A nice gem been added to the site. :)

I played that game a long while ago and very little keep it from going to the rank of perfect 5 on 5 game. A must try for about anyone. :ok:

Borodin 01-01-2005 11:23 AM

This is the kind of strategy/RPG title I really like: apparently open-ended, though there's a goal (of sorts) and a lot of smaller missions along the way. Combat was frustrating, as I recall, with the keyboard not responding fast enough to input. However, that was years ago, when the title first appeared. I'll probably try it again, now that you've got it available. I remember being entertained by the personalities of the different space races you encountered, and the variety of tasks available.

It was published by Gametek, a company that grew rapidly and (after a short introductory period) didn't provide reviewers with product. I was told once by one of their PR reps that they only needed advertising in the magazines and branding to get sales. Their problem was that they entered the game field suddenly, so they didn't have branding, and their games were too uneven (all made by outside developers) to generate huge sales by ads, alone. They imploded soon after. It wasn't a great loss, because they never gave an impression of being more than a corporation making money off game sales: a sort of precursor to today's mega-super-giant-uber-gaming companies who care far less about innovation and quality than fluctuations in the their stock on world exchanges.

this game seems neat! i read a LOT of sci fi and i think the game designers for this game mustve too.. cos theyve borrowed some good stuff.

Nemesis 01-01-2005 11:48 AM

This game looks neat! I'll download it for sure! :ok:

BLOODUK 01-01-2005 12:58 PM

I like the sound of it , screenshots look good apart from the last one :P
ill give it a try now

BLOODUK 01-01-2005 01:11 PM

I dont like it as soon as i enter any space with those enemies one shot and im dead , and the voices are rather annoying :P , could do with a better combat system i feel.

Thanks for the upload though

just line up the crosshairs and fire when they go orangey triangley! also make sure you're trying to shoot the bad guy ;)
yeah the combat seems rather 'hands off' there are games with much better combat in space.. but in terms of scanning and navigating and trading its seems a lot of fun.. like you would imagine a real spaceship to be. a real spaceship would just have a computer do all the combat, so i guess they stopped short of that at least ;)

BLOODUK 01-01-2005 04:45 PM

This game kinda reminds me of ermmm derek smarts game, universal combat anybody think the same?

goblins 01-01-2005 07:37 PM

had a quick game - interesting guess gametek should have been more innovative and less sales driven but many a game developer still falls by the wayside for these and other reasons

Game it self still as stated seems a bit unbalanced reply value fairly low.

Borodin 01-01-2005 09:41 PM

[quote] had a quick game - interesting guess gametek should have been more innovative and less sales driven but many a game developer still falls by the wayside for these and other reasons

They weren't a game developer; they bought and released games made by a host of others. Some were good; many were not. The problem with such companies is that they're frequently run by people who haven't the slightest interest in either games, or the people who play them.

For those who use dosbox or any other dos emulator and don't get any sound, simply open the nomad.cfg on the notepad and change SB27 to SB25 to get sound.
But beware, this might crash the game during the intro, right after the ship crashes. If that happens, you can try to download the version found on the underdogs (http://the-underdogs.org/game.php?name=Nomad), which doesn't have the intro sequence.
Good luck and good gaming. :Titan:

the 7 or 5 is the irq for the soundblaster

if you needed to change it to 25 from 27 it means you have dosbox set to use irq 5

i recommend using d-fend frontend

All versions have sound and intro!!!
In the config file there are lines saying something like:

intro=no
sound=no

If you delete these lines you get both the intro and the sound (yes even in the file you'd download from the very user unfriendly and cold site of the underdogs).

This little unknown gem is one of my favorite games. Ever.

Quite a bold statement, I know, but if you give the game a chance, it'll really shine through. The combat system, I know, is very simplistic. But combat should be the last thing on your mind.

You see, this game is about exploration, trade, story, characterization, imagination. There are just so many little details that you can come across. There are at least three main threads you can follow to the game's end that I have found; there may be more. There is also a whole lot of optional stuff to do, and a lot of characters to meet. This is an adventure game, remember, not a shooter.

All of the alien races are unique and interesting. While you'll find patterns within each race, there are still plenty of unique character interactions to be found. I highly recommend this game to any adventure game lover.

