Review and Download (if available)

saidie 05-05-2004 07:23 PM

Although the game itself was very playable I disliked it due to my inept playing skills :(

Guess its ok then. :/

Stroggy 05-05-2004 07:59 PM

thank you kosta and Tom Henrik the forum smurf

LotharGR 05-05-2004 09:35 PM

And i had just noted that the games in the RPG section are only 2... :) thanks tom :)

I_Wanna_Be_A_Pirate 05-05-2004 11:16 PM

Good, thanx tom it looks good can't wait to play it!

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 06:20 AM

I am glad you guys seem to like the game. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask. It is one of my favourite games, ever.

(Look out for the first game in the series to appear on the site, soon.)

mika 06-05-2004 07:07 AM

Hey man, the game looks good from the review, I can't wait to try it out.

Thanks!

Stroggy 06-05-2004 07:45 AM

ehm
this is odd
I can't seem to figure out how to install it

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 08:36 AM

You do not have to install it. Just extract the files to a directory of your choice, and run it in DosBox. :)

Stroggy 06-05-2004 09:27 AM

okay
now this is odd
i've been using dosbox for some time now and i've never had any problems
but now the game is giving me quite cryptic message
"someone has destroyed the magic values for this block! system's integrity endangered!"
at first I assumed it was some kind of old copy protection
but nothing works
damn I feel so stupid now

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 09:50 AM

Ok, THAT beats me. I haven't used DosBox for long, so I can't help you with that program. As for the message you typed. I have never even seen it before. Did the game work at all for you? Were you able to see the intro or did you just get a blank screen?

(Goes away to download the game from this site, and try it out for my self. Maybe I'll get some more ideas about what could be the problem).

The Niles 06-05-2004 10:15 AM

Best thing to do is head over to the DOSBox forums and see what that means. Be sure to check if the game will run at all under DOSBox, if not they might get angry.

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 10:17 AM

The only problems I have found can be considered small....

1. It takes some time for the game to load a video sequence. First time this happened I thought the game had locked up, because this does not happen in the original.
2. Some videos start and end in white and black.
3. The frame around the videos shows up and then disappears.
4. Animation can sometimes be slow.

But none of these flaws causes the game to halt.
Both sound and music works fine.

The only MAJOR problem I have discovered on the downloadable version is the inability to save the game! :? (BIG PROBLEM!!)

Is there a key you could press to make the DosBox save the game? (For instance the Nintendo Emulator uses the F5 key).

Stroggy 06-05-2004 10:29 AM

well its obviously something from the game itself (its talking about magic and stuff) and its in red letters

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 10:40 AM

What did you do right before the game came to a stop?

LotharGR 06-05-2004 11:02 AM

Well.. on the first screen ( still in the temple ) i pressed the icon with the diskette and then i pressed the icon with the disk labed "S" and with the characters upon it... i assumed that this was the way to save the game.. but when i pressed it, it asked me a word from the manual... so this is the copy protection.

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 11:20 AM

Exactly. This question is not supposed to appear! Since I do not have the english manual, I have no idea what the words the copy protection wants. (You get three tries, and then the game quits).

Luckily this is not the case with game number 1. No copy-protection.

That is why I was wondering if there was a key you could press to let the DosBox save the game instead.

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 12:55 PM

The manual to the game is now available in the game section (below the map)!

It details minimum requirements for characters, magic in the game, hints and so forth. Check it out!

re Star Trail

Hope I am putting this in the right spot. I wanted it in the Star Trail section, but am not really familar with forums so I am sorry if I am doing something stupid - not the first time.

Anyway, I thank you for putting this download on the site and was looking forward to trying it. I tried it using Dosbox and starting the game using the Star.exe file and got the same message as someone else indicated - " Star Trail Guru Meditation Someone has destroyed the magic values for this block! system's integrity endangered" Weird!

I then tried installing it from a regular Dos command prompt within Windows XP and it asked whether disk 1 was in drive A or B. Since the file is all on drive C I couldn't choose either and it wouldn't install. I then tried starting the game with star.exe in the regular Dos command prompt and got the Star Trail Guru Meditation message.

Anyone figure this out?

Stroggy 06-05-2004 08:28 PM

welcome to the forum

nope
i've tried everything but I haven't had any luck
and with the exams approaching I'm not thinking clearly
i'm sure there is a perfectly logical answer to this.
but honestly, i'm quite close to giving up

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 08:30 PM

Welcome to the Forum, jello. :)

Yes this is the correct place for your question.

As for your problem, you do not have to install the game, in order to play it. Just type "star" in the Dos prompt. If you try to install the game it simply copies the exact same files to another directory. The reason the install program is asking for disk 1 is that you probably have crossed out the speech pack. This feature does not exist on the english version.

Keep in mind that this is a German remake of a game in English. Germans, in particular, are not good translators. (Watch out for the occasional mistranslations in the game). And there are very few germans who speak English. That is the reason why speech is not included.

The option is only left in the install program. They probably forgot to remove it.

Hope this has helped you a bit.
(Remember to download the manual and map too).
(Also it took me some time to make them  )

Kosta 06-05-2004 08:35 PM

Weird, really.... I tried running the game on disk C, D, E, tried running it from a long directory name.... just can't seem to get that error :(

When does the error appear exactly?

Tom Henrik 06-05-2004 08:36 PM

By the way.

The first game in the Trilogy (Blade of Destiny) is on the way. It is all up to Kosta now. He has all the files. I would suggest you try to play this game before Star Trail.
This way you will also give me some time to try and find a solution to the apparant problems in Star Trail.

I do not have the manual for that game, but you really do not need it.
(The only difference between that manual and the one for Star Trail is the minimum requirements for character creation).

Anonymous 07-05-2004 01:56 AM

re Guru Meditation Error

Using either DosBox or a regular Dos Command Box in Win XP. I have the game files that I downloaded in a directory c:/Dosgames/Star. I change the directory into the Star Directory and type in Star. I then get the Guru Meditation Error in orange letters. If I type install instead of star, I get the message to pick A or B drive.

Wonder if it is just Win XP. Thanks for the help.

Tom Henrik 07-05-2004 07:17 AM

I can't understand that Win XP should be the problem, since I use it. When I play the game, I use the DosBox version downloaded from this site.

That works for me. :?

You guys who have problems with red and orange text appearing, can you see or hear ANYTHING from the game? (Pictures, the intro video, music being played...) or do you get troubles immediatly after typing STAR.

Kosta 07-05-2004 09:59 AM

I have re-uploaded the game, this time with the installation program so all of you having trouble, re-download the game and install it from scratch. Hope that helps :?

jello 07-05-2004 02:00 PM

You guys are pretty cool for helping with this problem so fast. I really didn't expect you to answer for awhile.

The orange screen appears immediately after I type star to start the game. There is no sound or other screen or video, nothing but this black screen with orange letters that starts off "Star Trail Guru Meditation".

I will be downloading it again as you have suggested and will try again.

Thanks so much.

Tom Henrik 07-05-2004 02:08 PM

Yeah! We rock! 8)

No, but seriously... This site is all about having fun. And playing old games is fun. Not being able to play the game, however, is NOT! So we try to help everyone.

Besides, we do not want to have a game on the site that is unplayable. We try to avoid this as best we can. Therefore it is important that people, such as yourself, tells us about problems that you encounter.

I am also on the look-out for a new Star Trail on the net, so that we can try to change the files. Just in case it is the old file that has a problem.

jello 07-05-2004 06:38 PM

Don't be modest, you guys really do rock. Thank you, thank you , thank you. I re downloaded the new file as suggested and installed and it works. I haven't really got into the game, but I was so excited that it worked - sound and everything, that I wanted to let you know, so you would know that it worked. And did I mention - Thank you. :P

Tom Henrik 07-05-2004 06:43 PM

I'm glad the game finally worked for you. :)

Let's hope it will work for Stroggy too.

Stroggy 07-05-2004 07:33 PM

yeah it works
but its quite confusing
I believe the movies are skipped
so i don't have a clue what the game is about (except that I have to find the salamander stone)
movement is odd to even frustrating

Tom Henrik 08-05-2004 09:08 AM

Ok.
That does it.

I am not going to rest until I have another file of the game!

Since it seems that there are a lot of problems with this game, I would suggest people to run an AntiVirus program on the folder. Maybe this folder is the cause for the deletion of abandonia.com.

And, Stroggy. I have looked into the thing you said about the videos being gone. That is not the case. The videos work, but the first sentence seems to be missing. Your first quest is to locate the Salamander Stone, so you have gotten the information you need.

But, as I said, I'm going to locate another download.

Stroggy 08-05-2004 09:11 AM

still its quite strange
like when you talk to that elf
the first line you read is "so you see"
as if at first he had explained some long detailed story
and when you talk to the second person in the tavern he starts of with saying "and since when have you heard of elvish..."

quite odd
anyway I have had a small virus tampering with internet explorer for a few days now
It is possible that it started when I downloaded Star Trail
but it could also be something else

Anonymous 14-05-2004 12:06 PM

It doesn't semm to work anyway. :(
When I try to install the game (by opening the Install.exe), the dosbox appears, but suddenly dissapears again. Anybody could help me? :(
Plus, the Manual seems to be not there anymore.

Hope you can help!

Tom Henrik 14-05-2004 02:54 PM

I am still looking for a new patch for this game.
Too many problems with it.

As for the manual, it is possible that Kosta forgot to upload it after the site was deleted.

I'll send him a copy.

Anonymous 14-05-2004 07:12 PM

Well, it managed to install it, but now when I want to start the Program, my PC tells me that I havent got enough EMS space.

Danny252 14-05-2004 07:48 PM

Try Dosbox, a free Dos Emulator. I forget links..

Tom Henrik 14-05-2004 07:52 PM

There is a link to DosBox on the main site of Abandonia.

The manual is also been fixed.

Anonymous 15-05-2004 09:43 AM

Well, I used Dos-Box and it worked amzingly well! :D
The Game's fun, although I still have prblems with movement (It doesn't run very smooth) and character generation (I'm not able to enter names...), but I played this games lots of years ago, and I hope I will agian.

Anonymous 15-05-2004 10:40 AM

Hi all! I just downloaded that game, and it works fine. But I can't save. each time I want to, I'm asked to enter a certain word from a certain page of the manual, but the manual aviable for Download here hasn't got any pages
HELP! PLEASE!
:(

Tom Henrik 15-05-2004 10:49 AM

Damn!

This game is really hard to find on the net. I will not give in. I will find another version. One that works, and does not ask stupid questions before allowing saving.

(Strange that the game works for some, but not for others...)

Look for an update soon.

Anonymous 20-05-2004 12:38 PM

The manual does not work :/. Does anyone know of another link to the manual? Because I am unable to create my own character without it.

Anonymous 20-05-2004 12:39 PM

And is the manual for Blade of Destiny also available somewhere?

Tom Henrik 20-05-2004 01:03 PM

What do you mean by the manual doesn't work?

Can't you download it, or is it something written in the manual?

Unfortunately, I wrote that manual myself because I could not find it on the net...

As for the manual for Blade of Destiny, it is on it's way...
Just hold in there for a couple of days, and I should have it fixed.

Anonymous 20-05-2004 03:33 PM

Sorry for not being clear enough. I meant, the download link for the Realms of Arkania: Star Trail manual does not work. Internet Explorer gives me an error and flashget a rend blimp.

Good to know the Blades of Destiny manual is coming up

Anonymous 22-05-2004 08:22 AM

Hmmm, couldn't it be possible to host the actual (english) version of the game AND the other (German) one? The fact that you can't save in the English one makes it pointless to play it... so, if anybody could host it it would be fine, altough a working English one would be great.

Maybe its because you have formatted your drives in ntfs, and the installer only can see fat32 fat16 drives?

ill try later tonight testing this game on my old pentium-S 133Mhz computer.

Anonymous 24-05-2004 05:36 PM

Hi all!

Umm...does anyone else get asked something like: "Page 13, Line 8, word 4: _____________ " when you try to save a game?

I made 6 chars, played for awhile and then went to save. Of course, I didn't type that thing (3 times) and it exited back to dos(box) O_O

help please :)

Tom Henrik 24-05-2004 05:55 PM

The game is copy-protected... :(

This is something we discovered after the game was put on the page... :?

I am working on the case, right now. It is I who uploaded the game to the sit, so it is I who is responsible for the error! :x

I would suggest you download Blade of Destiny instead, since it is the first game in the trilogy... and the Realms of Arkania trilogy is loosely connected. This will give me some more time to fix the problem with the copy-protection.

I am, as I write this, downloading over 7 different Star Trail games on eMule, and I am also searching the net for a version that is save-able. I'm also, thanks to FreeFreddy, trying to crack the game with some files he has given me from the original game.

So I am hoping that I will soon find or get a solution to the problem.
Please bear with me while I am doing all this.

Anonymous 24-05-2004 06:03 PM

Ok, cool. No problem. Thnx for quick reply.
And good luck! :D

Anonymous 04-06-2004 04:19 AM

sorry but who said you could just unzip the files in a folder and run Star to play???

i mean ...... there IS NO Star file in the zip file

and this is just great ................ i installed the game and run star, i says

Star Trail (blah blah) requires a minimum of 688128 Byte free XMS/EMS Memory. Your system only has 1114112 Bytes.

YOu don't need to be a super maths guy to figure that i DO have enough memory

FreeFreddy 04-06-2004 06:39 AM

This is a known problem as the game supports only 16 MB expanded memory and shall crash if you have more. My game never crashed although I have 1 GB memory, but this doesn't mean that it couldn't on other PC's. So I have a small program supplied with the game called "EATXMS.EXE" that reduces your XMS-only memory to 16 MB for the game and makes the rest unavailable, but don't worry, if you run the game in Dos-shell, after you exit it your memory is back again. I could e-mail it to anyone that needs it (it's more than simple to use), hoping that perhaps that would help with the memory-start-problem. The guests just PM me your e-mail adress and the file will be there.

