:) Ahh yes, I remember this game. Back in the day it was the talk of the day. I have the cd and it got put on the back burner, being at that time there were other excellcent games.

Ugly Guest 22-06-2007 01:37 AM

Ah yes, I had an original copy of this a long time ago; an awesome game, and way ahead of its time, being a fighting/adventure game combo. The graphics were also impressive for the time.

HOWEVER.... it's short, and the ending is atrocious, an obivious lead-in to a sequel which, to add to the insult, was never made... So you don't even get to finish the story. Grrrrr.

RayCeeYa 22-06-2007 01:41 AM

I can't get it to run. I'm mounting the game directory as drive C and running bioforge.bat but it won't load the program. I keep getting an unable to detect CD-ROM or game CD error.

I had this same problem. I found the solution for me was to open the folder called X in this folder there is another folder called bio. In there I found an installer which I run. The installed copy works fine for me.

Hope this helps

Thank EA for that - they bought Origin and then their games went down like a brick. Ultima IX Ascension was a flop because EA had pushed it to be released too soon (while it was really a brilliant game without the bugs, I spent a week completing it a few months ago) and the only other game bearing the Origin name of worth was Ultima Online which was the last game before "Lord British" left.

Then EA gave Origin just the right to update and maintain Ultima Online or future Online games which kept getting canned. And 3 years ago, EA killed Origin for good. F**k EA to be honest - Origin made/published tons of good games before Electronic "the Borg" Arts took over:

Wing Commander series
Ultima series
Crusader series
Bioforge
Privateer series
Wings of Glory
System Shock
Strike Commander
Shadowcaster
Cybermage (underrated if you ask me)

I also get an error. he cannot find the emessage.txt
It is caused by a dl failure?
Because i tried this:

but the installation ends with an error
Something about an failure with Gsamples.flx

Should I try to dl it again, because the file is corrupt?
Or missed I a setting? Note: i want first to try it with Dosbox befor i use 98

faeornran 23-06-2007 04:24 AM

Geez, it took the game long enough to lose it's protection :P

Do you guys need an ISO for Bioforge?

Mr. K 23-06-2007 04:53 AM

Hey, how do I stand up in the beginning of the game while I'm lying on the bed?? I've tried just about all my keys but i can't figure it out. kthnxbai

please could help me? :sos:

BIOFAN 23-06-2007 11:37 PM

hi,

for all who have problems with this "release": here is my fix for DOSBOX user.
for pure DOS users it will work the same way IMO.

- unzip the BIOFORGE.ZIP in a "path your choice" (e.g. into D:\GAMES\DOSBOX\ for windows user).
- you will get a folder named BIOFORGE\
- rename this folder (e.g. BIOTEMP)
- start dosbox with "path your choice" as drive c: (e.g. D:\GAMES\DOSBOX\) and do this:
Code:

CD BIOTEMP\
SUBST S: X
S:
CD BIO
INSTALL.EXE

- now choose ENGLISH as only language (all other versions are ripped) or installation will fail
- change install type to LARGE
- now we have install path = "C:\BIOFORGE" and install type = "LARGE"
- "install bioforge" and choose your soundcard settings (e.g. SB16 220/7/1 for DOSBOX defaults)
- "save settings and exit"
- quit dosbox
- move the folder X\ from BIOTEMP\ to BIOFORGE\ and also BIOWARE.BAT
- delete BIOTEMP
- start dosbox again
- start bioforge with the copied batch file:
Code:

CD BIOFORGE
BIOFORGE.BAT

have fun

BIOFAN 23-06-2007 11:50 PM

me again :)

one minor mistake:
instead of INSTALL TYPE = LARGE you could and should choose TINY since we don't need to copy the files from our "CD". every other option will be a waste of space.

have fun

So Biofan, the only thing in the game directory will be the X folder and the BAT file? Or am I missing something?

PorkSalad 24-06-2007 03:35 AM

Can anyone explain to me what keys to use?? I can't figure out what to do when the game starts

Amayirot Akago 24-06-2007 08:43 AM

Ah, BioForge. I loved this game to death back in the day on my good ol' 486... may she rest in peace. Too bad I never finished it.

I can't figure it out either. The only key that works for me is 'L' (for loading and restarting a game).

rsdworker 24-06-2007 09:37 AM

i having a trouble - i followed all steps and DOS said bioforge has encountered an error during gameplay - what wrong? :sos: - i am bit annoyed because i had reinstall many times - and nothing works so please could sort out it supposed working correctly

Guest 24-06-2007 03:07 PM

The game installs and runs fine, but after I select the combat difficulty on the main menu, I just get a black screen with some music in the background. What's going on?

no, there are also the installed files from "CD" (aka. the substituted drive S:).
the problem with the ZIP archive is the included INSTALL.OPT file. there are wrong paths written.
you can look at it with notepad. its a simple text file. the wrong paths (C:\BIOF\ in this case) causes
the game to fail. therefor my fix suggests a complete new "CD-installation".
folder X\ contains the ripped files from CD. and because the game wants a CD inserted, we fake it with the SUBST command, which maps a given path to a new drive letter. in this case drive S:.
after the game is installed we have to fake the CD (mount/subst to letter S: or every other drive letter you used for installation) every time we want to play the game.
this is what the batch file does: substitute folder X\ to drive S: and start the game.
you can use every other path or drives, but then you have to fix the batch file. no big deal tho, but i wanted to give a guide that doesn't mess around much.

so in short you only need X\ and the .BAT from the ZIP. but you have to put it somewhere for later use.
and for convenience its stored in the game installation directory.

hope this makes it more clear for you.

ok, here a little guide for newbies :)

- to move around use arrow keys or keypad (i recommend the latter)
- RETURN/ENTER to pick up/drop objects
- SPACE to use ready items in left hand or objects
- I for inventory; select an item and click READY to use it with SPACE.
press I to put ready item in inventory.
weapons are hold in right hand, items left
- C for toggle COMBAT MODE
- KEYPAD-5 fires weapon
- J for journal (every time you hear a *BING*, you have a new entry)
- O for options/save/load/exit
- S for save a game
- L for load a game
- R the all-important key in game! :bleh:

