Finally an adventure game. I love this games.

Elaslay 09-12-2004 09:35 PM

This game doesn't work I've tried running it but it wont start.

wendymaree 09-12-2004 09:57 PM

The problem with this game is that the first few screens take a lonnnnng time to start. Just wait a few moments and they'll initialise. :ok:

How long? Cause ive been here a while.

wendymaree 09-12-2004 11:12 PM

Did you read the review where it says that you need to extract the game to a folder called c:\daughter and if you use XP that it needs to be mounted in dosbox. :) I know naught about dosbox as I have Windows 98se. I had to use pure Dos for it to work. The game wouldn't work in Windows 98se.

Kosta 09-12-2004 11:50 PM

You need to do either one of these two things to get it started properly:

1. Extract the game to C:\DAUGHTER, and run it with "serpent" from there.

2. Extract it anywhere (let's take D:\oldgames\daughter as an example). Start up dosbox and enter "mount c D:\oldgames\", then write "cd daughter" and run the game with serpent. The important thing is that the game always thinks its in C:\DAUGHTER directory. Stupid, but that's the way it has to be

Elaslay 10-12-2004 06:45 PM

Ok I got it! but does anyone know how to control the game. Like opening the letter, saving the game, ect.

The control interface does seem a little awkward. You need to right-click through conversations, and left click on highlighted phrases to do stuff (like saying yes or no)

You can go to your inventory by clicking the bottom of the screen, and you can read the letter there by double clicking it, I think. There's also a map so you can travel round the city and a diary that tells you what you should be doing. Apart from that, you're on your own!

Fawfulhasfury 11-12-2004 12:00 AM

Sounds tedious.

wendymaree 11-12-2004 12:10 AM

Once you become accostumed to the interface, it's ok, if you don't mind a little clicking around. There's also a book at the top of the control/interface page which has realms of information about Egyptian gods and goddesses. To open the letter you can either drop it on the 'ground' and read it there, or open it in the inventory which you reach by right clicking the object, I think.

EDIT:
Just went into the game again to refresh the memory. The way to drop the letter on ground and read it is by left clicking the letter in the left hand bottom corner. If you want to take the letter into the inventory and read it, then you left click the letter on the bottom right hand corner.

Elaslay 11-12-2004 12:10 AM

Still can't open that stupid Letter!!!!!! :ranting:

wendymaree 11-12-2004 12:12 AM

Got in a moment before you posted, Elaslay. Read my reply before yours. It should work.

Elaslay 11-12-2004 01:23 AM

Do you know how to save the game?

wendymaree 11-12-2004 01:32 AM

You put your mouse down the bottom on the right hand side and a scrolling paper icon will appear. You left click on this and you will then be taken into the inventory and control page. You click on a book that is one from the bottom called something like 'Cooks Tours' and it will open. At the bottom of the page facing you are a list of options. The option at the bottom called Your Journey Options or something similiar is the one u click to be taken to the page where you can save, load exit, etc.

Salome 11-12-2004 08:33 AM

Oooh I've been looking for this game so long! Thanks <3

Elaslay 11-12-2004 08:01 PM

Pipe and powder?!?!?!?!? How do I get those things in the next room? *Sigh*

wendymaree 11-12-2004 09:37 PM

Hi, again :)

I don't want to say here as it might spoil it for others. There aren't a lot of puzzles in this game and this is one of the few crucial ones. There's a walkthrough you can download on the review page. Or if you're really stuck, I can pm you with the answers.

Grace 15-12-2004 07:43 AM

:help: can somebody pleeeaase tell me how i am supposed to give the letter of credit to the greek woman?? i tried putting it down next to her hand but that does not seem to work...

wendymaree 15-12-2004 08:33 AM

Hi Grace, welcome to Abandonia :)

I remember that I kept clicking the letter ON her and it finally disappeared and the game proceeded.