Anonymous 06-06-2004 07:22 PM

shadows over riva

You can find Shadows over Riva in www.suprnova.org in bittorent form. The only catch is..since the original game has cd audio, the version available is musicless!!! and since the game had absolutely incredibly music..but take a look anyway[/i]

FreeFreddy 07-06-2004 06:04 AM

Well, ths ".torrent"-files make no sense for me, as I cannot do anything with them, so I think this is somewhat stupid page. :?

Anonymous 07-06-2004 10:53 AM

well you first have to download a bittorent client.Basically it's a filesharing program that breaks the file into thousands of little pieces so you can download them from users around the world.Go to sourceforge.net and type torrent in the search box.Choose one (bittorent is the easiest) and run the torrent file through that.

Anonymous 08-06-2004 06:03 PM

Hello all

U can download Realms of Arkania: Star Trail from www.gamebird.dk.
U will download .exe file which will extract game to specified folder. Run install from extracted game directory and specify folder where u want to install the game. Be sure to copy crack file to game dir and run it there cuz if u dont do it u wont be able to save. I ran the game from DosBox and it's working fine.

Have Fun all

Tom Henrik 08-06-2004 06:31 PM

I feel like such a fool....

The download on this site has a crack file in it...
All of you who already have downloaded the game from this site, CAN save... Just run the crack file BEFORE you run the game.

It will still ask for the words on pages yattah yattah ya... but just type whatever you wish. And the game is saved.

How could I have missed that file?!

But I would still advice you to play the Blade of Destiny first. Just to get the chronologie correct.

Anonymous 08-06-2004 06:36 PM

:)

btw...is it possible in Star Trail to make movement like it was in Blade of Destiny?

Tom Henrik 08-06-2004 07:17 PM

I'm not sure I understand what you mean...

The only difference between the movement in these two games are that the moves in Star Trail is animated, so it gives you a greater feeling of moving in reality.

Both games uses both mouse control or keyboard control.

FreeFreddy 08-06-2004 08:35 PM

He meant that cubic turn and move which is only the way to move in Blade of Destiny. Yes it is possible to have the same movement in Star Trail like in Blade of Destiny, you can set this in options menu, F3-button if I recall right, then look for something like 3D-movement (could have another name in English version), either way I'm sure you'll find it there.
I, for my part, prefer the sliding 3D-movement which Star Trail offers, it just looks better for me and is much easier to steer.

Tom Henrik 08-06-2004 08:56 PM

I could not agree more, my semi-russian-german friend. I really like the 3D movement. Makes the game more alive.

Anonymous 08-06-2004 10:54 PM

The full, version of "Realms of Arkania III: Shadows Over Riva" can be downloaded here (45MB).

I didn't manage to turn the sound on so I don't know whether it's just my system or the soundfiles are missing. Other than that, the game seems like a full version, saving is possible, and is compatible with Windows XP. It also features full (although primitive) 3D graphics.

It would be cool if it was added to this site's game lists. :)

Tom Henrik 09-06-2004 05:14 AM

Wow!

That is the smallest file I have seen on the game! My findings mostly includes Shadows over Riva files that are over 100 MB!!
(Which needless to say, is too big for the site at this time).

Thanks!
I'll download it immediately and start to play it. If it is indeed the fullversion, then it might end up on the site.
(I say might, because Kosta have the final desicion in this... and 40 MB is still pretty big!)

FreeFreddy 09-06-2004 05:48 AM

That link doesn't work.

Anonymous 10-06-2004 12:32 AM

The link does work, but the FTP it's on is limited to 700 downloads at any given time (from all users), so if they are all taken you will need to wait.

The game is missing the sound and cutscenes (which is a pity since they are made in quite good 640x480), but the gameplay itself is intact.

FreeFreddy 10-06-2004 06:05 AM

Well, I lukily have the full game on CD so I can enjoy the nice music and the interesting cutscenes. Only there's that problem that it breaks up after the intro under WinXP or 98, but haven't try it under DosBox yet, perhaps it would go on there.

Anonymous 10-06-2004 11:53 AM

Riva is a great game! The town really feels alive and the rpg element is soaring more than any other rpg i've SEEN! Is there no way we could hear the music though? Have you in your travels seen a site which hosts a complete image of the disc?i

Anonymous 16-06-2004 05:19 PM

Crash in Star Trail

Oh no!! Star trail seems to crash right after you exit the Temple of Phex in Tiefhusen! Have any of you experienced the same problem?

Tom Henrik 16-06-2004 06:32 PM

In my case the game do not crash...

It just takes some time to load the next scene, which is a video. Have you tried to let the game run?

Anonymous 16-06-2004 06:45 PM

Please help me, the game works without bigger problems but too slowly to be playable. I finished it long ago on my old comp. so I know how it should work. Now I have to run it in dosbox and the speed is terrible..is there no other way?

And there is this problem with battles, sometimes everything dissapears and I have to switch to autocombat to finish the battle because both enemies and my party are either invisible or (when moving) all over the place(every animation of movement stays on the screen) the game did this years ago so I suppose there is no way to prevent it ???

Thanks for your reply and sorry for my english.

Tom Henrik 16-06-2004 07:03 PM

Star Trail is not completely compatibel with DosBox.
Therein lies the core of the problem. The best way to run this game is through the useage of Dos.

I know this is not the good news you were hoping for, but it is the awful truth... :(

Anonymous 17-06-2004 08:14 AM

Yes there is this cutscene with the priest of Phex which plays just fine.Then..just when it finishes.. dosbox shuts down with some king of segmentation error display. I'll probably just skip the temple and go straight to Tjolmar if there is no other way..

The speed seems to go just fine on dosbox..Have you tried to emulate more Cpu cycles/min? I run it on 150 Mhz with 32 Ram.

Tom Henrik 19-06-2004 09:16 AM

It's called a RPG... There is no sport involved.

Data 20-06-2004 06:39 PM

care to give me a savegame after which dosbox would crash with star trail ?
Maybe I can figure out what's wrong

Tom Henrik 21-06-2004 06:00 AM

The problem is solved.

Just run the crack file first, then you can save and load as much as you want to :D :D

ferret_shui 24-06-2004 04:26 AM

HELP?!?!

cannot load preious party from blade of destiny! also i honestly have no idea how to do this. :?:

Tom Henrik 24-06-2004 04:57 AM

Me neither.

But if I am correct, you can find alot of information on the net as to how this is done. One thing I am absolute sure of, is that you will need a patch. Your "Blade of Destiny" charachters will walk around with "baby-heads" witout the patch.

If you find out how you transfer your old crew to "Star Trail", then please share it with the rest of us.

FreeFreddy 24-06-2004 07:13 AM

You just need to copy the saved game from Blade of Destiny in to savegame's directory of Star Trail, it will be converted automatically to Star Trail savegame if you load that savegame (should be converted, if it fails, load it again), that's it.

Chef Boyardee 10-08-2004 03:50 AM

Hey, I probably won't be sticking around on the forums too long, but I'd just like to take a moment and thank you guys for hosting this awesome game. This is the best game I've ever played and I've been looking for it for a long time, I really want to thank you. I remember sitting next to my dad watching him play this for hours when I was a kid, and when my grandmother gave me a copy of it so many years ago as a present. I played this game for hours on end, it really is my favorite game. I can't really express how thankful I am. This site is great, you guys rock. Thanks a lot!

I have the game music available for download at the following url if you'd like: http://chef.blade2k.net/Star%20Trail.rar

Thanks again for hosting this awesome game.

Tom Henrik 10-08-2004 04:58 AM

I know how you feel. The game was my first upload to this site, and it is one of the best RPG's I have played to this date.

I personally have the original German version at my place. :D

FreeFreddy 10-08-2004 06:48 AM

The other 2 parts in German, too? ;)

Tom Henrik 10-08-2004 02:19 PM

Unfortunately.... no.

I only have Sternenschweif

FreeFreddy 10-08-2004 05:28 PM

I don't use MSN, ICQ or like thing, but if you need the both German versions, we could do something about it...

Tom Henrik 10-08-2004 07:32 PM

Thanks for the offer, Freddy.

But seeing as I already have the English versions... I don't need the other in German as well :)

I came across this problem when playing the german version with DosBox. I'm not exactly sure why there is an error, but here's my solution: IT was caused by the mous. The moment i moved the mouse the game crashed. The solution is to cut off the mouse just for this little scene, play it and save it right after leaving the temple using your keyboard. After that you can start the game again and use the mouse again, at least that's how I solved this little problem in the german version.

I really really want to play this game but I can't get it to run! When i extract the files there is no star.exe only a file called star.fn. so when i type star at the prompt it is not recognized as a command. Also, when i try to run the crack file it says "Error: Unable to locate file to patch!" What am i doing wrong? Please help!

FreeFreddy 10-11-2004 12:07 PM

Missing the .exe file? Hmm, tried to download again?

Rosella 11-11-2004 01:05 PM

it's ok, i downloaded it again and ran the install file in dosbox and now it's working! buuuutt, now i have another problem: does anyone know how to get the fight scenes to run properly? i can make maby two or three moves and then the screen starts flashing! (sorry i'm being so annoying about this...)

Hmm, tried lowering the CPU cycles?
Also perhaps try this:
Find in dosbox.conf a line that looks like this - "output=surface". Above you should see the available options.
"# output -- What to use for output: surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw."
Try experimenting with them. If that doesn't help, well, :help:
;)

Sheek 11-11-2004 03:41 PM

Hi.

If anyone is intersted you can get NPC's to use as your characters. This works in Arkania I, I'm not sure about part II. Just use Dos-prompt to copy the files renamed as .chr instead of .npc - ie. in the directory with the character info "copy *.npc *.chr". If you want to transfer them to the next game in the series, you need to open a game add those new characters to your team and save it again, then transfer the save game file.

I don't know if you're still looking for a Blades of Destiny manual but you can find one on www.the-underdogs.org

Cool site you have here.

Guest 11-11-2004 03:43 PM

Forgot to add,

Is anyone going to upload Arkania III onto this site? I thought that it was protected by copyright law so I was surprised when I read that. If you do I'd be interested in knowing how you get on with the music aspect.

Guest_Rosella 15-11-2004 08:52 AM

Thanks for your help, i'll give it a try!

papafink 20-11-2004 04:58 PM

Hi. I had a question about the game play itself. I played this game years ago and really liked it. My favorite part was character creation. I just downloaded the game and got it to run under XP (although with no sound and the mouse is funky) and went and created a couple of characters. But I never got past the first screen with the attributes to the skill selection screens. I thought I remembered being able to select skills at initial character creation, but does upgrading skills not come until you get a level up?

Thanks.

Chef Boyardee 21-11-2004 01:13 AM

You have to run the game on advanced mode, not normal difficulty.

papafink 21-11-2004 02:09 AM

Oh yeah. I forgot all about that. Thanks very much!

dusty 11-12-2004 10:26 PM

Did the person who had the flashing combat screen fix it? How did you do it? I have this problem and changing the framerate in dosbox didn't work for me.

thanks if you can help.

Guest 04-01-2005 09:07 PM

Use the Fix program that was also included in the zip file.

Hi everybody! In the old days I praised this game, worshipped it! However I couldn't play it, because the graphics got really bad in the combat. So bad that I couldn't see anthing after a while. I regretted it until today. I thoght I'll give the game another try with XP, super machine, fixes and patches.

Again the graphics get all screwed when I use magic in the combat. Like in the old days!!!! I tried to run the patch, but when I do it it says it is missing a file: PATCH.RTP. everything else works fine, only when I use magic in the battle...

PLEASE, PLEASE help... many thanks!

Thanks!!!! 07-03-2005 12:11 AM

I just wanted to thank the admins of the site who had Star Trail up on their server! I've been searching for this game for almost four years now, and now that i've got it, i'm gonna go and finish what I started about 10 years ago. Thanks again for having this game available! :Brain: :ok:

The download on this site has a crack file in it...
All of you who already have downloaded the game from this site, CAN save... Just run the crack file BEFORE you run the game.

It will still ask for the words on pages yattah yattah ya... but just type whatever you wish. And the game is saved.

How could I have missed that file?!

But I would still advice you to play the Blade of Destiny first. Just to get the chronologie correct.

Dear Tom henrik,

I read your comment on saving the game. When I try to run the crack.com-file, is says Error: unable to locate the file to patch. I try to run this file after I installed the game, but before I play it. Do you have any idea how crack the game in another way?

thanks in advance,

Huub

move the crack.com file to the directopry you unzipped the game and then run it. You can type anything with the savequestion!

I can't find Shadows over Riva ANYWHERE. Ebay only has one single Arkania game :( Does anyone know where I can get it (download preferrably since USA shops are rip offs when it comes to P&P).

Mad-E-Fact 20-03-2005 05:32 PM

There is a way to obtain it, but I'd rather see someone confirm its abandonware status first. HOTU only has a buy link for the trilogy, so I'm not too sure if it's legal for me to post it here. ;)

Yeah I checked that out. They charge $25 to mail a simple CD! I'm not paying 4 times as much for shipping than for the actual game. That's just a waste of money.

Try putting fix.com in the game directory and running it. You can find that in the zip you downloaded the game from.

After that, start the game with:
star /g:bios

That extra command should take care of the colors getting all screwy. That works for me, and now I don't get scrambled combat graphics or screwy colors after spells like lightning or in conversations with NPCs.

Does anybody have another solution?

When i try to save the game, it shows me a screen which requires a certain word on certain page and line. That would be okey, i downloaded a manual for this game. (from this site) And now this. This is not the original manual from the game so i cannot play. It asks for a word on page 34 and there in the manual are only 24 pages. It has small letters. Hi

I have a little ingame problem (in the Dwarven pit) can anybody help me, pls ?:help:

In Lvl 6, there is a chest with clothing, a parchment which says that i must wear some things and light a torch at some kind of picture

Walktrough says this :
Take only the necessary amount of leather equipment from the chest and equip it.
Light a torch and hold it to the picture.

