This is the first draft storyboard for the skyscraper banner. V.01 The idea is that the invaders will blip-blip-blip their way into the line of fire from the turret from the right. As each one reaches the centre, it is blasted - top one first (as it's the first in the line of fire) - and from each explosion, a letter appears / is revealed... Nine invaders = ABANDONIA The word is spelled out and then the second part begins. (I know that the letters are not formatted, and the invaders are all lined up instead of being staggered diagonally from the right, but this is just the preliminary sketch.) Once all the invaders are destroyed and the Abandonia letters are displayed: The letters will start shimmering and the turret will shoot them from the bottom up this time. The screen clears just in time for the next wave (which is basically a repeat of the first half.) The animation will stop as the last letter is cleared and restart from the beginning - this should give the impression that it is one continuous cycle (as most cycling gifs / swfs work...) I'll explain more about it later, because we're going out. But! Using this idea, we hope to create a small flash game of space invaders. The shield above your turret will be the letters that spell Abandonia, so you must save the Abandonia city/shields from the marauding space invaders! Should be fun. It's either that or I was thinking an Arkanoid / Breakout type game. Maybe even both... Anyway, let me know what you think! Pete |

Good work Saccade. :)
|
Thanks.
I just hope that it goes to plan. Is pentupal a chemical bond between two transition metals of different groups? I've never heard it used in any other way. That makes a really good adjective if you use the definition above. Nice. I like it when you can use scientific words to describe a deeper emotion or idea. It's almost like inventing words, though it's more like a discovery that there has always been another meaning. Just, it's always rarely used and secretly hidden. I'm going to see if I can use it in any of my work. Thanks _russ |

http://trgt.googlegroups.com/web/bas...e1RAbATn9IBdMc I haven't embedded all the fonts, so you may not be able to see some of the invaders properly. I think it's a good start - the invaders need to move more like in the game and the spacing needs to be larger. So does the order of the invaders... But I think it's the right idea. |

What's the animated comics, russ? Do you know any sites that I could look at? I've never thought about doing animations with ascii... Is it made in as a swf or Fireworks gif? Or something else? I think I've seen one on a you-tube video of General Monmotha (fish-dude) from Return of the Jedi where he's singing a song, but that was loads better than anything I could do. I don't think I could do stuff that complicated... I'm just a standard 101 UK keyboard. I just like making the pictures for an ascii site. Sometimes I get one on there. Not often... It's more fun to make them about computer games and stuff. I get the structure from an icon editor and then convert it into the right characters for the shape. Some you need to use a PC keyboard for and some a Mac keyboard. I still haven't found the right font to make use of the extended character map for here, though. It always comes out wrong... Maybe I should try the < div > thing GTX and Arete mentioned..? |

Saccade, some of your stuff is not very appropriate for an abandonware *gaming* site.
|
Yeah, Frodo - I've been spelling [ spoiler] as spolier, Arete pointed out, and neglecting to change the tags so that they work, rather than being displayed as text.
Before you posted this I got a good bashing in the Chat-Box! So I'm aware that some people have decided that the Art section is for abandonware-only art and that I need to put a disclaimer on ASCII pictures of high quality, fine images and censor my sense of humour... What I don't get is why people will laugh at them one moment and then decide that they're offensive shite the next. I'm going to go back through them and make sure they've got the right tags (I need to change the code formatting too, so the spoiler tags work right) and put a NSFW thing on them. I'll do that now. *clicks eggs |
Does anyone know what the name of the font is that is used in the main Abandonia logo on the Front Page?
I've been meaning to do an ASCII version of that and the Space Invaders but, as I said in Fubb's thread the other day, I can't get the Invaders to look exactly the same for some reason... |

I take it that's an attempt to divert..? I'm not 12 years old, but let's pretend that I am susceptible to psychological trickery... As far as I'm concerned, I post things in the spoiler tags and if anyone wants it removed - just please let me know so I can save it first! I'm not likely to disagree or start causing grief. This is a bit like my neighbours complaining to the management company about me leaving my bike in the communal hallway - my door is right here... Just knock say and I'll move it. The stuff which I do put in the spoiler tags is stuff that I would consider to be offensive, should I be be more sensitive or have any empathy or consideration for others. That way, everybody who bothers looking at any of this knows that it is stuff that isn't for kiddie-winks or people who don't share my sense of humour. Thanks! Pete |

