don't know what, exactly, happened, but I quess Blood either wanted that info file and didn't know about []() commands (short/long info files are created from some of those, check ?-keybindings in-game) or finished the game, closed the gate and didn't know he could actually finish the game. After one closes the gate, he can walk around the Drakalor Chain, talk with people etc., and the game doesn't "end" before you walk nort-east of Terinyo and leave the same way you came.

Well done, anyway! I have also played ADOM for 4-ish years, and have finished it only once. I had one other character get to level 50, and one character that would probably have completed the game if Bugs' little buggers hadn't got strong enough to kill him in just one round. I was trying to finish them again and for all, had gotten the last few stuck to a corner and decided to finish them off with my Emerald Dagger instead of Acid Ball, the way that had killed off over 1000 of them.

Janne Joensuu,
Endoperez

A. J. Raffles 17-04-2005 03:06 PM

No, I don't think he can have successfully closed the gate, otherwise the file would read "he quit prematurely (after winning)". On the other hand, Fistanarius is on his kill list, so perhaps he just handled the levers without using a wand of destruction and one of the balors opened the gate again (there are no balors on the kill list). Still, it's a bit odd. Coming so close to winning the game and then not doing it. He could even have tried for an ultra ending... Well, anyway, it certainly looks like a nice character. Good job, Blood.

Blood 18-04-2005 01:41 AM

About the closing of the Chaos Gate, I did close it (I wouldn't be so stupid to kill Fistanarius and not do that) but i don't know why it doesn't shows it. Maybe you should read again, because I killed 13 balors (and once I spent a wish on summonig greater molochs for exp :D, from LVL 29 to 50 in 5 minutes :D :D).Also I can tell I closed the gate because it's been a while (after defeating Fistanarius) that I haven't got any corruption. But I will check anyway.

I made a back up copy before quiting, just to post here and continue my training.

The mastery isn't so hard to achieve (even easier after having completed the game before and knowing how to do it fast :D). Let's just say that vaults can help you do this.

Also, you can test the cincilating cave to get items, artifacts and masteries. And exp if you are not 50 yet (wich is quite hard).

As I said in the other post, email me if you have any question.

PD: I will post again showing the final score soon.

Thanks, Blood

A. J. Raffles 18-04-2005 06:26 AM

Oops, you're right. I missed that. I also thought it was an archer for some reason, but now I see it's a ranger (which would explain the comparative lack in missile weapon marks). My apologies. :kosta:
But I'm still amazed at how you managed to finish the game so quickly. I've had several winners, but it always took me bloody ages to finish. Probably because I like wilderness encounters so much. :D I've never managed an ultra ending yet, though.

Blood 18-04-2005 05:12 PM

Despite of how powerful this caracter is, I crowned it at lvl 9, so I couldn?t have finished an ultra ending XD.

You can see I am weilding the TotRR, imagine the speed x Neddle+Sting x Ranger Class x 100 Two weapon Combat + Strengh + Dexterity = Killed Emperor moloch with 5 strikes (remember without armor piercing) O.o.

I spent lots of time in this caracter and I am fond of it. So I wanted it to achieve 99 at all stats!! That is what I am working on now.

Ah, another tip. There was only one time when I was in the wilderness without Blessed Seven League Boots, that was before entering the puppy cave. Remeber that the SLB reduce wilderness traveling time VERY MUCH. Plus I only surfaced from the Chaos Cave for the ToEF and afterwards to complete some missions. So I spent very little time in the wilderness. At first it may seem that you LVL up faster in the wilderness, but if you consider game time, that is very false. So try to find a cavernous lvl to train (for example, one of the lvls of the puppy cave is cavernous, thus provides great early training). I surfaced from that cave in lvl 16 and spent 2 1/2 game days doing this. Try it.

Also, cavernous lvls are useful to train masteries.

Ah! For all those out there, I am from Argentina.

If you have anything to ask, email me to stratoeh@hotmail.com

Thanks, Blood

It really depends on what sort of character you like to play, but generally, I'd suggest that you use missile weapons a lot. Use the tactics settings. And if you're playing a magic user, don't forget to train you melee weapon skills. They'll come in handy at some point.
And of course the ultimate rule of ADOM: if you feel you're becoming over-confident, call it a day and stop playing, or your character will be dead very soon. :D

Blood 20-04-2005 05:05 PM

There are many secrets....but those you have to discover by youself...
There are a few "tricks" I posted, you should read my other posts.
That one about confidence is very true. Call it a day I do something else.