Jim6 13-03-2005 02:23 AM

I'm absolutely amazed by this website - it's a near-perfect collection of games!

A note on "Daughter of Serpents" though; it's heavily Lovecraft-inspired, something that should be mentioned in the review. Also, the game is incredibly linear - there are ~6 paths through the game, but you are stuck on one of them from the start (if you pick a character, you have one, and it randomly picks one for a created character) Other than that, the game is quite short - I'd personally tone down the review a bit, and link it to "Shadow of the Comet", which is a far better effort in the same vein.

wendymaree 13-03-2005 03:14 AM

Hi, Jim6. Thanks for the advice on the review and compliment for the site You really seem to know your DOS games. Why don't you register and review some for us? We'd love to have you onboard :)

Edit:
I see in another part of the site you have registered. Welcome! I've now linked the game to Shadow Of The Comet.

The Hero 19-03-2005 07:45 PM

i still cant get it to work
:help:

Lil One 11-04-2005 10:26 AM

Hey there, just discovered this game, and it looks like fun. Mystery a la Lovecraft in the 1920's Egypt, niiice! :w00t:

Anyway, how to read that letter (took me a couple of tries) :

Pick it up, and either from your inventory (reaching it by going to the lower right hand screen and left-clicking) or from the "game screen", just move it down to the lower left hand corner and left-click.

And there you go! :ok:

Guest 15-04-2005 12:35 PM

My computer for some strange reason won't let me even create a character! Why?

Guest 25-04-2005 11:01 AM

I noticed you have to run the program called run.com in order to get the chance to create a character. Otherwise it will simply dump you into the game with some default character.

If you use run.com you will also see the introduction. :D

FFX2player 07-05-2005 03:37 AM

:help: This may be a SPOILER, so be forewarned

I get the pipe and the powder. I can not get the powder in the pipe. The lady gave me the pipe and the powder back, and I know what I have to do thanks to the walkthru, but I can't get it to work. E-mail me if wish, at **************@*******.***, though I'll check the board too.

!!!THANKS!!! :ok:

A. J. Raffles 22-05-2005 11:28 AM

Hmm, is it just me or does the game always freeze when you do something stupid and get yourself killed?

Other than that it seems to be a very nice game, though. :ok:

A. J. Raffles 23-05-2005 10:16 AM

OK, it is a nice game, but why does it have to be so incredibly short? What sort of adventure game can be finished in fifteen minutes?
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, anyway...

Guest_DOSGameFan 21-06-2005 09:11 AM

I get a dialog loop problem at the point after you use the lens of Thoth or whever it's called. My character tells Ariadne about what happens, and she begins talking about an Efreet... and then my characters talks about Efreets...and then she talks about Efreets...and my chracters talks about Efreets...

Over and over and over. There is no option to select in the conversations themselves, and no way to end the cycle. I can't even select the save/load screen. What am I doing wrong??

IMissDOS 21-06-2005 08:29 PM

Thought I would repost this now that I've joined:

Rane 19-12-2005 11:25 PM

am i the only one who was able to die in this game??? when i went down the cellar n climbed down that hole in the ground all i got was"haunter of darkness" and i got thrown to main menu :tai: :ranting:

Mezza 01-02-2006 07:38 PM

Well Rane, I also managed to die. Took the same dive in the same pit

@IMissDos (and many others) The controls are very awkward indeed, I just clicked around the screens and inventory to see what happens. Especially the edges of the screen! In Cook's Book click on the last line ("Essentials for your visit") to get to the options menu (load/save/etc.)

At a certain point in the game I took a leap forward and was able to use inventory items I never got???? This bug made the game even shorter  Well I'm just going to replay it with another caracter and see if it happens again.

For enthusiasts of this game's theme I can recommend Laura Bow - The dagger of Amon Ra.

sourlimes 20-02-2006 12:40 AM

Hey, so does anyone else have the problem where you cant open the map (the screen just goes blank?)