MOVEMENT (keypad):
- 7/8/9: move left/forward/right
- 4/-/6: rotate left/right
- 1/2/3: step left/back/right

COMBAT MODE: (rough description)
- hold CTRL and press keypad keys to kick
- 7/8/9 kick high/header/spin kick (a what it may be called)
- 4/-/6 kick middle left/right
- 1/2/3 kick low left/back flip/right

- hold ALT and press keypad keys to punch
- 7/8/9 punch left/above/right
- 4/-/6 punch middle left/right
- 1/2/3 dodge/block

hope that helps
have fun

argh, me dummy :blink:

forgot to mention the almighty SHIFT key for running/faster turn <_<

BIOFAN 24-06-2007 04:37 PM

duh,
one more key for you :wallbash:

- D for diagnosis screen to heal yourself/reload energy

this should be the last one, i hope :whistling:

Guest 24-06-2007 05:35 PM

My problem is I don't know where the "CD" installed to... like where would the default path be? I don't know where to put the X folder and .BAT file, I don't know where the install directory is.

:tai: :hairpull: :whops:

THis is my mistake guys, i can't believe i missed this. There wasn't supposed to be this BIOF directory, only C: but i missed this. That is why you can't get it to work and it worked fine for me.

All right, the easiest way would be to simply erase every BIOF and BIOFORGE from the INSTALL.OPT and mount your BIOFORGE directory as c: in DosBox. You can open INSTALL.OPT with notepad.

This is how INSTALL.OPT shoul look when sound card is set to none

Dir=C:\X\BIO\BIOFORGE
TempDir=C:\
PlayDir=C:\gamedat
text=C:\X\BIO\BIOFORGE\monitors\text.flx
MsgPathE=C:\script\Emessage.txt
MsgPathF=C:\script\Fmessage.txt
MsgPathG=C:\script\Gmessage.txt
language=E
KeyboardExt=E
Soundvol=100
Musicvol=100
Gamma=50
ScriptDir=C:\script\*.*
Figures=C:\body
Items=C:\items
MusicPath=C:\music\music.flx
SoundDir=C:\sound
SPEED_FACTOR=2
_TIMETEST=1
subtitles=1
SOUND=OFF
SndPort=0
SndIRQ=0
SndDMA=0
SndCardId=0
MUSIC=OFF
MusicPort=0
MusicCardId=0

Now if for example your Bioforge directory is in D:\GAMES\BIOFORGE simply mount in Dosbox like this
mount c: d:\games\bioforge

then you can start install to set sound and after that run Bioforge.bat

You need to make virtual S: which is copy of X directory but that is done in BIOFORGE.BAT so you don't have to delete the subst S: because it is done from DOsBox.

I'M VERY SORRY, i will fix the problem right away, i just need to put this modified INSTALL.OPT in the archive, only it might take some time to upload

Guest 24-06-2007 08:18 PM

Biofan, I tried every key you posted in #20, but in the very beginning when the cyborg is lying on the bed, the only key that works for me is 'L'.
And I do have a numpad and arrow keys which work, they even work in the Load Menu in this game.

I did a full install from the CD in the X folder.
And I'm running Dosbox 0.70

Also, I don't see a mouse cursor when the cyborg is asleep, but I do see one in the Load menu and the difficulty selection.

Am I missing something or is the game not working right for me?

Guest 24-06-2007 08:21 PM

And to add to that, I do hear music, the game runs smoothly. I see the Health monitor behind the Cyborg moving. And I see some blinking blue pixels on the evil-looking R2D2.

BIOFAN 24-06-2007 08:39 PM

to complicate things further :w00t:, you can even let all this SUBST stuff aside and set DIR in INSTALL.OPT to the correct path
e.g. Dir=C:\BIOFORGE\X\BIO\BIOFORGE or as writen by marko_river Dir=C:\X\BIO\BIOFORGE if you choose to mount the install directory as C:
the you can start with BIOFORGE.EXE and forget any SUBST.

the only reason why i took the "fresh new install" approach is that "DOS newbies" might get confused up with config files and messy paths.

@GUEST: in the beginning you have to wait .. your cyborg is paralyzed :) so he needs a sec to wake up. this is part of the game!

PS: if you get black screens with music in dosbox after starting, it might be that your box is configured to "slow".
hit CTRL+F12 several times and wait. if it starts, tune your box for maximum pleasure :bleh:
i recommend the following entries in your dosbox.conf/dosboxrc:
Code:

[cpu]
core=dynamic
cycles=max
cycleup=1000
cycledown=1000

for further tuning read the documentation @ dosbox.sf.net/wiki

PPS: if your game crashes like mine at the color puzzle near the end and you use dosbox 0.7, downgrade to 0.65!
that solved the problem for me.

have fun

if you are going to fix the zip package, i suggest you repack a complete new TINY INSTALL with the fixed path entries in INSTALL.OPT.
go with the default install dir C:\BIOFORGE and point in the review page, that it MUST be copied to C:\BIOFORGE and remove the .BAT
this way the compressed .zip (at max) gets under 50MB (~15MB saved).
this way it should be working pretty straight forward.

just my two cent

Sonicfan37 25-06-2007 09:39 PM

Ok, so I get that you need to wait for your robot guy to wake up... but for how long? I've been waiting for... a long time now. And should Numlock be on or off?

Oh, and simply copy and paste the install.opt text from the earlier post into your install.opt file for anyone who is having trouble getting the game to run.

marko river 26-06-2007 10:25 AM

Yes, copy paste of install.opt will do the trick.

As for awakening, you actually need to wait for a few shake-ups (they are not earthquakes as you will discover later) that will awake him. After that you have to press buttons to get up, don't know which one exactly, i never had the problem with it.
I suggest playing on numpad but still don't know should numlock be on or off.

Also, i finished entire game in DosBox 0.65, i didn't know that there might be some problems near the end.

As for the cycles, i actually got the best results when lowering the cycles. I played it on PentiumIII and i always set default cycles to 5000. But in this case it was smooter in 4000 cycles. Don't know about faster computers.

on version 0.70 the entire dosbox crashed every time after about 2-3 seconds on the color puzzle panel.
impossible to solve. and sometimes i got crashes on the cell block door panel too.
its definitely a 0.70 thing, since 0.65 worked stable. after the puzzle i finished the game with 0.70.

maybe its just something with the linux version i use, dunno about windows.

