UEFA Euro 2008

The title is pretty much self explanatory. Who are your favorites?

dosraider 08-06-2008 03:16 PM

[You may ignore this post.]

None, I only can hope that this 'event' will be over soon.

There isn't already much on telly that's worth something, and now your UEFA 2008 gonna screwup the last bit that's worth looking at.

I HATE YOU.

Signed:
A footy hater.

ewwwwwwwww soccer

Panthro 08-06-2008 03:40 PM

Germany are a good bet, or perhaps France, but the team I would most like to see do well are Spain.

Good players, lots of flair, and hopefully lots of goals too. The opening games haven't had much to shout about though.

I don't really like Football (Or 'Soccer') either

BranjoHello 08-06-2008 05:10 PM

Croatia are my favorites, I admire Slaven Bilić and his football knowledge.

Unfortunately they have not qualified this time.

Japo 08-06-2008 11:07 PM

Come on people, we can't have this discussion every time. If you don't like football there's no reason for you to post. Let people have their fun in this topic and participate in others that interest you... :)

Hi Tulac I should know you'd show back for the cup. :D

Actually I don't care a lot about football, but don't hate it either, and I have a favourite team: Spain (whence I am regretfully). Favourite to suck to the max, that is. Spain is going to suck like no other team. Hell Spain is going to suck like Spain hasn't sucked before (whoah talking's easy!).

Dave 08-06-2008 11:09 PM

Oh damn! We are lost without Cannavaro :(

Sadly :(

However, this tournament should be win by a Nike team, maybe Portugal.

Icewolf 09-06-2008 07:37 AM

Oh no, don't behave nerdy people who don't like football! :(

UEFA = Union of European Football Associations, it may be wiki-ed.

Germany FTW!!!
Portugal is cool as well. I have a feeling that France and Italy won't do so well this time, dunno why.

Tulac 09-06-2008 08:58 AM

Yeah Portugal is among my favorites, Germany played quite good and Poland also showed they know how to play even though they lost 2-0.

gregor 09-06-2008 12:49 PM

it seems rather uninteresting this year.

Gemany showed they had some willpower. Unlike usuall they were running all over the place again. Then again they play "almost home" (ein folk, ein reich?!)

Netherlands, Spain, France... That's about it. I can't see anyone else... well Italy always manage to get high. but i haven't seen any of these teams play yet to decide.

Eitherway this year it does seem a bit dull. maybe because we have two weak hosts who took away 2 places for better teams. Then again you can't have everything, so i guess it was their turn to be on the Euro.

The only hting i hate is the TV blackouts - i mean isn't that like against the monopoly policy that EU is being so strict about? what is this if not forcing people to watch only one chanel if they want to see the game? And how is this so different than Microsoft and his embeded Explorer? at least you can still install Firefox there...

Good guess, Icewolf!
Group C seems to be quite surprising this time.
It seems Italia is having a really hard time against the Netherlands.
Good for Germany (looking back at the world championship)..

Tulac 09-06-2008 08:48 PM

Excellent game Ned vs. Ita, the best so far on the champs. The result 3-0 doesn't reflect the game both teams have shown, but the Netherlands certainly deserved to win this one.

And DID somebody see that horrible match GRE-SWE? Man, it was crappy and boring. And I even bought beer and crisps for that evening... :notrust:

after seing about 30 minutes of first half i went to see some series that i have on computer...

wish i could have see Spain though...

Tulac 11-06-2008 09:32 AM

Greece plays such horribly boring football they should be banned from the Euro. :P

Seriously when they attacked it was like this: defenders passing the ball among each other for 2-3 mins, then shooting the ball wide.

gregor 11-06-2008 12:49 PM

they took a Greek philosophical approach to football. :)

Japo 11-06-2008 01:59 PM

More like a Monty Python Greek philosophical approach. :P

Quote:

Hey Russia isn't supposed to be superior to Russia... XD Most Spaniards here actually believe it's the other way around.

Uh oh looks like Spain nearly exhausted its goal quota, they can't possibly score more than half a dozen in the same cup, can they.

Tulac 12-06-2008 06:11 PM

Win against Germany! YEEEEEEEEES!!!

Dave 12-06-2008 09:23 PM

I have a feeling Italy - Romania will be a boring match today, both defensive teams.

gregor 13-06-2008 10:29 AM

But Italy has to win, so it could be interesting...

Ah too bad i missed the match of Croatian with Germany... I only got update on result in the car... And the comentator said that Croatia changed the gameplay and played more offensivelly and better in general.

Oh well there are plenty matches to go.

Somehow this Euro doens't really below to Swiss and Austria... i just can't feel any europhoria in the countries.

Tulac 13-06-2008 11:04 AM

On the match Croatia vs Austria, there were more Croatian fans on the stadium. I think Turkey vs. Swiss there were more Turks.