About classes and races, I consider a melee fighter to be the best option in any case (the only thing I haven't achieved with a melee is an undead great vault, that can be easily done by a wizard or like) for beginners (don't mean to offend). I achiveved lvl 46 with an human wizard, but I was aged to death by a ghost king (don't ask how that happened).
That thing about missiles...how the hell did you beat the ToEF??? With magic? Because I doubt you found a large quantity of adamantium/ethernium arrows/quarrels...
Anyhow, you should take the other advise: TRAIN MELEE MASTERIES!!! They are very important!!!

If you have any question, email me to stratoeh@hotmail.com

Thanks, Blood

PD: Also, avoid starvation!

No, but a couple of poisoned arrows or quarrels of dragon slaying always work fine for me. Wands of poison are even better, but unfortunately they're pretty rare. Like most monsters in the game, the wyrm is very vulnerable to poison attacks.

Guest_Blood 21-04-2005 11:04 PM

Mmmm....I never noticed that about the poison...
I've used the Serpent Sting many times...but I thought the efect was just not strong enough.
See? This demostrates I have a long way to go...
All mi characters (Mage or not) beat the Wyrm with ice magic. No exceptions. But the next time I'll try that instead and see how it results!

Thanks, Blood

PD: I will post the final score soon, I am training now :Titan: (It's hard to beleive that after kiling 250~ blue dragons, they have become so strong that they can kill me! )

A. J. Raffles 22-04-2005 06:40 AM

Poisoning also adds up, so if you manage to poison the wyrm multiple times, it'll go down easier.

Hey, a little hint...
If you wanna have perfect character, download ADOM v. 0.9.9g and a program named WADOMF.

Oh, but perfect characters are soooo boring.

Lord_Scather 10-05-2005 01:26 PM

ADOM is one of the games i really enjoy, and it IS hard, but after dying several times (about two 200-250 times :wall: ) I got the hang and....

I will post some of my Chars in time (have none at the terminal I'm using and just signed up here) but to join in this thread, here's a bit for now:

Right now I have two Characters running, and they are:

a level 13 Troll beastfighter (!) with the Si, literacy skill (again, !) and much more potential. He's on the way back from the living trees quest (no spoiler intended  ) and did several of the sub-quests (arena, the Druid...)

a level 11 Dwarf merchant with LOTS of stuff (nearly all useful...damn greedy merchants LOL), and he's ON his way to the living tree quest..

Of course, i made a backup of the chars several times, lamer that I am, but until now just about five each...mainly because I'm mortally afraid of system crashs
(really, I didn't just copy them, I burn them to a RW before+after playing, no joke)

All in all one of the very best Rouge-likes around. Thumbs up! :ok:

Benedictus 12-05-2005 10:20 PM

This game is one of the most entertaining I have played! I know, it takes a while to get used to the graphics, or lack thereof, but if I had a dollar for each hour I have wasted on this game....
Cheers to Abandonia crew for the download and Cheers to Thomas for making this gem!

AlexXx 15-05-2005 11:20 AM

I had a great Fighter Human, but he got corrupted and started to turn into a monkey, literally.
then it's learning score started to go down and i cba anymore. is there anyway to get rid of the corruption thingy ? :help:

A. J. Raffles 15-05-2005 11:50 AM

Several, in fact. You can remove corruption through reading scrolls of chaos resistance (only if your character is literate, obviously), drinking potions of cure corruption or drinking from pools (this is a bit risky, though, since pool drinking can have several rather unpleasant effects as well). And if you do a certain quest, you can have all of your corruptions removed, but only once.

