red_avatar 27-06-2009 02:01 AM

You could always join for one of the other prizes :).

TripleG 27-06-2009 02:49 AM

Dark Forces is an excellent choice, for any of you runners-up...

riccso 27-06-2009 09:31 AM

Great job red!
Bye-Bye boredom,hello google! :D

Kugerfang 27-06-2009 09:49 AM

The anagrams are effing hard.

red_avatar 27-06-2009 10:04 AM

Haha well they're not that hard - the names are pretty short considering ;).

Kugerfang 27-06-2009 12:08 PM

Cocain Shimmer..... wtf

The Bard 27-06-2009 12:32 PM

Anagrams are far too easy to cheat on... I hate the screenshot part, they are much too hard, bunch of 'em are hardly known games, and the screenshots are only partial...

red_avatar 27-06-2009 12:34 PM

At least 13 of the 20 are very well known games - some already told me the screenshots are too easy so I guess it depends on whether you've played the game or not - if you have, you're almost certain to recognize it.

The Bard 27-06-2009 12:52 PM

The only good part bout it is that even though I'm not always sure which game is it, I can pretty much narrow it down to a series or two and then guess...
And now that I got like 70% of it solved, I really hope that's fit for the consolation prize...

Panthro 27-06-2009 01:48 PM

Should the question about the Mayor in Fallout include the town that he is mayor of?

Also, loving the quiz, it's tough though! I think I'll be handing in a very patchy set of answers.

riccso 27-06-2009 02:31 PM

Is the screenshots from AB?And what about Cryptograms and Guess the Game; only abandonware/old games or newer ones?(FF's Spelling Wizard don't know the word "abandonware"...shameful!)

No but some games have similar screenshots on AB. Over half the screenshots have recognisable elements that you'll see on screenshots of Abandonia as well.

Are wrong answers detrimental to the score or are they equal to a blank answer?

I'm not that evil ;). You can guess as much as you want without any negative result.

A tip to everyone: several games (more than 5) in the screenshot section already appeared in the previous questions - as (possible) answers or in the question itself.

red_avatar 27-06-2009 05:34 PM

I corrected one mistake in the anagram section - one of the entries had an S too much in the anagram so make sure to discount one of the two S's.

Thank god. The reason I asked that is because in the screenshot guessing contest held years ago there were detrimental scores for wrong answers (if I recall correctly). I guess Kosta is the evil one then :p

Capo 27-06-2009 06:07 PM

Nice, i will partecipate.

Zalamel 27-06-2009 08:37 PM

Cool!!! I hope I win something lol

Good luck guys!

Batmanifestdestiny 27-06-2009 10:10 PM

hm.....I probably won't do this, since I didn't get any of the anagrams, practically none of the screenshots, and maybe one monkey question...

I knew it had to be a mistake! :D I guessed it already but it had an extra S, and it was just too close to be a coincidence.

RRS 28-06-2009 05:25 AM

^^ yeah, found that, too

My congratulations - really nice contest. Games in such communities often end up as quiz made of trivia unworthy of attention of anyone but the hardcore geeks. This contest has diffrent kinds of questions, requires knowledge of old games - you can't get high score by just googling or lucky random picks. It gives the contestant that nice feeling "hey, I have an actual chance to win!".

Well you can still win a prize by just entering - and I think a lot of people won't get any of the anagrams which is curious - I let my brother solve them first to make sure they were doable :p.

RRS 28-06-2009 07:12 AM

^^ anagrams turned out to be easy - got 9 out of 10 :P

I agree. The anagrams were the easiest ones by far; there are more harder things to worry about like having to answer questions about games you've never even heard of :)

The Bard 28-06-2009 03:59 PM

To me, it seems the screenshots part is by far the hardest, since there is no way of getting it right if you haven't played the game in mention. And even if you have, it's still hard to remember it. And the "guess the" parts are also a bit fuzzy, since some only have two words to guess from...

The screenshots were nearly all taken from the start of the game - I made sure of that - and most were from pretty well known parts of the game as well. I'm sorry but most are big classics so if you've never played them ... I actually thought I was giving away the answers.

Stop giving them hints. People, you're supposed to do better than everyone else, not answer all questions correctly. Here only humans participate. Robots not allowed. :) So everyone's in the same pot, having the same difficulties as you. If someone played that game and you didn't... it just means he was better than you at that screen, there are still tens of other questions to make a difference in oyour favour.

red_avatar 28-06-2009 05:09 PM

Also, may I add that it's NOT the goal to get all answers right. The goal is to have the MOST answers right.

Tomekk 28-06-2009 05:45 PM

A question with the anagrams: Are the letters mixed between the words, or each word in the title just has switched up letters?

Nope. When I get your PM with the answers, that is all I need.

All the results are entered into an Excell file with the points everyone gets per category - then all these get counted together for the final score. It automatically calculates the average score as well so when the contest is over, the last question will be answered automatically :). I'll also post stats on how well everyone did in each category to give you an idea of how well you did compared to the rest.

Gilrond 29-06-2009 01:03 PM

All in all, a very good contest

I think this is a relevant question for everyone so I'm not sending a PM:

Does this mean we have to send a PM until 23:59 on July 4th? Or do we have the Sunday? Whichever it is, what time zone is relevant?

I'm looking forward to see how many answers the best guys get, I'm afraid they'll manage close to 100 :(

Any time zone - it's not going to make the world come to an end if it's an hour or two late ;). But I'll be correcting everything on monday afternoon so it better be all submitted by then.

Ok, maybe I'm nitpicking here, but does it literally mean that there's time travel involved in the plot of the game or it is just a way of saying that the game has a prehistoric setting?