If anyone wants to discuss this game with me, send an email my way at Cabbage_86@hotmail.com.

I also am having a hard time getting this game to install. Any tips/tricks?? I loved this game a long time ago, I'd love to re-play it!

too bad it seems there is no real walkthrough
i'm still puzzled about that kenelm race,
and ex-class korok and the gateway,
and if you can get shasa to join alliance,
and what's with M'uret?many creatures mention her but I haven't met her
some other things too

----------------SPOILERS AHEAD-------------------

Did you find the Kenelm home planet? You need the Eye of Kenelm to get them to talk, which you can get off of one of the Pharump (sp?). I believe it's E'erick orbitting the planet Ar'rkive.

For the EX robots, you need to do various things for each of them...I kinda forgot, but one needs the random generator to function, which I believe you can also get from E'rick.

You can trade for the Spikes of the Last One from M'uret, which allows you to talk to some of the Bellocosians without getting shot at, and some plot stuff from talking to her. You'll have to explore a little to find her, she's kinda hard to track down.

The Shasaa are a puzzle. To this day, I haven't quite figured out how to deal with them. I know that I have to get my hands on something called the Proto-uni translator, which is supposed to translate what they say, but I've yet to figure out how to get it.

Email me at Cabbage_86@hotmail.com if you need more.

The Cabbage 07-04-2005 06:44 AM

I'm the biggest authority on this game that I've been able to track down, which is kinda sad, haha. I really should make a walkthrough/faq for the game and post it on GameFAQs.com...and replay the game again so I can refamiliarize myself with all the details.

kharny 13-04-2005 08:21 AM

Heya, have a bit of an issue with this fella, everything works okay(didn't really install anything, just running the .exe) sound etc work in dosbox. Only problem is, after saving the game with timelock, if i try to load it later, it just sits there, doing noting at all.... Anyone know how to solve this?
kharnyAThotmailDOTcom

Sebatianos 13-04-2005 02:40 PM

After loading the game it puts you back to the timelock... Just continue from there on - like you would if you wouldn't exit the game after saving (onless you have another problem...). Never heard of this game freezing yet.

kharny 14-04-2005 06:01 AM

Okay, found out the problem, the mounting was done with subdir not included correctly, so dosbox issue. all working okay now and enjoying the game.

The Chaos Element 27-04-2005 01:52 PM

:w00t: This game kicks behind! :w00t:

This is my 1st time playing a space adventure game. I usually like high-fantasy rpg's like Diablo, but when I read the review on abandonia, I decided to try it out.

I can't get enough EMS for sound, :not_ok: but the way I hear people talking here about annoying voices, I'm really not concerned anymore about finding my EMS. :bleh:

Stuff from my brain on this game:

- The Phelonese can kiss my arse. :ranting: I hate them, they are so :wall: ANNOYING!! :pissed:

- The Chanticileers have some very provocative space-wear! I think someone should hack the game and make them completely topless.

- I encountered only one of those lizard-dudes in one of the space-com missions. I decided to shoot fist :sniper: and ask questions later. I haven't seen any more of them since I nuked the first guy. Hope I didn't miss some important info from him. Oh well.

I have only one thing for the guy who uploaded this game to abandonia:

:tnx:

Sebatianos 27-04-2005 02:42 PM

You're welcome man. Enjoy the game!
And no, you haven't missed out on something that would prevent you from finishing the game. There are several ways of finishing it (I found the MCR while aimlessly crousing the space - and after I destoryed it I won the game). The game is replayable however, so you might wanna try again at a later point and not blow everybody up untill talking to them :sneaky:

Lord_Scather 13-05-2005 05:07 PM

Errr....my post regarding this game was deleted, it seems.
Why?
Didn't you get a warning or reason when this happens?

looked for other Nomad threads, too, in case I screwed up, but it simply seems not to be there........

Leo III 18-05-2005 07:35 PM

This game is pretty fun. I'm trying to make my way as a trader and not doing too badly if I do say so myself :). Among other things I discovered, you can dispatch spy bots to friendly planets in order to steal things from your allies.