First html Ascii I've done
My first ever serious attempt at html Ascii!
I've made the font a few points too big, so they look best if you decrease the text size two times in my Firefox. http://trgt.googlegroups.com/web/dot...gYotyj7-X7wDON It's of the Day of the Tentacle in-box poster that you got with the CD version. The last one is from the game, where Purple gets mega pumped and "TAKES ON THE WORLD!!!". Still could be a lot better - I need to work on the colours more now, rather than the typeset. I like the one of Purple best. At 25% size in Dreamweaver, they look pretty good to me. I'm going to try to replicate that, but it has started to look like a printer picture where the ink's running out and leaving white streaks... I have a few ideas on how to make them better, but I think that I'm kind of getting to the limit of what I can do with Ascii - simpler is starting to look better! Maybe searching the internet for new artists can give me some inspiration and teach me some new techniques. There's got to be some of the old people still doing it and new ones who've improved upon it... Here's a version of the Purple Tentacle one in its original form: http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/u...leTentacle.jpg It still looks a little dark - its contrast and brightness could do with another tweak... ---- I just look at the stats for my photobucket accounts... The one that I use for here, the same one I use for my Sniper Elite clan, has more views of Sergeant Sarah Winters' portrait than all the other pictures put together! Mostly from other Sniper Elite clan sites - specifically Gentlemen of the Scope! LOL That just sounds pervy! And they're supposed to be the "best" players. Well, they do design a lot of the game's stuff and mods, etc... There have been hundreds of views of her, where the user originated from Abandonia! I will tell her that she has many admirers in the world of computer games. |
Wow, your Purple Tencacle is amazing :3:
Must have taken you ages though :max: |
Pete what program are you using for the purple tentacle and ugly monkey ones?
|
Ace - go to http://archives.thebbs.org/ra107c.htm
That's the best place to get tools like the ones I use. There are, however, loads of other programmes that you can use - if you can find the ones I'm missing and post the links, I'd be grateful! Image to Ascii programmes don't seem as abundant as they used to be... I use several of the tools, as they're really not very good at doing the job and you always have to go in and clean up. A lot of them don't use symbols and only letters which is really bad - it can take ages to go in and change all the j's to ; or , and r's to ' if you think it needs it. They work best on images that are 800x600+ which sucks for thumbnails or digital camera images which are smaller because, when you enlarge them up to that size, they look rubbish! The first one I use is called The Draw, which is a Freeware Dos Ascii/Ansii editor. It's pretty old, but you can probably still find it. The next is called GIFSCII and is pretty good at changing images to Ascii. The only thing is, it's an old freeware C programme and it runs on a command line. Copy the stuff from this one into The Draw. I'm going to have a try at MosASCII, as that's supposed to be a really good one, but haven't found it yet - the copy I knew was deleted along with AOL Homosite. That'd be a really handy tool to have, because I think it does Ascii to Html too - I'd like to have a look at what you can do with that. It's Windows Shareware and used to be at http://www.mosascii.com - but that site seems to have disappeared too. If you can find that one and another called PicTexter that'd be well good. They're the ones that I think are the best. I don't know any working download links. Figlet uses JavE which is pretty good. The Process: Using the tools from the bbs archive above that you find best suited to you: You have to convert the Jpeg/png/gif into blocks of pixels, the size of text that you want. Then use one of the tools that replaces the pixels with characters (you can choose the set and replacements). After that, all you have to do is do your best to copy the colours from the original, like I do in the posts in the forum. There's probably an easier way, but I am still searching the 'net for stuff. I haven't done this for ages. I'll post stuff here, if you want it, as and when I find it? I'm not sure if you can, but if you copy or quote one of the coloured posts here and use the standard editor (I use the extended one, as it hides the tags) you'll see all the colour codes. It's best to add these in afterwards and use the extended editor. Work from the bottom left to the top right - doing it any other way will end up really confusing and totally mis-aligned. I'm going to try and find a converter to HTML as well. If you find one in the bbs archive, or anywhere else, will you let me know? http://www.jdneff.com/ascii2.php I used to use this one, but you couldn't copy the text out as it wouldn't keep the colours! Kinda defeats the purpose. It was really designed for pure html. I never really got into html ascii (I was too young to start being interested in anything more than Basic really) at the time - didn't get into html until I was nearly 18 - and now I see how it could be really handy - but even this has gone too :( Seems that Ascii is dying out on the 'net these days... All the old places I've looked either haven't been updated for years or are 404 I'm dead. I will keep looking... ---- I've found that you can use Dreamweaver to import wysiwyg text colours from Fireworks. Makes html conversion a lot easier... |

