Some original character designs and illustrations for you guys. Except for the Starfox one, those are obviously someone else's characters.

Can't see all the images because some of them break up or don't want to load... I can only see about a third of the second one.

Can't see it all but... Is the second pic thought out from me? :max:

Mighty Midget 16-09-2007 05:39 AM

You did those? Wow! Totally wicked! You're a pro or something? You do this for a living?

Ok, I'm impressed :ok: LOL

zafo999 16-09-2007 06:05 AM

Glad you like them. I'm trying to do this for a living, but the people who get paid to do this kind of work are outrageously good at it. So i'm still getting there.

Also, some of the pictures aren't loading for me either. I'm not sure why. I'll try to re-post them from a different source. If not, you can go to www.super-zombie.com and look at them. It's my poorly designed portfolio site.

Mighty Midget 16-09-2007 06:20 AM

I went over there to have a look. Great collection!

Some of the pics did not show, however, like Ackland and Damn Kids. Just thought I'd let you know.

zafo999 16-09-2007 06:48 AM

Ah, thanks. I'm not sure what the deal is with those pictures but I didn't know they weren't loading. I'm not much of a web guy. But I reloaded all the stuff on this thread from a photobucket, so they should work better now.. and should be a little smaller.

Mighty Midget 16-09-2007 07:19 AM

Hmmm, after seeing your gallery, I just wonder if you know this song

Btw: Thanks for putting up those other pics.

I've done some game fan art here and there. And I've done some concept work for a point and click adventure game that never came to be (That's actually where that picture of the astronaut and the picture of the zombie-pilot guy are from). I've also done some work for a game company called Flying Lab on their MMO called Pirates of the Burning Sea.

I've been admiring the work of an artist who calls himself Prometheus. He does a lot of great artwork based directly on classic games, and I've been wanting to do more of that.

And this might count: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...y_faillace.jpg

(Btw XXX games aren't allowed...but not buxom police girls :P)

I think I can come up with something for the competitions. I was also looking through the forums and saw the threads about the Abandoned Times magazine thing. Are you guys still doing that? Because I'd like to get involved in that, too.

Blood-Pigggy 16-09-2007 10:37 PM

Yeah we're still doing that, how about when you join the art department you become a reviewer as well :P

zafo999 17-09-2007 12:33 AM

I haven't done much reviewing, but I'm definitely up for it.

Japo 17-09-2007 01:33 AM

You could work in the graphical part of the magazine, and write reviews or something else if that leaves you enough time. Pigggy will want to enslave you and turn you into a clerk. :P

Quintopotere 17-09-2007 07:33 AM

I'm proud to announce that zafo999 is now officially working for our upcoming magazine! :brain:

So we'll have awesome artworks :ok:

Lulu_Jane 20-09-2007 04:28 AM

Wow.

That boneyard picture reminds me of Nausica And The Valley Of The Wind, which disturbed the hell out of me as a child. That's a great picture.

Or... You could just get your self a 'dot com' or 'dot co dot where-ever you are' and write your own cartoon strips to generate interest.

Add to that a 'Blog' (though I don't mean A Blog 'cause they are rubbish) I was thinking more of a Bio, perhaps.

Then find a link directory, like this one http://www.uklinkexchange.co.uk/ except not for businesses, and build up some links and get the traffic moving to your site. The key here is you need them to come back and that is why I think cartoon strip stories of half-a-dozen frames would be good.

Slap copyright notice over everything and, and...well I get stuck there now I am more used to making a website for work than for pleasure but I am sure you know what I mean.

Oh, and most important of all, I really liked your art, very good it is and I wish I could do that too.

Some practice in 3D. I never finished the texture painting on this and probably never will. But I liked how the face and chest textures came out.

I just moved, so when I get my scanner hooked back up I'll get some recent sketchbook stuff up. Sometimes those are more interesting than finished illustrations.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...lightfinal.jpg

It's supposed to be photorealistic for a school project. Unfortunately, Maya crashed during a render and I hadn't saved for a long-ass time. This was the most recent render of the scene before I lost all my work. The only reason i'm posting it now as a WIP is because i'm too frustrated to pick it back up and rebuild what I lost right now. Any crits would be appreciated, though, as i've got another week before it's due. However, I do realize there's too much heavy reflection going on everywhere. Let me know what parts draw your eye in and any ideas you may have for re-working the composition. I don't really like how it's set up at this point.