There's plenty of hints in the question to be honest - if you know the game, you should have no trouble answering the question but I can't tell you any more than that - wouldn't be fair to those that already sent me their answers.

puuuhh...

i have seen hard quizzes, but this quiz is THE hardest quiz i've ever seen :hypno::hypno:
totally crazy :) Some questions require extreme research or are even worth replaying a game ;)

Yup, I actually DID play one game to get the answer because I wasn't sure anymore. Only had to play 5 Minutes into the game though ;)

The anagrams are indeed hard, I'm still missing two. I'm more mathematical thinker rather than a lingual, that's my problem ;)

ltsajber 30-06-2009 10:55 AM

Very cool contest! Nice work!

Chicho 01-07-2009 06:49 PM

Nice im still on time! i'll start working on it and send my answers soon. if i win i want afterlife.

So when can we expect the answers to be published?

Poker Crow 02-07-2009 04:51 AM

Ok, I've exhausted all my gaming knowledge and googling skills. I gotta leave town so I guess I'll have to send my answers now (bummer, cause I could have really used the remaining days). I just wanted to say thanks to Red avatar for this great quiz, it's been a lot of fun. There's some devilishly hard questions in there, I wonder whether anyone will be able to get a perfect score (I hope not, cause I REALLY want to win that first prize :p). Now it's time to relax and hope for the best, good luck to everyone!!

red_avatar 02-07-2009 05:05 AM

Thanks for joining Poker-Crow :)

And: I will release the answers and the scores on monday afternoon GMT.

pc_cheater 02-07-2009 05:27 AM

Im going to join. This contest is looks hard, but I like it, even if I don't get any prize I'll win a lot of experience :). Hey guys, save me a copy of Diablo please!

-to red_avatar about the random question:
how am I supouse to know the amount of people who entered the contest?

p.s. I don't have so much experience, im only 14, so wish me luck

That's why it's called a random question.
You don't know how many people will have entered the contest at the end, I don't know that... and Red Avatar won't know until he receives the last entries.

It's like those "how many beans are in the jar" guessing contests. Everyone picks a number they feel is the correct one and the closest answer wins.

Biopharmer 03-07-2009 07:01 AM

This may sound really retarded, but how the heck do I PM on this site?

red_avatar 03-07-2009 09:35 AM

I see you discovered how :)

Ludicus Maximus 03-07-2009 11:32 AM

The cryptograms (and to a lesser extent the anagrams) were fun, even though I didn't find them all. They should be made into a forum game.

Guderheinz 03-07-2009 01:03 PM

Yes, the cryptograms were a terrific idea (I can't wait to know what 7.9 is)! Many thanks for the whole contest, for one moment when I could use my knowledge (and google skills), I didn't feel like a lunatic obsessed with silly games :p

red_avatar 03-07-2009 01:59 PM

Haha 7.9 was a favorite of mine but not that hard if you think logically.

TeaBag 04-07-2009 07:50 AM

I want Witcher! Hopefully I'll get a place, I worked my butt off, and I still didn't get them all! Had a ball though, so thanks for the fun!

TeaBag 04-07-2009 07:56 AM

Oh, and VTM: Bloodlines is absolutely fantastic for anyone given the option of picking a game.

pc_cheater 04-07-2009 02:51 PM

So far I thougt I did it well;
a few screenshots remaind and some character/title guess. But I think im gonna lose because of the cryptograms :(

6 hours left of contest. Can't wait to see the results:woot2:

Capo 04-07-2009 03:18 PM

You can send me the answers tomorrow as well. I'll start correcting them on Monday afternoon (my time) but any answers sent to me after I get home will be discounted so this will allow every for all time zones to still send me their answers on their own Sunday and they'll be accepted.

pc_cheater 04-07-2009 04:42 PM

70-75 of my answers are correct, Im sure, so I aint going to win any prize. I'll still be happy with my score. I wanna know if are going to be other contests la this in the future.

All I wanted was to have a classic video game in my collection, not downloaded (you guys know what I mean).

If I can send them tommorow (5 july) thats very very nice!
Because for today Im really tired of searching and researching. So tommorow i'll try to guess to the rest of the questions (the ones I said in my last post). Thanks!

Arteveld 05-07-2009 02:00 AM

Hey, great contest red_avatar! And great prizes too! I did my best with the questions, and surprisingly, i blazed through most of 'em (and probably got a few wrong), gotta say that anagrams are great when you have Scrabble at home.;P Only guessed on two questions, and gave up on one.. damn you 7.9, guess I'm no Spock, logic is not my superpower. Good luck to all the contestants!;)
Oh, and will the answers be revealed on Monday along with the results? Can't wait to see that 7.9.. have it on my mind for 2 days now.
[hope i was supposed to use "fast reply" from the last post, forums were never my friends]

Roxor 05-07-2009 03:45 AM

That was fun, but the anagrams were ridiculous. Just submitted my answers, and found some cool old games in the process. Good luck everyone!

Nightmare 05-07-2009 12:59 PM

Answers submitted.
phew..... t'was one hell of contest. well, you made a wonderful contest, red_avatar :)

The Bard 05-07-2009 05:00 PM

I cant wait for the answers now. AND the results...

hydr0x 05-07-2009 08:37 PM

Finally sent in my answers *phew*. Lot of googling was required for the last ones. Thankfully got all anagrams and hopefully also all cryptograms. Although I don't think 7.9 is right, it's a pure guess based on the first part of the cryptogram.