Among the things I've gotten from places like Maka Bola and Retribution are:

1) More spy bots!!
2) Arden Diplomatic Pouches
3) Top Secret Equipment
4) Crystal Diplo Pouches
5) Musin Computer Banks
6) Arden Computer Banks

You'll note that #s 2 - 5 are all quest items. Yes, if you steal these items, you can turn them in to get the reward for a given quest more than once. Right now I have 4x siege shield boosters and 4x musin ceremonial sashes (or whatever the badge is).

Arch bots are also really fun. If you scan random planets, occasionally you run into ones that were previously inhabited, and sometimes these have nice and unique loot to be salvaged.

i cant figure out how to install the game. i have doxbox, but when i try to run setup.exe a screen w/ a bue box comes up, it wont let me do anything after that...any ideas??

Somewhere inside the folder, presumably.

Sebatianos 27-05-2005 02:44 PM

It's the colored icon named Nomad. You need to right click on it and select an open with... option (open it with notepad).

It can't be. It's a file from Goblins 3!

Try to download the game again.

Sebatianos 27-05-2005 07:11 PM

OK a silly question, but if you run the gob3.exe file which game starts? Are you sure you downloaded the reight game (or that you placed the question in the right topic)?

A. J. Raffles 27-05-2005 07:13 PM

Well, my Project Nomad download worked fine and there's no gob3 file in the folder. :eeeeeh: Maybe you downloaded several games and assigned the wrong name to the folder by mistake?

samtam90 27-05-2005 07:37 PM

It's sure that he has done something bad, also because Goblins 3 is no longer downloadable from Abandonia.

Gwintell 09-08-2005 04:54 AM

I was wondering if anyone else was having a problem with text pausing while viewing certain inventory items that are rather plot-sensitive (alien alloy tablet and Ex-1 head to be precise), I can't get the text to advance, and apparently I need to see the whole message before I get the losten codes (or the fact I have to tell to WR-6000/The Gauardian)

Anyone know of a solution? I have pressed every key on my keyboard (except 'D' because that exits the inventory screen)

Thanks!

Khono 14-08-2005 05:46 PM

Yay! This is one of my all-time favourite games. As someone said, it's open-ended and it has genuiine sci-fi stuff added to it. I look at most space games comnig out today and I usually compare them to this one. I haven't found a single one that measures up, despite having 10x the budget :(

Love you guys for putting it up for download :)

Oh, just a few tips for you newbies. Quietos (spelling?) missiles are the best, but they're expensive and hard to find. Bots are fun (like farming, spying, mining) but they don't net you much money. The most profitable activity is killin' stuff. Also, don't worry about trying to get ALL the missions done, because many of them you won't be able to do in combination with others simply do to time restrictions.

Have fun!

Khono 14-08-2005 06:39 PM

Erg... Okay I read all the posts here and I still can't get the sound to work. When I load the game it says there isn't enough EMS memory for sound. So in the properties of the exe I give it some EMS (and I've tried many other things from there too) and now I don't get that "not enough EMS" error, but now the game just closes right after it opens. No intro or anything.

When I run it in DOSBox, I don't get the sound error but I get that
Quote:

when I run nomad.exe i get a few lines and then the message:

"Unable to redirect output to NUL" blink.gif

NUL error. I love the sound in this game... can anyone help me? I'd just play it on my mom's 486 but I'm an hour drive from it :'(

Sebatianos 14-08-2005 07:36 PM

Here goes.
Download the game.
Unzip to the folder c:\nomad
Run DOSBox
type mount c c: press enter
type c: press enter
type cd nomad press enter
type nomad press enter
PLAY!

If the sound still doesn't work look for NOMAD.CFG file (look at it in windows. It's in the Nomad folder - it might say it's a microsoft outlook file. Open it with NOTEPAD and make sure it only says SB27 and nothing else in that file). Then run the DOSBox again.

Khono 14-08-2005 08:06 PM

I've tried all that, it doesn't work :(

Sebatianos 14-08-2005 09:55 PM

The only other change I've made that might have an effect on this is the DOSBox configuration. Look for the DOSBox.conf file. I changed the GUS setting to FALSE (maybe there's a unresolved issue of two soundcards.

Khono 18-08-2005 04:02 PM

Alright, I just tried that and it still doesn't work :( Thx anyway.