Well and my problem is, that i can find only some kind of wall (it's wery near of stairs):wall: .. but i haven't been able to find any kind of picture or something:eeeeeh:

Anybody knows ?
(I can send a savegame..)

Gamefreak 17-04-2005 07:07 PM

There's a door, behind it is a chest with couple of leather jackets and leather boots (they are inverted compared to original boots). You need to put for each of your chars the jackets and the boots on and walk on the red tiles that go from there. Then you'll reach the picture you read about and use the ignited torch on it. ;)

Well there are 2 doors

after first one, there is wall, when i touch it, it says "Good work, if i say so myself. You really made short order of that door"

And after second, there are 2 chests

first contain
5 pants
5 shirts
5 robes
5 winter coats
5 quilt armour

second :
key ring
crossbows and bolts
war axe

there is also 1 strange wall, which says
"I guess there was a passage once, but it seems to have bricked up.....etc"
"Whoever did this knew his job well.."

Tom Henrik 17-04-2005 08:16 PM

Smash the bricked up wall, or use magic to walk through the wall ;)

Hi, can anyone tell me why are the shops in those tents are gone?
How long do I have to wait for them to come back?

I'm in the starting town.

Tom Henrik 17-04-2005 11:16 PM

The shops are only opened once every week. It is the town fair. So you have to wait a whole week for them to open.

It just so happens that you begin the game the day before the fair, so that when you wake up the shops are there to help you get much needed supplies. :ok:

Hi, is anyone going to post Shadows over Riva?

Henrik, did you mention earlier that you have it? Would you maybe file-share it if not post?

Many thanks

rikitikitavi

Gamefreak 08-05-2005 05:03 PM

Shadows over Riva won't even work well under DosBox, as it's too slow there. It needs at least Pentium 100 to run smoothly and DosBox emulates only up to an 486DX4 100 with the more fast PC's today, speak at around 14000 CPU cycles maximum, which isn't fast enough for Shadows over Riva. Well, unless you the entry in the dosbox.conf from core=normal to core=dynamic which should allow to at least double the CPU cycles. Didn't try that yet, though. :)

AngelusCordana 18-05-2005 01:55 PM

Hey !
I'm interested in DSA 2 Sternenschweif ^^
That would make things much easier ;)

Another question...i have won a fight but suddenly my chars have 4/9 hp ???
my other chars died, but my dwarf survived...why is that happening ? a bug or something else ? it cant be normal that my dwarf first has 50 hp and suddenly only 9 max hp. Oo

HEEEEELPP ME !

Arnulf 23-05-2005 10:20 AM

I can answer Tom's query about importing your Blade of Destiny party to Star Trail. Simply copy your final Blade game, (where it says "Which game do you want to save) after the final battle, to your save game directory in Star Trail. First time you load the game in Star Trail, it will say "Game Successfully Converted". Hope that helps.

I have a query for you. After the patch is installed (I'm playing with the original Cd based game) do you load your game, or do you have to run the patch? I t used to work, but on the Disk based game. That was in DOS. I 'm now using Windows 98SE. Hope this makes sense, that I'm not babbling total nonsence, and you or someone knows what to do. Because I'm currently playing with the "Baby Heads". :kosta: :kosta: :Titan: :help:

Tom Henrik 23-05-2005 11:51 AM

Personally I have never imported characters, so I can't help you. I only know it is possible. But it also makes the game too easy. It's like playing the game in GOD MODE. Simply no fun at all.

Olli 03-06-2005 09:40 AM

Hi Guys!

Is it possible to run the game on Windows XP? If yes, tell me how to do it, please!

If I try it, there's always the message "can't find patch file" and the crack doesn't work too.

Please send me some answeres.

Thanks

That is actually all you need to get the game running.

You must mount the C:\ in order to use DOSBox, and the DOSBox tutorial explains how. :ok:

Olli 19-06-2005 05:06 PM

I did it like the tutorial tells me. I mounted C: and D: for alternative but in DOSBox is "Z:" shown anyway.

I typed in

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount C C:\DOS\CDDrive
mount E E:\ -t cdrom
C:
CLS

and I installed everythin in a folder calles "flash" on Drive C

(E is my CD drive)

I also copied the CRACK into the new folder and started it. --> Message "File successfully" (shown for half a second)

That's what the tutorial tells me. I don't know what i did wrong. Did I forget to change something else?

A. J. Raffles 19-06-2005 05:17 PM

OK, may be that was on mistake. Here's exactly what I wrote:

ipx=false

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount C C:\DOS\CDrive
mount E E:\ -t cdrom
C:
CLS

what's wrong?

There's still "Z>/:" shown in DOSBox and I can't change it.
What can I do?

The Fifth Horseman 01-07-2005 11:02 AM

What is "CLS" command doing there? Try removing that and see if it changes anything.

Gamefreak 01-07-2005 03:17 PM

CLS means as much as "Clear screen" and does exactly that, too. :)

Gamefreak 01-07-2005 03:22 PM

It seems by the way, that there's no such folder as C:\DOS\CDrive, else DosBox would change over to this folder then after typing in C:...
Maybe you need to mount a folder with another name?. :)

Olli 03-07-2005 10:28 AM

That's what the tutorial tells me. There' also mentioned "CLS" at the end.

I think I should give up. I try to get the game from somewhere else. May be that's easier...
Thanks for help!

A. J. Raffles 03-07-2005 10:37 AM

Well, but from what you're saying, the problem appears to be DOSBox, not the game itself, so getting the game elsewhere probably won't help you much. You don't happen to have an old DOS-computer somewhere by any chance?

Astral 03-07-2005 10:47 AM

Ok, do like this

opent the folder of the game where star trail is... drug and drop the game start exe on the dosbox icon on the desktop, if you don't have make one... my S. T. works this way and i dont have to print no codes :ok:

Olli 11-07-2005 01:24 PM

Hi! Thanks a lot!
Now it works! And so easy!
Is there a way to start the programm in fullscreenmode? the window is a little bit small..

The Fifth Horseman 11-07-2005 03:43 PM

Open Dosbox.conf and you'll quickly notice fullfixed and something called fullresolution or something like that (it's next line after fullfixed, I think). Fullfixed=false should be changed to fullfixed=true, and the other to 640x480.

A. J. Raffles 11-07-2005 03:59 PM

Alt + Enter (or was it Return?) also works.

Ludomeister 20-07-2005 01:24 AM

I'm playing RoA 3: Shadows over Riva right now, but this is the only forum I've found that is addressing this series of games. And since Riva is a refined version of the Star Trail engine, I'm hoping that my questions are directly relevant to players of both games. Most RPG forums where this topic is mentioned simply draw a "huh?!?"

At any rate, there are some play issues that the manual really doesn't address.

1. When one of your magicians does the wand ritual, it drains a *lot* of his or her AP's. The only way I know of to gain those back is simply to sleep for several days. You can also cast a healing spell on the magician, Rest the Body, Rest the Mind, so that the magician accumulates the AP's quicker, but still you *do* have to sleep it off. That said, is there any penalty for not getting on with the game as quickly as possible? Can you spend days just exploring the town, calling on every residence in the hope of getting that important clue (or an NPC), with impunity?

2. The manual also states that magicians get "house spell" bonuses, which are typically +2-3. But it doesn't state what the plus is! Is it the "to hit" roll? Damage? Reduced Astral Point cost?

This game is, believe it or not, the first RPG I've played since my pen-and-paper days back in the early 1980's. I got the game based on Tom's rave review herein, and also here: http://www.geocities.com/ataniel/arkreview.htm

I kinda like the way the engine is *not* capable of showing everything the way a modern game would, as the text that pops up when something occurs is very similar to having the DM describe things to you. Makes for an atmospheric game. And the music is beautiful and already I can see that the story is going to be quite involved, which to me is the main reason for playing an RPG. If it's just hack 'n slash, I'd rather play a good wargame. Enough rambling.

Thanks for your thoughts!

You are absolutely right about 14,000 being about the max cycles you can use with Riva on DosBox. (I'm using DosBox 6.3 with the D-Fend front end.) Just to get it to 14,000 I had to bump the frameskip to 2.

Unfortunately, however, you can't use the dynamic core to boost your framerate. At least on my rig with 0.63, the cpu core had to be normal for the game to even work. Now the game is indeed playable using the above configuration, but it's a little slow and choppy in the 3D world (which, btw, is quite a bit better than the one in Star Trail).

So don't use DosBox, use VDMSound instead! Using VDMSound the game plays perfectly smoothly in WinXP.

Thanks for having this here!
I'm currently considering buying it...again.... :kosta:

But...
The version downloaded is behaving strangely.

In (any) combat, after a handful (10?) of turns, the graphics just get totally messed up (hard to describe, but kinda like the computer was too fast or something, everything except the checkered 'board'/floor dissappers, and when I move my mouse, bits and pieces are drawn again, etc etc....)

Anyway, when I somehow manage to give the controls to the computer/autofight the fight finally ends, after some partially invisible fighting. BUT, afterwards we all die - even if we won the fight(!), sometimes one is left alone, but im unable to do anything but wait for him to die too, and then game ends.....

Believing my computer was too fast or some strange RAM problem I tried on other machines:
-My current celeron 566, win98 - no go, no matter what setup I use in-game or on shortcut
-A Pentium-200, also win98 - same happens.
- and the final letdown, a Pentium100 PURE DOS with all the legacy hardware, which I KNOW this game has worked on before (sold it....) - NO GO......

So, a reasonable question would then be - is this 'release' bugged ???
I've only installed, and then 'cracked' it. Don't remember if 'patched' (patch.exe)...

I'm NOT using Dosbox, BTW, but that shouldn't matter ? I get sound, normal gameplay etc in win98 (and DOS is DOS, right ?), only fighting gets *meep*d up...

ullteppe 05-08-2005 04:42 AM

.... :tomato: ...guess who feels a bit daft right now....

After some finer reading of the previous posts (11 pages), there's a tip about 'fix.com' programme, which is enclosed with the download....

Testing this (extracting from the zip/rar-file) and running in the installed program folder, everything is fine and dandy !!! No more garbled battles !

oh well, read/try before u buy.....

granted, I first tried finding alternate version for a while, and just happened to start reading this topic from scratch, just in case I'd missed something (LOL)

I'm like SO stuck in Shadowes Over Riva... can someone help me?

MrBackAlleySka 27-08-2005 02:31 PM

Shadows Over Riva huh? Hehe, lucky. That game is so rare to find.... I have been looking in stores forever. (EB, Gamestop, Funcoland, those things) Did you buy it? Or is it abandonware? If so, where did you download it? If it's not abandonware, Please don't send it to me. I love the screenshots, and I been dieing to play Shadows Over Riva. But i'll buy if need be.

Ju...! 27-08-2005 02:55 PM

Plz help! I've just downloaded this game and try it with Dosbox.
But whenever I take an action in battle mode even talk to anyone in town my screen always turns in to pinky blur screen!
Although the game is still running but I can't play with the pinky screen. I don't know what cause and how to resolve this, please help!

The Fifth Horseman 29-08-2005 11:24 AM

Redownload and see if it will work properly then.

Galahad 20-09-2005 10:08 PM

Hey guys thank you for uploading my for years most favoured game...Played it back in 1996 (or something alike) when it came out in the very first Gold Games Collection (the German version of it : Sternenschweif).I also play Realms of Arkania (Das Schwarze Auge (DSA))the Pen and Paper game so Im double thankful...I would play with my own version but it doesnt work anymore(not even in dos box)...Your version does however the movement is cruicial...I saw that was mentioned before but there was no real answer to that Problem...I really love the game and I would more then like to play it again but it takes 5 seconds to move 1 space...and its really a difficult task to move where you want to for you usually turn a piece too far etc. Do you have ANY ideas how to fix that?PPPPLLEEEEEEEAESE ;-)

Thanks in advance and thanks again for uploading this great game!

Tom Henrik 20-09-2005 10:59 PM

I have the same copy of Sternenschweif and it works flawless in DOSBox here.

As for the copy on the site, yup it is buggy in the movement unfortnately. Nothing we can do about that :(

Galahad 21-09-2005 09:50 AM

It says "Drive I: is no CD-Drive"
Thats the error message I get when i play it (attempt to play it) with DosBox

AggieSwann05 12-10-2005 07:21 PM

Hi guys and gals,

I'm so excited to have found this game! It was my favorite when I was a kid, but I've gotten stuck on a really dumb part and I wondered if anyone could help me out. I'm at the Finsterkomm pit, and I have the Golden Key and everything, but I can't figure out how to use it at the door. I've tried putting it in my lead characters hand, and on a key ring, and a bunch of other things, but everytime I get close to the door it just gives the options of 1)breaking it down 2)picking the lock 3)cast foraman. So I don't know what to do, I'm sure its something simple, so simple that its not mentioned in the stratedgy guides, but if you could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

couldnt u give the tip that u can enter what u want when saving under the review? would have saved me some time ;)

Guest 13-10-2005 01:12 PM

hmmm i get graphic errors during combat. after 5rounds or so
i can only see the ground...

Guest 23-10-2005 08:10 PM

I actually haven't figured out how to apply the patch to keep those kiddie faces out of my imported blade of destiny games
any ideas?

Guest 18-11-2005 05:53 AM

Wow I'm glad I found this game. It has been a while since I've seen it. I got to see Star Trail as the original german version when my high school buddy worked at Sir-Tech. I got to hang around the office with him and check out all the new games before they reached the shelves. To bad Sir-Teck sold out to WoC...no more Wizardry games....He also wrote the complete walkthrough book for it. I still have the copy he gave me. If I can find it I will try to scan it in if you guys at abandonia want to post it.