About places 2-5 being able to chose games from the lot: How is this done? I think the fairest routine would be if the 2nd spot gets to chose his three first and then the second 3rd and so on. Or people take turns, starting from 2nd place down to random winner. That way the 2nd placed gets his top choice but the random winner doesn't end up with the stuff "no one else wanted".

werticalloop 05-07-2009 09:50 PM

ah this is just my luck... decied i wont go on this web site cause i have to much to study and whene i finaly came here i find this awesom quiz... :D

red_avatar 06-07-2009 04:14 AM

In a few hours the contest will be over so this is your last chance :). Once I start correcting the last ones this afternoon, no new entries will be permitted any more.

For the next contests, I'll also add a disclaimer that participants need to make a minimal effort if they want to apply for a random gift. It was meant to encourage people to join in even if they felt they didn't have a chance of winning but some entries were really half-hearted and just skipped entire sections without even guessing multiple choice questions. Not only does this make correcting a lot slower (100 questions is slow to correct too :p ) but some effort would be appreciated.

RRS 06-07-2009 07:45 AM

Ban those lazy bums! :P

Acethor 06-07-2009 07:50 AM

Awesome competition Red... Good luck to all participants!

*crosses fingers* :p

werticalloop 06-07-2009 08:36 AM

will there be correct answers availble to non-participants?

The Fifth Horseman 06-07-2009 09:58 AM

Yeah, when the winners are announced.

The Bard 06-07-2009 10:37 AM

Well if applications are closed now, can't we see the correct answers?

Acethor 06-07-2009 10:53 AM

I only got about 30 correct answers O.o I suck bigtime

Nightmare 06-07-2009 12:04 PM

Can't wait to see the scoreboard..
Hope to get a good mark :ouch:

Capo 06-07-2009 01:58 PM

If someone has managed to reply to all the answers then he is a monster :omg:

red_avatar 06-07-2009 03:56 PM

BIG BAG OF BOOTY ANSWERS

Below you will find all the answers to the quiz. I've corrected all the questions and have all the scores but first, I want to share the answers with you. If any of you disagree with the answers, you can post your remarks here BUT my word is final. Some questions did have different obscure answers but the answers given here are the most correct:

1.1 B Before deciding on a name, they simply called him 'guy' and after saving the 'guy' sprite in the graphics program, it got as extension .brush making the file read 'guy.brush'.

1.2 D Command & Conquer
-- Tomb Raider had CD audio music in the menu and ambient sound in the game
-- Warcraft II combined MIDI with CD audio
-- Quake had CD music from Nine Inch Nails

1.3 E Gabriel Knight 2
Not hard to find if you did some searching on IMDB

1.4 A Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver)
He was not credited on the end-credits, I believe but his voice was easy to recognise.

1.5 D Lord British
Easy one - Lord British and General British were both characters named after his nickname.

1.6 B Seller of fine leather jackets
Quite a few people fell into this trap by going for the kitchen supplies one. He actually sold a stove to the dead cook in Monkey Island 2.

1.7 B M.D.K.
MURDER DEATH KILL would have increased the rating.

1.8 B The Settlers

1.9 E Alien Carnage

1.10 E Dhalsim
I suspect some disagreement but Dhalsim could just repeat his kick again and again and he would beat every opponent with just kicks! A major imbalance due to poor collision detection.

1.11 D Hell March

1.12 A A cow
A pig was part of the second Earthworm Jim.

1.13 A Robocop

1.14 A Alone in the Dark.
NOT Doom. A lot of people may not realise this (probably because they never had an original copy), but the original Doom was shipped with a manual detailing the story. Doom 3 redid that story so it WAS a remake.
Mean Streets was remade into Tex Murphy Overseer.
Settlers 2 had the 10th Anniversary edition.

1.15 C Master of Magic
Theme Park World
Constructor 2: Street Wars
Star Control 2
Fragile Allegiance

2.1 Rise of the Triad
2.2 Micro Machines
2.3 Lands of Lore
2.4 Daggerfall
2.5 Wing Commander
2.6 Grand Theft Auto
2.7 Magic Carpet
2.8 Street Fighter
2.9 Prince of Persia
2.10 Alone in the Dark

3.1 C EXTERMINATE (Dr Who)

3.2 E The Bullet

3.3 D drive one screen ahead (you could score a point by winning the race but you would not win the game).

3.4 A Killer Jokes
This was a tricky one that a lot of people fell for. The TITLE of the book is Killer Jokes. The writer was The Trixter. While the item name in Ultima VIII was "Killer Jokes of the trixter", if you opened the book it said "Killer Jokes" by the trixter.

3.5 C You remove her restrictions in exchange for getting off the hook & cybernetic implants.

3.6 B Forbidden Videos & Books (few people got this one wrong, amusingly)

3.7 D Porkenstein 3D (Wolfenstein 3D didn't even exist yet before the game was made)

3.8 E Hemming
It's even a chapter in the manual.

3.9 B Dark Sun
It's the only game that does NOT take place on Earth.

3.10 E Beneath A Steel Sky

4.1 Syd Mead
Famous for Blade Runner designs

4.2 Creation
NOT Dungeon Keeper 3. Creation was a sea game that was made around 1996, way before Bullfrog fell to pieces. It was ambitious and got a lot of coverage but it ended up getting canned.

4.3 Incredible Machine
Easy one.

4.4 Dreamweb
Another one a lot of people got right.

4.5 Michael Ironside
Almost no-one got this one wrong.

4.6 Root beer (Magic/Voodoo Anti-root is also allowed)
I made some allowances here since several answers are possible

4.7 Big Fucking Gun
This was confirmed to be the original intended name. Some called it Big Fracking Gun - a "family safe" name, but it was not the real name. Since I asked for the full name, BFG 9000 was not accepted, sorry.

