Okay, I downloaded this game from The Underdogs and it won't let me install it. I can't fit the whole program on one disk and when I put it on two disks it won't install. It doesn't ask for the other disk. I loved the first game and wanrt to play the second one. Someone please help me. I am running windows xp and also have a computer with WIN. 98.
Put it on your HD ;)
Ya, I thought of that but it still needs to be on a disk because if you set your hard drive as the source disk it doesn't recognize it. I have gotten it to slightly work but I was running windows. Uugh.... :rifle: DIE COMPUTER!!!
if the disk type is a CD, have you tried using a virtual CD Drive and mounting an ISO? Just a thought, i've never even heard of the game myself
First, install DosBox. Then mount the directory containing the installation files as A (mount a c:\Life&Death2Install, for example) and mount c: as c (mount c c:\). That ought to do the trick.
Awesome! I will definitely try that. :D
         Okay, here's what I did:
1.Started DOSBox 2.typed mount a c:\windows\lifedeath2 3.typed mount c c:\ 4.Ran Install Program 5.Screamed in frustration when game didn't work... It said that config.dat was corrupted and that the game needed to be reinstalled. What can I do now? :help: |
Did it say that before or after the installation, and did it say that before trying it in DosBox too?
After the installation and it said it when I tried it in Windows too. :wall:
First, check if there's a file called config.exe, setup.exe or the likes... one that lets you set the configuration of the game. If there's no such file, look for config.dat in the archive you got the game from (the zipped version)
No, there is only .ega, .vga. .tzf, .qpz, and, exe. No .DAT. There is a config.dat file after the program is installed though.
What're all the .exe files?
They are just the install.exe file. No more.
And in the folder where you installed it to?
Okay, it is at this directory: C:\WINDOWS\lifedeath2\install.exe
There is no other exe file in the whole folder. There is then a folder named CP and it has all the ega and vga files in it. |
So it basically just copied the files from the disk to your HD, but didn't unpack a thing?
I guess so because at the end there was some of the same files and then an ld2.exe file. That was it. Try downloading it and figure it out. I know it works because others have had success with it. The one time it did work and the text was all garbled. The picture was cut into little vertical sections and the colour was all off. Then the mouse froze when it got to the main screen.
Uhhhh... you ever tried running ld2.exe?
Duh...that's the install program...
What's install.exe then?
Oops, not the install program, I mean it is the program you use to run the game. Install is the installation program...
Does that file work under DosBox?
What? The install program? I don't know. I boot it up from DOSBox and then install and run the game from it so I guess so. Maybe another emulator would work better...
This is a Dos game, right? DosBox is a Dos emulator...
Yes, it's a DOS game. Um, maybe it has to run inpure DOS. But DOSBox is supposed to act like pure DOS. GRRRR!!!I am PUZZLED!!!!
Ok, tell me step by step what you did to get it to work, from the moment you got the game from the net or shop till now.
That's the thing, I don't know.
Okay, here is how I best remember it. 1.Unpacked files 2.Started install.exe 3.Inserted ist floppy disk with half of the files on it and the install program 4.Installed to the HD. 5.Program started and gave me error messages that kept saying something.xxx was missing. 6.All the files that were asked for were files that were in the unpacked folder so I moved them to the folder with ld2 i n it and then it worked. It went up to the main screen until it froze. The screen was all garbled too. |
That running up to the main screen, then freezing... was that under Windows or under DosBox?
Both.
Very strange. Let's see if I can find the game. Will try here and see if I can work it out.
Tried two versions. The installation version doesn't work. Gives the same problem here. The other version works fine, though. Try that one.
Crossing my fingers! It is the version, I think because I tried it on 3 different computers and none worked. I am not home now, but when I get there I will tell you if it worked on my computer. :D
Where in the world did you find the two versions? I looked EVERYWHERE for them. I spent two solid days and nothing!!! |
One on HOTU (the one that didn't work) and one on some French Abandonware site, which claims that the game only runs in pure Dos, although it works fine in DosBox for me (saved two patients yesterday... won't say how many I lost  )
Okay, it did work.
But, wait a second, the game didn't let me operate! It says not enough parameters... OMFG!!!When will this thing work!!!The operation is the best part!!! I will download it again when I get home and try there. What files are we missing????? NVM, I put the graphics files in and it now works. Thanks for all your help!!! :w00t: |
