Conan - Hall of Volta
I remember a game I played when I was really young, but now can't remember the name of it.
It's a side view game, where each screen is a level (i.e. sort of like Bubble Bobble in that way, even though it plays nothing like Bubble Bobble). The first level, there are five floors on the left, and a bird (an owl?) on the upper right. The bird alternates between attacking the second and fourth floors, and attacking the third floor. So to beat this level, you have to jump up while the bird is still flying from its normal position to the floors. The fifth floor is the way out. There was a secret on the very right, where if you jump off the top into the tree on the right, there's an extra life (I think) in the tree. The 6th (I think) level had a candle in the middle of the room. I remember that when you get to higher floors on the 6th level, the flame of the candle gets larger. I suspect this game came out before 1986, because I moved in 1986 (and I think I played it before I moved), but not sure on that one. |
Hmm... Remember what system it was for?
|
I would guess for the PC (simply because I don't recall having any consoles at that age) but I could be wrong.
|
Is it by any chance Bomb Jack?
http://www.mobygames.com/images/shot...7489909-00.gif (Commodore 64 version on screenshot) Can't say it's Prince of Persia-like, though, so it's probably not it. |
Hmm...seems too "colorful" to be the game. It had a more serious feel.
I remember something about level 4 (or so) having waterfalls or something...just remember one of the secrets was in there. Level 1 looked something like this: +-----------------------+ |<-- to next level | +-------------------+ | | | | +------- -------+ | | B | | +------- | | | | | +-------------------| | | Start * | +------------------------+ You start at the bottom left, and the bird would alternate between attacking (moving to) the second and fourth floors, or the third floor. At the lower right corner is a tree (the "*"), so after you jump up to the platforms, then over to the right (so that you're on the platform above the bird), you jump toward the right and land on the tree, thus collecting your extra life. Then you jump up and head left for the next level. |
Oops let me try that diagram again...
+-----------------------+ |<-- to next level......| +-------------------+...| |...................|...| +-------.....-------+...| |...............B...|...| +-------............|...| |...................|...| +-------------------+...| |..Start..............*.| +-----------------------+ |
Ah. I shall try to investigate some further for ya.

I've been searching for about half an hour now, and what fits the criteria the most is... Sir Lancelot.
http://i41.tinypic.com/s1001s.png http://www.mobygames.com/game/sir-lancelot- Could that be it? At least knowing what year it was from would make my search a whole lot of easier, anyway. :p |
Hmm not it. I've looked through all the games on Abandonia up to 1988 but haven't seen it yet. Ahh well, guess I'll try Mobygames as well, except that it doesn't browse by screenshots.

you can open up gazillion tabs in your firefox/opera and set your mouse to "screenshots" button position, then keep hitting ctrl+tab and clicking mouse like a monkey

That sounds a lot like the first level of Conan for the Apple, one of my fav games as a boy. I must have finished that game 100 times over.
Anyways, have a look... http://www.mobygames.com/game/apple2...eShotId,42897/ |
Whoa! That looks so much like what he is describing!
Can't wait for his reply... I'm so eager to find out if that's it. :woot2: |
Yes!
That looks pretty much like the game (I looked at a walkthrough on YouTube), even though I couldn't follow much of what's going on now. It's kind of weird...I don't recall having an Apple computer when I was young, (or an Atari or Commodore for that matter), but apparently it was released only for Apple II, Atari, and Commodore 64. I suppose maybe my parents took the system away after seeing the kids play on it so much... EDIT: By the way, forgot to say thanks for figuring it out =P |
Oh woot.

You have to see MobyGames (and other sites') infos the other way round: It's not that a game was only released on the platforms stated, but at least. There was a DOS version of this game.
|
I would love to see that remake, but it no longer exists in the link provided =(
NP Van, glad to finally get one of those right =P As soon as you talked about the tree outside, I just knew it was Conan. The "bird" is a bat BTW =P |
Man, I just watched a youtube vid of a play through of this game. Good memories =) It took me forever to figure out that you had to cut down the chandelere to smash that big blue eye. Also, when you're a kid the game doesn't seem so darn short. Why are we complaining about 8-10 hour games now-a-days =P

D-D-D-D-Download! of the remake.