Sonicfan37 26-06-2007 09:11 PM

Attention anyone who can't get Lex to wake up at the beginning!

If he doesn't get up, this is a problem with how you've set up your sound card in the Install Program. Make sure you've got the IRQ set correctly. (For example, I use dosbox and it sets the IRQ to 7, but by default the IRQ in the install program is 5.) If the sound card is improperly set up, nothing will happen in the game.

To test this, see if there's speech going on in the intro to the game. If there's no speech, your sound card is not set up right.

marko river 27-06-2007 02:28 PM

All right, i uploaded smaller archive and fixed instalation info.

Now, somebody won't mind downloading it again and trying it out, it would be appreciated.
If you download new archive, you have to make DosBox to see your Bioforge directory as C:\Bioforge

Example: if Bioforge directory path on your computer is D:\Games\Bioforge
type mount c: d:\games

Also, i'll put a short manual too in the extras soon

OK, now i hope it will be easier to get around now that everything is set. BIG THANKS to Biofan for his help.

So, Biofan, why don't you register as a member and keep on supplying some useful stuff like this info :D

Guest 28-06-2007 10:21 AM

Great addition,
Though screenshots are way to bright, or is it just me?

marko river 28-06-2007 04:23 PM

Possible, i increased gamma because it seemed to dark for the public. This way you get to see all clearly, when you play you can set the more "mystic" mode :)

Qabach 30-06-2007 06:38 AM

I've reached an impasse in the game.
I don't want to go too much into detail in case spoilers are a problem, so I'll be vague. If you need more details, I can give them.

After meeting Mastaba in person, I woke up without my gun. After trying many times to complete the reactor room, I checked some walkthroughs, all of which either assume that I have a gun or tell me to go get one where I originally got one (and yes, I went back there to make sure there wasn't another.)

Is that savegame completely toast? If so, how do I prevent this if I play through again?

Qabach 30-06-2007 06:41 AM

I just read a different walkthrough and it explained an obvious way to get another gun. I guess I'm fine, other than having left a pointless post on here :P

Sonicfan37 30-06-2007 12:35 PM

Here's a hint, Qabach: Edit your previous post so you don't double post... some people might get a little angry if you do.

Being unregistered, nobody really expects much of you, but...

Guest 01-07-2007 07:18 PM

Hi!
I can´t kick or punsh at the beginning.
All i do is walk around like a turtle and wait for the robot to "kill" me.
What can i do? how should it work? keeping "alt" or "cntr" pressed and hiting the numpad keys? num-lock on or of?
thx,
ZaR

JimmyJ 02-07-2007 05:36 AM

ZaR, to attack, press the"c" key on your keyboard, then hold alt or ctrl and press the numpad keys.. pressing teh c key first gets you into combat mode.

marko river 02-07-2007 04:50 PM

It's been a while, but i think that you should check reactor room before Mastaba, or not?
Anyway, i think you don't need laser really, i don't remember shooting much there. Alien will block your way so you need to get rid of it. Since you can't kill him yet, you have to make it fall. so the only solution is hand-to-hand combat, because that way you can make it fall behind and eventually to fall from the laser bridge. Other solution is to drag it to the bridge and shut it off but you need to be extra fast, i couldn't do it that way at least, so i had to fight.

Hope this helps :)

JimmyJ 02-07-2007 08:58 PM

I always got a new pistol from the guard in the hall before the reactor room, and then, when I'm in the reactor room, I shoot the alien a couple times from the bridge, he charges at me, and I run and turn off the bridge and then he'll fall.. Its easier that trying to make him chase you from hand to hand combat, because he'd just walk to the bridge then run away.

marko river 03-07-2007 02:14 PM

Yap, that's the way to do it. I was fighting it to throw it from the bridge but i remember when playing the game when it was released that there was an easier way.

GelleKlara 06-07-2007 03:49 AM

Argh!

I can't get it to run. I've adjusted the mounting and everything, but I keep getting a crash while it's loading and an error message that says it can't find emessage.txt, yet it's right there in the script folder where it's looking for it. What can I do?

The Fifth Horseman 06-07-2007 04:29 AM

Reinstall the game.

GelleKlara 06-07-2007 04:34 AM

Unfortuanately I did, more than once. I'll try again just in case.

The Fifth Horseman 06-07-2007 04:38 AM

Are you sure you have unpacked the archive correctly, then? What's the precise error message?

GelleKlara 06-07-2007 04:47 AM

I'm pretty sure I unpacked it correctly. It's not in funky folders or anything...

The error message is:

Cannot find file: C:\BIOFORGE\script\Emessage.txt 0

I wonder if that zero at the end is the problem or just some part of the error message. EMESSAGE.TXT is in the C:\BIOFORGE\SCRIPT folder.

The Fifth Horseman 06-07-2007 04:52 AM

C:\BIOFORGE\SCRIPT is the path in DOSBox?
Or do you mount C:\BIOFORGE as your C drive in DOSBox?
Remember that the paths in DOSBox are not the same as in Windows...

GelleKlara 06-07-2007 07:41 AM

The path in DOSBox is C:\BIOFORGE not C:\BIOFORGE\SCRIPT.

It's mounted as C:\BIOFORGE but doesn't work at all unless I also mount C:\BIOFORGE\X as the CD-Rom drive, so I have C:\BIOFORGE mounted as the C drive and C:\BIOFORGE\X mounted as the CD-Rom drive H (that's my CD-Rom drive and it's the drive letter it was looking for before I mounted the CD-Rom drive).

Should I change the mounting to C:\BIOFORGE\SCRIPT? If I do that it won't look in the right place for the other stuff, will it?

marko river 06-07-2007 04:32 PM

Now i'm totaly lost...
With Biofan's suggestion i tried out to run the game with tiny installation and without making directory X as CD drive (i made BAT file with SUBST S: X command)

It worked fine for me if Dosbox see yuor Bioforge directory as C:\Bioforge - I just runed Bioforge.exe and everything was fine.