Jemuzu 01-12-2005 03:02 AM

I am thuroughly impressed by this game, but I'm not used to these old games and am wondering how to revive dead comrades or if it's even possible at the start...

My Dwarf's DEAD!!

Chris 01-12-2005 06:26 AM

oh, I don't beleive you can resurrect anybody. the rules were quite strict in this point.

Gamefreak 01-12-2005 06:49 AM

If remember correctly, you can resurrect dead party members at the temples, but not all temples, I think. It's long time now since I played the trilogy, but I think it's the temples of Tsa and Boron. Well, if I'm wrong and you can't resurrect them, you can import new characters in your party everytime, just create them at one of the temple. Of course, losing a high-level advanced character is a bad thing, especially since high-level character don't die so easily. But there are some places in the game... :sneaky:

erika 08-12-2005 09:44 PM

yeah- pray at the temples and give some money to the gods...heck, its handy even if you don't have a dead person. how many free meals have it gotten offa trivia? lots! once you e spent alot of money at the temples they will grant miracles pretty often. some gods can even fix broken weapons!

Erika 08-12-2005 10:37 PM

Alright-I would like to ask the same question that has been going on throughout this forum: how do I get this game to work?

I am using DOSbox, and i was able to get Blade of Desitiny to work, but for the life of my, this one i can't. I extracted the downloaded files to a folder (c:/star) and this included the crack and the patch. in dosbox this is as far as I get

z:>mount c c:/star

z:> c:

c:> crack.com

error! unable to locate patch!

Well, I have the patch-and frankly it looks like all i have are patches and such. looking at the files i downloaded it does not look like the game is there-there isn't a star.exe (i see a star.fn-but it won't open)...so how do i get this crack to function? The wording on the website here that says "To play the game, install it to a different folder, then copy the Crack file into the new folder. After running the crack the game will work. "

well, by installing it should i run the instalation program (i don't think i had to do that for Blade)? it tells me to insert a disk into A: or B: drive-and i get stuck there...so...simply put can someone write out a clear, step by step method of opening this little devil? (example command promps would be helpful.) thanks.

-e

Gamefreak 09-12-2005 05:12 AM

Hmm, you're right, there's no star.exe or any other executable that would look anything close like starting the game. Guess the game was uploaded without the admins checking them. Try on other sites, like Abandoneer, there the archive contains star.exe and anything the game needs, unlike here.

The Fifth Horseman 09-12-2005 11:38 AM

I'm pretty sure we have a correct archive here, checking....

Odd.

I am pretty sure people here have managed to get this game to run.
And Gamefreak, it was actually ONE OF THE ADMINS THEMSELVES who has supplied and reviewed the game. Kind of doubtful he would upload a faulty one.
Checking it in more detail...

Oookay. Got it running.

1. Unpack the files to a temporary directory somwhere on your HDD. Something like C:\Tmp. The path must NOT contain directory names longer then 8 characters or it will simply not work.
2. Run Install.exe
3. Choose destination directory and drive - must NOT be the same as current directory, and must NOT contain directory names longer then 8 characters.
4. Wait for the game to install. You can now delete the directory where you unpacked the installation files.
5. Copy the Crack.com and Fix.com to the directory where you installed the game. Run them.
6. Run Star.exe and enjoy the game.

gibberish 21-12-2005 12:54 AM

Anybody else get extremely sluggish mouse movement? I mean the cursor moves like 2cm / second or even worse. Totally unplayable. It runs the same weird way in both DosBox and with WDM. Both start fine and seem to have no other problems except this very weird sluggish mouse.

- gibberish

Gamefreak 21-12-2005 07:31 AM

Did you try to increase the emulation speed, or the cycles through CTRL+F12?

gibberish 22-12-2005 01:47 AM

Yes, I've tried that. I get same problem in dosbox AND when running it straight from windows. Could be that the problem is this rather slow laptop (1Ghz P3 with only 128mb RAM).

- gibberish

Gamefreak 22-12-2005 07:22 AM

Oh yes, 1Ghz is little too little for DosBox, the emulation would only be fast enough for less demanding games like Tetris or Wolfenstein 3D or similar. Try it on a 2.5Ghz machine and your mouse problem will go ;)

PandaPower 23-01-2006 07:09 PM

Hi!

Can anybody to say how I can to start Star Trail with my party of Blade of Destiny with the original faces?
It will be great to continue the story with the characters that saved Thorwal in Blade of Destiny.

Thanks, bye.

Gamefreak 23-01-2006 07:37 PM

Copy the savegame from the folder of Blade of Destiny to the folder of Star Trail and then open the savegame in Star Trail. It will then convert automatically to the Star Trail format and the party members will be taken over, without all skills and stats and almost all items, but not all. For example you won't be able to keep the Blade of Destiny.

Guest 27-01-2006 01:44 AM

There is also a speech pack for this game (I have it and the game somewhere on diskettes). Used to play this game like crazy.=)
IIRCyou could use bardskills and seduction to get money in taverns by entertaining the guests.

Gamefreak 27-01-2006 04:01 PM

And stealing to get money. In all three cases worthwhile to save though, if your performation isn't appreciated by the locals (low skills) you'll get either kicked out or in case of stealing might even need to pay large sum to escape being imprisoned for some time (bad for health if I remember right).

Bart 31-01-2006 08:08 AM

About the graphics glitch when using magic (changing into random colors:
I had the same problem, but it was rather easily overcome by changing the graphics display options in dosbox. For me, this glitch stopped to happen once I switched from scaler normalx2 to one of the other scalers (look in the dosbox.conf to change).

However, I ran into another problem: after fighting a while, suddenly somthing goes wrong with display: I can only see the grid, characters and scenery have disappeared. Strangely enough, they do appear again when using some other menu options, but as soon as I go back to the action menu, I can not see anything.

Did anyone find a solution to this second problem? Changing parameters in dosbox did not work thus far.

Gamefreak 31-01-2006 10:57 AM

This problem with only the battlefield without characters, enemies & background I had earlier too when I played Star Trail on old Pentium 100 with Dos. The only solution I found for this was just to load the saved game before the fight and enter the fight again, then anything is there again. That seems just to be a bug in the game that happens sometimes.
Although this with the graphics glitch in DosBox, I don't have it whether I cast spells or something else during battles. Instead I have this glitch in the conversations, when I enter one the colors mess up and then anything is hardly visible. That said, I play the original bought German version of the game on CD, not the one from this site. I'll try your solution with the scaler, thanks for the tip

Bart 31-01-2006 07:11 PM

So after getting rid of the random-colors problem,
I think I found the solution for the scrambling of sprites during combat.

Search the package for a file named "fix.com"
Place it in the game directory, and run it.
That did the trick, at least for me.... :tomato:

So finally I can start off and play this great game!
:Brain:

Guest 31-01-2006 07:21 PM

Hey, I just discovered that fifth horsman actualy already told to use the fix.com in hit post on Dec 9 2005, 12:38 PM.

@Henrik: Perhaps it should be put in the RoA-ST game description that not only crack.com should be run but also fix.com?
Would save a lot of people quite some unneccessary frustrations, I guess.
THnx anyway, Abandonia, for providing this beauty.

uk_john2005 08-02-2006 06:11 PM

What amazes me, in these days of broadband, I do not understand why we do not have on games like this one the floppy version download (which is the one here) AND the CD version with speech. Yes, the latter would be a 200+mb download, but even on a 256k broadband that is managable. If you only have dialup the 11mb floppy is a sizable download in it's own right, so you'd be happy with that anyway.

I have the same problem with the original Jagged Alliance. Every site just has the floppy version for download with no speech, and yet the reviews of the same game (even on the same site!) they always talk about the great speech in the game in the review.

Abandonia, how about you being the first site that offers the floppy AND the CD version (where different) on games like Star Trail and Jagged Alliance?

Well there a little matter of server space and server cost. If we'd start putting up 200MB downloads the serves space would be filled up in an instant.

So the sizes of download are not to ensure you could download quickly, but to ensure we don't run out of space too soon. The general policy is - no updates bigger then 100MB and even those are extremely rare (anything bigger then 50MB should get special confirmation by the site's owner).

uk_john2005 08-02-2006 10:34 PM

That's a cop out. There are just not enough games like that out there, where the floppy version is there, but the CD one isn't. And the reason I said why not be the first, was because nearly all the games on this site are available elsewhere and links are available, so to say "we have the CD version of this, but due to server space there are some other games we might not have, but we are confident 100 other sites have it for download" would be an easy step. It would also be possible. I am sure. to take a few of the less downloaded games off for 6 months while the CD version was up, and then see how the server changes. Was the 200mb causing more problems than the lesser downloaded games were doing? Was it a big difference? The other point is I am guessing at 200mb. It might be under 100mb. Plenty of older CD games with speech are under 100mb, even while some are 300mb.

Underdogs makes big files available from them but through bitorrent. Some sites break down a big download in to smaller indivual downloads, a) to make it easier for people with slower connections, but also B) as it spreads the server workload.

And while I might be able to find Star Trail on ebay or somewhere, I have been looking for the original CD version of Jagged Alliance for 3 years now and ever since the release of Jagged Alliance 2, it has fallen off the face of the Earth!

I am much more interested when I hear "we tried that, but it didn't work", but in the world today I am getting a little fed up with "haven't tried it, but I am sure it wouldn't work".

Gamefreak 09-02-2006 07:20 AM

Well, you could propose that to Kosta, he's the owner of the side eventhough he doesn't seem to do much here.

It's like telling one store - be the first to have this really expensive junk and get rid of everything else. If people come for other stuff you can send them to other stores, you'll still have that one big piece to sell to people who're interested.

Why on Earth should we take games down, just so we could have one or two large files??? Doesn't make sense.

If you simply want the full version - get it. We don't have it on the site and you obviously know many other sites (you even mentioned a few), so talk to them.

The Fifth Horseman 10-02-2006 05:30 PM

Heck, if you have broadband - install eMule and search for Star Trail in the Kademlia network.
Easy way to get large - and often also rare - stuff.

Gamefreak 10-02-2006 05:36 PM

That's warez-talking.

The Fifth Horseman 10-02-2006 07:04 PM

If it was, I'd been banned a long time ago.

It's only been yesterday when I have obtained the CD version of Flashback through the network - and that one isn't so popular, oh no.

Guest3 01-03-2006 09:55 PM

Hello all. I've also been having problems getting this game to run. But i think i've fixed it now following some of the suggestions here.

Anyway as a longtime fan of the first game in the series(oh those amiga days :) ) i was very happy to find this here after spending years trying to find an origonal copy(which i'll still search for). So thanks to the guys here for hosting it :ok:

Anyway looking at the many posts about memmory error messages that people were getting, and having the same errors whenever i launched 'star.exe', i thought i'd provide some more help on that subject.

I guess this might be useful for non-XP(and non DOSBOX) users like myself.

After killing my computer for a short while after messing around with my Config.sys and Autoexec files trying to resolve the memmory error messages, i did finaly manage to find the EATXMS.EXE file that had been discussed here.

You can find it on this site, along with lots of usefull info on running old games:

http://www.oldskool.org/guides/oldonnew/resources

the way i resolved the problem was to use a boot-disk(the one available on this site in the utilities section worked fine for the experiment) then after booting with that disk i went into the EATXMS folder in DOS and typed:

eatxms 32000

followed by enter, which lost me 32MB of my memmory, which in turn enabled me to launch the game from its folder by typing:

star

followed by enter.

The PC i was running it on is a P166 with 48MB ram and win98se(my 'old game' pc).

the command 'eatxms 32000' made sure i was running around the 16MB memmory limit the game needs to run and will need to be adjusted depending on the ammount of memmory you may have in your machine.

e.g If you have 128MB of memmory you would use 'eatxms 112000' (112,000KB)or something like that, you may have to experiment untill you see the title screen.

Now the next issue i have is trying to work out why i seem to start 15-20 days into the game, with no clear option to re-start from the begining of the game with my own characters.

Anyway i hope this helps some of the people trying to run this game that were having the annoying:

'Star-Trail needs xxxxxxxx ammount of EMS+XMS memmory, and you only have xxxxxxxxxxxx(a bigger number!) available'

type error messages.

In the meantime i'm starting out in the first game in the series(which has all the music and seems to be the full game - excellent!).

Must be a saved game that was there that loads everytime you start the game. Whenever you save a game in all three games of the trilogy, there's automatically saved a game which can't be loaded from the loading menu, called lastgame. (that's right, without 3-letter ending). It's still a normal savegame, you can try and rename it to xxx.gam (xxx for whatever name you choose) and then load, it will be loaded. It's there for immediately loading automatically when the game starts.
All you need to do is to save a game on your own and the lastgame. will be modified to load your game everytime. And when not, remove the write-only attribute from it (right-click...), then save your game.

Guest 05-03-2006 03:57 AM

erhh... when i start the game it loads some old savefile automaticliy...how do i start another party/ start over?

Gamefreak 05-03-2006 06:32 AM

Add already existing characters into your party, or if there're none create some yourself. It's anyway adviseable to create own characters than to add the pre-created ones that are automatically there, you can make your characters what you like them to be and they can also be better with some time taken to generate good stats for them.

Gamefreak 05-03-2006 06:35 AM

Oh, sorry, and for starting a new game - click on the disk icon to load or save a game, and choose New Game there. That should do it if I remember correctly. If not, just delete the file lastgame. in the Games-folder and you will start over when you start the game.

punch999 05-03-2006 07:09 AM

(For instance the Nintendo Emulator uses the F5 key).

ya ive been having this problem too  and it really makes the game hard to play or get anywhere without leaveing the computer on forever , does anyone have ANY way to save the game?