AlexXx 17-05-2005 04:35 AM

Ah, i see, thanks for your help. :)

Guest 22-06-2005 10:59 PM

:help: I am getting soooo frustrated with this game. I can't seem to get my character to get over the lvl7 hump. As soon as I reach that lvl I am killed by some higher lvl monster. Even when I run away they follow me to the stairs and I can't get up/down to escape. How long should I stay in the dungeon to find the Mad Carpenter. If I go in at low lvl I reach 6 or 7 b4 I find him and when I get that far up in lvls I get smoked by stronger monsters. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

I've been using the site below to help me out. Some of the info is useful but other things I haven't reached so I don't even know if I "can" figure them out yet.

http://www.andywlms.com/adom/adomgb-toc.html

Eagle of Fire 23-06-2005 12:17 AM

This is part of what makes the steep learning curve of this game.

I personally rescue the Mad Carpenter by much lower level than level 7 and still manage fine. The trick is to play a lot with your stance (defensive, wimpy, agressive etc) depending of the type of monster which is in front of your and the type of char you are playing.

"Good" offensive players like fighters or the like don't need to change from the normal mode too often and still manage fine. However, if you want to go melee with a mage or something weaker than a normal fighter you'll want to switch to a more agressive stance once in a while or you may end up not being able to get a mark whatever you do.

Don't forget to watch your HP tough. When you get low enough and you set yourself on wimpy you get free extra movement to flee away. :)

Aramil1120 23-06-2005 12:37 AM

:kosta: Thanks for the fast reply. Yeh, I was attacking everything that came across my path. I forgot all about the different modes you could put yourself in ie. wimpy/aggressive. Also I read on other ADOM sites that "ranged" fighters
(archers/spellcasters) have a better chance of survival as you get higher in lvls and go deeper into the game. I didn't know about the extra moves you get on wimpy, thanks. ALso I'm playing adom_winbeta4. Are you familiar with this version? I usually play either a troll/healer or an elven spellcaster. :kosta:

A. J. Raffles 23-06-2005 06:07 AM

I usually play the winbeta 4 version, because I think the "graphics" look better than they do in the DOS version.:D
Spellcasters are quite good, but don't forget to train them in melee weapons and missiles as well, or you're going to regret it later on (like in the mana temple). Elven archer is a truly amazing combination; all you need to do is make sure you train melee weapons as well (and preferably also learn a spell or two), otherwise you'll get into severe problems when facing doppelganger kings.
Trollish healers take a while to get going (partly because the need so much experience), but it's worth it in the end. Make sure you use missile weapons as well, though; it makes the game much easier.

Aramil1120 23-06-2005 11:52 PM

Thanks. Just finished dying again for the 4th time tonight. I made it to the mad carpenter, but was stunned by something( can he stun?) and he pummeled me while I just stood there.

A. J. Raffles 24-06-2005 06:08 AM

You probably need to have something to get your PV up a bit. Wielding two shields and going on coward might help. You just need to remember to unequip the shields afterwards.

Eagle of Fire 24-06-2005 07:22 AM

You don't need to complete the carpenter quest anyways. If you find it too difficult then go elsewhere and explore until you get some equipment you feel confident with.

Southeast of the map, directly south of where you begin your journey, lie the infinite dungeon. Packing up on supplies and venturing forth in that dungeon may be a nice alternative at the beginning of the game.

TheChosen 24-06-2005 03:21 PM

You know you've been playing too much ADOM when....

The carpenter quest is only good for the healing skill. There's no point in taking the quest if you already have healing; the Keethrax quest should be completed later in the game, but you can descend to level 6 with no problem if you have keys or unlock doors (the village and Druid dungeons have more locked and trapped doors than dungeons usually have).

The best plan of action is going straight for the Infinite Dungeon to gain 10 levels. Once you save 3500 and have pickpocketed 27 or more humanoid monsters, you should get detect traps. If you are not a spellcaster, you should find a missile weapon and some missiles and train your ranged weapon skills (preferably in one weapon) to at least level 5 before going to the CoC. The Puppy Cave is a bad idea unless your character is really buff. Ogre Magi can be generated at or below PC: 4, and Doppleganger Lords have been found on the bottom floor. The lesser vault that is usually generated on the bottom floor usually contains large gnolls/hyenas, lesser undead, or orcs.

One of the best sources of information and advice for ADOM is the forum at adom.brinkster.net/forum, which also hosts the ADOM Hall of Fame. They really go in-depth with advice and research, and have created many sound strategies for playing ADOM.