If you installed more than once than that might be the problem because the paths of the instalation will be saved in INSTALL.OPT
You might want to check that file (open it with Notepad or Wordpad)

If you want to try to install it once again, do it from Dosbox with location you want to install it in already mounted as C:
Then Install.OPT will memorize that path of Bioforge directory is C:\Bioforge (although you may install it at for example D:\Games if that was mounted as C:). After that make sure that Bioforge directory is C:\Bioforge in Dosbox as i already mentioned. It requires no CD check then, at least in my experience

I've tried the tiny install using DOSBox and it installed fine (apparently). I have the mounting path set properly in DOSBox, but it still can't seem to find the Emessage.txt file even though it's clearly in the SCRIPTS folder. I don't know why! This is driving me insane.

Jambobo 08-07-2007 06:17 AM

Has anyone been able to see the ending? I got to the very last part of the game but for some reason it's impossible to do the last thing in order to trigger the ending. (I don't want to be specific.) I'm using DOSBox 0.70

Jambobo 08-07-2007 06:23 AM

Never mind. I was just doing it wrong! :whistling:

you probably remounted the game in different virtual directory after the install. so try redownloading, installing again and running with the same mounted directory.

but its difficult to tell like this since you wrote us no info on commands, niether where is your game located or anything

Fletch Lives 08-07-2007 10:49 PM

Hi there. I followed the installation steps posted by BIOFAN which have been easy to follow for the most part but I am running into problems. I am able to get through the installation without a problem using the "TINY" install. However, after the part where I am supposed to quit dosbox and move folders I start getting lost. You mention that I should move the X\ folder and the BIOFORGE.BAT file from the BIOTEMP folder, but I see no BIOFORGE.BAT anywhere. The only batch files I even see are README.BAT and RESTART.BAT. Am I missing something here?

I know the game will work just fine because if I go through the install and just decide to run the game before exiting dosbox, as you mentioned, I can play the game. Once I quit though, I can't get back to it. HELP!

_r.u.s.s. 08-07-2007 11:29 PM

dont follow his instructions, the archive was re-made

for all those who have problems with emessage.txt, please use default patch for the game, its c:\bioforge
so no matter where you extract the game, make sure you will acces the directory via C:\bioforge in dosbox.

for example, if i had my game extracted in c:\games\bioforge, the mount command would be "mount c: c:\games"
or, if my game were located in d:\myoldies\bioforge, command would be "mount c: d:\myoldies"

then acces the directory with "cd bioforge", run install.exe, select proper music card and sound card (if you wont select proper sound card, the game will freeze on begining) and after you finish the install, type "bioforge.exe"

rsdworker 09-07-2007 12:22 AM

how i can fix the emessage txt = where the patch?

_r.u.s.s. 09-07-2007 12:35 AM

erm, read the post above dude

Guest 10-07-2007 08:20 PM

ok i have tried ever single instruction here and the thing still wont run.

_r.u.s.s. 10-07-2007 08:28 PM

where is your game unzipped on your hard drive?

Apflstrudl 12-07-2007 09:42 AM

OK, I got it to work (no idea what I did), but the next problem is that the graphics get turned 90 degrees when I try to go full screen. Any ideas?

apflstrudl 12-07-2007 09:47 AM

SORRY, ignore that question: I found the solution in my screen setups.

Cheers

*to Fletch Lives

Archive is changed and now you don't need bioforge.bat

I hope that now there is no need to install the game again with the proper mount. Mount like r.u.s.s. said on previous page.

Also, if you already installed or for some other reason want to install again, do it from DosBox. How? You must mount DosBox as explained and then install to c:\bioforge again, everything should be ok. If you have problems with paths again check that file INSTALL.OPT with any text editor (like Notepad) and see are paths set as c:\bioforge\.... still not all paths are like this but if there are any paths like c:\SOME_OTHER_DIR\bioforge it won't work and you probably installed it wrong somehow.

At the and one more question to Fletch Lives: is that the name of the movie with that actor from 3 Amigos, hmmm i think his name is somethign like Chasy or Casey or something. The movie is sequel to the first Fletch i think and Fletch is reporter i guess. Good movies with GREAT music. I hope to get those songs somehow, perhaps you know something :D

Hi everyone on this forum. I'm new here.

*Warning. The following lines may represent a little spoiler for some*

I've been playing Bioforge a long time ago. Nowadays I've started playing with it again. Great game!
However I have a trouble in the beginning of the game. I'm stuck in the guard room and can't unlock the door (I've already read some walkthroughs, but didn't succed in doing what they say). All I know to do is putting the nursebot holding Caynan's blue arm in front of the palm reader in guard room and then typing Caynan's security code in one of the monitors. I did it, but it won't work; even if I try different positions of the nursebot in front of palm reader, the monitor keeps telling me "Invalid code! Palm restoration denied".
Can anyone help me? Thanks.

_r.u.s.s. 17-07-2007 02:34 PM

you just have to try, i have no idea where could be a problem. bring the bot with holding arm in front of the scanner near a door, search for code in one of the diaries, type it in to the terminal

Hi _r.u.s.s. thanks for replying.
I've tried several times, but I can assure that it won't work;somewhere I read that a demo version of Bioforge exists. In the demo they assume that you can't go beyond a certain point, so I was wondering if I had the demo version (but I don't think so) and that point was the Guard Room.

sorry that it took so long, i had to download the game.
did you actually notice that your savefile says 'demo.im1'?=P (full game saves are like 'gameX.im1', where X is the order number)
it IS the demo version. and my full version from abandonia didnt even want to load the game. so download it from here and i guess it will work=)

fight system sucks 22-07-2007 01:46 PM

I hate this game. It's one of the most frustrating game i ever played. The fight system sucks. I don't know what direction my character facing, so often i kick in to the air. More, often it happens that on screen my punch get into the enemy, but he got no harm. I do hate it. Whats more, my key pushes are buffered someware (wheel, may be it is dosbox issue) so my character always does one more action then i planed.
The plot is quite interesting, so if there was "good more" or "adventure mode"... do you know any cheats?

memeyou 22-07-2007 09:54 PM

Oh my! I remember playing this on my AMD 486 DX 100MHz! The box was black with a green robotic hand - the story was kind of creepy - beating stuff with your busted arm and such.

