I'm not sure if this topic has been covered before, but I've been a watcher of the forums for a while, especially since I use this site as a resource so much... and it seems to be very multicultural :) I almost wish I wasn't stuck in boring old Canada, as I can only speak the one language... always wished I could speak even, like, French.

Koen 04-01-2005 10:26 PM

I remember such a topic
http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index...opic=2065&st=0

But I'll say it again.

I'm from Holland!

Yes, Omuletzu. Many US (and Canadian) towns are named after European cities.

In fact, there used to be a town called Berlin here in Ontario. It changed it's name in World War II to Kitchener.

They wanted to name it after the seat of learning of Athens, Greece because we have a University that was built here around the same time as the city.

Winnipeg happens to be the crime capital of Canada. You wouldn't think that, as there are much bigger towns that you would expect to be more dangerous.

Some other people from the United States that posted here immediately write "but I'm not fond of the US", like it's some trendy new thing to say, or that people from outside the country just HAVE to know whether or not one is a Bush supporter.

Regurgitation of the blatantly obvious (i.e. "Bush Is A %$#@!"), or even the blatantly ignorant (i.e. "This country sucks.") is no more a sign of intellegence or unique thought than any of the comments that Bush supporters repeat. If all you're doing is repeating what everyone has said for a long time, just how deep are your thoughts on the matter?

Anyway...I'm just as much against our current (and past) policies as anyone, but there's no need to feel ashamed about living in the United States. If anything, be proud that you're one of the people in this country who shows some signs of intelligent thought.

And Mike scores a basket, for the win...

I completely agree. As a Canadian, I have no problem with the nation itself. Sure, I think it's administration right now leaves a lot to be desired, but you'll never catch me burning American flags or laughing at any US tourists because they're from the US.

I know that may seem a suprise since every Canadian is supposed to be resentful of America, but that's how it is.

well some have a nasty accent and they call that ABN.

Oh well. I live in the north somewhere ;)

Reup 07-02-2005 07:39 AM

This is quite a bit :ot: but lately the Dutch and Belgian television have a tendency to subtitle Dutch in ... well Dutch. So if a show from the Netherlands (in Dutch that is) is on a Belgian channel it's being subtitled and when a Belgian show is on in The Netherlands, it's subtitled as well! Apart from a bit of accent, the words are almost all the same ...

That's like subtitling Monty Python in the USA!? :wall: (But maybe this does happen? Does anyone know?).