Deapool 03-02-2006 08:35 PM

i have play ADOM since gamma 9
its the best pc game i've ever play
0 graphics but 10 in any other rating
i have finished the game in the 'easy' mode, just close the gate and go back home
and im trying finishing the game as a champion of LAW,battling the ChaoS goD hand to hand in his own terrain

the options are endless,my favorite task is training my beloved giant dragon turtle 'demon eather' and my giant boar 'dragonslayer'
in game terms a sword wielded by a str 0 character deals 1d8 damage
my giant boar in level 120 made 12 attacks of aprox 15-120 damage, and his speed is about 200,so dragonslayer could attack u 24 times before u can view it,of course....one time i threw a fireball and hit my companion.....which killed me
other is playing a merchant gnome ,so i guaranted the heir item(a blessed leather armor of carrying) which let me carry about 300.000 stones without getting burdened when i cast strenght of atlas and drnk few potions of boost strenght(i really could carry the whole dragon's lair)

of course i would like to try the game, without cheating(no saving games),but its freaky dificult

Eagle of Fire 03-02-2006 10:00 PM

For all those who like ADOM and who would like to talk about it, I would suggest that you get to this sister thread instead. While this thread is 6 pages long, the sister thread is 77 (!) page long. :ok:

Herold 18-05-2006 01:54 PM

One of the best games EVER. Graphic is very specific - it's an ASCII-art. It would be misunderstanding to compare this graphic with another games. It's not iconic but symbolic instead. And the difficulty? Yes, it's for true players only. But with knowledge of ADOM I now have it's not SO HARD.

It's a gem. :kosta:

JpegsOnly 02-06-2006 06:17 AM

I've got a level 50 male drakish monk named Brenton and he's currently trying to kill all the intelligent monsters on level 50 of the CoC. I want that Chaos Gate to STAY closed!

Nigga 09-07-2006 10:29 PM

No doubt, ADOM is a piece of real ART! Thus, I'd say even not a piece, but a mesterpiece. :kosta:
Thomas, my loud applause!!!
But hey, guys!
I have three questions which concern me a lot from the moment I've read all the six pages of this forum:

1. Is there at least ONE human who managed to complete ADOM without making ANY backup copies of his character AT ALL??? Especially that "modern" guy who called himself Blood and posted that mega-cool char! :sneaky:
2. Can I have at least a liiiiitlle hint how to complete that carpenter quest without killing him? :whistling: Of course, it's not necessary to complete it, and it's even better to take that Keethrax quest instead, but those replies of Eagle of Fire and Havell at the top of the second page made me really curious!!! :max:
3. Is there anybody still reading this forum??? Abandonia Reloaded already has 108 forum pages of ADOM discussion and it seems that everybody ran away there :(
BTW: Can I somehow download all the forum pages of Abandonia Reloaded, because reading all those pages online is quite EXPENSIVE here if you know what I mean :wallbash:

When you climb a stairway up or down, the monsters next of you will follow you to the next level. This is because you can't just run away from "trouble" if you get overwhelmed...

Yeah, I've already tried it myself immediately after I've read your post. I noticed that monsters always follow you when they stand next to you and you climb the stairs in either direction when I played ADOM for one of my first times.
And once I even managed to take Tywat Pare the sheriff with me when I left Terinyo and he occasionally stood next to me. I brought him to the outlaw settlement and he slaughtered all those wandering bad guys there :D :D :D I like watched a Clint Eastwood western LOL
But that's another story, anyways...
So, I tried that thing, and managed to bring Yrrigs right to the first level, but when I attempted to climb out of the dungeon along with him standing next to me, I've got a message saying that I cannot leave the dungeon while envolved in a fight :(
So, can I get a little bigger piece of tip? :whistling:

Hello, I'm new to the discussion but I have a lot to say about ADOM

Currently I am playing a lvl 50 dwarf wizard who is striving for the ultimate Avatar of Order ending
I have everything completed in the CoC except the Orb Temple (of course) I just left the quickling tree (was only able to get my intrinsic speed to 181)

Having faced ANdoR before and promptly having my behind handed to me, I know that this character is no match for the ChAoS god. My buddy thinks I should try and push my strength up to over 50 and try for polearm grand mastery before going to the ChAOs plane. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

