Top 5 Games
Inspired by Side Meier's Top 5 games on msnbc, I thought I would make a top 5 of my own (and perhaps encourage others to do the same...):
1. Civilization IV 2. Super Mario World 3. Football Manager 2008 4. World of Warcraft 5. Monkey Island 2 Bubblers: StarCraft, Diablo II, Monkey Island 3, Grim Fandango, Championship Manager 95/96, Super Mario Bros 3, Premier Manager 97, Sensible Soccer, Bubble Bobble aaaaaaand Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Civilization |
1. GTA series (no special one)
2. Realms of Arkania 1 3. Fallout 2 4. Bard's Tale series 5. A-Train (DOS) As longer as I think about it this list keeps changing so I just wrote down a snapshot of my mind. |
1. Portal
2. Chrono Trigger 3. EVE Online 4. Forza 2 5. X3 |
1. Transport Tycoon Deluxe for Windows. This ought to be the game I wasted the most time playing in my entire life and got the best fun out of it in the process. And I still do from time to time...
2. Ufo: Ennemy Unknown. Same than TTD, but come second. All other sequels are pretty much clones of this game. 3. Master of Orion. Pretty much a Civilization clone, but in space. Pretty much spawned the whole 4X genre. 4. Civilization. The best of the Civilization series with eyes closed and a hand tied in the back, all other games of the same genre are clones of this game. This unfortunately include Colonization and Master of Magic, which would also otherwise get their entry on this hall of fame. 5. MechCommander. Even though it has a very closed story and extremely linear gameplay, I have played this game from start to conclusion so many times that I lost count. It probably number easily around the 20. Honorable mention: 6. Starcraft. Without it's expention, of course, simply the best RTS ever made. Coma. 'nuff said. 7. Original War. One of the best strategy game I ever played. I just can't believe it's so underrated and such an unknown game. Hardcore strategy game players: wake up if you never played that game! 8. Fallout. Incredible RPG, too bad the replayability is so low. It would be higher on my list if so. 9. Chrono Trigger (SNES). Too bad it's a SNES console game, otherwise it would have been higher in my list too. It's without the shadow of a doubt the best SNES RPG ever made, overshadowing Final Fantasy III (and especially FF7) easily. |
I would really like some more replies. Is there already a post like this since noone is replying? If this is the case - where? If this is isn't the case - gief me some answers please - I crave inspiration!

Far too tough to pick out 5 games... I could give you my 5 fave adventure games, my 5 fave sim/management games, my 5 fave SNES games etc. etc. but best 5 overall?? Every time I put it at 5 I miss out some that should be mentioned...
This is also why I cant say what my favourite films of all time are. |
«PC»
1. Doom (1 & 2) 2. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis 3. Day of the Tentacle 4. Duke Nukem 3D 5. Wolfenstein 3D |
I don't like the entire "X top games of Y". it doesn't work well. Do we count console games? PC? Arcades? Board games FFS?You can't really make top 5, because your tastes will change - you may like this game more than that one today, and differently tommorow.

Why, for that matter, is it so much easier making genre- or platform-specific top 5's? You are faced with the same tough choices and you would surely feel that you would be leaving out a lot this way as well. Is it because it is easier to compare within the confines of one genre or platform? This argument doesn't hold in my opinion. If you make a top 5 SNES Games you are faced with choosing between games from many genres and if you make a top 5 simulation games you will have to choose between games from different platforms. In other words - choosing between games from different genres and platforms is possible according to the view that you defend. Making an overall top 5 is the same on a larger scale - and hence much more fun. (And why in the world can't you make a movie top 5? I always have mine at the ready) Quote:
As for which game platforms to include - it's entirely up to you. However as it is an overall top 5, I would think it obvious to at least include consoles (and probably arcade games as well). I don't know why you would want to include board games - but if you want to - knock yourself out. |
My 5 favourities are
1)Monkey island 1 2)Maniac mansion 3)Never winter nights 2 4)Halo 5)Ultima underworld-the stygian abyss |
Ah, now you made me look at my terribly long list of all the games I ever played (and remembered)... It does indeed require some very tough decisions, but here's my attempt:
1. Heroes of Might and Magic (3, then 2, then the rest). Awesome game - played it and all the expansions again and again for years, both campaigns, one-off maps and multiplayer. 2. Civilization 2/3/4 - being close to god just rocks! 3. Guess I have to say the Command & Conquer genre - all the way from Dune 2, through the first C&C, Red Alert to Generals Zero Hour. Along with the warcraft series, this series the bar I reckon. Played them all. 4. Little Big Adventure 2 (1 was save game bugged). Fun, compelling, cute and imaginative - great action/adventure game. 5. North & South - many fond memories of childhood multiplayer games in this one :) - excellent replayability vs. humans. Runners-up... 6. Ecstatica 1/2- unique and very atmospheric/eerie. 7. World of Warcraft - it did steal roughly 2400 hours of my time... 8. Max Payne 1/2 - with it's original slow-mo bullet time action and nice film noir setting, I'd have to say it's been the most interesting Shoot-em up I can recall. 9. Warhammer - Dark Omen. Perhaps not the greatest game, but as a warhammer player it provided me with the opportunity to see my miniature toy soldiers come to life ;) 10. Far Cry - I personally loved the beautiful graphics and nonlinear 'walkthrough'. 11. Star Wars Pod Racer - Awesome speed!! (with the best racers in late game) - nice graphics and atmosphere too. ... + praise to those forgotten here! (Only naming 5 is clearly not possible;)) |
Hey, where's my avatar? - I did upload a properly sized picture:P

