I remember years ago, finding a jewel-case computer game called "The Zork Legacy Collection" at a garage sale. Intrigued, I decided to get it. Thus I was introduced to the world of Zork, and text-based games, at that.
It really doesn't get any better than the original Zork! Except possibly Beyond Zork, which is my favorite.

I bought zork 1,2,3 in a single box and it came with a big metal zorkmid.:) It was so cool. I've lost it though.:(

Ahhhh, Yes 'Zork'. A classic game that redefined adventure games all together. Without 'Zork' there would be no 'Myst'. For anyone out there is cyber land, if you are interested in making (or trying to make) text style games or almost any kind of dos game, you should try QuickBasic. Its a programming platform that you can make many kinds of games on. By the way I am in no way affiliated with Quickbasic so i'm not just trying to 'pitch' it. Oh yeah, My Personal Fav is ZZT. Okay i deserve this ---> :ot: i'll stop now. :D

I just want to add that if you like Zork and other Infocom games, then you *have* to check out the many free text adventure games, or better known as Interactive Fiction games, that people have made and are available for download on the internet. There is a very active community of people making Interactive Fiction, including some Professors who teach it at prestigious colleges.

I've been checking them out and wow, some people have gotten really creative and have taken Infocom-type games to a new level with great story telling and innovative puzzles. Plus there are extensive materials and tools out there to allow you to create IF games. For a general introduction to Interactive Fiction playing, history and creating, check out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_fiction

I'd recommend playing the top games from the various competitions:
http://www.wurb.com/if/award/1 - the annual rec.arts.int-fiction competition
http://www.wurb.com/if/award/3 - XYZZY Awards - the IF version of the Academy awards

Be sure to also download the various interpreters (the program that plays the IF game file) , so you can actually play the games. If you're on a PC, for Inform/Infocom/Z-code games, I'd recommend WinFrotz. http://www.ifarchive.org/if-archive/infoco...wsFrotz2002.zip
It'll let you play both Inform/Z-code games as well as the original Infocom games.

And for IF games made with TADS, go here http://tads.org/download.htm and find the executable for your Operating System.

Go here to find games:
BAF"s IF guide
http://www.wurb.com/if/

For some recommended authors, check out games made by Graham Nelson, Emily Short, Adam Cadre, Andrew Plotkins and Nick Montfort, as they seem to be some of the elite writers currently making games. Just do a search for them on the BAF's guide. If you lke horror, especially of the Lovecraft variety. Check out Anchorhead:
http://www.wurb.com/if/game/17

And for Zork lovers, check out the "Zorkian" section on BAF's guide:

I do that dance when I'm drunk too.

Oh yeah, Zork is a great game.

At the end of both Zork 1 and Zork 2 on XP, the dos box closes when you complete the final actions. Is there any way to keep it open to see the final text? I've tried using DosBox also, with no luck.

If you create a shortcut to the game, you can specify some options. Right-click, select properties and on the tab 'Program' uncheck 'Close on exit'. This should fix your problem!

Run it in Dosbox and reduce to 4 or so cycles.

Some things to try...

Here's some commands I found that had humorous responses:

* "look at self"
* "hand me to me"
* "kick me", "kick self", "kick" [enter] "self" (they all have slightly different responses)
* "kiss" [any object] (me, tree, ground, etc)
* "stab self" (when you're not carrying the sword; also works with some other objects)
* "damn"
* "ask me"/"talk to self"
* "kill"/"stab" [any object] (case, air, tree, hands, etc)
* "eat me"/"eat self"
* "eat" [any unedible object] (hands, air, etc)
* "go down chimney" (in the white house)
* "scream"/"yell"

I've only just started, but here's what I've got so far :laugh:
Gotta love Zork! :love:

Zork I goes 3D - NWN2 Module

There is a bloke that has put a lot of work into turn Zork I into a Neverwinter Nights 2 Module.

It actually looks really good and I'm looking forward to the release ... assuming I can ever get NWN2 running under Linux again ...

An amusement for IF addicts like yours truly is to enter XYZZY or FROBOZZ into every single game, just to note the response. It is nothing short of stunning to observe how many authors still acknowledge this venerable work.

When you see hundreds of different people reference to a decades-old computer game, ladies and gentlemen, then you will know it is a classic.

Amazingly, there is now an online RPG based on the Zork series. I've tried it myself and highly recommend it.

If you want to try this game out, do yourself a favor and don't use a walkthrough (of for any text adventure game). You'll be cheating yourself out of satisfaction, which is a big part of this game. Patient people only.

Lots of other Interactive Fiction (IF) on the net, free stuff written by fans of the genre and interpreters to play on various OS. Take a look.

I'm stuck! Even with the walkthrough I can't get the trap door back open from down in the cellar. Any Ideas on how to get it back open or do I have to stick something in it?

You're not supposed to get back out that way. If you notice when you first go down into the cellar, someone always shuts the trap door behind you and locks it. You have to find another way out.

Ah Zork, one of my favorite games, and one of the most creative. I usually run it on the high graphics setting (maximum verbosity :max:)

Also, try throwing the leaflet at yourself.

DoctorRyanB1 10-05-2014 11:07 PM

I tried to get into but it really wasn't clicking. I even tried drinking beer before playing, but ended up just seeing how many stupid ways I could kill myself. :palm:

I've not really played very many text adventures before this so many I'm just spoiled on games with graphics and music. I liked King Quest series so typing in what to do didn't bother me. I thought the text was a little bland so it didn't hold my attention really well.

Am I going to gamer hell for not liking this game?????