Thanks!

Heh, yeah, that happened to me too.

Would you mind using the "EDIT" button next time round instead of triple-posting? Thank you.

Right, sorry.

jeppe93 15-05-2006 11:58 AM

Does anyones know a game thats alot like this, ive gotten tired of this one...
but i love the theme, and the character creation...
if anyones know one plz tell me about it... especially if its an abandonware game...

The Fifth Horseman 15-05-2006 12:11 PM

Hound of Shadow has nearly the same creation system, and AFAIK a similar theme too.

jeppe93 20-05-2006 09:47 AM

Do you know if its abandonware?

The Fifth Horseman 24-05-2006 01:39 PM

I'd guess so.
HOTU had it, if I remember right.
But it's a text-based adventure.

Geezer 05-04-2008 01:19 AM

This game was also released under the name "The Scroll". The copy that I have of The Scroll is on CD but I suspect the controls are the same. I can scan the manual since so many people have had trouble figuring the game out. I was wondering if someone who has actually played Daughter of Serpents can read the manual before I submit it to make sure that it applies and they have not changed the controls on the CD version.

EDIT: I just noticed that they have branded this game as a No Go. Why? I haven't seen this game sold on the market in years. There is ONE copy for sale on Amazon that is listed as new but I'll bet it is from someone's private collection.

There are several games that are not available to buy, but you still cannot download them. The Monkey Island games, and Sink Or Swim being examples. :)

Yes, I know but that is because the publisher is enforcing copyrights themselves. In the case of this game the publisher is Millennium Interactive Ltd. and Abandonia has many games on site by them (many of which are newer) that are all downloadable. Maybe it is the producer
Eldritch Games that is the problem?

ffxplayer 01-09-2008 04:54 AM

>:O

Excuse me, could someone help me with the whole "pipe/powder" puzzle? Yes, I have them both, yes, I know to put powder in pipe to blow at spirit(or dijini or whatever)but when I give the powder and pipe to the woman, she only gives me the powder AND WON'T RETURN THE PIPE. I've been trying for an hour, someone walk me through this in baby steps PLEASE. I WANT spoilers at this point, you can PM, that's fine, just H-E-L-P!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yigenek 11-02-2009 07:28 AM

One of the few official Lovecraft games, but a mediocre one, i think the best part is the character creation section that is absent in "The Scroll" version.

I have a question to ask, when i run the floppy "Daugher" version under dosbox there a lot of graphic errors in the game and after a point it locks. But i didn't have any problem with the CD "Scroll" version. What would be the cause of this?

The Fifth Horseman 11-02-2009 03:27 PM

I'm guessing the copy of floppy version of "Daughter..." you've got has been corrupted somehow.

Sal 24-02-2009 10:10 PM

Ok..I have gotten the game up and running..created my character watched the intro..gone to the hotel..read the letter and gone across the road to Cooks but when I try to get the clerk to help me..No go..I can't seem to find a coin in the inventory..Have I missed something?

Sal 26-02-2009 08:59 PM

Hello....Can anyone tell me where to find the coin to pay the man at Cook's?:(

Sal 28-02-2009 04:25 AM

Sound problems

Does anyone else (using DOSBox 0.72, Ubuntu Linux 8.04) have trouble with no sound? I get to the Options screen and there is a sound option, but clicking on the left (showing a speaker, presumably sound on) or the right (x-ed out speaker, presumably sound off) does nothing in either case.... and I get no sound at all. I tried different configs with soundblaster options in DOSBox to no avail. Thanks to anyone....

Kvnt 28-02-2009 06:16 PM

Lovely!

Great game, great game!
I've not gotten too far yet, but I'm hooked, and in love.
Adventure/RPG ftw.

:3:Finished the game as the character I created..Great graphics but the game was SHORT...I am going to play it again as a different character to see what happens..At the moment I feel the game just did not live up to its potential. Did not have the atmosphere and scariness of "Shadow of the comet"

plutonick 09-03-2009 08:12 PM

This game is driving me nuts.