Sebatianos 18-08-2005 04:20 PM

Are you sure you're playing the game you got from our site? Try downloading the game archive again (it's set in such a way, that it should run with sound as soon as you play it).

Khono 21-08-2005 02:49 AM

Well I did as you said, downloaded it again, unzipped it, then ran it. In the intro text info stuff, it says there isn't enough ems for sound. I remember that from DOS so I know what it is. So, the sound doesn't work if I just try to run it, and when I add EMS through the nifty XP options, it still doesn't work correctly.

Also, I recently reformatted this comp so it's unlikely to be some kind of bug... What OS are you using?

Sebatianos 21-08-2005 10:02 AM

I'm using WinXP - with DOSBox .63 and it works flawlessly.

Just in case you're running low on memory (while in DOSBox) type loadfix, or maybe even better get D-Fend.

Guest 22-08-2005 09:16 PM

Im experiencing the same problems as Khono - with GUS disabled in the dosbox config file or with just starting the game in WinXP with EMS enabled manually.

Sebatianos 22-08-2005 09:21 PM

I'm affraid I can't help you much further - especially because this problem does not (and never did) occur on my computer. Sorry to say, but I can't tell you how to fix something, that I've never seen broken.
You may try to open a new topic about it in the Troubleshooting section of the forum - maybe somebody else would be able to give you better advice - there are quite a few DOSBox experts, who should be able to solve this problem.

Guest_Geordy 22-08-2005 09:30 PM

Ok, call me expert! :D
khono, our problem can be solved by following the following instruction: download the newest dosbox version.

I had dosbox 0.61.
After downloading 0.63, the game works with sound -> no more NUL error. Happy gaming!

Geordy

Sebatianos 22-08-2005 11:43 PM

That was simple (BTW I did mention that I use DOSBox .63). Well - I hope that solves the problems. Thanks Geordy! :ok:

Geordy 23-08-2005 03:47 PM

No problem! I started to play the game a bit and I have to say its good but Im a bit startled:

What do I do when being hailed? How do I answer the correct guys? I cant find the hailing party. And there are a lot of informations to be remembered. Which person cruises where, what this race likes, what that race has, and so on. Do I have to note down all that? Feels like work! And for the battle system: do I have to raise shields (press S) everytime a missile approaches me? Or are they active all the time? Same question with J (the jammer) - do those systems function passively? If yes, why are there buttons to adress them during the fight?

Sebatianos 23-08-2005 04:09 PM

You should raise your shields and turn on the jammer before entering a fight (otherwise turn them off - it's easier to scan for stuff without them). Once they are turned on they stay on until you shut them down.

For the races and so forth - I'm afraid you would have to write it all down, if you want to know all of it.

For the hailing - it's not that hard. You select hail a ship/station (or somebody hails you).

Guest 23-08-2005 06:18 PM

Hmm, how do I turn shields and jammer on if not in a battle? Do I turn them on under Engineering -> Status -> Shields (f.e.) + Execute?! And if so - how do I turn them off? Switching to Standard?!

Or do you mean raise shields right after choosing Combat? If so are they switched of after disengaging?

And my question was: how do I answer an incomming hail? Imagine being hailed in a standard orbit above an inhabited planet with 4 ships around?

Geordy 23-08-2005 06:20 PM

Sorry, last post by me.

Sebatianos 23-08-2005 06:51 PM

No - under engineering you can change the devices you use (you can install more powerful shields, better jamming devices and so on).
Everything is done in the sub-menues. So if in combat sub-menu and select attack - you 'll have the option to turn on/off shields, jammers...
If you have no-one to attack that can't work.

To answer the hails:
Just remember the ship that hailer you - and hail it back.

To switch between ships (while attacking, scaning or hailing) use ...next target.

And feel free to ask anything - if it's not clear. That's why we are here for - technical support, hints, clues, help...

Ok, nothing easier than that. If they would tell me, who hailed me. :D

Sebatianos 23-08-2005 07:41 PM

It's usually the first ship that you can hail - if not then it will say so. But they usually just hail you to trade or give you gifts - there's rarely something importaint that you shouldn't miss out on.