Actually, when in combat mode you just need to stop hitting and you will automatically turn to the enemy. Fighting gave me some problems too before realizing this (I was never a RTFM kind of playe :D it has some lacks i guess), but generally game is not that hard, except for that alien. Camera angles may be a minus to the game but it's still great game.

Good game though. :ok:

One of my favororites from the time period, definetly. I remember playing this through with my cousin and it was damn difficult, but we did it. We actually even wrote a walkthrough to it.

It was one of the darkest and moodies games then. A nostalgy trip for sure!

Check out Comportal, this guy created the bioforge tools needed to view/extract most of the file formats.

Website: http://comport.homedns.org

He hosts a bunch of production shots from bioforge, includes the box covers mentioned above... Along with high resolution shots and other misc. stuff.

Bioforge Production Shots:
http://comport.homedns.org/component/optio...id,17/Itemid,33

Also here's hoping someone out there is interesting in helping him out making a remake of the Bioforge engine.
Quote:

After hitting over 300 downloads of Bioforge Tools and 5 "Hell Yeah!" votes to the "Would you like to see a Bioforge remake for Windows/Linux?" poll I have decided to start on a Bioforge remake project! This announcement in no way means you will see a complete remake anytime soon, especially if I can't get others who are interested in helping. On that note I'm looking for anyone who wants to help out. So if you have any coding skills (especially game design and/or scripting), graphics/web design skills (I hope to start up a site/forum for this project), even if you have no skills you could always provide motivation! So if you're interested and want to know more click on the Read More link below.

The current status of the project:
The remake will be written in C++ and will be made cross-platform compatible for Windows, Linux, OSX (will need a coder who uses OSX to support this port). See next point for libraries which will be used.
Library set has been decided upon. After trying out a few options (SDL, Allegro, ClanLib, etc.) I have decided on GLFW (for graphics, input, threads), and FMOD (for sounds/music).
FLX reader has been rewritten in C++ (including wav/midi extraction code) and has been tested with FMOD sound system.
CAM reader has been rewritten in C++
FLC (SHO) reader has been rewritten in C++
SALSA reader is in the process (25%) of being rewritten in C++
Level IFF file format partially decoded (can now view wireframe model of levels and camera locations)

What needs to be done:
SCR (script) file format needs to be worked out and an interpreter written. Worst case scenario (format remains elusive) scripts could be rewritten in a scripting language such as lua.
FNT (font) file format needs to be worked out (should be fairly straight forward). Worst case scenario - just use custom fonts. This is not a priority but would be nice.
Lot's of small things ...
The engine!
Subversion source control setup (if I can't get more of you on board)
Dedicated website / forum ... let me know if you want to help out with this (if you have some server space, want to be a maintainer / moderator / news person, design some cool graphics and web design)

So if you're interested in the project I look forward to some help![/b]

Bioforge is an odd game - it's definately buggy but like many old DOS games, the games that were buggy never got patched or the patches are incredibly hard to find.

The Dutch Ghost 01-12-2007 12:44 AM

Hello all,

This is a pretty cool game, I remember buying it just for the Christmas holidays years ago.
Though the story was great I always had some problems with the controls, especially the combat part, perhaps a control pad would have been better.

Years later I picked up the Bioforge strategy guide.
Great book as next to all solutions it also featured a lot of background on the ingame universe, and it was written from the viewpoint of a character that could have been in the game; an AI - not Lex the Cyborg.

pokrface 19-10-2008 06:13 AM

Reinstalled this game after being away from it for a looooooong time, and remembered that there's a lot of hacking around you can do with the game's script files. One thing you can quickly and easily do is give yourself a huge amount of battery power--enough that you don't really ever have to worry about bot being able to heal yourself.

To do it, open x:\bioforge\script\items.scp in your favorite text editor and search for the string "GIVELEXSTARTINGBATT" (Lex is the name by which the game's authors refer to the player character). You'll find a section that looks like this:

Code:

{ GIVELEXSTARTINGBATT
        @            PLAYER
        e      MONBAT
        n          CURITEM MY_BATTERY
        f      INVENTORY
        .              = 100
        .              = 100
        .              = $
}

The "100" is the amount of energy contained in your starting battery. Change it to a higher number. I used 10000:

Code:

{ GIVELEXSTARTINGBATT
        @            PLAYER
        e      MONBAT
        n          CURITEM MY_BATTERY
        f      INVENTORY
        .              = 10000
        .              = 10000
        .              = $
}

...like so.

After you do this, Lex's battery meter will no longer have a number next to it, since 10000 is higher than the designers ever anticipated the readout needing to show. You will be able to charge your built-in alien gun and heal yourself a whole hell of a lot. I suck at this game, so I was healing myself from near-death after every single fight, and by the end of the game I still had used up only two bars on my battery meter.

A word of warning, though: if you insert another battery into Lex's battery compartment and then put back your original battery, you lose your gigantic charge, because the game uses additional scripts to figure out how much battery power you're supposed to have after that. Solution--DON'T USE ANY OF THE THREE OTHER BATTERIES YOU FIND IN THE GAME. There's a battery in Dane on the operating table, a battery in the Icarus, and a battery you get from the alien dude. Leave 'em where you find 'em. Only at the very end, when you need a battery for the Icarus, should you take out Lex's battery (and swap it for the one in the craft's nose).

Enjoy, have fun, etc. Fiddle around with the rest of the script files--there's tons of neat stuff in there and I'm sure you can do some awesome stuff. Hint: start with the nursebot at the beginning.

red_avatar 19-10-2008 09:39 AM

I completed this game ages ago - wonderful game for its time but yeah, combat is a bit random at times. You just move too slowly and the animations can really cause frustration. You end up hitting air when you think you're hitting your target etc.

Man, oddly enough: this game was easier on my 486 which could barely play it, because the game was so slow, it gave me time to properly aim.

CaveSoundMajster 04-01-2009 05:22 AM

demo problem

I have the "demo-problem" that was mentioned above in the discussion: no code is letting me out of the guard room and the game save files are named "demoX" (where x is a number), not "gameX". The thing is I run the iso version downloaded from oldgames.sk which is 170mb size, and it certainly contains the full version in this 170megs... Seems though that the iso is corrupted and installs me demo instead of full version. The checksum of the cd shows 4 files mismatch: 2.fnt, 4.fnt, install.exe and install.msg.

