Metal Gear Solid [SOLD]

Yeah, so I was browsing around my computer looking at old games, and lo' and behold, I discovered the PC version of the Playstation game Metal Gear Solid. This is kind of one of the first Splinter Cell type games, in that you are a covert ops kind of guy sneaking around. I remember it being extremely intense (tapping on walls to distract guards, hugging walls, when playing PS, actually having to plug my controller into slot 2 in order to beat the Psycho Mantis dude, etc.) and I thought it would be a really cool addition to this website. Zipped, it is about 100 megs, and I do believe it is on the underdogs site here: http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?gameid=5057 Any other toughts or oppinions on this game?

WildZeppelin 10-01-2005 12:21 AM

never played it all the way through, but I do remember loving the opening music on the demo. Did you catch the girl working out in the cell if you left and returned a few times?

DeathDude 10-01-2005 02:25 AM

It was a cool game when it came out. I still remember how long some of the cinematics in the game were, especially the one when you first see Physco Mantis come out and do his thing with the dude in the cell. Plus the voices were really well done especially Snake's, great game overall.

WildZeppelin 10-01-2005 02:37 AM

LOL, yeah, especially considering the ones on nes were my last reference to this game. Big improvement.

"Uh-oh, the truck have started to move."

goblins 10-01-2005 05:17 AM

so can it be put on abandonia or not on abandonia ? is it still sold - perhaps if it is the demo can be put up *that would be acceptible* i think

mikebarry 10-01-2005 06:35 AM

I don't think that the Admin's want any Shareware or Demo's on the site.
Otherwise all of the great (Apogee, iD, etc.) shareware would be great! Among others...
Maybe i'll turn my stale old website into a storehouse for Shareware.
But that's another story.

ReamusLQ 10-01-2005 06:36 AM

I'm not suggesting putting a demo on the site though, I'm suggesting the full version...HOTU has it to download, so is it not abandonware? Are they not a respectable abandonware site?

edlglide 10-01-2005 07:21 AM

Metal Gear Solid was a really fun game.........and yeah, it's sort of like Splinter Cell in gameplay, but Metal Gear Solid is far more cinematic and interesting to me. In fact I'm playing Metal Gear Solid 3 for PS2 as I type this.

goblins 10-01-2005 07:24 AM

Im playing counter strke at present (which i paid a cheap price for on ebay) and its a bit like MGS a very good game - the graphics and online gaming make it a decent title to fiddle with

ReamusLQ 10-01-2005 07:33 AM

So...is this a yay or nay for the site?

goblins 10-01-2005 07:41 AM

a yay or a nay might take a few days that said MGS is a good game and if it can be added that would be a good move

wormpaul 10-01-2005 03:29 PM

This version of MGS doesnt work that well on my PC>..

But maybe we can search for a better one :ok:

Scarface 10-01-2005 06:02 PM

I got the PC version and it's much better than the one for PS. There are 2 CDs and you can play the VR missions (It was sold as another game for PS). Also you can get a first person view.

wormpaul 10-01-2005 06:04 PM

Indeed....

I played MGS 2 on PS2 with a friend of mine...and there did the FP worked really good...

Only you couldnt walk when looking in FP...really strange

I think the FP is just to get an accurate shot :sniper:

Kon-Tiki 10-01-2005 07:03 PM

Never could get the game actually started on my comp. Thrice downloaded it from HOTU, but it always asked for the cd.

Shavo 23-02-2005 05:10 AM

I did find it after some time googling, and it works just fine, but the cut scenes are short, or just aren't there. It wasn't on the "definitely not abandoned" list, so would it be ok? or is the file too big? the file I downloaded was about 102 megs and it took about 2-3 hours on my cable modem. So, can it be done?

Omuletzu 23-02-2005 06:49 AM

Looks good, is abandoned.Looks like a worthy addition to the site.So.... how about making a review + screens for it ;)

Mentor 23-02-2005 06:54 AM

Sorry to burst your bubble, but both Konami and Microsoft still support it, so it isn't Abandonware. Underdogs may have gotten special permission to host it, though.

Omuletzu 23-02-2005 06:56 AM

So we should also get one.We managed to snatch one from Sierra, what could be so hard?

that's true, although I think the next biggest mountain to overcome after Sierra would be Lucas Arts :rifle:

Omuletzu 23-02-2005 02:24 PM

yeah or id...

Fawfulhasfury 23-02-2005 03:39 PM

Well, I think Metal Gear Solid would be a fine addition. But I actually remember reading somewhere, that to promote Metal Gear Solid 3, Konami had made Metal Gear Solid free for download on their site or on gamespot or somewhere. No, it wasn't Underdogs. I'm pretty sure Underdogs read this too, and put the game up on its site.

The Levitating Nun 23-02-2005 05:52 PM

If we get hold of Metal Gear Solid can it please not have the voice and music removed from it like the version on Hotu as the voices do make it far better than without them.

BlackMageJawa 23-02-2005 06:48 PM

It'd be a lot bigger with the voices intact, but I agree that they're an integral part of the game.

BTW, I can't find any mention of the the PC version being freeware. Shame, as I'd love to play though MGS in FPS mode. Plus, IIRC, the PC version includes the VR missions, which I can no longer play as the Special Missions disc doesn't work on PAL PS2s. Goddam Sony ****ing everything up :ranting:

Metal Gear Solid is not abandoned.

A) Konami never released it as freeware. I don't know where you heard it, but you (or the place you heard it from) are mistaken.
B) The Playstation version is widely available, giving the PC version (which actually includes new features that the PSX version lacks) could hurt sales.

Plus, even if it was, this site could never put up a game so huge without cutting a bunch of it out.

If you want to play it either get it from HUTU (and do without whatever they had to take out of the game ) or buy it. I've seen the PC version in stores many times (in fact I picked it up myself for about $10 a few months ago). And if you have a PSX or a Game cube...well it's certainly very easy to find on those two systems.

Edit: If there is a smilie in this post, I didn't put it there, and frankly have no idea how to get rid of it (computer illiterate).

Another Edit: I think I figured it out, I tried to type "B)" and for whatever reason, the boards replaced it with that little dude.

Last Edit: Fixed.

BlackMageJawa 23-02-2005 11:33 PM

The smilie appeared because you typed B) , the code for a sunglasses smilie.

If you want to make a post using things like that without having them turned into smilies, uncheck the 'enable emoticons' box by Post Options