The only thing I can say about ADOM is that it is good to be smart but it is better to be lucky(and I'm not talking about the luck given to you by rings and ankhs) You just have to get lucky man...it is neccesary to know all of the tricks and secrets but knowing all that stuff does not mean anything if a rock crushes you in the puppy cave

For instance, the character that I am playing had enough talents to be a treasure hunter and brother came home on birthday. I found a Lawful altar and Broadsword of Mayhem in the Small Cave and from that point on it was happy times and rock and roll. There is always that burgeoning optimism of every game that says, "This character could go all the way." The moment of destiny for my character was when my level 24 wizard stumbled into a nest of Ancient Red Dragons with several Ancient Great Named Wyrms also present in the proxmity of an elemental temple (no teleportation) So I just started casting Frost Bolt like a madman, dragons clawing at me, breathing fire, and casting spells (Ring of Clear Mind and Ring of Elemental Mastery saved me from serious damage from their ranged attacks) by the time I stumbled back out I was level 50 and the Crowned Champion of Morodwyn. That is basically how it all went down.

For those of you who feel that the game is unfair...just wait until you fight the freakin' boss man. One dude I had was packin mad toughness (65) and HP was 969, 98 DV/ 77PV-->aNdOR anilhilated him...this wizard I'm playing now has less than 600 hp and defense and protection values are not even close.

Raffles 15-07-2006 08:22 PM

Speed is probably going to benefit you more than strength, so I'd suggest scumming for potions of boost speed and/or wishes, so you can wish for speed once you're there. Boost your speed as far as possible, and if you can, kill him with missiles (only if your skill level is high enough, obviously).

You already have 75% of the answer, giving any more tip would be giving out the answer altogether. ;)

BTW, please, explain me what effects does that stuff have???
For several times, I've had that stuff saying either "brother came home on your birthday" or "on your birthday the undeads near your village went away" (or something like that).

Of course, I can guess what effects has "undeads went away".
But what about "brother came home"???

It means there's a greater chance of beehives, anthills pools and shops being generated randomly.
You can find explanations of the other messages in section 0.12.6 of the ADOM Guidebook.
Be warned, though, that site is extremely spoily - not that it would actually help you to win, but if you want to figure out everything for yourself, you'd better not go there.;)
Generally speaking, special birth messages are nice, but they don't make enough of a difference to make scumming for them worthwhile. They're more of a flavouring element, really.

How to wish upon a star???

Hmm, come again?
If your question is about how to get wishes, there's basically five ways of getting wishes:
  • by drinking from a pool: stand on the pool and press Shift + d (but keep in mind that a wish is only one of many effects pooldrinking can have and that not all of them are positive)
  • by zapping a wand of wonder: press z and select the appropriate wand (I've never had this happen myself, but it's rumoured to be possible)
  • by casting the Wish spell if you've got it: press Shift + z and select the correct spell from the list (this comes at a very high cost, though, and if you're not careful you may well end up killing yourself).
  • by zapping a wand of wishing (those are extremely rare, though, so you need to be very lucky to find them. But if you do find one, it may have several charges. Always make sure it isn't cursed before you use it, or you won't get a wish every time. Also keep in mind that you can't recharge them, so when it's down to 0 charges you'd better keep zapping it until you wrench out the final charge that destroys the wand.)
  • by rubbing a *blessed* ring of djinni summoning: identify the ring's status and dip it in a potion of holy water if necessary. Then press Shift + u and select the ring from your pack.
If you want advice on what to wish for, that depends.

Nigga 07-08-2006 11:51 AM

Thanks, Raffles, but much of that is what I know already ( though still there were some helpful tips, thx ;) )
But I've decided to ask that question after I've read the following:

[/b]
I thought that there's some extraordinary way to get wishes when the sky is full of stars, or something like that...

And also I've got one more question if I may ^_^

Is there any way to resurrect that little girl's cute dog???
Or the only way is wishing for it???

Or maybe I can find an alive cute dog somewhere else?

A. J. Raffles 07-08-2006 12:33 PM

Ah, sorry, but I didn't realise you were referring to an old post. Anyway, there's no way to "wish upon a star" in ADOM, so whoever suggested that probably didn't mean it literally. The only ways of getting a wish are the ones I listed.