4.8 California Games
Another easy one

4.9 eyes
And another one

4.10 Doom 2 level 32
Some people picked Biomenace but he was just a prisoner there and not even officially so. In Doom 2 he was hanging from a rope and you had to kill him several times. Now, THAT is "shocking" :p.

5.1 Joe King
5.2 Max
5.3 Edward Carnby
5.4 Paul Atreides
5.5 Zool (I counted the female version too)
5.6 Larry Laffer (Leisure Suit Larry also allowed)
5.7 Dizzy
5.8 Aladdin or his monkey Abu
5.9 LeChuck
5.10 Dr Brain

6.1 Little Big Adventure
6.2 James Pond
6.3 Jazz Jackrabbit
6.4 Jagged Alliance
6.5 Mega Race
6.6 Doom
6.7 Street Rod
6.8 Lemmings
6.9 Bloodnet (Vampire Masquerade also allowed)
6.10 X-Com Terror from the Deep

7.1 Another World
7.2 Alien Breed
7.3 11th Hour
7.4 Cruise for a Corpse
7.5 Dawn Patrol
7.6 Whacky Wheels
7.7 Blues Brothers
7.8 Red Baron
7.9 Paperboy
This was a fun one that nearly no-one got right :p
7.10 Nightmare on Elm Street

8.1 Master Lu
8.2 Normality
8.3 Quarantine
8.4 Retribution
8.5 Zak McKracken
8.6 Eye of Horus
8.7 Commander Keen
8.8 Ultima V
8.9 Another World/Out of This World
8.10 Cruise for a Corpse
8.11 Secret of Monkey Island
8.12 Dune
8.13 7th Guest
8.14 Alien Breed
8.15 Blake Stone
8.16 Fury of the Furries
8.17 James Pond
8.18 Syndicate
8.19 Al Quadim
8.20 Sabre Team

9.1 No-One Lives Forever
Some people answered Indiana Jones and I do vaguely recall that but it's a classic scene in NOLF where a vendor goes "You look like you need a monkey"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq5tLqTyuO0

9.2 Flight of the Amazon Queen
9.3 Aladdin
9.4 Monkey Island 2
9.5 Time Commando
Another one with a lot of wrong answers. I gave away a lot of clues though: travel back in time, the first mission is called the Pre-History and you beat up an ape.

Anyway, here they are. Before I post the results, take a good look and respond here. Tomorrow afternoon, the results will be posted.

Acethor 06-07-2009 04:07 PM

How did "Plastic girl had a sex change and became an environmentalist"

become:

Paperboy?

:)

Plastic = bad for the environment -> use paper (why do you think stores move to paper bags from plastic ones ;) )
Girl + sexchange = Boy.

Not that hard ;)

pc_cheater 06-07-2009 04:17 PM

Quote:

4.2 Creation
NOT Dungeon Keeper 3
the one I didn't make research from 4, I was sure that DK 3 is correct. pff

Quote:

7.6 Whacky Wheels
I said BC Racers because I was thinking that stone tires acts odd
Quote:

7.7 Blues Brothers
Damn, I was thinking about this one but looked silly

Quote:

7.10 Nightmare on Elm Street
I said alone in the dark because is more popular, Nightmare I counted as a possibillity.

:ouch: Ouch!

are thre prizes for the effort?
about the results: why tommorow?

Acethor 06-07-2009 04:20 PM

@Red if it wasn't that hard then why did nearly no-one get it right? :)

hydr0x 06-07-2009 04:28 PM

damn, only ever played the demo of Time Commando and didn't remember it that well

my answer was Primal Rage which in the broad sense of the question could have been right (we as players travel to a prehistorics setting and one of the enemies, actually two, are apes)

Made a stupid mistake with screenshot 4, I though the graphics style has to be Wing Commander and I just assumed I never encountered this particular character. Retribution I actually own but have never played :(

The Paperboy one was hard because "Plastic Girl" immediately makes you think of Barbie. It never occurred to me to look for a game with "Boy" in the title because of that :(

hydr0x 06-07-2009 04:31 PM

Also, could you PLEASE tell us who won today. Tomorrow we cannot order the pre-order Tales of Monkey Island Edition anymore. And we can't order today because we might have won. Would be much appreciated.

Panthro 06-07-2009 04:49 PM

Ah well, I hope I'm one of the random winners cos I have no chance of getting a high score!

Good quiz, but was hella difficult (especially since I didn't google any answers).

I myself downloaded the shareware version of Duke Nukem 3d and played through to the second level just to get that answer right. I wouldn't be surprised if many other contestants did the same.

Also, I hope that you accept "eyeballs" as an answer for the question about the navigator's necklace in Monkey Island. Not that the one point will do much of a difference, but still... :sneaky:

The first prize has already been ordered - the winner gets the Telltale account which he can then change to his email address of choice.

Good quiz, but was hella difficult (especially since I didn't google any answers).

Considering 5 people had over 90/100 questions right, it was a good thing I made it that difficult.

The reason I'm only releasing the winners' names tomorrow is to double and triple check everything and to also write out a post concerning the prizes. A system will be made to award the games - this to avoid the second spot running away with the three best games.

Capo 06-07-2009 05:06 PM

I've really enjoied this quiz, my only complain regards cryptograms: Paper boy ? Blues Brothers ?

Ah, you can finish sf2 very easily also with Blanka ;)

One question: 5.8 Aladdin is correct ? The question talk about character name, not characters.

Well the point was that one exact base move repeated would beat any opponent. You didn't even have to move to do so.

Aladdin WAS a character - Abu was his monkey. Aladdin was the real answer but I can see why the 'monkey' keyword was confusing and except for the apples, it does fit the monkey very well (he carries a sword in the bonus missions).