If you find a good one that does ascii to html, will you let me know please, russ?
None of the ones that I've found seem to work very well. Also, if you can find a new generator that is able to convert images and produce good results (preferably one that's free) into text, rather than a jpg or something, so I can edit it in Fireworks, that'd be awesome too! If you can find one that will do it with images that are less than 800x600, that'd be awesomly amazing! I can't find one that will let you do it with images less size than that. The problem is if you blow the image up to be that big, is that it needs a lot of cleaning up afterwards because it's so blocky, or it doesn't use the characters or character set that I've told it use. The generator that you can download off the tools page, from the link a few posts back, only uses a-z and no other characters, which is shit. It can take a while to copy all the characters and their colours (which is what takes the most time - having to rebuild them all) from Fireworks, Imagestyler, Illustrator or Photoshop into Dreamweaver? That's the only way I've found so far that works every time. I was using one on the tools page, the link's in one of the posts above, but 2/3rds of the time, it doesn't work and the picture comes out all screwed up. I'd like to be able to copy every ascii made in Fireworks - so the characters, the position it's in, the colour and any tags (like bold, etc.) - directly into Dreamweaver. If it goes into HTML and is formatted (which is the main part, ensuring that it is all still in the same place), then that's fine. It doesn't have to go straight into Dreamweaver. I can just copy the code and it'd be the same thing... It just needs to have the tables set up correctly and retain all the other formatting and colours and stuff. Thanks! |

It's almost like a beak, isn't it..? How tall can the koala with the sword be? So I know into what size grid I can aim to squeeze it all. Having it symmetrical is good - it makes it easier for me! What's a Ghostriger..?
I have no idea what one could be / is. A ship? --- Is it a typo for ghost-writer? If so, I think that I've had enough of people spoofing my accounts and trying to get me in shit by mimicking posts on Usenet. But, Usenet is the best place to pick up trolls and get into flamewars with people. Especially as most of the people who post into the ascii newsgroups often cross-post to alt.usenet.kooks, alt.flame.troll, etc... That can be frustrating, as they've never managed to do it 100%. There's always a marker that they leave. One guy, who calls himself me but leaves a marker A Patient and Noiseless Spider is pretty good, but he uses aioe.org, which is sort of like "How to use remailers to hide your identity in Usenet using an online Linux Emulator for Dummies" and leaves a very obvious signature. You don't even need to use aioe.org or any emulator... You can do it to that standard in any text editor or using nslookup in Windows. Anyway, he's the closest to getting it right. For a while, he took up the challenge that I gave him to get it entirely correct - no markers left at all - but gave up and spammed for a week. Now it's just business as usual... Usenet may be a really good resource for anything that you could conceive of transmitting in digital format, but the community isn't great. Finding a group that you get along with and who get along with each other well doesn't happen often. I think that forums like this are much better. Some reason they're just friendlier. |