See any solution to this? (i emailed the owner of oldgames.sk already, but in case he doesn't respond your help would be appreciated).

Maybe someone would send me the correct version of the supposedly corrupted files mentioned above (copy them form cd) and if i replace them everything will start going smoothly?

Of course the abandonia version is fully operational but I want to see all the fmvs and voices and all that was ripped off.

A Little Help For Some Of You...

http://www.dosgames.com/forum/about10219.html

I used the above instructions and everything runs fine. Even off my iPod (using it as an external drive) it runs great.

This game is fantastic and more people should know about it.

Simoneer 12-03-2009 09:45 PM

Pfft. I can't get it to work! I have the error people were talking about in the first pages. I tried the solution given by BIOFAN, but it's still not working.

Any ideas?

I don't have that Bioforge.bat file people are talking about, though. Only an exe.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just read that the archive was remade. I'll find another solution then. :P

EDIT 2: Oh. That so-called ''solution'' was freakin' easy. I'm definitely a DOSBox noob. Thanks, _r.u.s.s. (who isn't Russ).

Running Bioforge ...

Ok. This is what I did, but umm, there may be simpler methods out there!
Needless to say atleast it runs from my Vista 64 bit desktop Icon beautifully.
First read th nfo file from th gentleman who is I presume th original uploader.So-o, go into the folder : X.
After reading th nfo txt click on install, naturally this must be run from dosbox having mounted both your Hard drive AND most importantly your Fake CD drive. Ok? So, th command is as follow; (from dosbox)

mount C C:\
and then type:
subst D C:\bioforge\X\Bio
(then)
C:
(then)
Bioforge
Dosbox will complain about using the wildcard C, just ignore it and push on..
Now, once it has been installed somewhere on your C drive i.e C:\Bioforge,
you will have two seperate installations...U need both of then coz Bioforge initializes from the CD-rom first.
So-o lets say you installed the original zip into C:\temp, and lets say U have sucessfully installed onto C, then execute dos-box and type the following and it will launch :
mount C C:\
subst D C:\Temp\Bioforge\X\Bio
(and finally)
Bioforge.exe

Hope this helps,
Jules

jules-boo 16-03-2009 12:01 AM

Woops, obviously this was written for those new to dos-box and its arcane commands, so I've left out 1 command, before you finally execute Bioforge from its correctly installed folder, go back to your C drive mount by typing:
C:
so-o, it goes C:
and then
Bioforge.exe

as I said before I hope this has helped someone and not muddied th waters even further

Jules

Hello!

Seems like people haven't been posting since 2007... Anyway, I'll give it a try.

I'm a huge fan of BioForge and it is one of the best games I've ever played, overall. I still have the original CD and box with manuals and everything, even if I wasn't playing anymore, I just kept it because I liked it so much.
Now I find this excellent website, Abandonia, with a respectable amount of info in many old games... Well, I'm living in another country and felt the desire of playing again this awesome game, and so I downloaded it and it is running very good. Problem is: I'm running on DOSBox, on a MacBook Pro, and I just can't fight. After getting ready with combat mode, I've tried holding down command, control, alt, and every other key, and the numbers on my numpad (it is a external one, since notebooks don't have them), but I won't attack.
Anyone have any solution?
Thanks in advance.

dosraider 25-05-2009 01:37 AM

You must first hit C to go in combat mode , then ctrl or alt + numpad keys.
That's the way it works on a PC.
If you can't get it to work on a @#@#@# Mac try to remap the keys in dosbox.

leopat 25-05-2009 04:58 AM

Yes, it won't work, like I said, I can get into combat mode (hit C) but then it won't do anything. How do I remap the keys in dosbox?

dosraider 25-05-2009 05:02 AM

Dosbox folder -> read me.
All explained there.

[Edit]
BTW, thought that for CTRL+F1 to work on Mac you must be full screen ... or something.
#@#@#@ Mac.

leopat 25-05-2009 07:37 AM

Yes, I have searched everything before posting here. I wouldn't post if it was working.
And what is it about #@#@#@ Mac?

_r.u.s.s. 25-05-2009 08:24 AM

but dosraider already answered that you need to ctrl+f1 to remap it, why'd he use a front end if his dosbox works..?

When you start the DOSBox mapper (either with CTRL-F1 or -startmapper as
a command line argument to the DOSBox executable) you are presented with
a virtual keyboard and a virtual joystick.

These virtual devices correspond to the keys DOSBox will report to the
DOS applications. If you click on a key with your mouse, you can see in
the lower left corner with which event it is associated (EVENT) and to
what events it is currently bound.

Event: EVENT
BIND: BIND
Add Del
mod1 hold Next
mod2
mod3

EVENT
The key or joystick axis/button/hat DOSBox will report to DOS applications.
BIND
The key on your real keyboard or the axis/button/hat on your real
joystick(s) (as reported by SDL) which is connected to the EVENT.
mod1,2,3
Modfiers. These are keys you need to have to be pressed while pressing
BIND. mod1 = CTRL and mod2 = ALT. These are generally only used when you
want to change the special keys of DOSBox.
Add
Add a new BIND to this EVENT. Basically add a key from your keyboard or an
event from the joystick (button press, axis/hat movement) which will
produce the EVENT in DOSBox.
Del
Delete the BIND to this EVENT. If an EVENT has no BINDS, then it is not
possible to trigger this event in DOSBox (that is there's no way to type
the key or use the respective action of the joystick).
Next
Go through the list of bindings which map to this EVENT.

Example:
Q1. You want to have the X on your keyboard to type a Z in DOSBox.
A. Click on the Z on the keyboard mapper. Click "Add".
Now press the X key on your keyboard.

Q2. If you click "Next" a couple of times, you will notice that the Z on your
keyboard also produces an Z in DOSBox.
A. Therefore select the Z again, and click "Next" until you have the Z on
your keyboard. Now click "Del".

Q3. If you try it out in DOSBox, you will notice that pressing X makes ZX
appear.
A. The X on your keyboard is still mapped to the X as well! Click on
the X in the keyboard mapper and search with "Next" until you find the
mapped key X. Click "Del".