MoveS. ;). I'm talking about hammering JUST the kick button, nothing else, and winning the game. Not even moving, not using other moves. His long legs are what made this work - the opponent would get hit from halfway across the screen.

pc_cheater 06-07-2009 05:45 PM

I still feel like a winner. I stored lot of new knowledge about gaming history:idea:.

It was fun & tough.

ThemePark 06-07-2009 06:11 PM

Well, I am glad to see I didn't fall for many of those traps. It pays off to do some thorough research. :) If you looked at Wikipedia, you'd actually see all the jobs listed that that guy had. I'm especially glad I didn't go with DK3 at first, but kept researching, so no trap there for me. And seeing as I haven't played most of the games from the screenshot part, no wonder I didn't recognize them.

hydr0x:
Yeah, I immediately thought of Barbie as well. Didn't seem to make sense though, so I gave up on answering that one.

Guderheinz:
I was able to find a video of that map of Duke Nukem 3D, so I didn't have to play it. I did however play through Beneath A Steel Sky to get that answer. And yeah, I also hope eyeballs is accepted, but I don't see why it shouldn't.

Capo:
Yeah, initially I was going to go with Blanka as well, as I clearly remember getting through most of the game with no problems, using Blanka. But then I looked through the thread, and many people actually mentioned Dhalsim being unfair.

Anyway, this was a fun little quiz, and it proved to be quite challenging for the last half.

The Bard 06-07-2009 06:14 PM

I really thought white, red gloves, fantastic was Ryu from Street Fighter. But if 5 ppl had over 90, then I know I didn't win, so meh...

fjj 06-07-2009 07:40 PM

The plastic girl was mind-boggling!

I actually came to the idea that "boy" must be in the title and searched for such titles. Of the few results, Paperboy caught my eye, but somehow I couldn't fit in the plastic environmentalist.

I abandoned that path and focused instead on plastic. At first I thought about variants of fake, virtual, but then the idea: if you imagine something plastically, it's like you could almost feel the shape - hence 3D must be in the title! So wrong...

Great contest. I loved the fact that questions were of various types, especially the cryptograms were awesome.

Well, I didn't try looking for videos, BUT I on the other hand found the answer to the Beneath a Steel Sky question from Wiki. Figured playing through an adventure game would be a bit too much (i never played it before and don't know when that part with the robot comes in).

I came to the same conclusion as well. It's a perfectly acceptable answer given the 3 words.

I also had Conker for furry, psychotic, grinning. Sam definatly fits the description also.

I think i got about 65-70 questions right so didn't win anyway but it was definalty fun.

mendicant 06-07-2009 09:43 PM

Wow, I didn't do as badly as a I thought! I'm well chuffed. Still failed on the picture round though. Excellent quiz! If you ever need a hand red_avatar, give me a yell. It was great fun.

Arteveld 06-07-2009 10:49 PM

Dang, i sent my answers after 2 days of brain-boiling thinking, and on the next day, while driving to work, with the window open, Paperboy suddenly hit my mind, and boy, was as mad.;)

About the red gloves, i thought about Ryu too, mainly due to the new SF4 game, but then i decided to check the other SF games and red gloves were not there. I've played the Dizzy games back on my C-64 with a monochrome monitor, for me, he had green gloves, and a green shell, good thing i deciced to check out how they looked on a PC [a few cool remakes came out].

If i was mean, i'd ask about "mask, aligator, puma, molotov coctail", and see how many people had the misfortune of playing the horrid PC versions of The Last Ninja 2.

I'm surprised i didn't do that bad, and if my math is correct, i could be in the lucky 5!:woot2:

I really doubt, that I'm one of the lucky winner. Abandoniacs are just far better than an ordinary nostalgic person such as myself could be. Nevertheless, I think that I've got no reason to feel embarrassed. So thanks for the great and challenging contest!

But HONOUR TO WHOM HONOUR IS DUE! :monkey:

Hehe, I never played Duke Nukem 3d, so I went to youtube and some people had clips of them playing second level

I also wrote eyeballs, btw.

I'm proud that I did all anagrams correct - that was some brain excersise. With the first one, I figured out 'The Rise of' part and then went to wikipedia :p but all the others I got on my own.

I'm less proud with the fact that the only other section that I gave all correct answers was section 3 - I really knew only one answer 3.9 and googled all the others.

And I feel lucky that only two answers I decided to have a guess proved to be correct :p 1.2 though I knew it wasn't Warcraft II or Tomb Raider, so it made guessing easier and 1.10 where I never played Street Fighter II and no obvious answer would come from googling.

But screenshots killed me. There were even a few familiar, but I couldn't figure out where from...

All in all great competition and heaps of fun.

Thexder 07-07-2009 12:08 AM

I just cannot believe I wrote Sam instead of Max.. :wall:

Oh, well. Since I am under 90, now I wait to see if I am lucky enough to win something through the random pick. But, who cares -- it was a lot of fun to research a bit about these games. Thanks for the contest, red_avatar!

Cheers, Thex.

P.S.: C'mon, my "Transformers: Battle to Save the Earth" was a much better answer than "Paperboy"! After all, (i) they are plastic in their original form, (ii) girls-to-boys (Transform-ISTS), and (iii) they are trying to Save the Earth! Fair enough, this was EXTREMELY obscure, probably did not even make it to the PC, but... well, I have to complain about something, right? :bleh2: ;)

The first prize is the Tales of Monkey Island Pre-Order bundle. Second place through Fifth place each receive 3 games.
(rules follow below)

Three more prizes have been awarded:

Random prize for Klatuu and RRS (randomly picked using a number generator)
Also a prize for zirkoni who had the best answer for question 10 (68).