Jake Grey 13-06-2008 09:37 PM

And here in Britain, the BBC is running endless radio spots encouraging us to pick a European national team to cheer on, ignoring all common wisdom about English football fans in the process; you can practically smell the desperation as they struggle to justify the ridiculous amount of money they've spent on acquiring the broadcast rights to matches nobody gives a toss about, and probably the complete absence of anything but repeats for the duration of the cup as well.
*sigh* You'd think they'd be sufficiently accustomed to the England football team to have a better contingency plan than this.

Icewolf 17-06-2008 09:20 AM

Phew. Qualified. Anything else would have been embarressing... Although I respect the austrian team, Germany HAD to beat them.

OMG, POR - GER is gonna be a huge match!

gregor 17-06-2008 12:19 PM

i would say that portugal will win...
Germany didn't show much so far. then again portugal does have some nervous players who might influence the whole team. and as a result constant pressure from Germany could turn the tides.

Tulac 17-06-2008 01:38 PM

Yeah but honestly Germany didn't show much yet, while Portugal on the other hand did. I'm pleased that our reserve team beat Poland though. :D

Paco 17-06-2008 06:39 PM

Hup Oranje!

I Hope France and Italy will go home. :D

Scarface 17-06-2008 09:19 PM

Can't wait to see GER-POR and ITA-SPA

Icewolf 18-06-2008 10:11 AM

I think CRO - TUR will be a game with lots of fouls in it... :p
ITA - FRA was really lame... But it was clear that NED wouldn't lose against ROM.

Yeah cause of the 10 games they played (that's 11 now) Only 1 was won by ROM and 3 were a draw/tide/equal score.

The rest was won by The Dutch.

Although...............

It would have been fun if the Dutch DID loose from ROM.
(Ok. Not For Italy and France, but still....)

Icewolf 18-06-2008 01:04 PM

It's your game, David. The Italians play rather sedately. So he doesn't fully tune up. It's not about the Bundesliga, it's about your national team.

If Croatia beats Turkey, then we play against Germany again! Hope then we won't miss that many chances and the score will be more realistic than 2-1.

Sorry, David aka Luca Toni. But I'm glad Spain made it. Italy didn't play too attractive, aye?
The first save of Casillas at the penalties was awesome!!!

Dave 23-06-2008 10:11 AM

We didn't play a good match, however I think Spain is one of the strongest Team at the moment.

We did a good defensive job, they didn't score for 120 minutes (same for us unfortunately :cheesy:), but as we said Toni wasn't at 100%.

Damn! :D

Let's see what happen now, btw I would like to see Germany Vs Spain ;)

Japo 23-06-2008 10:46 AM

Two hours and nobody scored, they should get sued for that.

Anyway it's been a long time since no team has better goalkeeper than Spain--and he's got many years left. If we only had one forward that was half as good. Guiza didn't score even when he received the ball inside the area with his arms and the referee didn't see it. :S

I woldn't expect Spain to win the cup though. They can't avoid being scored every match, which means that they should score in turn, and they're not very good at it. Don't forget that they might very well be eliminated just like Italy, the penalty run is like a Russian roulette.

gregor 23-06-2008 11:19 AM

Guiza looked terrible. i was lik "WTF IS THIS GUY DOING HERE?!?!" Then the comentator said he was best scorrer in Spanish league... i don't know if i should laugh or cry.... probably laugh.

anyway i think Torres wasn't that bad. but he should've go for goal a bit more instead of always trying to pass to someone...

Japo 23-06-2008 12:10 PM

Güiza may be the top scorer today, but chances are that he won't be next year. He's from a second-rank team, by the way the Spanish coach Aragonés seems to think that second-rank teams have better players than Madrid, Barcelona, etc...

Quote:

You just hit the nail on the head, that's Spain's problem. Okay the strikers aren't top notch but they'd get luckier if they tried more often. I think that a striker should shoot every time he sees a goal possible at all. Looking for the perfect chance doesn't help the overall chances, on the contrary. Not that Spain scores every time it shoots anyway... 8/ I don't know if the players or the coaches will see this fact some day. At the end of the game against Greece they let it loose and didn't try to plan all their attacks until the last moment, and scored twice against a losing scoreboard.

damnit! i was with Turkey today. good game, anyhow :) 3-2... that last one made me sad cause turkey had a really bad goalkeeper.
anyhow... one of the best matches so far imho!(that second goal from turkey made my night)
beautiful, although i'm a little dissapointed :(

hopefully i'll see tomorrow's game too :D

Japo 27-06-2008 12:11 AM

Spain 3 0 Russia

The final will be Germany vs. Spain

Well I'm impressed, although I saw only the goals. I bet Russia opened up her defence after the first one. But anyway all were more or less beautifully scored; that kind of planned tactics they're trying all the time but most times fail and distract them from just shooting at the damn goal anyhow. I hope Spain keeps it up and win the cup--but if they start playing like losers again they'll lose my support and I'll go back to bitching about them. :P