Ooooh...
There are so many games that are good so its really hard, atleast for me, to rank them. Its a bit like saying, whos the better musician without specifying which genre you're talking about :) But anywho, here is my list of top 5 games in no specific order: Civilization 1 & 2 (I really hate 3 & 4) Any Sierra adventure game (I pretty much love them all the same so its really hard to pick out a specific game) Tie Fighter (X-wing was good, but Tie Fighter took the game to a whole new level and you got to play as bad guy :) Half-Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, HL2 Episode 2 Might and Magic 3 (This was the first M&M game I ever played and even tho I liked 4 & 5 they never came near 3 imo) There are alot more games I could list, but with only mentioning 5 these are the ones that stands out the most. |
1.- Warcraft III
2.- Metal Gear Solid 3.- Tales of phantasia. 4.- Final Fantasy IV 5.- System Shock II Easy :D |
Top 5:
1. GTR2 2. rFactor 3. GeneRally (I LOVE this freeware gem) 4. Burnout 3: Takedown 5. Warcraft 3 - FT honorable mention: 6. TES IV - Oblivion (only if it wouldn't crash >.<) 7. Doom Series 8. NBA Live 08 9. Soldat 10. Heroes of Might and Magic III 11. The Sims |
Mine would be: (It'll change every few months)
1. Zombie Panic! Source 2. Loom 3. Garry's Mod 9 4. SourceForts 5. Company of Heroes |
I'm not great with these and I have a habit of changing my mind frequently but my top five would look something like this:
1)Shadowrun 2)Super Metroid 3)Super Mario Bros. 3 4)Super Mario Kart 5)Goldeneye I know, four SNES games but the SNES ruled. :) |

Let me add my list that's going to change in 10 days!

1 rastan the master system version damn how fun was the game, what a shame you cant play that game with an emulator if you only have the keyboard because you need tha diagonal button from the pad the cursors up and down somehow dont work for the high jumps lol you couldnt play it even on master system without the original sega controller...
you guys really have this game a try the endbosses of the levels were so awesome like centaur with a sword or dragon and allways a princess.... 2 shinobi master system and arcade version 3 civilization the first part as before mentioned is the definite best of all games of that genre, not only were the other clones no game was so fun as that, man even the music was awesome can someone remember the music at the beginning when you see the birth of our world in the intro damn i loved that music it really gets me thinking so nice, i cant remember now but i think it was somehow mysterious 4mach rider this game is pretty fun.. somehow i cant get it running on pc if anyone can get a working version post it please... this game really rocks!! actually this game is from a genre i usually dislike put this game is just perfectly made the music is love it or hate it but it stimulates the action and the game is pretty addicting 5gun smoke and doom 1 +2 both were awesome and ground breaking... lol ninjas in a western game how awesome was that... but thats only a short list many so good games i cant rememer the names, there are i guess at least 5 really cool games in the arcade i cant remember and over 100 amiga and pc games i have forgotten..... not to mention mega drive, snes, nes and master system titles.... man i just wished the gameplay of the immortal would have been better, than i would have been a top 5 or they would have made the story better of shadowrun mega drive version and dropped that cyber levels, damn how cool was that dark atmosphere and the idea with the big corporation and those thugs who work as slave controlling everything for the guys with the big pockets how cool how realistic lol i really thing thats were the world is going... and not to mention rings of medusa wich would have been a jewel if had been produced by better programmers and better thought through |
Best Games