These three get to each pick a game from the list (rules follow below).

PRIZE RULES

Okay, to keep things fair, the 4 runner-ups each need to make a list of 10 games with each game in order according to how badly they want the game. For example:

1. Diablo
2. Realms of the Haunting
3. etc.
...
10. The Dig

I will then award each one of the winners with three games according to their list.

The three random winners each get to pick from what is left of the list (don't worry, plenty of good stuff will remain).

Also, a lot of the games in the list come without a manual. This is unavoidable due to the age of some of these games. Nearly all recent games (less than 10 years old) come in their original DVD case WITH manual.

i dint even have time for the screen shots and other parts i just skip cause i didnt find enough time. On treet fiegther 2 mi little brother beat the game with guile doin only the sonic boom without movin doin only that one move so that was my answer guile but i guess thats not a "basic" move so i was wrong :(

ThemePark 07-07-2009 05:53 AM

Hmm, I was a bit unsatisfied with 1.14 not being Alone in the Dark which I knew had been remade, until I just now realized that I did the same mistake I always do, and mistake Alone in the Dark for Another World (which has been remade). Subsequently I didn't research it. That one question hurts. :(

I was going either with Barbie... or Ken :D

Wow, I knew I'd be in the Top 5, but I really thought someone was able to do 98/99. Can't believe the tie breaker was necessary either! Incredibly close competition, I'm glad I didn't settle with 90+ and spent a few hours extra to look up the last few answers...

Thanks so much for this contest, it was a lot of fun to compete, although some very deep Google digging was necessary for some of the things I didn't know. Having only played the SNES version of Aladdin (which is completely different) I had no idea about 9.3 and actually searched google for stuff like "monkey bonus flowerpot" which obviously isn't very productive ;)

Congratulations to all other winners too, there are some very nice games to chose from. I'm really looking forward to play the new MI, thanks a lot red. I guess you'll send me a PM about the account transfer?

Dave 07-07-2009 11:38 AM

Congratulations guys

Arteveld 07-07-2009 11:55 AM

Woot! I kinda knew i was close, but i never expected to be 2nd, so cool!

Kudos red_avatar!

Congrats to all the other competitors, especially hydr0x, for the knowledge and especially better maths than mine. I'll get You next time!;)

So i'm off to pick my booty!;D

Yep :) I'll give it a day or two to make sure no-one has anything to protest about (can't be safe enough) - after all, a few years ago I was in your shoes and had the first place snatched away from me after a complaint :p.

Who all and why?

That random question was just a lucky guess (well, I did think I would score a bit above the average and I knew I'd get about 80 correct answers )

I can tell you which 4 I did wrong:

Cryptograms:
Paperboy

Screenshots:
Retribution & Syndicate

Monkey Fun:
Time Commando

I think all of those had correct answers given.

Arteveld 07-07-2009 10:45 PM

I've failed to do a proper research on the Bullfrog's cancelled title, the dreadful Paperboy, and the first and the last Monkey question.

I've also made a math fail on the additional question. No comment.;P

The Syndicate screenshot was a clever one, i remember there was a purple sky and a zeppelin like thing in the intro, but this shot was made from the "you won the game" outro, i backed up the intro animation file, and replaced it with the other animations just to be sure i was right, this quiz spoiled Syndicate a bit for me, as i've never finished it, but i guess it's about time i play it to the end.;P

are you the guy who didn't get that we were supposed to give an average? I vaguely recall someone complaining about having to guess the number of participants...

hydr0x: Well, i did't google enough then, i concentrated on that "developement diary" and found zilch, so i decided to shoot, i've found out about the contest 2 days before it's end, and was kinda scared i won't make the answers in time.;P

It is true, i didn't quite get the average question (perhaps because I'm mathematicly disabled/handicaped, it'd be easier if the question was about giving a "percent of correct answers" [which is the same, but sounds more like it]), but i've never complained about anything here.;)

Just in case You were wonderng, my brillant answer to question 10 was.... 1500, go ahead, have a laugh.;P

Chicho 08-07-2009 05:16 AM

How many people took part on this contest?

red_avatar 08-07-2009 05:31 AM

61 in total. I may make a contest in layers next time - release a new part every two days or so to encourage people to join in. 100 questions right from the start may be a bit intimidating :p

An idea for a next contest is to mimic the old screenshot contest from a few years back but with a twist: merge two games in a single screenshot and the contest will be to identify both games. For example, Guybrush Threepwood placed in Loom or a Lemming in Syndciate, etc.

I'm surprised the number of people participating wasn't higher, since there were random prizes available. I can't wait for the next quiz, this one helped me discover so many awesome old games I havn't tried yet.

I think it was really the scale of the contest that scared people away + I think a lot of people amused there would be a lot of entries so the chance of winning anything would be lower. Still, when you see that the average amount of correctly answered questions was 68.4 ... that's pretty damn high for a contest that was not exactly easy to do.

Foo 08-07-2009 07:01 AM

Aw, so close, lol. Great job, guys, this was fun. :)

Sarlix 08-07-2009 07:49 AM

I don't think I have ever been into a shop that uses paper bags, apart from greengrocers, they all use plastic....

Anyway Red you thought it was not that hard because your the one who thought of it!

If I was to say to you (weird, spitting, hamster,) could you guess what character or game that refers to eh? could you eh?

Plus I thought this quiz was just about dos games, but you included a mix of dos, Amiga, console, pc ?

/Tries to justify embarrassing score

I'd be curious where you'd find a console/Amiga-only game ;).