Khono 27-08-2005 05:12 AM

:-D I got the idea of getting the newest dosbox just before I logged into the forums here LOL. Thanks a lot guys for all your help, I really appreciate it. This game is so much better with sound. XD

Guest118 04-09-2005 05:22 PM

I'm running this game on an old 386DX/40 (with 32 mb ram) and I still don't have enough EMS for sound?!? Anywyas,

OK im pretty far along in the game and i've killed many a korok ship. I have a LOT of planetary stuff (alloy document, nuclear engine, warp engine, all the old phelonese stuff) but I need the random generator to give to the EX-3. I can't get it off Er'iick because he wont trade it to me, despite me having a good deal of stuff to actually trade. Most people tell me "you dont have anythihng to trade" so what the hell? I had to GIVE er'iick lots of stuff just so he could trade with me, and then he wont trade away the things I need.

Also, what am I supposed to do with M'uret? I found her and she gave me 100 scrolls. WTF am I supposed to do with them!

Sebatianos 04-09-2005 05:39 PM

Not everything you get is useful!
Also remember this - if they tell you you have nothing to trade - that means they won't trade with you (may be because they have nothing to trade).
I remember the first time I finished the game - I was so frustrated at this point, that I started randomly flying around and came to a place in space with a strange Korok ship - it was MR1's ship and I destroyed him. End of story (I never found out about the Less Ten though...).
There are multiple endings, but the game get harder and harder by the end, so you wouldn't simple repeat - the attack, trade, find out stuff, go on errands and attack some more - routine.

Good luck!

Sebatianos 14-09-2005 06:24 PM

Sorry for the double post.

Well - after so many years I've decided to replay the game and look for the other solution!!!
I finished it - and was quite dissapointed!!! :not_ok:

After a lot of bother I disabled the gate at the LOSTEN world - and was extremely dissapointed! All I that I could do afterwards was to send a Arch-Bot down and collect the Fail Safe device. This device destroyed the MCR and the game was over without reveiling any more story or anything... It was even the same ending as if I'd destroy the MCR with the missles - which isn't all that hard and I've done years ago, when I first played the game...

Anyway - I'll add a hint file to the EXTRAS - so if you wanna find out how to do it - you'll be able to download them!

The Cabbage 24-09-2005 07:41 AM

Yeah, it really sucks about the ending thing. I was very disappointed too. But hey, it's the story you uncover on the way there that makes it worthwhile.

Hint with the Bellicosians: you can gain their respect by acquiring the Spikes of the Last One. I believe M'uret has it. It'll allow you a chance to chat with at least some of them without them blasting at you (most notably their leader - forgot his name/title). Don't think you can really get much out of it, except maybe some info on their backstory, but there's always the possibility that there's more you can do with them.

Ave 11-04-2006 12:26 AM

What I don't understand is that the box tells of being able to talk to "over 11 races." However, here is what I have seen for the races (numbered for emphasis):

1. Arden
2. Musin
3. Chanticleer
4. Ursur
5. Pahrump
6. Phelonese
7. Korok
8. Bellicosian
9. Altec Hocker
10. Shaasa
11. Kenelm

Is there one more race, or something, like the Losten? I find it rather dificult to believe that "over 11" means exactly 11.

However, I would like to know some of the backstory on the game, though that would have to be obtained from the developers in some way. For instance, why is Earth the only planet in the Sol system that one can visit? I would like to visit some of the other planets for resources and the like, but they were left out of the game. Also, what is the story behind the OESI? If the governments of Earth have banded together for this service, then how far into the future does this game really take place? I know the log says 4161 or something, but the technologies from Earth seem quite modern for such a futuristic timeframe. Finally, what are this game's exact ties to Disney? After all, the ship is the same design as that hanging in the Space Mountain ride--and the log even says "Space Mountain Log." Was this a game based off the ride, or were the designers sneaky little devils that did not care about copyright?

By the way, EX-4 is the Korok that needs the Re-Random Generator (fixed by Bob-clo-cli-mar).

They should make an updated version of Nomad with better graphics and able to play more easily on modern computers. Possibly there could be a sort of Nomad 2: Return of the Losten, or something, or at least a game that reveals a threat from outside the Milky Way.

Sebatianos 11-04-2006 07:51 AM

From the impresion I got, this should have been an excelent game, but they cut it down.