No, but if you manage to get to the bottom of the puppy cave quickly enough (i.e. within a couple of days), it will still be alive and follow you out of the dungeon and to Terinyo - unless it gets killed on the way up, which sadly happens far too often... You don't actually have to save it, though, and it can be quite dangerous to dive down the dungeon quickly with a low-level character, so for the time being, it'll probably be easier for you to skip that bit and try again when you know the game a bit better.

If you're brave, you can try skim-reading the discussion thread on AR for information on the puppy quest. There should be quite a lot of info on it. Be warned, though: that thread is LONG...

Nigga 07-08-2006 02:02 PM

Uhmm, that sounds quite difficult...

You're right, deeping down the puppy cave with a low-level char is extremely dangerous, plus even if I rescue the puppy, it'd be quite difficult to take it through that level 5 full of LOTS of monsters. But maybe I could try to do it with my wizard, who is quite good as for a newborn character ^_^

And now I realize why it is always dead - when I start the game, I always find and kill Kranach, then I complete that Keethrax quest, then I kill Hotzenplotz, and only THEN I go into the puppy cave... :wallbash:

That's my worst neagtive feature - although I know that ALL of those quests aren't necessary to complete, I just can't go on without completing 'em!!! :)

Thanks for the advice.

Nigga 30-08-2006 06:00 PM

Hello again ^_^

It's been a great weekend (though it's Wednesday now, I didn't have an opportunity to write this post sooner)!!!

After weeks of not playing ADoM, I finally managed to get some spare hours and guess what? I sacrificed them to the great God whose name should be pronounced with fear and respect, since it reads "Ancient Domains of Mystery"!!! :kosta:

I played the game all weekend long, and it's been a great pleasure.

First of all, I must say that rescuing that damn puppy isn't such a big deal as I thought when I was typing my previous post. The trick is just to get quite lucky so that on level 5 both stairways are situated quite close to each other.
Plus to that, that cute puppy must be lucky enough to be placed not far from the stairway or in a room without monsters, because since you descend to that level, the level begins to live, and the puppy can get killed if you don't manage to get to him quite fast! But that's not so hard, and it didn't take a long time for me to complete this quest.
Also, I think that druid suits this quest just perfectly (I don't say that others will fail, just that druid suits best). Take, for example, those giant ants on level 2 - if they are placed in such a way that they block the stairway to level 3, you often wouldn't stand a chance against them, cuz it's just the beginning and your char is quite low! And druid doesn't get attacked by those ants (as well as by other animals, insects, and other creatures of nature) ;) Though, once I managed to kill ALL the ants with a level 1 human wizard ( guess how!!! ^_^ )

Second, at last I managed to complete the carpenter quest in that another (more delicate) way "which reduces prices in the shop"!!! Damn, the trick is so simple, and I couldn't figure it out for a whole month :hysterical:
And the way I figured out that trick is just ridiculous :D

Yeah, but it will give you nothing. Of course, the quest will be completed, but you won't be the one who "brought back joy into the life of a tiny girl", and that is the goal, not just going to the bottom of the dungeon and back (you can use infinite dungeon for this purpose, for example)!!!

Actually, it does bring a lawfull alignment boost and may bring you one charisma point if you talk to the girl afterward and play with her a little while.

You get the boost when you give her the corpse, and the charisma point when you talk to her AFTER you give her the corpse.

Guess what - I've understood what did he mean, I just didn't figure out is he talking about giving away the corpse, or about successful completing the quest.

I mean, when I first read the post, for me it sounded like "the only thing this quest gives is just a boost and a charisma point, so it isn't necessary to complete it at all". That's why I asked.

Try it.

[/b]
Impossible, you had to get the ring of the high kings in the first place.

Guest_Pete_* 09-09-2007 04:40 PM

Unrelated but the Dwarf just asked me to kill a chaos eye. Any suggestions on where to find one?

chumloofah 12-09-2007 09:46 PM

Puppy cave isn't so bad.
Stick a melee on berserk or a wizzy on wuss and you're ok.
Keethrax, however, kicks the arse.