Examples about remapping the joystick:
You have a joystick attached, it is working fine under DOSBox and you
want to play some keyboard-only game with the joystick (it is assumed
that the game is controlled by the arrows on the keyboard):
1) Start the mapper, then click on one of the arrows in the middle
of the left part of the screen (right above the Mod1/Mod2 buttons).
EVENT should be key_left. Now click on Add and move your joystick
in the respective direction, this should add an event to the BIND.
2) Repeat the above for the missing three directions, additionally
the buttons of the joystick can be remapped as well (fire/jump).
3) Click on Save, then on Exit and test it with some game.

You want to swap the y-axis of the joystick because some flightsim uses
the up/down joystick movement in a way you don't like, and it is not
configurable in the game itself:
1) Start the mapper and click on Y- in the upper joystick field (this
is for the first joystick if you have two joysticks attached) or the
lower joystick field (second joystick or, if you have only one
joystick attached, the second axes cross).
EVENT should be jaxis_0_1- (or jaxis_1_1-).
2) Click on Del to remove the current binding, then click Add and move
your joystick downwards. A new bind should be created.
3) Repeat this for Y+, save the layout and finally test it with some game.

If you change the default mapping, you can save your changes by clicking on
"Save". DOSBox will save the mapping to a location specified in the configfile
(mapperfile=mapper.txt). At startup, DOSBox will load your mapperfile, if it
is present in the configfile.

If this doesn't work with your dosbox reinstall dosbox, it's borked.

Mac? $%#& that.

Agreed. Mac is no machine for gamers.

Simoneer 25-05-2009 04:17 PM

Indeed. XD

leopat 25-05-2009 07:00 PM

Thank you, Arete. I will try that one.

To the others, I agree, Mac is not good for gaming, but some of us need to work, you know? And who can trust a PC these days?

P.S.: Have a PC with Linux in here, but it is a desktop and I want to play exactly when I'm on my brakes.

_r.u.s.s. 25-05-2009 09:03 PM

we were joking dude=P
but yeah, #@#@#@ Mac.

PS: i don't mean to turn this into another mac vs windows discussion, but first of all, mac is pc. and second of all, i work and code both on my windows box and linux box pretty well, it's only the name, price, design and commercials that make mac "better for work". utter bullshit

If you don't want to turn this into another mac vs windows discussion, it is fine by me. But, yes, Mac is a PC, by the way, it was the first to be a PC, but you know what I mean... And I don't think you understand the difference between fanboys buying iPhones and all of a sudden loving Apple, and professionals who depend on softwares that will run only in one or another platform. I do not code, except some really basic stuff for my needs, but if Mac are not more reliable, explain how I've worked with Windows for 7 years and Mac for about 4, and I most of my frustrations was on Windows.

By the way, I don't mean to take any side in this. I love Windows from 3.11 to XP, I'm pretty happy with Ubuntu now, and the only reason I wanted to run BioForge on my Mac is because this is my notebook and I have it most of the time with me.

red_avatar 26-05-2009 07:44 AM

Meh, the way I see it:
- Macs use expensive hardware and charge a premium on top of that
- Macs use standardized hardware ... and charge a premium on top of that
- as a result, they can focus on proper drivers for that hardware.

Expensive hardware + drivers that have had a LOT of time to be developed = a stable system

On the other hand, XP and Vista are rock solid today despite having millions of different driver & hardware configurations. The main frustration with Windows, comes from people who spend next to nothing on a crappy PC and expect it to run like a Mac. Some Mac fanboys at work bought a PC at Aldi (a European store that is very very cheap) and then went to compare it to a Mac that cost 4 times that amount :sucks:

Buy a proper PC, get a proper anti-virus, and you'll rarely have any problems. In fact, the Macs at work have to reboot WAY more than my workstation PC. Macs are not great on networks either - they'll often refuse to connect to a server until you reboot. Heck, they'll drop the connection now and then as well. When it comes to networks, Macs are still primitive. And of course, servers are always PCs.

In the end, if you want freedom of hardware, a smaller dent in your wallet and a much larger software base ... well PC is the best way to go. If you want to use your computer for making your own vids and stuff with integrated software, if you want things to be simpler, if you want to pay through the nose, wahey, Mac it is. The few programs thate are Mac-only only mean anything in a workplace that uses them.

leopat 04-07-2009 11:33 PM

Mac x Win aside, I'm stuck. *SPOILERS*

Ok, so I got the time to finally play the game again. Running on Linux with no problem, everything working fine.

Now, The last puzzle I remember from when I played back in the day was the hexagons one. Everything is fine, but now I can't get back to the room with the various tunnels. I got the new bat, the reflective cube and the baster, but I can't shoot in the room with no gravity, so I can't reach the other end.

The non working blaster is a glitch, or this is correct and I'm not thinking enough?

leopat 07-07-2009 02:21 PM

No one? Any help? Hello?

VORION 10-07-2009 04:09 PM

sorry leopat, i haven't reached so far in the game, so can't answer your question:((!

i am stuck in a place before that, just after killing the bot on level 4:flame::flame::sucks: would anyone please explain to me how do i open the door opposite the elevator next to the burning bot!! The puzzle has to do with the airlock configuration. I don't understand the pattern and the walkthroughs miss this point::bleh2::sneaky::sneaky:((!

VORION 10-07-2009 04:24 PM

what does it mean: the grid is in x-y emulation mode??!

leopat 10-07-2009 09:59 PM

@ Vorion

Think about it: O-ring. You have 9 squares. How do you make a ring out of it? :OK:

RATJUICE 14-07-2009 08:01 PM

a few things

I have seen intro movie for bioforge on youtube, but for me when I play this I don't see that.. I dunno why

also, Is there a way to get the game completely in english? some of the stuff isn't english, like item descriptions in inventory, also the log books.
If someone could help me with this I would be very grateful, thanks.

zirkoni 14-07-2009 08:13 PM

Try the version in ISO cellar.
(You have to be a registered user to access.)

I had this same problem. I found the solution for me was to open the folder called X in this folder there is another folder called bio. In there I found an installer which I run. The installed copy works fine for me.