I am playing 'the scroll' version. And I am reading the second letter. It's pretty obvious there is a second page but I don't know how to 'go to 2nd page'..

This interface is crazy.

EDIT: Ok, the critical spot was a tiny pixel on the bottom right edge of the letter.. argh.,

plutonick 09-03-2009 09:35 PM

wow, this has to be the shortest game i've played. It was even shorter than Heart of China. I managed to finish it between my two posts here

Capo 10-03-2009 05:36 PM

Is THAT short ? :mhh:

plutonick 10-03-2009 07:21 PM

Playing the 'scroll' version as an egyptiologist, yes it!

I only encountered 1 [one] puzzle!

Kissaki 26-05-2009 10:10 AM

Possible spoilers here...

This game had such potential. When I created my character, I looked at the myriad of different skills and thought, "this game is BIG", and I assumed that I would get to develop those skills as the game progressed. Alas, I couldn't even access my stats once I started playing, but I soon discovered that the stats aren't actually used for anything anyway. They just make your character add some informative comments here and there whenever a topic is discussed which is covered by his talents, which do not actually contribute to anything.

I think this game was originally meant to be very long, as the skill system and map feature indicate. I have only played through once, but I only got one map-update (the police station). Normally a game with maps of this kind will have many map updates, giving you more locations to visit as you progress (a la Gabriel Knight). And with all the research put into the game (the extensive notes in your inventory, for example) this feels like a game that had great ambitions, but failed to follow through.

I did enjoy it while it lasted, but unfortunately it didn't last.

Picking a different set of skills vastly alters the way the game plays out. Having said that... it is ridiculously short.

Try playing it specialising in just one skill tree. And then a different skill tree.

Choosing a different set of skills will vastly alter the opportunities open to you. I'm not sure how many different possible story lines there are, but I suspect the separate graphics for each of them are the main reason the game is so short. Don't get me wrong, the general plot is still the same, but, e.g., my first play-through had almost nothing in common with the walkthroughs.

I never got *any* map updates! Past a certain point, the game turned into a train speeding to its conclusion, with nothing I could do to stop it (even dying didn't work, heh... though I suspect that was a bug). Choosing nothing still progressed the plot... which I didn't mind too much, because I failed to grab the powder, and dropped the lens.

Yeah, the same thing happens to me! Does someone knows how to solve this?
To use the powder and the pipe is easy. Just put both the jar and the pipe on the floor (upclose), open the jar and operate the pipe to fill it. Then in next screen with the pit, just use the pipe on the middle of the pit and voila, there's your efrreti and just pass around it.
But, please help me the dialogue loop! Thanks

punkassbitch 17-05-2010 08:41 PM

I install the game to C:\Daughter and load it in dosbox. The screen goes black and then crashes back to my desktop.

DarthHelmet86 18-05-2010 02:55 AM

Are you mounting your C:\ drive in DosBox or the folder Daughter?

brodhisattva 27-02-2011 12:45 AM

lovecraft in games

I wasd excited when I started playing this and realized the lovecraftian aspects to it - which made me think - how many games out there are influenced by lovecraft?

I thought of a few - besides this one...
Call of cthulhu - the shadow of the comet (haven't played yet, but DLed)
Darkseed has some elements...
Dylan Dog - through the looking glass
And, curiously enough, Quest for Glory IV

Any I am missing or should know about?

The Fifth Horseman 27-02-2011 09:18 AM

Yes. http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/h-p-lovecraft-games

virumor 17-01-2012 07:44 PM

I, too, ran in the dialogue loop bug with Ariadne (which I assume is just before the game ends). Several reloads/restarts didn't solve it.

A pity, considering it's a pretty interesting (but short!) little game.

I beleive, it set sound automatically. If it found MT32, you'll get it, otherwise it's SB.
