Wow, now this is really a good game. I can remember playing this long ago and having no idea what it was called. An excellent game... I think it was this game that got me interested in rpg's... Thanks Blue Byte! :kosta:
|
First RPG that i have trully finished!!!!And it is still best RPG ever made(for me)!!!
:kosta: :kosta: :kosta: Abandonia is the Greatest:kosta: :kosta: :kosta: |
Oh yeah! The only reason I haven't played this when it was released was because at that time Thalion was bought by Blue Byte, and they didn't deem it rentable to make an Amiga port. :not_ok: This is truly a fantastic game, you will be hard pressed to find a comparable RPG, and sadly they don't make games like this anymore...
Anyway, if you have problems running it, you probably have to mount the CDROM in DosBox. Not sure if Abandonia has the CD version, but the one I have is on CD so it might be the same case here. |
This game is just really great. Excellent visuals..

Well, this is how I got it to work perfectly. (smoothly, with sound, music, everything) First, download the game from this site (duh). Next install VDM Sound. Now, for some people it'll say it cant install launchpad.dll, don't worry about it. You don't flippin' need it. After that's installed, go to the VDM Sound folder (eg. Program Files/VDMsound) and run dosdrv.exe It should say somethoung about a sucessful installation. After that, go into Albion's folder and right-click Albion.bat and select "Run with VDM Sound" and wham-o, you got yourself a smoothly running, sound-filled game. Anywho, thats how ~I~ made it work, and I run Windows 2000 Pro. You may need to go into setup.exe (or is it setup.bat?) and right click that and select "Run with VDM Sound, and select a Roland for music, and Soundblaster for sound, I dunno if you HAVE to do this though, butmost likely. I dont even have a Roland, or Sound Blaster (I have a Mad Dog II) but thats what VDM Sound is configured to run with by default.
Anywho, I may be mistaken as to WHY you have to do one of those above things, but thats exactly what I did (nothing more, nothing less) and it works like a DREAM. Didn't even have to touch it with DOSbox. I COULD get it to work with sound and stuff in DOSBox, but pumped it to 10000 with ctrl-F12. |

Ugh... managed to get the game to work perfectly, but it took a lot of effort to pull off.
Now that I've played it for a while, I think it's safe to form an opinion on this game. Driven by all the positive press you guys gave it, I kept playing Albion, and am now in the 3D Dungeon part of infiltrating the Kenget Kamulos compound. That's precisely where I just finally gave up. Honestly, this is a good game, and I absolutely LOVE the storyline, but as fantastic as the plot is, the actual gameplay is at least equally BAD. In other words, I'd personally have to give this game a 3 just because it's the average of 5 (for the story) and 1 (for the horrible, horrible gameplay). The controls are difficult and far from common sense, and I've actually gotten at least 5 times more game overs from unavoidable traps in the 3D dungeons than from all other sources combined, and when I say "unavoidable", I mean that I either don't see them coming, or they home in on you, or once you've been hit once it's impossible to move out of the way of being hit again, or else the horrible controls insist that there's some completely invisible and, indeed, nonexistant object that's blocking my path unless I move a couple in-game centimeters to the left or right, leaving me directly in the way of an oncoming fireball while I try to figure out just how many centimeters and in which direction I need to move. Hell, just today, in the 3D Kamulos dungeon, the game randomly decided that I'd walked through a solid wall into a heat-seeking fire spell-filled room that can only be opened from the outside, leaving me trapped within, my entire party killed within seconds except for Mellthas, who was wearing that Super-Druid's torque that granted him enough of a bonus to luck that traps had less than 10% or so chance of actually hitting him, allowing me to walk around long enough to verify that yes, it was impossible to open the doors to this room from the inside, and no, I hadn't saved since before I even entered the 3D part of the dungeon. Honestly? I would have absolutely loved this game (as I still do the storyline and the 2D parts of the game) if only they had adopted a more conventional "FPS-style" control setup for the 3D parts of the game, or even far better yet, left the 3D parts out entirely, since, as far as I can tell, game designers hadn't figured out how to do first-person 3D games yet when Albion came out. Although, then again, I'm pretty damn sure Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were both out by 1996, so the mooks at Blue Byte really have no excuse. Don't get me wrong: I love the 2D graphics and the Storyline, and the deep, rich setting of the game is one of the best I've ever seen, better even than a heaping majority of the games I've seen come out of *Squaresoft*! But everything else about the game makes me wish I had a joypad or at least a conventional mouse attached to my laptop so I had something to hurl against the wall... |