Hope this helps

excellent - i had the same problem !

I'm not sure about that one, played it long ago. Are you sure that if blaster does not shoot you can't reach the other end? I'm not sure, but perhaps you do get the momentum when trying to fire with non-working blaster...

It won't. I've noticed that the Lex spins on a ellipsoidal trajectory, oscillating, and eventually it gets really close to the tunnel when this further part of the ellipse is aligned with the entrance, but I can never reach it. Blaster also won't make any difference in momentum. This is why I think it is a bug.
Haven't been playing since then, though, because it was my week off. I'll try something else, or even playing everything from the beginning, once I got some spare time again.

Capo 15-08-2009 05:23 PM

I have the annoyng cannot find Emessage.txt problem.
I have the iso version, any suggestion ?

Edit: resolved putting the folder Bioforge in a new folder called Dosprog so the working path is C:\Dosprog\Dosprog\Bioforge :)

That's weird.

Capo 21-08-2009 03:31 PM

I rate this game 3:

Very good story, background and atmosphere, but the movement and the combat are just terrible, luckly there arent many combat in the game.

Anyway is always good to play games that when they came out were unplayable for almost all the players :3:

..

Saccade 21-08-2009 04:08 PM

Can we play this multi-player..?

I think I've seen servers about somewhere that have Bioforge.
Or maybe it was Bioshock..?

:mhh:

Capo 21-08-2009 05:27 PM

I dont think bioforge can be played in multy :perv:

hi,

for all who have problems with this "release": here is my fix for DOSBOX user.
for pure DOS users it will work the same way IMO.

Code:

CD BIOFORGE
BIOFORGE.BAT

have fun

Thank you so much.

Don't forget you need to fake the CD again when you run.

so the last bit needs another line...
- start dosbox again
- start bioforge with the copied batch file:
Code:

CD BIOFORGE
SUBST s: x
BIOFORGE

BIOFORGE.BAT[/code]

mrplow 08-11-2009 03:54 PM

arg this forum sucks, where's edit.

disregard that 'bioforge.bat' last line part

How to fire?

Can anybody tell me how I can fire the weapon without having a numpad available? I’ve tried every possible key combination but the weapon won’t fire. Or is there a different way to take down these huge guard robots?

dosraider 13-12-2009 03:12 PM

Depends how you run the game ....
If you're using dosbox: remap the keys in the keymap utilty to keys you can use.

marquisor 17-01-2010 07:24 PM

random crashes in dosbox 0.73? anyone same issue?

dosraider 17-01-2010 07:27 PM

Not here, nope.

HuckleCat 14-08-2010 07:00 PM

Works fine for me in DosBox .74

I had this game when it was new. I really, really wanted to like it, but the controls, as well as the camera situation, just ended up frustrating the hell out of me.

I kept playing it though, and even finished it, but it was one of those things where once I beat it, I never, ever wanted to play it again.

After retrying it now with Dosbox, I quickly remembered how much I wanted to forget about it.

As a "fun look back" at the dawn of 3d gaming I'd tell someone to check it out, but as a serious good game to play, I'd pass.

tenfarther 27-08-2010 05:10 AM

small question

Hi everyone! I wanted to first start out by thanking everyone here that helped me get this memorable classic of a game to work and play! :)

One quick question though.. I've been playing the game and noticed through a walkthrough that while my sound works fine, that I have been missing out on the suspenseful music. Can someone help me find out how to get the music to work? Can I do so without reinstalling it, as I have already been playing? Your help would be appreciated. :)

dosraider 27-08-2010 09:35 AM

Run "install" from your bioforge dir and select SB(pro) for music card.

< *Wonders why sound & music are set to 'none' in AB archive ....?

tenfarther 28-08-2010 07:49 PM

Thanks!

Thank you dosraider! Although it was probably obvious to most, I am still generally computer illiterate and was afraid I would mess something up. You learn something new everyday! :)

I have almost been waiting or 1/2 of an hour for this great git to freaking wake up!!

Eirreann 16-10-2010 08:02 PM

Now seriously! There have been no "shake-ups" or anything! Just a bunch of blinking lights! The only button that works currently is the "l" key... Also, when I downloaded the game there was no "bioware.bat" file, is that important at all??

Codin 04-12-2010 07:31 PM

WY88R

Same problem here. No shake`ups, he just lies there oblivious to any command :(

Dr. Mastaba 30-12-2010 01:14 PM

When you have no 'shake-ups' please check your audio configuration.
The game can have problems when your audio settings are incorrect.
This probably has something to do with the rumbling sound...

My DOSBox 0.74 settings when running INSTALL.EXE:

Sound Card Type: "Sound Blaster Pro/16/16ASP"
Sound Card Settings: "PORT: 0x220 IRQ: 7 DMA: 1"
Music Card Type: "Sound Blaster (PORT: 0x388)"

Have fun! (and battle frustrations!...)

DanSolo 10-02-2011 10:09 PM

No sound...

Hi all. I've installed Bioforge OK I think under D-Fend and run the Install, but it crashes every time it tests the soundcard. Any ideas?

The Fifth Horseman 10-02-2011 10:15 PM

Wrong soundcard configuration or missing data files. Pick one.

DanSolo 10-02-2011 10:18 PM

I have the install.opt file in the folder OK and I've run the soundcard setup under D-Fend first.

OK, so any suggestions that aren't so obvious?

The Fifth Horseman 12-02-2011 12:44 PM

And you are absolutely double-checked certain it's neither of them?
Try a different copy of the game, or change the emulated soundcard and then change the game config to match.

DanSolo 12-02-2011 02:32 PM

I turned off sound in the installer and turned off sound in D-Fend.
It still crashes at the soundcard check.

dosraider 13-02-2011 06:14 AM

Don't use D-Fend.
Game runs fine directly in dosbox.

DanSolo 13-02-2011 10:31 PM

Yes! Thanks!
There was another folder called BIOFORGE inside the extracted folder, so I dumped the contents of that to the main folder and it runs brilliantly, sound and all. Only glitch is some of the backgrounds are messed and only partially appear as animations pass over them.
Now, let's find the game manual...

when i load it up on Dosbox it says