my 5
heroes 2&3
fallout 1&2 m.a.x starcraft master of orion 1&2 not in order |
This is going to be tough, but I'll give it a try.
1. Fallout 1 & 2 Both are excellent CRPGs with perfect pre-rendered graphics. I love the way how you could play the game with millions of different characters and still complete the game. When you pump the difficulty setups to the max, you can really see that the post-apocalyptic wasteland IS a dangerous place to be. 2. UFO - Enemy Unknown & X-Com 2 - Terror from the Deep These both games are great examples of how you can combine strategic management and squad-based tactical gameplay into a nice package. The atmosphere in these games is just stunning. The music brings a lot to these games. 3. Tie Fighter Ok, I admit it, I'm a Star Wars fan. This has to be one of the best games I have ever played. The gameplay is astonishing! Everything works just like it should. I never liked the Rebellion anyway, so flying a Twin Ion Engine Fighter and shooting down X-wings is the thing for me. :amused: 4. Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 / The Secret of Monkey Island series One word. Hilarious. I've been laughing my ass off, thanks to Simon, Guybrush and the rest. 5. Thief: The Dark Project, Thief 2: The Metal Age & Thief - The Deadly Shadows The best of all first person sneakers. I have completed every game like a hundred times with different approaches. Garrett is probably one of the coolest guys in the gaming world. Of course, there are other excellent games as well, but these are the ones that have really made my day. |
Listing games i don't play anymore would be pointless as if they were that good, i would continue to play them, great games supposed to never die, so the top 5 of my games are games are continue to have installed and play regularly :
in no particular order : -Heroes of Might and Magic 3 With the expansions, i have played it for years and while i don't play the campaigns anymore, the thousand of scenarios and the random generator keep me busy enough. Always a great fun, never felt the need to get another newer version as this one never got old for me. There is an user-made mod that add more troops and castles named Wake of the Gods that seems now to be abandonned, but some people are developping an expansion for it named Horn of the Abyss Here is the main board of everything related to the serie -winSP:MBT In the old times i played often the dos version of SP:MBT, i just like this wargame a very lot, covering so many year span with so many equipment and countries that for TBS wargamer, this can't get better. When the window version appeared i was a very lot more happy, with a more modern OS, there is no more need of DOSBox and some periodical slowdown problems linked to it and the game got then a new place on my hard drive. I don't see it being removed in the future, so much with scenario, campaigns or generated battles that i doubt i will need a new TBS wargame for years. And it is always supported with 1 or 2 patches by years. You can get the free version of WinSP:MBT here and buy the CD version that features some bonus on the same website. -Master of Orion 1&2 I can't get them separated, as i can't choose between those 2, being both very good and so different from each other that there is similar feel between thme. Not only the gameplay is completely different between MoO1 and MOo2 , ensuring that none of them seems to be just a clone of the other, but both games are always unmatched today in term of accessibility, replay factor and simple 4X fun. They are perfectly balanced between macro and micro management, something few 4X can use as an argument. DosBOX runs MoO1 perfectly, and MoO2 with a new 1.40 executable from Lord Brazen runs even better than ever. You can always find people playing both those masterpieces on civfanatics -Operation Flashpoint Certainly the ultimate sandbox for infantry simulation fans like me. Thousand of community addons, islands and mods, hundred of missions and campaigns, with an editor that is so easy to use that even the most clueless beginner can create enjoyable battles in few time, i don't see any needs to buy an updated version like Armed Assault. That updated version being less stable, more buggy and with way higher NASA system requirement does nothing to seduce me anyways as i didn't liked the demo at all. OFP2 from codemasters if done well (and done in a better way than Armed Assault) could hook me. But for now, Operation Flashpoint has even more years to live on my hard drive. -Thief2 Better than the original Thief 1 in any ways, the incredible amount of high quality fan missions assure the player to always have an incredible fun in this middle age stealth game. Trying to visit the maps without being spotted is a fantastic experience. A very long and professionally made free campaign if very high quality of voice, sounds and scenario that is even better than the Thief 2 default one is available there : Thief 2X : Shadow of the Metal Age If you like stealth games and have Thief 2, be sure to get it. Very near that top 5 , i would add Orbiter , YSFlight, Freespace 2 , X-Tension , Sub Command and Steel Beast Gold that i play often, but not as much as the top 5 ones. |