Spoonman 05-12-2007 08:50 AM

First of all I think you did a generally good job on this one, very nice! The shapes look well done as so does the rendering, and the use of colors give it something of a.. um.. reddish mistery :P.

I like all the glossiness (personal preference), but it's not quite realistic at some points. The leafs of the plant look ceramic and the marble may be just a little too reflective as welll.
As for the composition: maybe you could try moving the bottles around a bit, mayhaps omitting one (or one of the other objects so you can place a bottle over there). They kinda clutter up right now, almost merging with the pots.

Furthermore I try to make a connection between the glasses, the pencils, two bottles of coke and two pots with plants, failing utterly. What's the story here? :)

zafo999 05-12-2007 12:35 PM

Thanks for the crit! Unfortunately I'm not clever enough to come up with a story. I just took random items out of my library and tried to light them in a way that was interesting. I think i'll add a notepad or something and make it look something like a work desk or something. I don't really have enough time to be modeling anything much fancier than that, unfortunately.

Just a quick character I did today. Also, I found an 'Academic Deficiency' report from the art class I took in high school. At that point, apparently, I didn't take school very seriously.. as I never did any homework, never handed the slip in and had a friend sign it with an obviously fake name.

zafo999 28-02-2008 10:39 PM

Progress on some personal 3D. Just a few more details to model and I can start textures.

Sal 10-03-2008 10:00 PM

Hi Zafo 999.....R.U.S.S. is right your work is good...really good. I personally loved the "reflections" study you did. The tonal quality of this picture is fantastic..As to "story".. art doesn't always have to tell a story sometimes a really good piece of art will speak to us differently each time we look at it....SAL:)

zafo999 17-03-2008 08:05 AM

Thanks for the compliments. I've been slacking, though. Not a whole lot of drawing going on lately.

I was bored this weekend and did up this thing here in photoshop. I didn't draw anything to scan and color here, this is just straight painting from scratch in photoshop... hence the ugly.

Aww I love GIR!

AWESOME artwork, I'm so jealous! I'm especially envious of your eye for musculatures and clothing--that's something I struggle with. I've been trying to get better, but I don't seem to be going anywhere with it...:(
Are you self-taught?

zafo999 22-08-2008 10:01 AM

I started drawing in high school on my own, and right now I'm in an art college(as opposed to a real college). I guess I'm sort of self-taught. I think most artists have to be, just because you've really gotta bust your ass practicing and developing on your own. Nobody else can really make you draw better or paint better or whatever, it's all you! I know dozens of people who have spent tons of cash in art school, attended all the classes, and did all their schoolwork, but just didn't train at all, and they still suck.

I have taken classes and met a lot of brilliant artists, both of which have helped me out and given me great advice. But it really comes down to practicing and opening your mind to art that you may not find interesting... particularly life drawing and anatomy studies. If you want to draw muscle groups and the human body better, find pictures of people or anatomy books (both can be found cheap as free on the internet!) and just try and copy the pictures. Or if you can, find a life drawing class to draw live models. I know it sounds boring to just draw muscle groups out of anatomy books or drawing the wrinkles on someone clothing. But that's what it takes to really learn! And after you get over the first frustrating hump, you'll come to like boring life drawing and you'll be good enough at it to incorporate aspects of it into cartooning or whatever other more fun art stuff you might want to do!

Damn, now I feel like doing some tutorials...

I'd like to check out some of your work, if you'd like some help!

Just started work on a custom arcade-style stick controller that will eventually be compatible with PS1,2,3. Still waiting on some parts to get in.

arete 28-09-2008 10:17 AM

Wow, Zafo, i wouldn't call that a doodle... It's beautiful.

red_avatar 29-09-2008 04:10 PM

Yeah that looks great.