Looks really good! Sorry for not replying earlier - I broke my wrist on Sunday and only got out of the hospital on Wedensday. It's my left arm and I'm right handed, but typing takes more time and effort now.
It doesen't have to be absolutely symetric as long as it doesn't get all screwed up once you use center alignment on the page. Speaking of it, could you do full picture, as all characters and no spaces (or no more than a single space between two characters)? Thanks for this. |
I don't get that, Pex...
What do you mean "full picture, all characters and no spaces.."? It's quite hard to get things looking symmetrical and not have some white space in them and look good. If you want to see what one with no white space - that will work as a signature - looks like, have a look at the ascii I did in Fubb's thread, before I knew about the [ code] tags here. I could make it so that it has another character substituted instead of space (so [...] instead of [ ]) but that just looks messy and I'm not happy with the results. I need the maximum size you want. Most signatures aren't more than 20 lines high and 100 wide. They start to look shit after that and become unweildly. It also sucks big time if it ever doesn't display right because someone's got Unicode or html disabled or something. The other thing I could do is make it like I have the ascii images of the thumbnails from the frontpage. Plus, I've been converting them into html, so they wouldn't need to be symmetrical as I could post the code..? If you wanted one of those, I suppose I can make it. Just give me a bit of time, as I have several to finish off for another website at the moment and ones that big take a while to do. Gutted to hear about your wrist. Good job it's not your wanking hand! Take it easy, Pete --- I can't fit the image in the forum - the character limit prevents me from displaying it. What I can do is put a link to it here. The only problem will be that it'll be displayed as an image. I think it'd be easier if I drew it and then spent the extra time copying it into html code and posted that for you. This way you can still copy the characters straight from the webpage, since it'll be as an image and as text. You can also copy the source-code from it, too. You'll be able to get the colours and formatting if you do that. There won't be any need to mess around with formatting. If you are going to display it on a webpage, however, perhaps keeping the ascii as an image (whatever format you want) would be best? It'd be the easiest way to handle it and the image won't ever display incorrectly - like the bigger pictures I've drawn here. You said you wanted it div-aligned central, right? In that case, I don't need to make it symmetrical, either - not unless you want it specifically symmetrical for another reason. There's no need to have it like that if the only reason is easier formatting in html... |

Ok, I'll try to explain as best as I can. Don't worry if you don't get it, after all it's not that important :)
Do you play Travian, on-line game? If not, don't start, it's too adictive ;) Well, I need a koala picture there for my alliance coat of arms. The problem is that it has to be center alignment (which is why I thought symetrical would be the best) and if you use more than one space character in a row it counts only one, so for example: Code:
/ | \ Code:
/ | \ Code:
/ / ||| \ \ Code:
/ . .|. . \ As for size, your original koala is wide enough - it can be even as twice as wide and there's no limit in height as long as it looks nice, |
how about unbreakable space..? i bet it doesn't count as space
look into your start->run->charmap |
Hmm...
Unbreakable space sounds like a good alternative. Making things using .'s or other 'fillers' tends to always look a bit naff, in my opinion. If there's no other way, I'll do it like that but the results won't be good (ie, it'll be a really shit picture, rather than a passably shit picture). I will have a play around with it over the next week, Pex and let you know. I have some more ascii to do for some other people for their weekly updates, so I need to get those done first, really. And Travain? As in "Enemies lay in Ambush!" "War comes to Travain!"? I thought it looked better when it was a friendly come build your village game. I didn't play it then (not being a fan of any mmorpg, especially browser ones) and I doubt I'll play it now. But I may take a sneaky look to see what you're on about with the coat of arms thing ;) That's my excuse anyway. |

Read back a few posts and there's a long one about how I do it after (pages)some-one asked the same question.
If you want, I can make up some charts of symbols and what they are most commonly used for..? Mostly, though - in notepad or ascii editor (keeps spaces as spaces) and then copy and paste. |
I'm going to have to edit this later so it fits on one screen - having it scroll really sucks unless it's like a reveal or something. Like a page turn in a one-strip comic book or something.