Gamefreak 14-03-2006 01:17 PM

Yes, I have one - play the game from a bought CD instead of a downloaded version. Save-possibility guaranteed plus speech in the game and nice CD quality music :D

The Fifth Horseman 14-03-2006 02:11 PM

Have you checked if Read Only attribute is on any of the game files? Disable it.
See if that changes anything.

Also, there is no saving of emulator state in DosBox, simply because it is much more complicated then console emulators.

Nickqw 14-03-2006 08:41 PM

No theres no read-only attributes on any of the game files.. is there any way i can download a manual that shows the real pages , because the one off of this site isnt the real one so it doesnt work. thanks for the help tho.

Hello!
First of all I`d like to thank Abandonia for bringing such great old games. You guys realy rule! :ok:
Could anyone tell me, please, how to get rid of those silly babyfaces that appear after importing my party from BoD? :help:
Also I`d like to know, where to find that myterious "FIX.COM" file you were talkin about...? It`s not in the package I downloaded! Could someone give me a link, where to get it?
Thank you very much for help!!! :bye:

The Fifth Horseman 15-03-2006 05:20 PM

The "baby faces problem" has been issued a number of times. Check the earlier posts in this thread, and run a search inside Troubleshooting forum. There should be a solution posted somwhere.

"Fix.com" is not needed for the version of the game that is currently for download.

In the troubleshooting section there`s only something like "if you know, how to use hex editor..." ...which I don`t  Is there any other way to solve this?
And the next complication I discovered is that the game runs in the novice mode only. Without those extra skills the game loses half of its magic. I can no longer make a quick-fingered lockpicking shadow of my dwarf and my witch can no longer improve her seducing and dancing skills etc. Its a pitty!
Pleeeease help, I can`t stand waiting for new adventures any longer :kosta:

Gamefreak 16-03-2006 09:27 AM

Are you living in Germany? I could send you a German version of Star Trail that's around 20-30MB which doesn't have any problems to run, neither baby-faces nor saving a game.
As for the changing from Novice to Expert mode, press F3 and change from Novice to Expert mode, you can change other options there as well. Be sure to save the game after so that the settings will be saved for current game.

The Fifth Horseman 16-03-2006 03:56 PM

Hex editors are not that hard to operate, trust me. Once you get the basic idea, it's as easy - nay, easier - as breathing.

Google around for "Hex Workshop", it's a decent one.

The Fifth Horseman 28-03-2006 05:10 PM

either you are not using DosBox (but you think you are doing that), or you've f***ed up the config file.

And stop your tyranny over the SHIFT key. ALLCAPS won't get you anywhere.

sorry apocalypse dude y realy sorry but would you tell me what to do instead of just sayng something? please

Gamefreak 29-03-2006 07:19 AM

Search for the following line in dosbox.conf:

[dos]
# xms -- Enable XMS support.
# ems -- Enable EMS support.

Change there ems=true to ems=false and see if that helps. Also search for memsize=XX (whatever memory amount is set in yours) just in the beginning and change it to memsize=16. Might help also.

Would you maybe try running DosBox and then the game first? Because what you described sounds like you tried running the game directly from XP.

Then, if trying with the possible combination of EMS/XMS (both disabled, one disabled, both enabled) yields no result, try running the setup file that should be sitting somwhere in the game directory. If I remember right, there was an option on expanded memory usage.

Gamefreak, I remember Star Trail running on an 8 meg machine smoothly.

Guest 29-03-2006 04:03 PM

ohhh thanks to you all , tank you very much i will try that :D

Guest 29-03-2006 04:29 PM

well ... yes i've tried to run the game directly from windows ( 98 SE, by the way)
but i have that problem with most of the games in abandonia , i just actualy can play "constuctor" whic is hard , ands "settlers 2"... but then i realize than does dosbox exist , so i tried it then i had a trouble whit the "rendering output" ... my dosbox closes after i could see it ... well i fixed that, it stands in the monitor , but just useless.. and it stills useless . To describe it , it is like this:

i have two windows the diagnostic and the black one (in wich i suposse to could write) but i can't there's just a black arrow in the "writeable" window and i clik it , i push the letters triyng to write but nothing hapends .... that's my situation

i've tried too, all the options for the output.

and sorry for all the missunderstandings

98SE?
Then DOSBox/VDMSound are not an option - and you don't need them either.

These two topics should help.
How to configure DOS for gaming
Win98 - Memory
Another option is to use Abandonia's bootdisk.

Guest 01-04-2006 06:52 PM

i need to generate 6 characters or could ii star just whit one??

kmonster 01-04-2006 10:55 PM

You can try to play with one character, but I doubt that you would survive the first battle.

The game was created with 6 character parties in mind. It will get far more difficult with smaller parties.
The faster levelling won't help much. A 3-character party with double XP will stand no chance against a 6 character party. The game will be even slower with smaller parties since your battles will last longer.

So I recommend to start with 6 characters, take at least a mage, warrior, dwarf and ice elf.

Guest 02-04-2006 04:50 AM

thanks monster ?

Guest 02-04-2006 04:51 AM

yhea you are right , with one character i couldn't survive one night in the
enviroment

Guest 05-04-2006 10:53 AM

Hi, apologies if this has already been mentioned, but it seems there is already a pre-existing save file when you download the game. I had to delete the "lastgame" within the games file before I was able to watch the intro and make my own chars.

Wow, I must say that I have throughly enjoyed this site in the last two weeks or so that I've been comming here. Very Very Nice.

I found the link here, because of what happed to HOTU, and it's nice that I found news about HOTU here.

HOTU is of course my favorite site, and I link to it in my webpage.

I have just finished playing some Cresent Hawks and Arena. I remember this one from way back, but was too complicated for me then. (kinda like the first time I read a complicated book) Giving the game a try after 12 years is nice. I've gotten much farther than I did back then.

The only problem I've had with the game so far as far as bugs are concerned. I noticed some wierd palette effects when my elf casts a lightnig bolt spell. I figure maybe the fix is to run in 256 colors, or something.

Guest 01-05-2006 09:17 AM

Im having that Battlefield without characters bug aswell just a bit more intense...The first few rounds are normal, then the characters are wiped off the battlefield and will sometimes pop up for a short while when doing certain things but you are unable to move, to attack or anything else. When I tell the computer to automatically simulate the battle some more weird bugs appear:

Im not sure how the Experience part is covered in the english version but in the Pen and Paper version of this its level 2 = 100 exp, level 3 = 300 exp, level 4 = 600 etc. Now usually after the priestess tells you she will share some Experience with you, you will pop up to level 3 gaining 300 Exp, however, I gained 17k Exp, still only hopping to level 3. This may or may not be a bug, Im not sure.

Now it becomes funny. I did my usual increasements everything fine (just al ittle unlucky but oh well). Right after doing all theese changes 5 out of my 6 Characters just die. The 6th (a dwarf) survived with a crushing 9/9 Hitpoints. The others have 0/4 or 0/9 Hitpoints (while even during the level up they had 30/40 for example). After spending 1 Night (because I couldnt move and I jsut wanted to see what would happen) my dwarf also died.

I reloaded my old savegame and tried again...nearly exactly the same thing happened: Battlefield without Characters after the first couple of turns, but this time, ALL Party members died after the level up!

Now you guys said I should run fix.com, however Im somehow too stupid to find it. I found fx.something 2 times but not fx.com for that matter and certainly no fix.com.

Can you please tell me where that file should be or where else I could find it or if there is any other solution to this problem?

Thanks in advance.

No, you don't need a crack with this version.

Is your problem with downloading the game, unpacking it or running? Your post wasn't too specific.

Also, try running it in DOS... some games just aren't compatibile with Windows.

Quote:

Look above. The version up on Abandonia doesn't need a crack to run - and as far as I remember, this copy ran perfectly on my DOS system.

Oh no!! Star trail seems to crash right after you exit the Temple of Phex in Tiefhusen! Have any of you experienced the same problem?
I came across this problem when playing the german version with DosBox. I'm not exactly sure why there is an error, but here's my solution: IT was caused by the mous. The moment i moved the mouse the game crashed. The solution is to cut off the mouse just for this little scene, play it and save it right after leaving the temple using your keyboard. After that you can start the game again and use the mouse again, at least that's how I solved this little problem in the german version.

First a big THANKS to this site, I've downloaded and played many games for hours or even weeks since I found this site.

I've got the same problem as mentioned in the quote. I also tried the solution with the mouse. The problem is I have no idea how to save with keyboard. You can get the save dialog while pressing F7 or Ctrl+D. But I don't know how to navigate there. Tab doesn't work, neither does pressing Ctrl+S or anything else. The only things I can do there is scrolling up and down through my savegames by cursor keys and hit Enter (Return) to load the game...

If the guy in the quote is right, he managed to save the game. Can anybody else try to figure out how? I'm totally dispaired by now because I guess I already tried every combination of keys...

I also changed my mice ( I use a PS/2-Mouse, tried an old serial one on COM1 and also a newer USB-Mouse) but there the game also crashes. Doesn't matter if I try this (the English) version or the German one...

Have anyone played Realms Of Arkania - Shadows over the riva?
It's technically better than first and second ,but it's easier...

kmonster 25-05-2006 10:33 PM

I played it with an imported high level party from Star Trail.
The battles weren't easier (at least at normal level) but the storyline was.

Lich 04-06-2006 05:58 AM

1. Before my favourite cRPGs was Ishar and Eye of the Beholder trilogy. I tryed play Realms of Arkania and start from Blade of Destiny but i dont understand this game. Now i decided learn how run and play Star Trail and i must say its probably best cRPG trilogy. Many details is olways welcome, Baldurs Gate is simple hack&slash compare to it.

2. My team is three warriors (because olways or mostly you will be put into close combat, enemy quickly surround) two silvian elves (second line in battle- hit from arrows and speed spells, anyway they got best stats, i got one person with mostly 12 and 13 stats!) and one battle mage.

3. Probably best skill to learn is thread wounds, i found it most usefull in every team member (also haggle but that skill may have one person)

4. Question: it is possible to take some money or equipment from defeated opponents? I finish some battles with nice equipped orcs and i wonder if i could take his swords and armours.

5. My first travell on worldmap was off-road trough wilderness. I go little west then south and cross river, go on south and i encounter elvish village called "salamanderstones" or something. There was woman which tells me that they have salamander stones here !! but allow to enter only elves (human and dwarves make some troubles before) So maybe it is possible to get that item very quick using elves team! Anyway using elves team should be possible to enter some teritories guard by elf patrols. And team made only from silvian elves should have best stats. Someday i must try it.

kmonster 04-06-2006 02:44 PM

@Lich:

2. Better replace one warrior with a dwarf. Warriors get -2 magic resistance penalty while dwarves get 10 extra hitpoints. Since dwarfs can wear the same armor as warriors they are better tanks. There a also dwarf specific situations you will miss without a dwarf in your party. Dwarves can also get good at lockpicking faster.

You only need one wilderness leader. I'd also replace one silven elf with an ice elf. They get 5 extra HP and +1 magic resistance.

My party had 13 in all positive stats. Take your time to roll the characters manually, you can raise nearly all negative stats without facing negative consequences to reach 13 in the important positive stats.
Dexterity and charisma is useless for combat, strength is more important than all other stats together.

4. After combat the items you can loot are diplayed (if there are any), among the money you got. You don't always get something.

5. You can always part your party and have just the elves proceed. Spellcasters can use a spell (there are at least 3 different ones) to sneak by unnoticed.
It's not too difficult to get 13 in all stats for any class if you roll manually.

unfortunately clicking on the disk icon reveals no such button to start a new game. the "new" button there
refers to saving a new game... :(
and btw if u get rid of ur party and create new members they appear at a place called kvirasim at the temple of peraine but i have no idea where that is!

can anyone help?
has anyone got a save game in the starting city of kvirasim? can u post it on the forum? help!

Scatty 18-06-2006 09:34 AM

Ok sorry, I gave a wrong information. I forgot that this game didn't have this option available yet like the newer games :P
You can start a new game when you into the sub-folder of where the game is located named games (i.e. c:\trail\games) and delete all games and remaining files in it. Then, when you start the game, you'll be asked for the difficulty level you prefer, and begin in the temple of Peraine in Kvirasim where you can create new characters, save them and import them into your party. Also when you get rid of party members you can then find them in this temple (might be a long way to this town from where you are later in the game, though).

you are a true star in the heavens mate, it works GREAT :) cant wait to get stuck in when i get back from shopping with my girlfriend. and hopefully my baby daughter stops crying too LOL but thats just RL probs LOL
why do people make cracks? i understand cracks to alleviate copy protection (LOL) but not cheating ones! they suck. the idea of a game is to be a bit hard so you enjoy it more when u finally overcome a problem :)
at least thats what i think :kosta:

ive donated 10 euros to this site coz it ROCKS and frontier elite rocks too :) man they dont make games like this anymore......pity

keep the forums alive guys :max:

The Fifth Horseman 20-06-2006 10:54 AM

Actually, I think you can recruit characters in any temple.

Scatty 20-06-2006 05:43 PM

If you create new ones in a temple, yes, but the ones you dismiss from the party will always land in that temple in Kvirasim. Which should be considered before dismissing already existing party members (why ever one would wand to dismiss them and/or replace with another one).

The Fifth Horseman 21-06-2006 10:10 AM

I remember that when I was playing, a character dismissed in any temple stayed at the temple (s)he was left in.

Guest 14-07-2006 02:16 PM

Please, I need help. I stucked in the Dwarfen Mines Finsterkamm. There are 5 or 6 red plates on the floor. I can´t pass them, all my charakters died.

The Fifth Horseman 14-07-2006 02:42 PM

It's been a while, but I remember that there was a chest nearby with some special clothing... belts, I think?

Anyway, when worn, they will protect your characters from getting burned.