You get many hints that there's much more to the game than there actually is. I guess it's because they had to throw some things out (unfortunately). I fully agree, it would be a time for a remake, where you'd get much more options. Back then I gguess the game would simply be too big.
I also get the feeling the game was after all maded for the younger population. Maybe that's why they simplifyed it. It's all a real shame though. That's why I was disapointed when I finally solved all there was to the MCR (I was really hoping for an option of being able to contact the Losten and get a chip to reprogram it - instead there was just a detonator causing MCR to self destruct).

Jason1701 12-04-2006 09:35 AM

Ya I agree they should do a remake too bad that any current game developers wouldn’t be interested  Anyways I remember playing this game on my friends computer cause we didn’t have one at the time and I loved it I remembered the game for years but I never remembered the name of it then I ran into it here I think the closest game I have seen to NOMAD was Freelancer that Microsoft put out a few years back

Charley W 01-05-2006 10:47 PM

This was one of the first games I ever bought. About 11 years ago, Portland had the worst snowstorm in 30 years and we were snowbound for a week or so. We got by largely by playing this game (and a couple of others). It's great to find it again and replay. Thanks for resurrecting this old favorite for a new generation! I had the sound problem also and your step-by-step proceedure was a big help.

Some bits and pieces to help:
The missions on the Com-net seem to be the same no matter which planet you go to and in the same order until you accomplish them. In other words, when you complete mission # 7, it disappears and #8 moves up the que. As I remember (I lost my notes years ago), some events are time-dependant; when you access them the clock starts and they will disappear eventually.

The different races have different viewpoints and different information. But with few exceptions, I've found that virtually all members of a particular race have the SAME information! This discovery has been quite useful, I get most of my basic information from the Planetary Representative and can save time talking the ships. There ARE exceptions, though. People that you HAVE to talk to individually include:
Musin- Bob-clo-cli-mar, Eld-clo, No-clo
Arden- Brin O-Keef
Pahrump- Er-iik
Phelonese- M-ret
(the Altec Hockers and the Korok are special cases)

Try to talk to the Korok orbiting Earth. It seems to have some more detailed background info than ones we found other places (nothing uniquely vital that I know of), and is easier to talk to. This may just be a factor of the first Korok you communicate with, though. You usually seem to be able to ask them 3 or 4 things before they go hostile on you. Jammers help on this, but I haven't figured by how much yet.

You start with an inventory of
5 chocolate bars,
1 car keys,
1 company badge,
1 company watch
1 $20 bill
and The Secrets Of The Galaxy.
None of these items except TSOTG seem to have any special use except for trade and they seem to have various values. If you get destroyed and select the Repair at Earth option, you lose EVERYTHING in your inventory except TSOTG and 10 chocolate. You can do nothing with TSOTG until you meet Bob-clo-cli-mar.

The version at TheUnderdogs has a couple of saved games already on it. This is a big help, since they are further along and have some stuff which you can run through and test without risk in your own game!!!

It would be really helpful if someone could post what the differences are to get to the different endings and just how many there are (I've heard of at least 3). Also, earlier there was mention of a .txt file, but I can't find it. It would save me a lot of wrist strain if I had access to all of the conversations and could just copy them into Notepad! And, please, if anyone has a copy of the manual that they can scan and put up, it would be greatly appriciated!!!! Cabbage, is your info up yet?

Again, thanks a lot!

Does anyone remember how to get the stealth shield? I know that you have to get a series of facts and then I think walks-home-world gives you the shield if you tell him the one fact. I know one of the facts you need comes from an altec hocker as well. I wish I could remember the series of events. If anyone can fill in any of the blanks, that would be great.

I think you ask (any) Altec Hocker about location->Losten;

Eitherway, you somehow get the fact:
"The gateway that guards losten has kept the korok from destroying that world. Their weaponry and intellect cannot solve its riddle"

I gave this fact to Altec Hocker 2 at Griss, and it replies with the new fact to do with the mcr/wr6000 that you have to give ("Give fact that...") to Walks-Home-World who is the planet representative at the Ursor planet Bluelakeshorz.