I did a LOT of sketching in highschool but never got that good. Only when I'm basing my drawings on existing designs I can get to that level of quality. Then again my father never really tried to develop my talent - I wanted to go to art school (which was every wednesday afternoon and saturdays) since I was 10 but I wasn't allowed to. I'm good at drawing Belgian style comics but it's the really detailed designs I'd love to be good at.

zafo999 29-09-2008 06:27 PM

Interesting, could you give me some examples of Belgian-style comics? I'm not familiar with any Belgian comics I don't think.

There's tons:

The Smurfs
Suske & Wiske (also known as Bob & Bobbette and a million other names)
Tin Tin (or Kuifje in Dutch)
Robbedoes (or Spirou)
Lucky Luke
Brav
o
Guuist Flater (Gaston Lagaffe)
Buck Danny
Biebel
Kiekeboe
Bakelandt (which is one of the few popular comics which goes beyond rather simplistic drawings)
Rode Ridder (another exception)

arlesya 05-10-2008 11:50 PM

Oh, man... Tintin is just awesome! I was crazy about it when I was a kid. My mom even used to call me "little miss Haddock" because I was often in that "Captain Haddock mood".

arete 06-10-2008 03:27 AM

Billions of blue blistering barnacles! I particularly liked the treasure hunt with the model ship, and the Castefiore emerald... Now that's a happy childhood memory :3:

red_avatar 06-10-2008 03:40 AM

In Dutch it was: Duizend Bommen & Granaten! (a thousand bombs & grenades). It's amazing how old the comic is though - the album where they were going to the moon was years before the actual Apollo project.

Snowy? O_o Well... we call it "Milu" without the "o".

What about the detectives? We call them "Dupont" and "Dupond". And English is Thomson and Thompson, right? But is the pronounciation the same?

I guess we keep most of the original names from French works. Even with the characters from "Asterix and Obelix".

dosraider 09-10-2008 10:23 PM

In French 'Dupont' and Dupond' are pronounced the same, yes.
English ones, don't know really, my spoken English isn't that good -As if my written English was good ..... -

arlesya 09-10-2008 10:28 PM

Just saw a list of the names in various languages in Wikipedia. Some are very funny.
I really like those detectives.

Spoonman 09-10-2008 10:32 PM

I like the dutch version Jansen en Janssen (it's a common last name in the netherlands, so it feels natural to us, hence it's a good translation.).

Hey Zafo,

That is some kick ass artwork!
Have you ever done anything with integral backgrounds?
I've got something you might be interested in - the picture on the first page:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...y_faillace.jpg
Is really nice. I think it'd work well for one of the Flash games I'd like to make with Pandaaa.

Just simple ones like space invaders, arkanoid and puzzle games like tanzen.
Tanzen's a puzzle game, played with blocks of wood - the aim is to take patterned, variously sized shapes and fit them into one larger, specific shape. But, there are many ways it could fit in, but only one correct way.

I reckon that you piece Stretch Bones would be great as the reveal picture prize in breakout or arkanoid.
It's got that really good pointed feel to it, with diagonals to mix with the level blocks - the angle is just right for that game. And some other puzzle ones.

Have you ever seen the dissectional website?
http://www.dissectional.com
It was made for the band Tool ages ago - you start it by clicking on the flickering bit at the bottom.

Some cool background and a good shaped patterned or intricate image overlaid, to be rearranged into the correct form.
I reckon that'd be a good art game to work on.

I'm well up for doing some flash games with Claire - she stencils a lot, like graffitti and I am just shite. So we were going to try to do the art ourselves.
But after seeing your stuff, our's looks pretty lame!

Would you ever be up for working on the art for flash games? You could help direct the animation as well. Artists always have different ideas to other artists but often end up expressing the same universal principle.

Take it easy,
Pete

I thought this thread was gonna be about how you wasted your life playing games, which I can relate to. I wouldn't call having artistic talent and using it a waste of life.

Heh, probably. I draw a lot of inspiration from games as far as character design. I like the military/police-styled characters from games like Resident Evil and Metal Gear. Plus anything Masamune Shirow ever did. So it probably shows to some degree.

Thank you. I have tried to dabble with Flash games but I am horrible at programming. I wouldn't mind checking out some projects if you have some. Not sure if I'd be able to devote a whole lot of time right now, though. Although, you're more than welcome to use any of my stuff for your games if you want. If you start a thread or whatever for your projects just link me up or PM me or whatever. :)
