hehe I have a later version of this. search for SPWAW. its only a few hundred megabytes...

Makabi 07-12-2004 11:55 PM

aye, SPWAW is the best TBS I've ever played.

just to help those interested in it, http://www.steelpanthersworldatwar.com/main.asp

Only 425Mb but runs under all Win OS's. Not sure about other OS's. Matrix Games has permission to tweak the code and distribute but can't sell it. So instead the make and sell "Mega Campaign" add-ons. Matrix and the SP community has put a lot of work into this game and it's still being updated. If you can handle the download this the version to get.

so is this something like steel panthers or what?!

Danny252 10-12-2004 07:50 PM

its a later version.
Steel Panthers:world at War
the only TBS game I ever could like.
only cause I got beat my enemy with 400 tanks and a few flame-rocket launchers.

einherjar 14-12-2004 01:50 AM

Any idea where I could find the manual for SP:WaW? The tutorial missions instruct you to use the manual while playing them, but the game didn't come with a manual, and I can't find one via google.

Makabi 21-12-2004 12:08 AM

have you tried searching through SP:WAW's folder? you should be able to find the manual there. :)

einherjar 21-12-2004 01:50 AM

I don't see one. I might consider downloading it from another source.

NOTE: I've been having some trouble running the sound in Dosbox, but it works under a true DOS enviroment.
Did you run the sound setup program? I did, and the sound now works in DOSbox.

cheesegrater 14-01-2005 03:28 AM

The WWIII campaign doesn't seem to work.

cheesegrater 16-01-2005 03:58 AM

The scenarios don't seem to work. Am I the only one playing this game??! Yet, you guys play Tiberium Dawn? Unlike C&C this is a REAL strategy game. Oh no! I better duck and cover now.

I am talking about Steel Panthers 1.21 not World At War. I only have a 6 gig hard drive. :D

laiocfar 12-11-2005 05:37 PM

Just a question got the normal campaing any sort of end?

Panzer General 06-12-2005 10:16 PM

Hi.

I´m playing this great game , but I can`t find a manual. How can I change my core units once I´ve started a campaing?. I only have to work whit the initial core units and some support ?

I think I`m loosing a lot of possibilities in this game , so I`ll apreciate if someone can give me a hand.

laiocfar 07-12-2005 12:31 PM

At the end of each battle in the campaing u got the option of fix your units or change them. Anyway, u can not change from infantry to tanks ;)

panzer gen 07-12-2005 10:51 PM

Yep. that`s what I wanted to do :wall: ... Change the type of units not just upgrade them. :sniper:

I found the original manual of the game fully scanned here
http://jlvignaud.free.fr/sp/sp1/

It`s a shame that you can only have a few units as core army :not_ok: . Wonder why they didn`t make it like PANZER GENERAL where the number of core unit can be increased and upgraded during the campaing.

laiocfar 08-12-2005 02:30 PM

They wanted to maintain your army at the size of a div + or -. I found also that panzer general is more experience based.

Guest 08-12-2005 10:38 PM

Yes, is a more experience based game . The problem is that you don`t have too many choices , the scenarios are too small and the enemy will see you very soon.

Anyway is a good game.

Strategy games are the ones I like most

age of empires is too easy.

C&C a disaster very boring.

Ascendacy Pretty good.

Jordan 08-12-2005 10:47 PM

I give this game a 3/5...

Well if the three that u like more, u say that ine is a disater the other is boring what do u let for the games that u didn´t like?

I agree that C&C and age with warcraft III, age of titans and cossacks only serves to multyplay

panzer 11-12-2005 08:54 PM

I know ... I know. I was in a negative day :ranting: .

The C&C I played was "red alert"
The problem of the game is that the difficulty is set only at the begginig of each scenario , theres a point where the computer can`t defeat you , so all you have to do is kill ALL enemy units to end the mission ( can take you a long time but there`s no challenge ). A similar thing happens to age of empires.

C&C is one of the few games I never played again. :not_ok:

Other genre I like is adventure. I played "the curse of monkey island" in an old XT PC with an hercules monitor and no HD , just the floppy drive ( game divided in 12 disks ) Does anyone remember when you have to dissolve the jail lock with grog ? From the tabern to the jail had to make like 5 disk changes  ... If that`s not perseverance.........

Guest 11-04-2006 11:29 PM

At long last! I'd been looking for a good turn based World War 2 game. Finally I've found one that has all the tactical complexity of battalion command, I was getting tired of the divisional "use unit A against unit B to win" gameplay.

laiocfar 12-04-2006 04:06 AM

I most "different" thing of the gameplay of steel panthers is the smoke, i never find my mens so digged in the clouds as in this game. Close combat is some like steel panthers, u should try it, there was a version in HOTU... unlucky i didnt downloaded it and now hotu was gone

Avelardo 12-11-2006 02:32 AM

Having trouble getting SP to run, but I'm rather computer illiterate, so I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting. I'm pretty sure I've got the memory for it, since my HD still has more than half its available memory left.

laiocfar 12-11-2006 07:26 AM

I dont play it from sometime but i can tell you that the game isnt an easy going one, you need dosbox, pure dos or say some magical words when executing it.

Avelardo 12-11-2006 07:29 PM

Well crap...

So I should probably just try some other game?

Mighty Midget 13-11-2006 11:24 AM

@The Fourth: Just a note. The later SPs were released as freeware, and they run under windows. You could go for one of those.

Avelardo 13-11-2006 12:19 PM

If you mean this site:

You could try SPCamo Workshop http://linetap.com/www/drg/SPCamo-4.htm

Avelardo 13-11-2006 02:45 PM

Yes, I could try that.

*kicks self*

anthsco 27-11-2006 03:21 AM

:ok:

I play every version of steel panthers not only on my desktop at home but also on my laptop. You can only imagine those long bus or subway rides where I end up having an audience of mostly children who are always interested in getting their mitts on the game!

I work with the Marines as a graphic designer and have allowed the gunny (a senior NCO in charge of the office) to organize a network game with the other recruiters and even with the Army guys next door! :brain:

You can only imagine the wanna-be Genghis Khans coming in and getting their butts handed to them by people who have actually been there, done that, got the medal thank you. :titan: :sneaky:

I have almost all known scenario packs, campaign packs, and even various editors for all versions of the game. There is a Polish site that has some righteous add-ons for Steel Panthers and they seem to work even with the newer Windows-based incarnations of the game.

Polish Steel Panthers Upgrade Page :w00t: :ok:

Most of all I enjoy playing this game that, like Starflight and Masters of Orion, has never lost it's playability.

Play on, fellow gamers, play on!!! :ok: :w00t:

I never liked SPWAW that much because of the strange user interface. Try winSPWW2 (1930-1946) or the modern variant winSPMBT (1949-2020) both free to download.

i don't think so, it's pretty on topic

Claire UK 16-10-2010 10:26 AM

SP3 manual?

Is there a downloadable manual?

What does the message mean 'needs 1/2 orders' before the game will allow a unit to move

For choppers what is the differance between flight levals

Running SP1 and II on Win 7

I've found that using the utility D-Fend to manage DosBox allows me to run Steel Panthers and Steel Panthers II easily on Windows 7 x64 i7 processor. Tried for years to get them running smoothly with other utilities, but everything works well. Allows the mouse speed and CPU speeds to be adjusted down to make the game run at a normal speed.