However the team was specially focused, I've seen it before--like at the start of the last world cup. Experience says that one can't expect this to be a constant behaviour. So let's see. I don't even know how Germany's playing. I saw a little of their game against Turkey here and there at a tavern, and it gave me the impression that they didn't get their butts in gear offensively until they faced a losing scoreboard. Although truth to be told they responded effectively every time. Germany's goalkeeper could honestly have performed better I think; ours is _THE best_ of course, no question about that. :amused:

Nick 27-06-2008 05:25 AM

Our footballists couldn't even get a ball from Spain. And they get million euro/year salary. With such money and playing like that I would hang myself.

Tulac 27-06-2008 10:25 AM

IMO Spain are most certainly the favorites. They played very well through the tournament winning every game until now, only having problems with destructive anti-football teams like Italy and Greece.

On the other hand Germany didn't show much in the group stage (good against Poland, bad against Croatia and Austria), barely won againt Portugal (the 3rd goal was a clear foul by Ballack). And they were bad against the Turks, the worse team for sure. But poetic justice helped them against tje Turks. :D

We'll see, but Spain are clearly my favorites. All throughout the Euro tbh with Netherlands.

I prefer Germany, but yes, I think that Spain can win :)

LOL, catenaccio football style. Italy is one the most defensive teams i've seen these last 10 years. Pirlo and Cannavaro... meh...

I hope Spain nails this one against Germany who was the one who beat us (Portugal) fair and square!

Not Golden IV Award winner? Golden Shot Award winner would also be adequate, but I don't know to what extent this idiom is used in English.

Japo 29-06-2008 11:35 PM

WELL...

At last. :)

Spain played good except for the final metres, as ever; if they had any idea how to stick it in they had scored half a dozen times. Germany was lousy, after the first scary ten minutes when they were creating danger in the Spanish area constantly, they withdrew from the game. They wouldn't have played any different if we had bribed them.

dosraider 30-06-2008 06:46 AM

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA finally, it's over.

Not done of course, 'cause we will have to get through all the .. had we ... had the ball ... if we ... whatevers and whatnots.

So Germany won? Or was it France? Now yeah, what's next? Champions something?

OK OK OK OK OK I'm out of here, no need to shoot me. :D

BTW, did ya peeps know the Tour de France starts soon?
Lets talk about the Tour shall we?

gregor 30-06-2008 10:04 AM

i don't think there will be much "after debate". Spain was simply better - they won all the games and played good in the finals (Germany had only 1 shot in the goal frame).
as for people on dope riding bikes... i think i will wait a bit for them to get thrown out so the real tour can start. :)

dosraider 30-06-2008 10:31 AM

Oh, really? You won't replay all the matches over and over again? You won't debate the refs wrong decisions allover and over again? You won't debate the wrong tactics of the trainers? How you all would have done things in another way and much better?
Just think 'bout it, all the if and had and .....

Tsss tssss, what a shame. It's usually extremely entertaining.

And of course it's common knowledge that footballers don't take stuff ..... :D

Glad to be PWNED, sir. :D

But seriously, Spain moves the ball all right but has the same problem as ever. If I made a selection with eleven clones of my granny, they'd had scored 5 to 0 against that kind of Germany. It was annoying to see a guy inside the area and in front of the goal pass the ball to someone without angle, they're terrified of shooting. I had made a forecast that they'd reach the penalties 0 to 0, and it nearly got true.

I'm glad about Spain but the fact that they were the best team is sad for European football.

If the referee would have made the right decisions, Spain would have lost. And they couldn't complain since they were not able to score goals. And don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying this out of defiance - I doesn't care about the German team, only about few players.

If I were you I wouldn't fly that coffee maker within ten metres of a long-barrelled .45 six-shooter.

Anyway that's enough off-topicness for this topic thnx.

If you say so. :cheesy: They were able to score one goal, which was enough since Germany scored none. I don't remember any controversial referee's decissions. The thousands of Germans in the stadium didn't protest specially at any time, maybe they missed something you saw. :p

No really Germany stood no chance simply because they were incredibly lousy. They didn't even play most of the time they were on the field.

Tulac 30-06-2008 09:45 PM

Well if the referee's were perfect Germany would be out in 1/4 finals against Portugal, when Ballack scored while clearly fouling the defensive player. But meh they aren't perfect, and Spain showed much more in that game and on the championship in general so congratulations to them!

I mean 1 shot on target during the whole match? You can hardly blame the referee for that. :D

If by this you meant something as:
He's interested because he hopes to see some blood and guts, something as the Romans when they watched some gladiators killing eachother in an arena, then yes, I'm interested.