Scatty 14-07-2006 09:34 PM

There is a set of leather pants, boots and armors in the chest, exactly matching the number of members in your group. And you better save the game before walking on the red tiles and entering the room with the golem, there's namely a way to get the salamander stone AND the asthenil sword.
When you get the sword from the golem give it to one of the party members who has the highest exp, then split him from the party and let him walk back to the chest. After that change back to the rest of the party and get the salamander stone, the golem still asks for exchanging it for a deposit but nothing is taken from you (if not counting the stone medallion as the deposit that you already gave away anyway). Sometimes it still can happen that your party dies on the way back to the chest after that, so that's why you should have a savegame before entering the room with golem.

Hey...all new generated Chars will be at the Temple in kvi...the first town ^^
characters you leave behind at an temple will stay at exactly that temple

but my question is...how to configure the sound right ? i want sounds AND the cool music from the speech pack ^^ any suggestions for dosbox 0.65 ?

Guest_AngelusCordana_* 22-07-2006 08:50 PM

there is another nice bug ;)

But i won't tell ya how to get up to 60k Ducats in ingerimm's forge WITHOUT ruining the game ;)

The Fifth Horseman 25-07-2006 03:21 PM

My suggestion: Sound Blaster Pro 2 (or, if that won't work, Sound Blaster 16). Try that.

Guest 05-09-2006 09:28 AM

Hey there, I am having some kind of problem at the Netherswamps...
Iv slain the wizard and killed the witch but I cant open the chest...Iv also tried to open it before killing the wizard or the witch but it never worked. I also tried to take Asgan and the herbs without the Scroll in the chest but this didnt work because I couldnt acquire the herbs....Do I have to find something else in order to open the chest? Iv looked at several solutions because of this as to find out in which exact order I might have to try it but it never said I would be missing something or doing something wrong...

Thanks in advance

Scatty 05-09-2006 11:24 AM

When the wizard is slain by his own elemental he leaves few items behind. Among them the crystal ball that the witch wants. After you bring it to her and kill her, you should be in the end in possession of a scroll describing those green monkeys. When you have it, you should be able to open the chest. If you don't then I don't know, maybe you encountered a bug in the game.

Guest 05-09-2006 11:50 AM

Errm when I kill the witch the witch is dead and I dont gain anything...Or is that because I usually chose to let the Computer simulate the battle? But that really shouldnt be the reason or?Anyhows I just tested it...witch dead, chest closed...

Scatty 05-09-2006 12:51 PM

I think you get this scroll rather from the wizard, the witch doesn't leave anything behind. In any case you need this scroll to open the chest and get a net (to capture the guy), yet another scroll (I think) and a healing potion.
Btw., you're better off to combat the witch manually, as she might petrify one of your characters which wouldn't happen if you petrify or blind her first.

Guest 05-09-2006 02:51 PM

Well the Wizard does indeed drop a scroll...but that only tells me something about a picture with a heather or something...and even with it I cant open the chest...with or without having slain the witch...Thats why Im pretty confused...

Guest 06-09-2006 02:08 PM

I read the review but it didn't say what sort of combat system this game has. Is this turn based or real time? Thanks.

The Fifth Horseman 06-09-2006 02:53 PM

The combat system is turn based.

Of the little that I've played I find that this game is great! However, I can't play much because I can't save. I've read through the posts and I don't think anyone has this problem. There's no copy protection or anything, but rather the inability to save. Everytime I try to save, it says that I must create a game file, so I click on the "new" button and it asks if I want to save my game. I click on "yes", type in the name of my file, and....nothing happens. That's it. No new file, no save game. I hope someone can help me with this problem. I've played a bit of the game and I'm eager to give it a try as I'm a big fan of RPGs. By the way, I'm running WinXP and played the game on DOSBox. Every other aspect of the game seems to be fine, except for saving the game.

Guest 28-09-2006 07:54 AM

Try to mount not the folder of the game in DosBox, but the main drive, and then switch to the folder of the game manually via cd folder, for example cd c:/games/trail.
I had the same problem until I mounted the drive like above, and then I suddenly could save the game.

Help! I'm stuck at the dwarven pits. I've just emptied out the water part and lifted the trapdoor and went down. On the next level, however, there is a wall that can't passed. I've checked walkthroughs that tell me to take a set of leather and wear it all to pass, but there isn't any chest with any set of leathers. There are only 2 chest, and they both don't contain anything leather. One of the chest has FIVE of each of the following: shirt, pants, quilt armour, robe, winter coat. The other chest contains weapons. Oh, and I don't have any torches left :( Someone please help!

RPG fan 30-09-2006 03:23 PM

Oh there's another chest that I left out. The chest that contains the parchment that describes about having a set of clothes etc. However, in that chest, other than the parchment, there isn't any other leather. Just more weapons and girdles of might. Again, please help :(

Guest 30-09-2006 04:16 PM

The chest is just before the red plates, on the left. It has a set 7 parts of respectively leather armor, leather pants and leather boots. You can't miss it, it's just after you enter the door and before the red plates come. And you need to place all three parts from each party member back into the chest when you return from the golem hall, or the passage will remain blocked. No teleport out there.
Torches and the ignition box can be found on the first (blue-walled) level of the mines in one of the big halls, in the corners. You know it's the right hall when you begin to get messages of your party member's foot getting hurt but you won't get hurt. Just walk there to one of the corners and you'll be presented with a list of found items.

Huh? What red plates? There aren't any red plates. As soon as I go down the stairs from the watery level (after moving the trapdoor), there's only left or right. Going right is a one-way to a chest, which contains some weapons, stuff and girdles of might. Going left will lead me to a not-so-small room with 2 chest and "something from the ground" which I get some red coins, weapons, misc stuff etc. In one of those chest, there are FIVE shirts, pants, quilt armour, robe and winter coats. The other chest in that room contains weapons etc. Outside of this room, there is a door but it's just a wall behind that door. Further down the hall from there is the wall that I'm stuck at. Here's what it says when you approach the wall:

"I guess there was once a passage here, but it seems to have been bricked up. You take a closer look at this particular section of the wall and knock against it a couple of times for good measure as well."
"Whoever did this knew his job well. This piece of wall is solid. There's just no way for you to get through here with the means at your disposal".

When you say "first blue-walled" level of the mines, did you mean right at the start, when you first enter the pits? If it is, then I'm screwed :( I'd have to restart the whole mines :( Looks like I'll have to anyway, seeing as I don't see any red plates etc.

Vongoethe 02-10-2006 08:19 AM

I'm talking about the level with the yellow bricks. It seems you didn't find that one yet. You need to empty the huge water pool in the red-bricked level, but before you do that be sure to dive through it for long time until you find a magic water pouch with unlimited water supply. To empty the pool you need to approach and activate a wheel that's in one of the rooms, when you enter it you battle 7 (I think) undead dwarves and a zombie - be sure to pick up the stone amulet, it's very important later for the golem. Then just approach the wheel on the wall and the water pool will be drained. When you go to the pool there's a plate on the ground that you can lift only with a crowbar so you need to have one with you on one of the party members. Then you'll enter this yellow-bricked level. There's one door after which are the red plates that lie on the way. If you step on those without the special leather clothing on you'll be burned to death.

With the blue-bricked level I mean the one at the start, yes.

I'm exactly at where you described, except without the red bricks, because there really isn't any. I've had that big fight with those undead dwarves and a zombie and I've got the stone amulet. I've also got the magical waterskin and drained the water after that. I lifted the slab with a crowbar and went down the stairs to a yellow-bricked level, and that's where my description begins. A small level with a door that has a wall behind it, a room with 2 chest, a deadend with a chest, and a wall that can't be passed. No red plates anywhere in sight. Looks like I screwed up something somewhere. I'll have to restart the whole mines part again :( I've lost all of my torches anyway. Thanks very much anyway for the help. I apologise if I caused some frustration with so many request for help.

Vongoethe 02-10-2006 11:38 AM

Hey, wait a moment yet. Did you find such "leathery" parchment where it's described that you need to put the burning torch onto a seal with a hammer and anvil drawn on it? I'm not sure but I think you need to have this parchment in the inventory to pass on to the plates and the chest before them. Or maybe you didn't get some important key so you can't open this wall. Did you get the black ashen key in the top level of that chute? You get they key when you plunge into the chute on the first mine level when you enter and instead of going down through a menu question you go up. While you lose temporarily some charisma as you get dirty, you find a key and maybe a healing potion. Maybe you didn't get this key and it's important.

Oh? I've not been in the chute because I thought it was just another means of moving between levels. I'll go check out the chute then. By the way, I've got 2 keys till now.: a rich silver key and a copper key. That's all. I'll go check out the chute then. I hope it works. It'll suck to start all over again :(

RPG fan 03-10-2006 02:32 AM

Yup! I was missing the key from the chute. I can progress onwards now. Thanks for the help! :D I don't have to start over again! Yay!

RPG fan 03-10-2006 02:49 AM

Well I spoke too soon. I'll have to restart the whole mines again. I'm lacking a torch and thus can't get past the part right after the red plates on the floor. Thanks anyway for all the help.

Vongoethe 03-10-2006 06:54 AM

You'll just have to buy a torch off one of the shops in the Dwarven town, then return to the mines. Btw., if you don't want to return the golden key to the temple when you've finished the mines, you can leave through the chute and will land directly on the road off the town. Useful if you like to collect keys on the key ring :P

RPG fan 04-10-2006 02:24 AM

That's where the problem lies. I can't go back up to the town. In my excitement of being able to continue, I quickly saved my game when the key from the chute worked, not realising that the stairs going up disappeared. I can't leave that level anymore, and there's no access to the chute. In short, I screwed up :( I did find the alternate exit you mentioned, and I've just realised it's behind the "bricked-up wall" on the same level. Was wondering if it's possible to "destroy" the wall by some means. This game has so many tools, you'd think one of them works huh? :P Oh, one more question. How do I "brew" concoctions? I have an alchemy set, but I don't have any "recipes". I can't seem to use the alchemy talent. Thanks again for all the help :) I can see that you're quite a devoted RoA fan :)

Vongoethe 04-10-2006 06:24 AM

What do you mean, the stairs up disappeared? I never knew they disappear when you open the door before the red plates. You can't leave anymore only when you put the leather clothing on, that's when the exit from the red plates way closes until you put the clothing back. Did you try to put the leather clothing back in (just move into the chest)? There's no need to leave the mines through the chute, you can just leave the mines the usual way up to town.
About alchemy, the one party member with the highest skill in it needs to have following: scroll with the recipe, the necessary ingredients such as herbs and an alchemy apparatus. Then you need to rent a room in an inn but not rest, instead click on the hand icon for the special talents and select alchemy. After that select the recipe, and try to brew the potion. Might work, might not, it's random but the higher you alchemy skill the more sure it is that it works. Save before you try.

Hey you're right! I just put the leathers back and the door opened. I must've saved after taking a set of the leathers. Now I guess I can go back up and get a torch. Thanks for saving me from starting over. Wow, it's been many times that I thought I've to start over again. Pessimistic, eh? :P About the alchemy, there's no way to purchase any recipes, is there? Recipes have to be "found"? If I'm not mistaken, recipes can be written to books as well? Speaking of which, is there a "smithing" talent or something? When I talk to NPCs about smithing, they say things like "there's nothing you can teach me" or words to that effect.

Vongoethe 05-10-2006 08:09 AM

No, there's no such talent as smithing in the game. Alchemy recipes can be written down to book, yes, so you don't need to carry all the recipe scrolls around with you. I don't think you can purchase recipes anywhere, but if you played the first game in the trilogy, Blade of Destiny, you'll have already many good recipes along with you that you can then transfer to book in Star Trail.
Overall Star Trail contains many good unique items that you won't find in Star Trail but can find only in Blade of Destiny, such as the unbreakable two-handed sword, unbreakable short sword with improved attack stats or this strong axe (don't know the name in English) that's also unbreakable and has furiously increased damage but to the price of much weaker parade rating. That's why I always play the entire trilogy beginning with the first game whenever I'm about to play it once again. Blade of Destiny might be less attractive than Star Trail or Shadows over Riva but it's worth it, even if alone for the higher levels (char level 8-12) to start with in Star Trail.

RPG fan 11-10-2006 08:53 AM

Unfortunately, I dont have RoA 1 so I didn't get to play it. Star Trail is my first RoA game that I'm playing. Well, I don't have any recipes at the moment, so I guess I've not much need for a book. The only scrolls I've got are the Ingerimm one (parchment), the one about the order of anathemizer thing and 2 undeciphered scrolls from the salamander stone dungeon quest though. Not sure what it's for till now. If it's not of any more use I think I'll discard them. Taking up lots of inventory space :P I'm at Lowangen now and I'm stuck. I just got in and the salamander stone has been picked and I've no idea what to do now. I checked a walkthrough for help but I can't do what it says, because I can't find Dragan Escht (whoever he is) :( Probably did something wrong somewhere. I also had some pursuers chasing me just before I got to Lowangen but I didn't get attack by the time I reached Lowangen. Maybe it's got something to do with me being stuck?

Guest 11-10-2006 11:29 AM

The pursuers will be your pest all the time from now on when you're travelling on the area map, it has to do with you carrying the salamander stone. If you're not carrying it there're no pursuers, too.
As for Lowangen, here's a short, spare guide.