Nice one! That's quality stuff, man!
That is AWESOME, Simoneer!
Proper stonking kushty! You are hereby promoted to the rank of Ascii Geek! The AB Text Adventure game I am writing... Can I use that as one of the pictures?! I plan to do in "beauty" Ascii (Like http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/u...ed/Caesar2.png and the others in that album - I really like the System Shock one and the Purple Tentacle one, but White on Black works best, not coloured... :hmm:) and also regular text Ascii - like your comic here - for some events / descriptions that are short and sweet. That's another goal - you have to persuade King Leonidis of Sparta to refuse the Bablyonians (or whoever it was at Thermopole) their tribute of "Earth and Water"... He can send you on a quest to prove that you are telling the truth that he will ensure that Sparta's sacrifice will be worth it by... Ah - I'm not telling the answer to that one. Nice cartoon, for sure - very inspirational! You have helped me with a new idea, so thank you! Quote:
You can pick it up really quickly, Simoneer - keep at it china! |
Can you find a link to a free download, Batman?
The places (like freedosgames.com) where you have to sign up and participate in shit never let you download as they're never in sync with each other. Or very rarely... Cheers mate - I don't mind a bit o' cheatin' in this foine estaablishment! It is every privateer's duty to cheat every once in a while... And stampede the women and rape the horses; sack the town and raze it to the ground; make a raft of your dead crewmates and a shark and then sail it home. (That's from the comic Watchmen - a sub /metaphor-story called Tales of the Black Freighter. You can watch it online or buy on DVD. It takes some digging to find it - about 5 minutes - but it is a good story!) I think I will put that in my game, too... Cool - idea central. |

Claire finally found me the Aardman animation photo's she took - Wallace and Gromitt!!! We also put some more personal photo's up if anyone wants to see: http://s651.photobucket.com/albums/u...0and%20Family/ I like some of the ones from the Peak District. The hotel we stayed in was nice. I can't wait til we go away again in a week or so! I will have to remember to take a camera - I've never kept photo's before and some of them are quite nice to look at. I am going to get this one: http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/u...m/PC050035.jpg printed out and put it in a frame that enhances it. It will look nice in the place where I keep the map of Tamriel and Shivering Isles, maybe. It is nothing that it actually looks like - it is so abstract and is something that you would never see on such an everyday thing. It was the condition of light and environment, like moisture haze, temperature and they aren't clouds, I don't think. It reminds me of a cyberpunk version of those water-features that look like they just drop off the edge (yet look perfectly still, only a few inches deep) of skyscraper-penthouse balconies or gardens. The kind of place that the evil guy who, as a side project, is behind everything to do with Ichi the Killer for some mysterious reason and was a close friend of Walter Bishop - Before he was recruited by the FBI as evil science liaison person. (I like the picture anyway) Just hope my foot's better before holiday... http://s651.photobucket.com/albums/u...%20Comparison/ |
The scenery is astounding! Great images! However, your foot looks awfully broken? Have you seen the doctor about that foot yet? OUCH!

Pete & Claire say hello to you too, Arete and Everyone else. And we've got a near-final draft of the Space Invaders .swf skyscraper that we started. (several months ago...) http://trgt.googlegroups.com/web/Aba...by7X2bk72xmV9P Don't worry about the stuff you can see outside of the frame - it'll disappear later, either when it's embedded or when we get round to finishing it off. The action needs a bit of tweaking to make it look more authentically Space Invaders. Stuff like the speed at which the bullets travel over the distance need to be sorted, too. Just a lot of minor things, but it'll get done eventually. Going to finish off the "Link to Us - Nerds" button too. Get it down to a decent filesize (not 1.4mb!) like the .swf animations we've made for Abandonia. But before that, there's another project that I've been working on that I'll start posting in here as each part is completed. The TADS Abandonia game is nearing a complete second chapter, too. Once the third is finished, I just need to diversify the standard responses, to fit the context of wherever it comes up, and I'll post that to be ripped into, too. http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/u...doned/144b.png Think this may be a bit heavy on the dial-up... |