And if someone can get 96/100, it's a sign that making the quiz easier would have meant a lot of 100/100 scores which is something I really did not want since it would have made people feel cheated if they did get all questions right without winning.

I was surprised at the final scores, 20 people scored in the 80's region!, but how much of that was down to googling I wonder?.... Did the screenshot and cryptograms sections of the quiz see the lowest amount of correct answers?

But answering F is just priceless, or a weird sense of humor, lol.

congrats to everyone, the scores were good, there were no really low ones.

Poker Crow 08-07-2009 09:39 PM

I'm back in town and I feel kind of disappointed I didn't win the first place :(. I put A LOT of effort to get the answers and what kills me is that I could have won but I made some bad decisions and missed 3 of my 5 wrong answers because of that:

- I almost guessed Red Baron but I thought "It cannot be, Manfred von Richthofen wasn't a communist"... idiot me I should have known that red=communist DOH!

- that screenshot of Zack McKracken, now I regret not having played that game... even though I knew it looked like the great face on Mars I couldn't link it for sure to any game. Almost made the wild guess of Zak McKracken just because of the Mars theme but no... I had to send a blank answer. Again... stupid me.

- Time Commando was also an answer I had considered. I knew there was time travel and apes because of some screenshots but not having played the game I didn't knew whether there was a BIG ape or not. However I played Primal Rage and knew there were big apes and a prehistoric setting. My plea for clarification regarding time travel was denied so I got inclined in favor of Primal Rage just because it was a proper fighting game (like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc.).

The remaining 2 wrong answers were beyond me... never played Master Lu, and even though I browsed throught half of Mobygames that particular screenshot never caught my eye so bad luck I guess. And the criptogram about Paperboy was EXTREMELY criptic and in fact makes no sense at all. The sex change part was easy, I knew it meant boy or man... but the environmentalist=paper part is not right IMO. We humans have to cut down trees to make paper you know, so using paper does not make people environmentalist. NOT using paper (or recycling it) is what makes people environmentalist. Paper might be less contaminating than plastic when disposing it but abusing its use without recycling is very damaging to the nature as well. Reusable cloth bags are the ecofriendlier choice. Sorry about the uncalled lecture, but I'm a biologist so I had to take that out of my system ;).

Getting back on tipic I guess winning the third place is not bad at all, but I feel bummed cause I was so close and because I really wanted the preorder of Tales of Monkey Island. I can still buy the games but I missed that sweet preorder edition and now it's impossible to get :crybaby:.

Anyway, now please have some patience Red Avatar I just got back in town and I gotta do some thinking before deciding my list of games for the prize.

Congrats to the lucky winners!

O_o

IT WAS announced on the main page...

red_avatar 09-07-2009 03:38 AM

I already had to really rush to get the contest ready in time so there would at least be a day left for people to order the pre-order edition which wasn't easy - and a Sunday was the ideal time to end the contest since a lot of people only have time during weekends for such a big contest.

All in all, I doubt you can complain when you got that many answers right :p. Only a few people got Paper Boy right anyway - it was always meant to be a hard one to guess (although paper is about a million times more environmentally friendly than plastic ;) - plastic does not decompose AT ALL).

About Time Commando: if I had given you the time travel clue completely (if was already hidden in the question) it would have been unfair to all the others.

But please don't wait too long with your list of games - everyone else is waiting to know which games he'll get and I can't tell them until I know which ones you got listed.

I want the rain to come, that is why I did it. It's too hot in last couple of days :hypno:

Don't worry Red Avatar, it's not like I'm saying it's your fault or anything. Actually fate conspired against me cause I had to go to work in the field for a week (no internet there :sucks:) and I just came back on Wednesday, so I wasn't present when the winner was announced and missed the preorder deadline at the same time. Bummer. My game list won't take long, I'll submit it to you before Friday ends. My apologies to all the winners, I know you're eagerly awaiting to learn which games you'll get but please bear with me a little more. Sorry about that.

I am still shocked that there wasn't even one Day Of The Tentacle question :omg: I lost points because of this!

But there wasn't a day left to order it and I pointed it out too. You announced the winner after the pre-order phase had ended. I made a gamble and just prayed I did win but I was in the same unfortunate situation as Crow, I even considered preordering it anyways and selling the duplicate account in case I win :/ So, I can understand where he's coming from. But then again, I understand quite as well how much time you have to spend on something like this ;)

@Crow

I understand your frustration, but then again, its a competition and only one can win. Rest assured though that us others put in a lot of effort too. Well, at least I did, Arteveld claimed he basically breezed through the questions. I hope you'll get over your frustration and will be able to enjoy the three excellent games you're getting for free.

The Primal Rage fault wouldn't have helped ya anyways. I answered Primal Rage too, so I'd still would have had one more than you if he accepted it. You didn't get 2 screenshots, just like me. And you didn't get Paperboy just like me. So basically it was your Red Baron blunder that cost you a tie (not sure about the better tie-breaker though, the average was 68,4 and I guessed 71). I didn't get that one first either, was one of the last 10 questions I got, it actually occurred to me while sleeping :omg:

Not true - the pre-order was still running for a day. Trust me, I visited the Telltale site a dozen times to see if the first episode was released yet :p

hydr0x 09-07-2009 03:28 PM

As far as I could tell they just hadn't updated their site (which did state a fixed date though), when you actually ordered it you weren't getting the pre-order goodies anymore. Besides, even if it was available longer than they said before there was no way you could have anticipated this, so essentially we all had to risk losing out on the pre-order box. Just saying ;)

Arteveld 09-07-2009 10:56 PM

Can't wait to see which games i'll get!:)

How about a big bad flood? Your city didn't get one yet? I could spawn one just for You, got some mana left.;)

Yeah, I'm happy I got a prize and there's some good games to choose from, however Monkey Island has a special place in my heart. I'm sure many people put a lot of time and effort as well. Personally I browsed though the screenshots of every DOS game listed at Mobygames and Abandonia, read tons of descriptions and did some serious googling. I almost felt like a detective... did anybody else notice that checking Red Avatar's profile gave away a several answers? (every one of his favorite games was featured somewhere in the quiz, hehe). Sadly I had to submit my answers 4 days early because of me leaving town, I'm sure that with those extra days things would have been different. Anyway, congrats Hydr0x you sure deserved to win.

