Shannara Problems

Hi Everyone!

I have a problem running this game. Every time I want to start it with shannara.exe the game exits with the following error: unable to allocate memory for the voice directory.
Does anybody know a solution for this? Thanks in advance for the answers, and greetings from Hungary.

do you use dosbox?

Oh, yeah, forgot to add that I'm using dosbox v0.72

dosraider 23-05-2009 10:07 AM

Just tested the game in dosbox 0.72, default settings, runs perfect.

So: your mountings/settings are probably wrong.
Care to post your OS / mount lines / inputs?
Would be helpful to pinpoint where you go wrong.

_r.u.s.s. 23-05-2009 10:09 AM

me too, and i tried various configs, putting the game in various mount virtual dirs, c:\, c:\shannara, c:\whatever\shannara and all worked

by the way, the game control interface is terrible. i just sometimes wanna unclick an object and i always have to find an empty spot on map to do so, considering the fact that almost everything is clickable it turns into a devious pixel hunting

dosraider 23-05-2009 10:13 AM

Yep, even drag/drop works.
I wonder how he did to bork that one ....?

OK, in the attachment is my config file for dosbox. I'm not a pro dosbox user. I have just recently started using it so there could be problems with the settings.
Any help would be appreciated.

I used to use D-Fend until I came across it's update:
http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/

No longer do I face the headaches of dosbox.

And yes I used to use Dos back in the day, it's almost like Latin. lol

hmm, so then after it boots up you go cd shannara and then shannara.exe?

manbaru- saying that there's headache in dosbox is like saying that there's a headache in counting 7x8. plus, he has the mount commants all right, this problem is probably somewhere else

did you try redownload portman? also, try dragging shannara.exe to dosbox.exe icon=S

dosraider 23-05-2009 10:29 AM

Dosboxconf looks good.
Still missing some detailed and relevant info:

Inputs?
Add:
Did you ran setsound or install by any chance?
OS?
What unarchiver did you use?

Also:
do a cd shannara and a dir /w and post a screenie.
Screenies are taken with CTRL+F5 , you'll find it in
\progarm files\dosbox-0.72\capture\

Till the day you run into a game that won't run using D-Fend, then you'll be completely screwed, as so many before you.

_r.u.s.s. 23-05-2009 10:37 AM

actually dosraider was right,
Portman, you've run setsound exe and set the sound to some digital sound or whatever, considering that the game has been ripped of the speech the game can't find it

so run your setsound.exe again and set no digital audio

also.. pick creative labs sound blaster or 100% compatible for music, whoever uploaded the game set general midi, which sets the output to windows default midi mapper, which also produces horrendous sounds

dosraider 23-05-2009 10:44 AM

Also:
Don't run the game from c: with c:\shannara\shannara as input, won't work.
do a

cd shannara
shannara

*If* you ran setsound or install, I would advise:
delete the shannara folder and start from scratch.
The game works really fine 'as is' out of the archive with nothing altered.

_r.u.s.s. 23-05-2009 10:45 AM

setting no digital sound is enough=P

I'm using Windows XP SP3, and for unpacking archives Winrar 3.80 and Winzip.
And yes, i did run the setsound executable - was it a mistake from my part? All my other dos games just work fine under dosbox without any errors.

Yes, that's the screw up.
Read my last post, delete the shannara folder and start over from scratch.

Most games on AB will run fine out of the archive, they are pre configured to run in dosbox.

portman, read this post

holy crap, 3 pages of this junk, someone should split it into a separate topic in troubleshooting

The games runs fine after disabling digital audio, and it was not necessary to redownload it. Thank you all for the help and sorry for the trouble i have caused you.:)

Dosraider, point me in the direction of a game that cannot be run by D-fend please. As I've yet to find one.

Only means that you aren't trying out as many games as I do ( some 3000+) .... *sigh*

For crying out loud ....
I let this one speaks for itself, happy reading, 728 posts, on Vogons only.

Fact is, the devs did not include a GUI because:
-> There are extra problems with every dosbox update.
-> A GUI adds an extra layer of specific problems, over those who are dosbox specific.

Whatever, this has been a point in discussions over and over again, you want to use a GUI, do it, I won't get into another of those idiotic topics again.

Bye bye.

Right mouse button de-selects. ;)

Frodo 23-05-2009 06:45 PM

Portman, the game is a rip, and has no voices. But everything else is intact. :)

Don't change any of the settings at all, as the download is already set to work fine. Just download, and play. And enjoy. :max:

_r.u.s.s. 23-05-2009 10:19 PM

it's been solved already=P

btw japo- oh wow lol