1. Go to the tavern Orkdeath (or whatever it's called in the English version of the game), drink or eat something one or few times until Gavron appears. You need to follow him quietly without attracting attention. You need at least one party member following him until he disappears in a house. Then gather the remaining party members that fell behind (there always fall some behind) at the door to this house, save, enter after a conversation and fight. Gather all equipment, some you would want to equip like armors and weapons, rest can be sold if not needed (much gold for selling stuff in Lowangen). Keep the salamander stone of course.
2. Rest and heal some time, then go to southern part of the town. One spot east (on the map) and 3 spots south of the tavern At the Moat (I suppose it's called so, at least it's name is something with water and hole) is a house. Save, enter and immediately after the conversation follow into the house, "falling with the door inside". Fight, gather stuff, equip and keep what you need, keep the fake salamander stone and sell the rest.
3. Go over the bridge to the northwest part of the town, look on the western wall for a high white house beside a well. Ask Ragan about three things (that's the limit you have), accomplishing a favor for each of them before he helps you. My recommendation is like that:
Where to Eat/Drink. Go to a house, 2 spots west and 3 spots north of a hostel/harborage Sweltje Palace, save and talk to Vinsalter. Choose always the 3rd answer, with some luck (it's random) convince him to come with you to Ragan. If you fail, reload and try again. Ragan tells you can now buy all kind of things at the southern-most of the town, house at the wall, using his name as entry card.
Where to get weapons. Get him a brooch at the Show-house of Arts in the north-east, but do it at night after 12am. Save before you do, you might get caught and arrested (you don't want that to happen, some items will get lost forever). Back at Ragan he tells you can buy weapons, armor and all such stuff at a house 3 spots north of a tavern Klonballas.
Ask about travelling / how to leave the town. Deliver a package for him, but you'll be told Deregorn isn't where Ragan told you he would be. Instead you'll find him now 3 spots north and 2 spots west of the previously mentioned tavern (Klonballas). Don't go inside when invited (you don't want to be beaten up :P). Now Ragan, asked about traveling, tells to contact Jandora (1 spot north and 1 spot east of the hostel Great Freedom).
4. Go to Jandora, ask her about a secret passage. If you mention Ragan to her you will have to pay less money. Now go to where she tells you to, ask for master Eolan and tell him what Jandora told you to say. When he asks for a real reason for your visit, tell him you need to leave the town. You'll have to accomplish a favor for him though, and leave 2 party members behind. Tip - leave those behind that have the most exp and highest level (so they won't miss anything). Exchange all items from and to them you need, and after that you're free to leave. You should accomplish this task before anything else.
On the intersection from the secret passage to the main road you'll meet some battle mages who ask you for the salamander stone. Fighting them is pointless, even if you win that fight (which I doubt very much) you'll meet the same amount of them shortly after again, and again. So give them the salamander stone, you'll find it later again at the Blood Tins (the ork mountains at the western part of the map).

I hope this will help you to continue along ;)
Btw., Blade of Destiny can be downloaded right here at Abandonia.

RPG fan 12-10-2006 12:37 PM

Wow, thanks for such a comprehensive walkthrough. It's rather frustrating when you keep getting stuck. I'm not able to spend much time playing of late due to work commitments, which is why I'm still rather slow on the game. Thanks very much for the help. It's very much appreciated :)

Gottfried 29-10-2006 11:56 PM

I only wish Shadows over Riva were unprotected sooon, its just gr8 - atmosphere, quests, music, everthing... anyway, is your ST also that slow and choppy as mine? I turbo-ed DOSBOX and it didn't helped a thing... like to take 1 square step lasts 3 seconds or so and also turning around, it's irritating. How to show up secondary stats? I forgot

Not likely. CDAccess has over 80 still in stock.
Given the speed at which CDAccess seems to be getting out of stock, it's not likely they'll get rid of these in next half decade.
If CDAccess went bankrupt and folded up, it would be sooner - but that's not likely to happen at all.

You can change the difficulty setting everytime everywhere when pressing F3 for options menu, you even don't need to start a new game for that.

As for running the game under pure XP, that differs from system to system. On some it will work right off the bat, on others it won't at all, no matter what techno-magic is applied.

Therefore, I recommend you run the game in DosBox.

Not likely. CDAccess has over 80 still in stock.
Given the speed at which CDAccess seems to be getting out of stock, it's not likely they'll get rid of these in next half decade.
If CDAccess went bankrupt and folded up, it would be sooner - but that's not likely to happen at all.
[/b]
I bought that game on ebay for the equivalent of $4 - brand new. When I heard there was a shop that still sold old games, I was excited. That was 6 years ago though, when I discovered Home of the Underdogs. And my enthusiasm lasted about 1 minute. Not only do they charge far more than they should (they really take advantage of their position), their P&P rates are outrageous. To have a $10 game shipped to me, I had to pay .... $25!!! for the cheapest shipping cost. There's far cheaper methods - I have trade games with Americans in the past, and the games only took a week max to get to me, and it only cost them $10 max to mail it to me - and those were big bulky boxes, not jewel cases. I sincerely hope CDAccess DOES go on the brink of bankruptsy, so it may re-evaluate their prices.

The Fifth Horseman 28-11-2006 03:10 PM

I just remembered something I found when playing and... well, it keeps bugging me.

There was a basilisk somwhere on the north-eastern part of the worldmap. Did anyone figure out a way to defeat the beast?

Guest_Alex_* 13-01-2007 07:21 PM

Hia ll,

I have a strange problem on the second level of the final (Tjolmar) dungeon. Basically, I entered it, got a combat with two Druids sometime later, then discovered a key in some closet, then passed three rooms that weren't populated... and finally entered the small room with the secret door in west wall (after defeating a cultist and two dogs, of course). The walkthroughs all mention some amulet pieces that I need to get to open that secret door - I searched all the storage places I could find, bumped in all walls I could bump into... no amulet pieces! Do I need to search for them somewhere else, maybe on the first level?

Thanks,

Alex

Scatty 14-01-2007 07:41 AM

The amulet pieces can be found only at the second part of this level, after you pass a narrow corridor with nasty traps (you'll know when you find it) and enter the large hall where you will be attacked immediately by sabretooth tigers. At the opposite wall, between two chests, there's the next secret door just where the stone symbol on the wall is.
The door immediately at your right then after you enter can't be opened with picklocks nor with a key nor with magic, it opens later after you acquired a certain part of the amulet, but you can teleport behind it if you got a mage who is good at that spell, simply move completely close to it and on the map you can see one space behind it then. After you enter this part of the level, be warned - when you kill the skeleton warriors and get the first amulet parts, they disappear after some relatively short time so you better hurry and get all parts of the amulet and use the amulet at the secret door, else you'll have to run about again and fight to get the amulet parts anew which sucks.

Guest_Alex_* 14-01-2007 09:57 PM

Hmm... thanks for the help, but it looks like I haven't reached the dungeon parts you mention, as I don't recognize anything you describe... I haven't even got to the corridor with the traps. Here's where I'm stuck right now (hopefully the map is readable...):

Code:

###########################
#**#####****** ######**** #
S** 2****##=##********# # #
#####=##### #####=###****K#
#C******#**** #**** # #1# #
#******C#**** #C** ##**** #
#**### ##T** T##** ####=###
#** C# ##**** #C****F## ###
#**C # ##**T**#******## ###
####################### ###
####################### ###
#######################**^^
###########################

I entered the second level at the ^^ markings, opened the first door ("="), got a combat at "1", then found the key at "K", and proceeded down the corridor to the west. I passed three rooms, none of which had anything of interest (I think one had some dried whirlweeds), and then at the end of the corridor, at "2", I got another combat (cultist and two dogs). Defeating them, I found a wall with a secret door ("S"), however, every time I click at it, I get the message "Arendel notices some irregularities on the wall and is fairly certain to have found a secret door, but is unfortunately unable to actually open it" (Arendel is my leading character). That's it, I'm stuck at this wall, having absolutely no idea what to do next, and how to open this secret door...

Thanks,

Alex

Scatty 14-01-2007 10:24 PM

I suppose she can't open it because her Open Locks skill isn't developed. You need to place someone at the leading position who has high detection skills like Arendel and is very good at opening locks with picklocks. I hope for you that you have this far in the game already a character who is good at opening locks, in case of doubt she / he could detect the door after a long time of trying even without high detection skills but the Pick Locks skill is necessary and the character who has this skill must be the leading one to open the door.

Hey guys,

I have a little problem in the Netherswamps:
I cant open the only chest on the map and as a result cant find the hrb required to transform Agdan. Is there any special way for me to open it or is there any program so that I can get the required herb without actually the game giving it to me (a hack for example)? Because I really searched everywhere for it and couldnt find it.

Thanks in advance for your help

The Fifth Horseman 08-05-2007 10:18 AM

I found this part very problematic too. Apparently, you need to be very close to the chest to open it. Just keep trying.

Guest 08-05-2007 12:06 PM

Any advices on how to do that? Because it always bounces me back the same amount that I get closer to the chest, just as a wall would. I ran against the chest for 2 minutes or something and I somehow cant imagine that it would work anytime soon. So how did you do it? Just run against it?

Thanks in advance!

The Fifth Horseman 08-05-2007 12:42 PM

It's been some years since I played it.
I remember was that some moving around the chest was also involved.

Guest 08-05-2007 02:13 PM

Iv tried several things now and ran against the chest countless times but I failed to open it. I never once received any kind of message from the game or anything. Is it perhaps possible for you to open it, if I give you the savegame? Or can you perhaps remember how you did it? Because I really am unwilling to spend more time trieing to open this chest as it doesnt work at all for me

The Fifth Horseman 08-05-2007 02:25 PM

If you still didn't manage to open the chest, it's simple: do the quest for the witch and let the fire elmental kill the mage in his tower. After you gather the required items from the mage for catching Agdan, you can return to the chest and open it too. If not yet, return to the witch, kill her and after that you can open it definitely.

Hey, I don't think that there are very few Germans who speak English! I mean, try to find someone who speaks English in France, Italy or Spain. There you will have a hard time! :D

In fact, the games of the "Northland Trilogy" are remakes in English of originally German games. The fantastic world where the games take place is a well-known German pen&paper roleplaying game called "Das Schwarze Auge", that has been invented in the early 80's. As far as the direct translation of that name (The Black Eye) has a completely different sense, they called it "Realms of Arkania" at first and today (I think) "The Attic".

The games benefit from this fact! You can sense that there is a huge fantasy world and a long used rpg-system behind them.

Try to open the chest again, get all the leathers and then put them back again. Nothing but the leathers should be in the chest. You should hear a sound then, and the exit should be open.

Hi!
Hey, anybody can help me?
In Star Trail, since I left finsterkoppen with the salamander stone, in every town i visit, if i take a few steps it appears a message like this:"The citizens look disgusted with your fashion statement or lack thereof,...and then it comes a shower of punchs..." - And every character takes a hit. And after another some steps, it happens again. It happens in every town i go. Even in Kvrasim where i am full of clothes or in Lowagen where i am with only pants and boots (the orcs took everything).

Why it happens and how can i fix it?!

thanx ^_^

Scatty 07-06-2007 07:31 PM

Simply - let the characters put their pants on. If they don't have the pants on they don't look very decent :D

Guest 23-07-2007 02:27 PM

I have some questions that i havent seen covered in any walkthrough or help and so on and on.

1) in the NW part of the map you can find a basilisk, did anybody figure out how to kill him?
2) Northern part of map you can find a heard of horses, did anybody manage to capture one?
3) Toward the east of the map, there is a hmm 'lake', then you hear a sound and get swarmed by some flys or something, is it possible overcome this without getting all bitten?
4) On your travels you can meet a guy who has a 2 handed sword, remade into 1 handed. Is that releveant in any way and can you make such a sword yourself?

Thats all that comes to my mind at the moment. Have a nice day all!

The Fifth Horseman 23-07-2007 04:01 PM

I've met the basilisk myself... no idea on how to defeat the thing, however.
My best guess is there might be some item (shield, sword, amulet, ring???) which allows that.

kmonster 23-07-2007 07:51 PM

You cannot kill the basilisk, it should be obvious if you read the texts before the encounter.

Guest 31-07-2007 04:16 AM

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but after downloading the file I've discovered that the filesize is, in fact, ~18 mb, not 11; this needs a fix.

mongalong_x 18-08-2007 04:48 AM

Hi guys, currently having a little and VERY FRUSTRATING in-game problem..
I'm currently in the swamp, have just killed the wizard in the tower, gotten the Noctrox document and crystal ball, taken it to the witch, escaped from her house, gotten the chest with the Rantzy document and the net. So all is good so far, except i can't seem to find this DAMN SWAMP RANTZY anywhere! I've looked at about four walkthroughs and they all say that he is in a 2x2 patch of land, only accessible by water in the upper north of the map. I've swum around onto every patch of land I can find, but no swamp rantzy.

Can anybody help, as I'm getting very irritated...

:(

The Fifth Horseman 18-08-2007 08:50 AM

Move around, it should be there somwhere - if you didn't kill it before.

Where did you find him? was he on a patch of land in the middle of the water next to the tower?

On the boardwalk right next to the tower I keep getting into a fight with two swamp rantzy's, every time I quit and reload it again. But it says nothing about one of them being 'peculiar' or anything.

I don't think there are more English or American people speaking German than the other way round. So, please be careful what you're talking about. Many Germans know how to speak English a lot better than quite a few other folks as they start learning it from the age of 10 for about 4-5 hours a week. Even if you're from Norway and do know German: keep it together!

Your comment is, therefore, quite unhelpful and ill-researched.

Use DOSBox to run the game.
As for re-running the configuration, I believe there is a batch or executable somwhere in the game directory that allows you to do so.

Guest 05-09-2007 09:01 PM

Great replies everyone, but I'm going to sleep right now. I'll test and update tomorrow. Thanks aging.

Guest_Megan_* 18-09-2007 12:54 AM

I'm running the game on XP through DosBox, and everything works really well. The music slows down if I alt-tab to the manual, but short of that it works like a dream, even the mouse is good. My only problem is in Saving, and its not the common problem that I keep seeing in this forum. While most people can't save because they don't have the manual, I still have mine from growing up (the book was just too humorous to ever throw away.)

My particular problem is that whenever I try to save, it shows me the box where I type in the file name...and then nothing happens. It looks like you have to make a "game file" before you can associate saves with it, but I've tried everything possible in that menu and nothing seems to work. After I name the file, simply nothing happens. Nothing to save to, nothing to load from.