I would have lost to you in a tie breaker (I guessed 50) but here's how I could have won: wild guessing Zak McKracken in the screenshot (something I actually considered) instead of leaving it blank, and opting for Time Commando instead of Primal Rage (another answer I had considered). My real mistake here was waiting too long to ask for clarification regarding the key hint of time travel. Red Avatar wisely denied it to me cause the extra clarification would have been unfair to people who already submitted the answers. Perhaps if I had asked that as soon as I thought about it he'd have granted me an answer. Oh, and with a little more time in my hands I'm sure I would have got the Red Baron answer. That'd have put me two points ahead of you. Oh well, why do I like to beat a dead horse? I better get back to write down my game list. It's almost done!

:omg::hypno: Mobygames: 4,682 DOS games with 42,888 screenshots :omg::hypno:
You did lots of work there. I spent only a few hours trying to find the answers I didn't already know. Guessed the rest and scored 81.

red_avatar 10-07-2009 08:46 AM

Every contest like this will require effort if you really want to win - a good basis helps a lot but good Googling skills just as much :)

Anyway, I got the 10 games from Poker Crow so this afternoon I'll see who gets what and post it here :). Hydr0x will get his first prize as well - there's been plenty of time for people to complain so they had their chance to do so.

hydr0x 10-07-2009 09:01 AM

btw, I browsed all Abandonia screenshots too in a desperate last minute move and actually got two answers out of that ;)

About Primal Rage. See, the thing is, I was confident this was correct and if he had clarified this in public like you wanted him too I'd have known it isn't correct and investigated further. So you can't say this would have mattered. Not putting in ANY answer for the Zak screenshot despite having a feeling is, well, stupid :ouch:

Actually, two hours after I submitted my answers I was looking at a game I just got (S.T.O.R.M.) and the ad within actually showed a screenshot of Time Commando, clearly showing you with an ape. So with a bit more luck I'd have gotten that one ;) And the one screenshot mistake I made, a friend of mine told me later that he'd had known it and I was stupid for not even asking him about those ;) So yeah, basically we all made mistakes that cost us more right answers :) Oh, on a sidenote, I'm a big MI fan too, it was actually my first adventure ever.

Yeah, that was really tedious but it's not like I clicked on every one of those 42,888 screenshots. I just gave a quick glance at the thumbnails page of each game, otherwise I wouldn't have missed the Master Lu screenshot. But it was well worth it, I got seven of the screenshots I didn't recognize plus leads to several answers by doing this.

Yep :) I'll need an address to send the games to after all.

Poker Crow 13-07-2009 03:04 AM

Great, got 2 out of my 3 top picks. Thanks a lot, it was a very good contest.

red_avatar 13-07-2009 03:32 AM

I'll need all your addresses of course :) (in Pm)

RRS 13-07-2009 05:55 AM

my comments on the contest

OK, now that the contest is over I can throw my 2 cents (or 3 grosze).

First of all - I liked it. And I mean it - not because I got consolation prize. I liked it when I applied, as it presented itself as a good riddle to solve and it also gave the contestant that pleasant feeling "I've got a chance to win ..and it's greater than 1:1000".

As I do realize it took a while to prepare the questions, I'd like to comment on them, expecting future contests to come.

Multiple choice questions (1, 3) were not that hard: not only you have like 20% chance with a random shot, but googling information was fairly easy. With all online databases about games and documentation depositories these days even straight answers (4) weren't that bad to solve.

Anagrams (2) seemed insanely tricky at first, 'till I found an online tool that served as an aid :) Still, this tool is unable to help with non-dictionary words (Daggerfall), so I recommend using such titles next time to nullify the input of helpful anagram-solving programs.

The most fun were guessing games and cryptograms (5,6,7) as there was no way to cheat. If the set of words didn't ring the bell in your mind (and it wouldn't if you hadn't play the game before) you won't even wild guess an answer. My recommendation for the next quiz!

Screenshot fun was fun indeed! I'm so glad they were trimmed, as interface can be often so obvious it would give away the answer. My recommendation for the next quiz!

red_avatar 13-07-2009 07:40 AM

Glad you enjoyed it :). We'll have more contests in the future - there's already quite a few ideas in the running actually.

hydr0x 14-07-2009 10:40 AM

Could you please answer my PM, I'll be away on a holiday soon and want to sort this out before.

LionXavier 16-07-2009 07:48 PM

Well, owning an original copy of Little Big Adventure is an old dream of a brother of mine coming true, and in addition to this I happen to get the other two hard-to-find classics I chose as my second and third picks, so things couldn't be better for me.

Thanks a lot to red_avatar for this great Big Bag of Booty (Big indeed ;)) Contest, and congratulations to the other winners and also to the rest of participants for the high average amount of correct answers (far above my predicted 37 *^_^)

Oh, and special congratulations to hydr0x, the supreme winner of the Biggest Prize of the Big Bag of Booty. I hope you enjoy Tales of Monkey Island and dedicate us one of your first playthroughs :)