Try running 'mem' or 'memmaker' or maybe 'memmkr' I don't remember the exact command, but whatever it was allowed me to change the memory allocation between EMS and XMS. Different programs liked different kinds of memory. If those don't help, try this site: http://www.computerhope.com/msdos.htm#02

I'd use my mom's old comp if it didn't irritate me all to hell. I can't handle the 5 minute reboots. Also, if you're running it from windows, try running it from dos (saves memory).

Hope this's still of use.

Disable the unneeded drivers or use LH to load them into higher areas of RAM.

Guest 18-08-2006 11:00 AM

I still play the game I love it all the different species like the musin and the Ursor, and those musin are so funny LOL, at the end you have to fly through a tunnel of circles while you being attacked, you need a very good repair tool (Jiff'ntheboxbotbooster or something like that) and Velo, deathstrike or quiridus missiles

wingbarrett 28-09-2006 03:59 AM

hey i wanted to know if there was anyway i could find out specs for the items and stuff in the game or a description of them.

colinb 18-10-2006 12:01 PM

Here's a zip file containing nicely formatted screenshots of most of the items in the game:

http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/28235/nomad.zip.html

If you use a hex editor to look in the INVENT.DAT file that comes with the game, it seems to contain embedded files 'inv0001.stp' through 'inv0254.stp'. I'm not familiar with any STP file format, so it's likely a proprietary format created by the game developer.

The package of screen shots linked to above contains 235 items, so I suppose it's possible that there are up to 19 more that I haven't discovered. Most of the really weird ones (Ancient Rocketskate, Brass Glass) were brought up from previously-inhabited worlds by Arch-Bots.

Could you re-upload your screenshots? They seem to have expired

HackerJoe 26-11-2006 03:01 PM

Also I have heard that the UK intro is a lot different to the US Intro.
You should be able to see your ship stranding at Space Station Hawking in the UK version. Does anyone have info (or files) on that?

Thanks for the upload though

just line up the crosshairs and fire when they go orangey triangley! also make sure you're trying to shoot the bad guy ;)
yeah the combat seems rather 'hands off' there are games with much better combat in space.. but in terms of scanning and navigating and trading its seems a lot of fun.. like you would imagine a real spaceship to be. a real spaceship would just have a computer do all the combat, so i guess they stopped short of that at least ;)
[/b]
well, this isn't a simulation, you know ^_^ , the combat is simple, but easy. I, I mean, just think of spacecraft. you need two things. first, to win in space, you need skill, "Wing commander" is perfect example. second, you need good ship and weapons, "Wing commander" and "Project nomad" is perfect examples. while (at least i think so) "starwars x-wing collectors addition" need skill, "Project nomad" need weapons, and "Wing commander"- both (if you don't know how to fight, you never stand a chance against jhaltky (or how they're called :whistling: ...), but, if you don't have good weapons, how do you expect to destroy kilrathi battle cruiser?).

They wanted to blitz the market with a large number of titles in one year. Part of an effort to gain name recognition, where releasing one or two titles per quarter wouldn't have done as much. And that makes a kind of sense, except that those titles have to be really, really good, as well. They weren't polished enough, just as you point out.

Their PR unfortunately was also poor. I remember that department being annoying and unresponsive to requests for review product, even though at the time I was an editor for one of the US game magazines. They wanted a guarantee of a positive review--if you can believe that.

Well, actually, today I *could* believe it, since I know such shoddy practices go on. But back then? No way. We point blank refused.

I haven't played this game but I just read the description and these comments and I have to wonder..
How close is this to Space Rangers 2 (a 2005 game from Russia with low system req)? SR2 has 2d space with top-down view but otherwise the similarities are striking. Half a dozen races to pick from, "open-ended" universe to haul stuff, run missions and quests, probe uninhabited planets for stuff and of course, the main goal of eliminating an invading mechanical race with superior firepower that has several "leaders" which can be neutralized in multiple ways, not just by blowing them to bits.

Not so similar I'd say. You can only play one race here - human, but you meet other races (their number is limited though - if I remember correctly there are some 15 races maximum). The number of planets is also limited (and you neededn't travel to all of them). The number of missions is also limited. Once you get close to the end there is only one standing mission left - to keep destroying enemy ships, but the game can end if you take out the enemy master computer - you can deactivate it or destroy its ship.

