OK. Here`s my contribution to the society:

I just learned this, and it works.

1.Type about:config into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
__________________________________________________ ______________
2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set network.http.pipelining to true

Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true

Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to a maximum value of "8". But DO NOT set a number larger than that.

It`s about this thing called "pipelining". A fellow over there explained the thing:

Quote:

Pipelining was possible in firefox since ages now, but somehow no one ever thought hat enabling it by default and puttin a value of 8 would help..
Btw, 30 is way too more and might break your connection to the website (weak packets dying) thus giving you slowdowns. Using 8 should be enough.

Btw, pipelining doesn't mean making more connections to a website, but mostly like cutting 1 connection in X parts.

I'll try to explain why 30 is a bit too much. This is explained in a childish way and doesn't exactly reflect reality:
Polobunny pipeling bedtime story for kids
First, firefox cuts the connection in 30, sending 30 scavenger bots retreive data.
Fact: Some scavenger bots are bigger, thus slower.
The smaller bots are returning fast to their base, while the bigger bots take more time.
Some scavenger bots can die of "horrible scavenger crash". The bot size has nothing to do with their crash, unless they are way too big (that almost never happens).
If too much big scavenger bots die (and all the bots returned) and the page isn't loaded completely, firefox will send 30 other bots. (doubling the process time)
Fact: When putting more bots they'll need to be faster or they'll die of being too old (again, this is a fictive representation)
Fact: A bot speeding at 100mph has more chance or crashing then a bot running at 50mph.
Scavenger bots all returned safely and has jillions of kids and lived happily.
End

So now that you understand pipelining, and if this firefox trick doesn't really help you, try to lower the pipelining.maxrequests number. If you rconnection is weak you'll get nothing if you put 30.
[/b]
A quote from polobunny - thanks dude.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you are using a broadband connection (whatever this means :) ) you would load pages MUCH faster.

Thanks to Kazauya and polobunny.

Tried that, never noticed any difference.

Maybe it`s because you have a fast connection. Mine is slow, and i felt the difference right away.

Did you try FasterFox?

Fasterfox - performance and network tweaks for Firefox.
  • Prefetch Links
Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with Fasterfox's unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing.
  • Tweak Network
Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.
  • Page Load Timer
A millisecond accurate page load timer tests the effectiveness of your settings.
  • Block Popups
A popup blocker for popups initiated by Flash plug-ins is also included.
  • Locales included for Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Frisian, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian.

I can give it a try.... I`ll check what kind of minimum system requirements has though...
Also I`m not sure if I want to stop the pop-ups, since some sites REQUIRE them - like yahoo games online, some download sites, etc.

EDIT: I`ll learn a bit more about it before installing it - right now my firefox is working great, and I usually spoil things when expeimenting with these sort of things. On the site it doesn`t say will it affect on the system memory firefox uses.

my firefox reboots computer and causes heavy errors :(. i think i will switch to firefox 1.something instead of this 2.0 thing.

i noticed explorer behaves normally...

Nick 05-06-2007 08:29 AM

To make Firefox work faster - use Opera. :)

I recently installed that browser and I think I'll be using it instead. It loads faster, works faster and even can mask as IE.

Japo 05-06-2007 09:27 AM

I've never switched to 2.0. I'm still using 1.5, as I heard 2.0 is way too buggy. Been a while since it got out tough...

Japo 05-06-2007 08:02 PM

Until now v2 must have been somewhat beta and that's why FF didn't updated itself from v1 to v2, even though many people updated manually, but it will happen in a matter of weeks I heard. Hopefully they will have sorted out the most pressing "issues" I've heard about concerning v2.

Eventually you'll need to update, at least once you hear v2 is bug-free enough, because as vulnerabilities are solved in v2, but not in v1 which will be discontinued, they will be published and so every hacker will learn about them.

Tulac 05-06-2007 08:55 PM

Still on 1.5 and there've been a couple of updates for this one too, I think it's 1.5.7, I won't mind the autupdating to v2.0 if all the plugins will work.

nace 05-06-2007 10:03 PM

I would mind, cause the minimum system req. FF2 wants is 128 Mb RAM, and thats all I have (for now).

Eagle of Fire 05-06-2007 11:06 PM

Why would someone even need a browser which take more memory than a normal process is way beyond me anyways... Why would you need 128 megs ram to run a notepad program?

Japo 06-06-2007 08:03 AM

If you're concerned about RAM you could change to Opera, you won't regret it. That was the reason I changed at the time with my old 64 MB machine, but now I find Opera way better in all aspects.

Tell me about it. I`ll give it a try with opera - I thought it was not free though - but I could be wrong...
It`s free right?

did this happened after you set the pipelining?

Japo 07-06-2007 07:54 AM

Yes Opera is completely free. Also it's never a bad idea to read the EULA if you want.

Danny252 07-06-2007 04:19 PM

I've been on FF2 for a long while, and it's not given me problems. About the only problem is Adobe Acrobat reader hogging up resources when opening a .pdf in the browser, and I know it's just as slow and hoggy in IE.

IE didn't even work for months after IE7 came out as an update, and windows, for some reason, claims there's an IE error when trying to "Restore Active Desktop" after a problem.

FF does just fine for me, feels nicer, and all my plugins from 1.5 work.

Yeah, Opera 9 is pretty good. :ok:

faeornran 09-06-2007 09:48 PM

Firefox has always worked the best and been the fastest for me. O_o

chainsoar 09-06-2007 10:05 PM

Opera = evil.

What are you talking about exactly? (mouse gestures)

Japo 10-06-2007 02:21 PM

What Chainsoar was talking about, it's an Opera feature, I was saying how to disable it since he doesn't like it, but others will like it.

Havell 10-06-2007 05:49 PM

You can get a very similar thing in Firefox:

http://perso.orange.fr/marc.boullet/...nsions-en.html
(second extension in the list)

Actually, I found that almost all of the gestures on that list did exactly the same in Firefox, and with this extension you can customises them and there's a huge amount of different functions you can choose to do with gestures (though I only use a handful).

It's one of those things that's become second nature to me, I find myself making gestures on other people computers and having to snap out of it when I find it doesn't work. Just one of those things that slightly improves your computing life, like tabbed browsing or a mouse wheel.

punch999 10-06-2007 08:43 PM

I actually use mozzila Seamonkey. It is much nicer to use for me because it is firefox with a built in IRC and a more simple look. I reccomend checking it out.