I'd normally guess that this was a problem with DosBox, but I've been playing Krondor and Hoboken through it and the saves there work like a dream. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is it an XP thing? I'm dying to play this again; I like the first one, but the time limit bothered me. If anyone has any ideas, just drop a note and lemmie know! :D

Guest 14-11-2007 08:49 PM

Hi guys.
Have a quick question.
How can I defeat the six dwarves and zombie of the Dwarf Pit? It seems I always miss my attacks or the dwarves parry. The only way I have found is to petrify them with magic, but that's costly and innacurate.

Any tips?
(party is lvl 3, green elf - warrior - she jester - magician - silvan elf - magician)

Scatty 14-11-2007 11:52 PM

Attack every enemy with at least two characters, so when the zombie / undead dwarf parries one attack, the other one will be able to attack unhindered from the other side because the characters technically attack at the same time, round-based modified, so the enemy can block only one attack at the same time.
It's always handy to have at least 3 characters in the party who can attack in melee (my party always consisted of all characters who were all able to attack in melee and to be able to parry, too, which was always beneficial throughout the entire trilogy).

Guest 15-11-2007 07:13 PM

Thanks, I beated them with a combo of paralyze and magic armor.
Now its off to catch the ratzy.

Guest 15-11-2007 08:25 PM

Sorry for double posting.
How do I revert Agdan into a human?!
I've got the 18th heather herb that the captured ratzy reacts to.
But I can't combine it with the ratzy, it says the ratzy can't be used.
Any ideas??

The Fifth Horseman 16-11-2007 06:53 AM

Have you got the scroll from the chest in the swamps?
Have you read it?

Guest 16-11-2007 03:56 PM

Yes, by all the characters, many times.
A site recommends that a character must have the scroll, the heather and the ratzy to perform the tranformation.
But when I do this. I have this char read the scroll and try to use the heather, but the game says s/he doesn't know how to use it, as if s/he had never read the scroll.
Weird. And I'm stuck since I can't go back to Lowangen.

The Fifth Horseman 17-11-2007 04:05 PM

I'll look into it.

Scatty 18-11-2007 11:14 AM

I think you just need to use the heather itself, not use it on the ratzy.

The Fifth Horseman 18-11-2007 08:11 PM

You need the Noctrux Document. It's located in a tower in the middle of the swamp.

A single spellcaster must have the Ratzy, Heather and the document in his or her inventory, then use the Heather Plant.

I am having trouble with Arkandor, can't find a way to kill the beast. Tried using the Dragon Slayer, it didn't work, used magic, didn't work either. Even tried to Transform Ingramosch and that didn't work as well. Maybe someone can provide me with a small little hint as to how to overcome the handsome fellow with a bad breath.

The Fifth Horseman 16-04-2008 02:42 PM

Magic is the key. A high-level Ignifaxus is extremely useful in that fight. Or, failing that, a Fulminiticus - but it's significantly weaker compared to maxed out Ignifaxus.

Scatty 16-04-2008 03:09 PM

Magic won't last forever, though, after that you'll have to engage the beast in melee AND be able to hold out and do enough damage to make the dragon withdraw.
For that you'd need to have at least 4 characters in your party well capable of battling enemies in melee. A perfect party (in my opinion) would be usually something like 1 Wizard, 1 Elf (your choice which, I recommend Firun Elf), either 2 Fighters or 1 Fighter / 1 Thorwaler (whatever they're called in English) or 1 Warrior / 1 Dwarf, and either 1 Rogue (if you don't have a dwarf) or 1 Juggler. If you take a Dwarf with 1 Fighter then you might want to take 1 Druid or Witch instead of Rogue for additional magic caster in party, the Dwarf will take care of locks and bartering.
In my party usually even the Wizard is able to go over to melee (with the armor raising spell), while not any less capable with magic, but it's optional.

kmonster 16-04-2008 11:03 PM

The accelleratus spell is very useful.

It does matter if he plans to import his party after the final save, which comes after the ending sequence, into Shadows over Riva. He would want to save all the herbs as they can be sold for good money, and money is actually exactly one thing that isn't imported over to Shadow over Riva from previous games.

SoR will be easy enough with an imported party (so much stronger than the pregenerated characters) even without having any herbs at the start.

Sorry guys that it took me so long to reply. Thank you for helping me out with Arkandor. I will unleash a few fireballs and see what Arkandor has to say about my magician afterwards. Anyway, thank you all for the moral support. Next stop, Shadows over Riva, part three.

Um.. Just try to reinstall DOSbox?

Anyways, this game makes me.. Hmm I probably can't say that on here.. Well, the music is probably some of the best music in oldgames ever.. I have a lot of old computer game music (well, I'm a musician myself), and fx000-20 is definitely among it!

Realms of Arkania 2 - Star Trail was re-released recently within the new Das Schwarze Auge - Nordlandtrilogie. Seems to be a bad edition, but nevertheless, the game is sold again, and therefore not available for download at Abandonia anymore.

patch

It's one of my favourite games. I made my first patch on it. I patched kid faces made by imported saves from Blade of Destiny :-).

You can also use the following to defeat them:-

:mhh:Healing Potion(during combat), Strong Healing Potion(during combat), Hylaillian Fire Potions(during combat), Kukris Dagger, Kukris Mengbilar, Necrophobia Belt, Strength Belt(there are 6 or 7).

The items listed above can be found within the Dwarven Pit on Levels 1,2 and 3.:) An extra pair of hands can be useful, get your Elf to cast the Visibili spell(Preferably 4 points).

Weapons

Okay so I was hoping it would be fixed by the time I tried Star Trail, but nope, still the same problem....THERE ARE NO POLEARMS!

A pike and a trident should be bloody polearms!! They count as pointed weapons...what the heck...

At least can spears be used properly now?

Has anything changed regarding weapons from Blade of Destiny...

I was talking to NPC's about weapons and apparently axes are good with heavy armor, is it actually true that armor doesn't impair axe attack skill that much?

Also they commented on the epee being good. I've been interested in that. Can a rapier actually be better than a sword? I mean purely stat wise, one should pretty much just use warriors with swords, cause they are by far the best. Most weapons in the game suck anyways, like is there a difference between the foil, epee, and rapier, other than weight and value? Most of them just give the -1 to parry skill.

Anywho, I only just started Star Trail, so that's why I'm wondering, cause I'm hoping it might be different.

kmonster 22-04-2010 11:05 PM

The weapons don't change much in ST. No one traveled back in time to change the popular classic P&P rules according to your wishes.

Axes are good with heavy armor since the armor protection makes parrying less necessary.

The game features several classes, they have different skills and start with different skill values in different weapons. Some classes can fight best with rapiers, some with swords and some with axes.
Swords do only 5-10 damage, there are many weapons which do 6-11 or even more damage. Damage is more important than attack and parry values when weapon skill or enemy AC is high.

Warrior isn't the best class. Warriors refuse to use poison, in BoD all other classes could do far more damage considering how powerful poison was. Poison is not that powerful in ST any more.

Even in ST warrior isn't the best class.
Spellcasters can cast powerful spells and get more hitpoints at level up. Dwarves can wear the same armor, don't get a -2 penalty to magic resistance, and start with 10 extra hitpoints and better axe skill. The by far best weapon in the trilogy is a magical axe you can find in part1 and part3.

A-ramazon 23-04-2010 05:34 AM

I've definitely been poisoning my swords with my super awesome warrior :D when buying them the warriors weren't highlighting, but I just used the object anyways and it worked...the final battle was one hit for me :D

By the warrior thing I just mean that they have the highest to hit and to parry skills, especially because the sword as a weapon has no negative modifiers where as almost every other weapon does.

And the reason I wonder about the polearms is because in all the guides and stuff I read everyone labels them polearms(the trident and pike), but in game they're actually pointed weapons.

I'm stuck, can anyone give me advice?

I am in the dwarf pit, I entered the back door, went through the whole dungeon & got the Salamandar Stone.

I returned to the top floor at the big exit.

But, it says I need the key to exit and need to go back and look for it...

Pex 28-04-2010 05:18 AM

There are a few keys there, but I don't remember which one opens the main door. I don't have the game anymore, though, so I can't go and have a look.

But there is this very good walkthrough at this LINK

It's a step by step guide, though, so if you don't like spoilers you may wanna avoid it.

stuck in dwarven pit

Hello guys,

I decided to play again this awesome game, but I'm stuck in dwarwen pit, and its pretty annoying :/

I am at the 7th level, I got stone medallion, that fire ring I forgot its name. The problem starts when I take leather from that box, I took only 1 set (tried it with all, but the result was the same) and equiped my character with it.

He steps on first 3 hot plates just fine, but 4th (around the corner) just burns him.

What am I missing? :(

Does that happen on your way back after you already got the salamander stone, or on your way into the chamber with the golem?
If you get the salamander stone but ignore what the golem says and don't trade the stone / plunder other stuff in there, you're going to die on your way back and the only thing you can do is load a game before you got the stone.
If it happens on your way in, did all your characters in the party equip all 3 parts of that fireproof leather? Everyone needs to put on all 3 of them or they'll be burned.

It is before Salamander stone. On my way in that room.

I tried to equip only one character, split the party and enter only with him. But I also tried equiping all 7, and its always the same, they got burned on the 4th tile :/

Its just doesn't matter if its one char, or whole party, they got burned despite leather protection they have.

Hi CptnGlupino :max:

Did you defile the old dwarf graves from the upper levels? I mean, did you encounter any undead Dwarfs? If you did, then Ingerimm (the dwarf's god) is really pissed and won't let you in. There has been a feature in the original german release where you could watch the gods' favor. I'm not sure if this is kept in Startrail but anyway, try hitting both (!) Shift-keys at the same time and in the following console type GODACCOUNT. These numbers are the gods' favors. God 11 is Ingerimm. So if you have a very low number this might be the problem.

What you can do is to reload from the beginning of the dungeon :omg: or go back to the first level in that room were one of your party members falls in trance. There you can sacrifice money to Ingerimm. Spent all and watch again on the GODACCOUNT. I am really not sure if this works but you can give it a try.

And never fool around with a god :whistling:

Yay! Could be that... I did defile the graves... silly me :/

GODACCOUNT 11 says -2417, so that can't be good, huh? :/

I'll reload and try again, will let you know if that was the deal...

tnx alot!

Thats definitive the problem. I think you even get warned by one of your party members not to defile the graves. These impasses are the reason why it is very important to have multiple save games and not only one. This game series does not forgive any mistakes. Like the real life ...

You can still defile them after you got the salamander stone, and escape the mines through climbing down (I think) the shaft on the lowest level, thus avoiding being killed by the enraged dwarves and the need to return the key to the temple :p

Correct. However, note that the shaft collapses and becomes unusable after you use it to enter or exit the mines.

installation problem

Hello all,

I own the original CD-rom and tried to install it again. Unfortunately this failed: if I run instcd from dosbox it just exits, if I run it from windows xp, it says it is not a valid win32 application. Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks in advance.

The Fifth Horseman 31-01-2011 03:45 PM

"It just exits" without an error message?

Sorry for the late reaction, I have been a bit busy.

I have mounted the directory with the dosbox games as c: and the cd-rom as d:.

Try removing -ioctl from the CD drive mount and mounting the C drive like this instead:

mount c d:\

To switch to the dosgames and / or game folder use the command CD like for this:

cd \dosgames

In whole:
mount c d:\
mount d e:\ -t cdrom
c:
cd \dosgames

Be sure not to delete or modify anything in the root directory (C:) though, or your Windows installation would be screwed (gotta advise you that with such mount :p).
Hope that helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip. I tried it today, but the result is still the same. I see:

Z:\>mount c d:\
Drive C is mounted as local directory d:

Z:\>mount d e:\ -t cdrom
MSCDEX installed.
Drive D is mounted as CDRom e:\

Z:\>c:

C:\>cd \dosgames

C:\DOSGAMES>d:

D:\>instcd

D:\>

So, the instcd command does nothing. BTW, I use dosbox version 0.73. Sorry for bothering you so much.

The Fifth Horseman 25-02-2011 10:33 PM

Perhaps try using a path or a drive letter as an argument for instcd?

No, I still have the original reference card and it clearly states to start instcd without any arguments. It should ask for the installation instructions. It's a long time ago I played this one, I don't remember the installation procedure because back than it all worked without any problem. I'll try to get the oldest pc I own working and see if it installs on that one.

I have Realms of Arkania Trilogy but I think the installer is the same.

Have you actually checked what is on that CD? I don't even have a file called instcd there (although the manual and readme.txt on the CD say that you should type instcd to install Star Trail).

I installed the game with inst_st.exe. Maybe there's some similar .exe file on your CD?

Scatty 28-02-2011 10:48 AM

Or try looking for install.exe or setup.exe instead, that was a usual name for an installer in Dos games.

Problem in dwarven pit

Hi. I got a problem in the last level of dwarven pit (where you can get from the water level). I should go to the box where are those fur clothes or the stuff I need to have to get further. But when I go downside form the water level using stairs, turn left, make two steps, then turn left, there are door which I can open but there is a wall behind them. When I look into the map of the last level of dwarven pit, there is no wall behind these door, but entrance further. Can anyone help please? I have no idea what to do to finish this last part of the pit.

Thank you in advance

Hmm, trying to remember now. There is a wall where you need to use a torch for it to disappear. But that is after you get leather clothes.

There is also a wall (or a door) that won't let you out until you put leather clothes back.

And also, if you looted dwarven graves, you won't be able to go past some door.

Hope this helps - it's been so long since I played that game.

what key do i press to exit character creation?

I can't seem to find the key that would allow me to exit character creation and save my characters. The manual seems to be very unhelpful in this regard. I can get as far as the first screen with stats and that's it. Any help would be appreciated.
