Review and Download (if available) |
ahh i remember this , thanks ;)
mmm on the main menu screenshot(first one) it says shareware version :eeeeeh:
Are you sure, Omuletzu?
IN its time it probably was shareware ;)
Its the full version, no worries ;)
I'm getting a message that the game cannot be played because I'm missing FILE_ID.DIZ. I'm trying to run this in DOSBox. I haven't had this problem with any of the other games from this site. What's going on?
Fixed, sorry about it
The copy I reviewed was shareware, or else I'd have included screenshots from other missions with other airplanes.
No problem, thanks for the fix.
Aw nuts. I downloaded the new version, the old problem is gone, but now I can't seem to get XMS memory in DOXBox without Zone66 complaining about an XMS driver running. Any ideas?
Nevermind, I'm an idiot. Read the whole review just for the hell of it, turns out I needed to disable EMS and XMS emulation.

I can't seem to get any audio output out of this title. I'm not sure what else to try other than messing with the DOS audio options (I have D-fend running on top of DOSbox)
On lvl 2 (the snow one) it seems to be bugged and I cant finish the level because a structure wont destroy.
Goes like this: I carpet bomb the living daylights out of an area, and there's STILL a white dot on my map, not matter how much i bomb it, it wont go away. Any ideas?? |
Please reply, this problem is really bugging me
yeah im having the same problem says error in the back dos window everytime a bomb hits it too
Hey, man, I'm in the same boat. That stupid white dot is screwing up my whole story line. Is this a game glitch, cause there is no structure in that area? Someone really needs to fix this thing. :Titan:
I can't seem to get past the second campaign mission - there's a main target in the southwest corner of the ice plains mission that i've bombed the hell out of, but the game doesn't want to admit that I've carpet bombed the effing place (and as such, I can't get the rest of the story which I want to read so very dearly). Anyone else having this problem?
:help:
Help's here! Yeah, i had that problem too... i even downloaded it from another site, and i had the same problem... SOLUTION: I'ts hard to describe, so go to GameFAQ's and search for Zone 66. There will be a FAQ containing the solution. A tip: Backup your game before doing so! :Brain: |
...you guys could thank, you know... :tomato:
That's humans for you.
7 posts, SEVEN, begging for help on the exact same problem, when the answer was on gamefaqs all along. It boggles th mind.
OMG, I love this game. And everywhere I looked only shareware, THanks Abandonia. My questino is NO ONE is buying the games so why do the firms dont distribute them ?
They are always hoping to get a few bucks out of selling them. Even though releasing them as freeware (or giving some game mags a permission to put them on cover CD's) would give them a lot of free publicity.
i have dosbox 0.63 and i set my xms and ems memory to false but im still getting the xms problem?
[dos] # xms -- Enable XMS support. # ems -- Enable EMS support. xms=false ems=false |
Get version 0.65, it's the latest one.
I know i tried that already. same thing happens
"this program cannot be run with an xms driver" I think ill have to try a boot disk cause that worked when i played a while back |
I get an error message that it cannot run with XMS driver. I downloaded the current version on this website. Can anybody help? Thansk
How does the story end? I only played the shareware levels...
Play the game and find out yourself. ^_^
IIRC there was an updated version of the game which was less picky on the memory managers you had running. I remember running Z66 with XMS memory just fine....
Hey, this is a fun game! I had the demo a few years back and always considered buying the full version. Mmm, thanks!
Thanks!
I think I got this with teh gravis ultrasound card, and the menu music was really really good. but, any way to get it to sound better in dosbox? |
You can increase the sampling rates set in DOSBox.conf (to 44100 rather than 22050 - altough the quality gain won't be large) and change the soundcard emulation to Sound Blaster Pro 2. Remember to modify the game's config appropriately as well.

:link: I've done a little research based on my own experiences with this game. I do believe Epic MegaGames and Renaissance drew inspiration from the anime/manga series "Area 88" when they created it.
To me this is evident both in the similarities of its name ("Zone" is a synonym for "Area", and 66 and 88 are both multiples of 11), and the artistic design of its main character (the eyes do appear to be slightly manga-esque. From the little I've seen of the character's hair, it could be blond, like that of Area 88 protagonist Shin Kazama; the hairstyle is even similar). If any of you have seen Area 88, please tell me if you agree. This introductory post brought to you by: :blastola: Eep! *runs from a :lynch:* |
Personally the first time I read about Area 88 was in this article http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-...how/2011-11-06, so not that long ago. :p I would say it's fairly possible, since the OVA which was released in 1985-86 in Japan was published in the USA in 1992. That's one year before the release of the game. The manga itself was published some years before that.
Considering the theme, the title and the anime-ish cutscenes it's 99% inspired by the manga/OVA. There's also an official game based on the franchise. It's called UN Squadron in the West. :) |