Greets Saccade,
Your ASCII Drawings are really cool. It's not a medium I am familiar with. Must take a long-time to get things just right. Cool to look at in the end though. Keep them coming. Maybe you should make a portrait of me? :whistling: |
Hey Sean - how's things?
If you provide a piccie, I'll put some squiggles that attempt to look like it. It is quite fiddly sometimes... The hardest part is getting it from the ASCII editor or Notepad/Wordpad and formatting it so it works here with the [xCode] tags. Sometimes it works fine, usually the more simple ones, but sometimes it can be a real bitch to get everything in its proper place to make it look right. That's only usually with the extremely repetitive and / or complicated ones. It is satisfying, in a way, having to re-format the characters. It's kind of like a Magic Eye picture... I like how it slowly starts to resolve into an image that your brain goes "hey, that looks a bit like this...". Most of the time, the drawings don't end up as what they started out being. They just tend to take on a different shape, unless I'm copying from a picture, and, like Bonsai, you have to let the shape decide what type it wants to be before you can refine it. Probably why everything ends up looking like a bunch of stick-men if I spend too much time on them... L8rz |
Thread moved from Games - Abandonia Octo
Ready for arts and crafts, boys and girls?
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/u...ed/AB_Octo.jpg http://trgt.googlegroups.com/web/Oct...6nUF0o4qtAvbzM This link, right here ^, is to a print-and-cut-out fold up model. Just click through when it's found and you should get a .pdf with an unfolded cube on it. All you have to do is cut out the two pieces, make some slits for the tabs and the baseball cap's peak, and fold it neat and tidy, slotting the lettered parts into each other. I'll post some more as-and-when, interspersed with the usual dross that I post here. I'm not sure I'll keep the .pdf format, though I wanted to protect the images from being copied as they're Abandonian, as it seems the extra click-thru is off-putting. Either that or people don't like making models any more. I like making these. Something to do for half an hour (if a bit heavy on the ink - I'm working on sorting the others out so they aren't so costly on the printer), make and keep until you get bored of them. In which case throwing them away is okay, as you still have the template to make more, if you ever felt like it. I'm liking the hyphenated-triple-barrelled-word-thing today... |
hah :D
edit: can you upload a copy with loseless compresion? this jpeg picture has really low quality and you see irregularities in compression when you print it |
Which .jpg, russ?
The only .jpg is the small, compressed and optimised for web thumbnail preview thingy. That one is crappy quality, but it wasn't meant to be printed out. It's just a preview. The .pdf I kept straight from fireworks and photoshop - it's the same quality (the colours should be solid...) as the original .jpg and resulting .png. Let me know which one yer talking about and I'll see what I can do, matey. [ed] Cheers for pointing that out, Russ - The .pdf's just come out the printer and the colours are solid and lines are defined. The small image looks pretty tatty, you're right. I'm pretty sure that I kept the original sized one from before I messed around with it. Not doing that would be pretty stupid, right..? I'm sure it's around somewhere... |

Now that's a challenge! :D
One I'll probably use some handy generator software for. I usually measure ASCII by characters instead of pixels, but if I use the software, then it means that it'll be easy to resize and it'll be a png or jpeg when I've finished with the after-touches. I've been meaning to try doing some HTML Ascii again, anyways... ------ Hmmm - I've touched up the image so that it's a bit brighter and the definition's better... But, it's still too dark to convert using the software that I've used in the past (I had to enlarge the image as it only works on 800x600+ which sucks, because that means you can't do thumbnails and have them look the same...): Have you got an higher resolution (or quality) version of this image, or one that's not entirely red..? Either that or I'm gonna go back to the ascii resource pages and find some conversion software that's, erm, free. |
In the meantime, while I'm working on that...

It makes things look the same as the jpg you load, but I don't like the style... Check out this one: http://www.codeismylife.com/ascii_br...king/7328.html This is the standard that it produces, and it doesn't really look like ASCII does it..? I guess that it IS ascii, but it doesn't have the amateur souless feel that regular ascii with normal characters does. I haven't used one for ages, nor done any ascii for ages... Got loads started (like above) but not finished them. This thread is full of WIP's that i've put for people who've asked for them and never gotten around to finishing. The story of my life...
