Hi!

It's not that I couldn't play the old one.. :)
Does this version bring any considerable new stuff that would make this worth buying? Im seeing this game in discount in several places, so I was thinking of picking it up.

Opinions?

Thanks!

Doubler 12-08-2007 12:48 AM

The entire campaign and general graphic style is different. And obviously the game has moved to 3d. Despite this (:P), the graphics, not the best around, are still functional.

The economy functions the same as in Settlers 2, although the numbers have been tweaked (A Settlers 2 player will quickly notice). Also I got the feeling most maps have been set up radically different; at least my playstyle has changed a bit.

In the end, 10th Anniversary is a good choice if you want something new to go with the old Settlers 2 gameplay. There's nothing more, nothing's been added.

arand 12-08-2007 12:01 PM

Doubler did a rather good description there in my opinion.

However, one big new thing is the online/LAN multiplayer.

I, as a good fan of Settlers II, enjoy the 10thA.

What I miss is the music, which in 10thA is slightly boring, and actually the graphics, which is slightly too cartoony in my opinion.

The thing I like is the few but very convenient changes in "gameplay", i.e. "selling" buildings, specific emptying of military houses, improved massage system[EDIT: message ^_^ ], improved boats... etc.

Doubler 12-08-2007 02:21 PM

Heh, I actually play the game with the old music in the background. There's plenty of places where you can download the Settlers 2 midi score ;)

But yeah, I guess it's a nice touch they fixed the ship bug :P
I sometimes feel the function to empty military buildings might just be a tad too powerfull though.

Wow, I have to try that one out :D

Interesting. Can you specify a bit how you feel it different?

Thanks for the answers. I'll have to think about it a while thought.. In the end, why should I not play the old one? But in the end, why shouldn't I play a fresh new version? :D

Eagle of Fire 13-08-2007 07:22 AM

Originals are almost always better...

I am myself pretty turned off by the mention of "3D" graphics in the description.

I haven't gone by all the building costs or anything, if that's what you mean :P
It's just that at times you notice that your expectations about some recources are sometimes a bit off, or that some economic balance achieved in Settlers 2 doesn't apply to 10th Anniversary.

Why shouldn't you play Settlers 2? I see no reason not too. But if you want a different experience with the same gameplay, then 10th Anniversary is a choice you can make. It's as simple as that.

This is original, just different :P
Saying Settlers 2 is better then 10th is, imho, nostalgic nonsense. They're the same in almost everything that's made Settlers 2 a good game, gameplay wise. The only thing that's substantially different is in the way it is presented to you. The style which it has. I can imagine a preference for one or the other, but to say that one is better?
Just so you know the 3D isn't even unwieldy. You can zoom in, look around, whatever. You don't have to. Zoom out, and the view is pretty much the same as in Settlers 2. That's the way I usually play.

It's not abandonware etc but Gamespot has an open beta of settlers 6 at present which if you can stand the 10+ hour download of 1GB works pretty well and is quite a nice game if a little drawn out.

You only get the tutorial level for single player but you can play the multiplayer LAN and online games fully.

I will have to d/l settlers 1 this weekend for a comparrison :).

Nah, the settlers series kinda went sour at installment no. 3, in my opion at least...

S3 was the one which lost the roads, and hence lost the 'settlerism'.

But of course with the 10thA as the one exception.

In my opinion, the ultimate Settlers: Graphics and Music (the real music from the CD, that is) from SII, Gameplay/Improved elements from 10thA (excluding the stone-scarcity). Story from SII (10thA's is rotten), multiplayer from 10thA.
And that's about it.

The new Settlers is actually the first one to really interest me after Settlers 2. I hated that roads (etc.) were lost too, and the 'new' Settlers offered me little in return.

Rise of an Empire, however, seems like a completely different take on achieving similar goals. A Settlers-like, a spinn-off, rather then Settlers 6. It's not numbered, just so you know ;)

Edit: Ok, put it differently - The official title does not contain a number :P

I love this game, i'm also a big fan of Settlers 2, and i think it's a worthy "port" to modern tech :) Multiplayer is extremly fun.

For anybody in doubt whether to buy or not, there is always the fantastic phenomena called 'Demo': http://www.ubi.com/UK/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=1671 ^_^

I think the standard demo has a time-limit, but remedies are just a googling away...

The demo isnt a good measure of the game if you ask me, play the regular settlers 2 and imagine it with different graphics :O

Speaking of Settlers, anyone going to pick up the DS game? It's coming out pretty soon. Should be cool.

I saw a review of it in telly couple weeks back, it looked really nice! If I owned DS, I would definitely pick that one.

Matt Samyel 30-08-2007 07:44 PM

i didn't play this game, but i don't like its graphic, i will stay with 2d settlers

Ruststrong 31-08-2007 09:35 AM

IMO, the graphics in settlers 2 are good enough. There's no need to buy this new game just to 'improve' the graphics because they're good enough as they are. But thats just my opinion. :)

Matt Samyel 31-08-2007 09:42 AM

there are some new episodes, aren't they?

They're probably are new scenarios but if that's all they added, then...

Matt Samyel 31-08-2007 09:57 AM

eh, yes. I will rather use editor

Doubler 31-08-2007 12:32 PM

Like I said, old gameplay, different stuff. Don't expect exact Settlers 2, it just plays the same.

If you'd like to change your settlers 2 experience, just to get something different with the gameplay, there's Settlers 2 10th anniversary.
You shouldn't get it for 'new graphics' and certainly not for 'improved graphics', you should get it for 'different graphics'. You shouldn't get it for 'new maps', you should get it for 'different maps' - they do play differently, you know, although that's also due to the tweaked gameplay.

Don't look at this as an attempt to 'improve on' Settlers 2, that's not true and it won't get anyone anywhere. Way to subjective anyway. Look at it as an attempt to deliver something 'different' with the gameplay offered in Settlers 2.

Ok, what I said might have been subjective, but everyone has a different opinion. I just don't really like remakes of old games. But that's just my personal taste. And I respect that you think differently, which is what makes people unique. However, I can pretty honestly say, that I haven't read enough about The 10th Anniversary to make my final decision about the game. But from where I stand, it doesn't look like too much has been changed to make it better than the original settlers 2.

Doubler 01-09-2007 06:29 PM

That's what I'm trying to say. It isn't 'better' then the original. :D
It's different in feel and touch. For those wanting a change, or an increase in the scope of the 'game' (ie. gameplay).
And that's all it is. ;)

If you want to think in 'better or worse' I'd say they're pretty much exactly the same :P

Ok, glad we cleared that up. LOL

I'm going to check it one day... One day...

Great game! One of my favs!

Tri3Star 11-04-2010 08:11 PM

Doe anyone still have the crack to remove the time limit from the demo? All the links are dead...

The Fifth Horseman 11-04-2010 09:42 PM

Do you have the common sense to read the rules? Asking for cracks for recent games is not allowed here.

So you do or don't have the no time limit crack for this 'recent' demo, which was referenced earlier in this thread?

The Fifth Horseman 12-04-2010 05:28 AM

What I don't have is any desire to bother with disrespectful individuals who are trying to weasel their way around the rules.