But then again, there are several games where you need to travel, trade, collect and destroy things in order to progress (and quite a large number of them is set in space).

You can just play the game for yourself and see how much it is (or is not) like SR2 (which I haven't played, so it's not so easy to compare).

Hello Folks, Since I have been playing this game pretty much since it first came out (yes I still have an original copy in the box-disks & manual) I would like to contribute some missing info.
For instance no-one from what I can see mentions the Proto-Uni Translator for communicating with the Shaasa. I will attach a doc with useful info and continue to watch the postings.

HackerJoe 20-01-2008 02:16 AM

Awesome...
I'll have a look at it, when I'm playing again...

WilliamC23 25-01-2008 01:44 AM

I heard that the British version was vastly different, at least intro-wise. does anyone have the British version?

HackerJoe 04-03-2008 10:08 PM

Guess what I found

HI,

I just recently dug around in an old disk pile and FOUND:

a Razor1911 scene release of NOMAD, called "Space Mountain v0.97.01" (taken from the main EXE)

It appears to be a beta of NOMAD and it comes on 7 720K disks.

It definately has another Intro and references the Disney Ride of the same name (you start out in Disneyland, yes!).

Also the "Space Station Hawking" business is revealed in text form.

So, where should I upload my 7 Disks to make it available to abandonia users?

BlueGhostSpyder 08-03-2008 03:22 PM

New old version

I hope someone that can tell you where to upload those 7 disks responds soon. I would really like to get hold of the version you have. Thank you for your effort in finding it.

HackerJoe 09-03-2008 07:30 PM

I have uploaded the whole thing to mediafire.

rename the .BIN file to RAR and extract with password "nomad"

www.mediafire.com/?upuxmmzmoxx

Appears that the game is not as stable in this version but it sure is interesting to look at :)

Cheers

Sebatianos 11-03-2008 04:46 PM

OK, testing this version now. If it works (at least to a reasonable point of stability) it will be added as an extra file (so you can download this game as an extra). Thank you!

The Cabbage 10-06-2008 08:01 AM

Sweet! Thanks for the text file and the alternative version, guys. I shall explore them when I get the chance. :D

Elurindel 27-05-2009 11:47 PM

Is there anybody who can help me? I have three pieces of the code, I have the Ancient Alloy Tablet, Ancient Document, Stealth Shield, the Fact of Paramis, and the only piece I need now is that belonging to WR-6000/EX-2. Problem is, he won't talk to me for long enough for me to give him the override code Paramis!
I've tried getting Eld-Clo to talk to me about the Stealth Shield, but he really doesn't seem very inclined to talk about it.
I tried unlocking Losten's gateway by guessing the last portion of the code, (got it right, too!) and the Arch-bot I sent down came back with the wrong damn item!
Can somebody help please?

golan 26-01-2010 05:57 PM

Did anyone found a way to get the Shaasa translator device?

golan 07-02-2010 12:54 PM

Elurindel, IIRC you get the Stealth Shield once you get the final promotion from the Alliance.

Anyhow, did anyone actually find the Shaasa translator decive (IIRC it was called the Proto-Uni Translator)?

Proto Uni-translator images:

(Very big high def image links, so only broadband users will really be able to view 'em - if anyone still uses a modem say so and I'll resize them.)

Visit the two following links in your browser to view the images.

And the second image is after showing the shaasa the device (which you have to do each time to use it - they speak in broken english, but english nonetheless.)

..... and a zillion other freeware dos screengrabbers .......

SGP 23-07-2010 12:29 PM

I knew some were available, yes. It was more a matter of getting the file from the drive, despite there also being ways of doing that easily also.

I was just working with what I had at the time. Though I should've resized them, perhaps.

I'll install one for the future in case I have the need to post other screen shots here, so that everyone is happy.

The Fifth Horseman 23-07-2010 01:14 PM

I recommend using Screen Thief for that. :)

guest 06-03-2012 08:02 AM

There are a few questions I have about this game.

First,I can only take two hits and my ship blows up. Why are my shields so weak.

Second, after delivering the medicine there are no other missions available on com-net that do not involve combat. Did I miss something? Or is combat necessary to get more missons?

Thanks