Just a few advices: Sira is a BEST magician in the game. Thanks to her spell Frost Storm she can damage and paralyze for two rounds EVERY monster on the battlefield. And when enemy canr attack, many battles will be a little lighter :D She will left your party but you can recuit her again when you return to Maine Melthlas is second best magician, mainly becouse his support spells and demon exodus which can become quite handy when fighting, erm demons. The best weapon is somewhere in 2D part of Kentget Kamulo dungeon(dont remeber exactly where :( ).It has attack of 25 is two-handed and can cast strongest spell in the game... |
Got it!
Right, for those of you who, like me, have been getting the "please insert cd" message over and over and have tried all the solutions offered here so far, I think I have an answer for you. Use Winrar not Winzip to extract the files. Yes, it was that simple for me. When you use winzip, all the files are extracted together in a big bundle, which is why you'll get the message "xxx file already exists, do you wish to replace it?". Winrar will extract the files into their designated subfolders. From there, run setup with VDMsound and set digital to roland and midi to soundblaster. Then run the albion.bat file, using VDMsound again. Problem solved (for me at least) Hope it works for you too |
Ah yes. I do remember this game. Loved from the first time i played it. A shame that it like any other game had to end sooner or later.
|
I first played this game as a cover disc Demo when it was released in 1996 and I loved it. Then a year later I read a review of it online and felt so overhwlemingly nostalgic for that world that I went out and bought it, the only copy in the shop in an old battered box. Did it originally come with a hardcopy manual? mine didn't :( but I loved this game. With the full version I was delighted to see that amazing FMV dream sequence with such dramatic music that leads into Tom waking up onboard the Toronto. I loved everything about it. It was truly an epic journey, that sense you get at points in the story when the start of the game, back on the toronto or on the first continent seems so far away. Indeed sometimes it's easy to forget about the toronto. You spend such a long time training up your character on there moving around in 1st person perspective. It's like a whole other game, literally a world away. It was that sense of nostalgia that led me to go out find it and buy it.
I'm glad to hear it works on XP because I would love to play through it again. I've had the install screen background picture as my desktop wallpaper for years. This is a standard which has never been equalled. The story, the scope, the sounds allow it to rise above even the most well rendered games available today. It truly is a classic. You can't go wrong downloading this one. |
I think a have a solution for you ''insert the CD'' problem.
One of my friends had the same problem, and we tried out something. You have to begin with doing one of these two things: 1. Burn the game data on CD and name it ALBION 2. Create a virtual CD with Name Albion Depending on what you have chosen you have to do the following: Disconnect all CD/DVD drives (even virtual drives, if dont want to use a VDC for playing) from the system, so that there is just one drive with the ALBION CD in it. Now you should run the game without problems. My had the problem that he had the CD (original one) in drive ''D:\'' and the always seem to look for the CD in drive ''E:\''. When he putted the CD in ''E:\'' the game looked for the CD in ''D:\''. Always in the drive without the CD :P Really weird. I hope it will work at your system. |
Hi folks,
I've got the same problems, problems with Dosbox and VDMSound, but finally I solved them. First: I've got Albion 1.38, german with CD. Copying all CD-stuff to harddrive did not work, (my) Albion cannot be tricked that way. My Dosbox solution: Copy Albion-CD to HD (maybe you don't have to, but I did...), and mount this directory. Be sure to mount it as CDRom, not as a normal drive. The Disc label did not matter. Install it and there should be ne problem. But: it's slow, so be sure to have some power in your CPU... My VDMSound solution: I had the game already installed (using dosbox), so do this on your own... Starting it at first resulted in "Insert CD!"-Messages... although the CD was inside... Changing the Setup.Ini did not work, so I left it. What helped me was a tool named SAPUCDEX, which was part of my VDMSound installation... But: first I was trying to include this tool into Autoexec section of the VDM-Launchpad, but Albion produces a XMIDI-Error... so: start cmd.exe, type dosdrv (enter) which loads VDMSound, type sapucdex (enter) which makes your CD-Rom now work correctly, and type main (enter) to start Albion... That's how it worked for me Greetings from Rostock m'n'i |
Hey! I love Albion, here's a walkthrough...
You begin in the Toronto. You pilot a shuttle to the world where the game takes place. Click on items to see what is useful. If the menu includes "Manipulate" there is something there to do or use. But do read a lot of the "Examine" boxes for interesting if not useful descriptions. Check your initial room - there are some items there. After a while you are asked to go to the shuttle. Ignore this until you are ready - there is no disadvantage to delay. The best thing to do first is to talk to everyone you can. You have a friend named Joe Bernard who has his residence in the northeast of the building. Go talk to him. He will give you the code (1042) to enter the service level. This level is in 3D (first person). You will find the entrance in the northeastern most corner of the ship. The only critical item here is a pistol and some ammo for it. OK, now that you there you see a door right in front of you. Walk toward it. You see the message "Floor plate lights up" in the corner. Now the door should open and the road is clear. In the next room there are four floor structures (or should I say pressure plates?) in each corner of the room. Activating them all will open the door. Now you will enter a similar room but this one has no floor structures. It has two switches, one on either side of the door on the walls in the north of the room. Activate both to go ahead. The next room has two doors and two floor structures. You cannot open these doors. But be patient. A robot will arrive shortly that will open the doors for you one by one. When you have entered the third of these rooms, there is a switch in the western corner. Activate it to be able to pass through the door on the east. After a while you will enter a room with a cabinet on the north wall. Remember this, because you will need it later. Push the buttons to open the door and when you get to the door with the keypad enter the same code that Joe gave you. Now search the room (the COM room) carefully. When you find the gun, go back to the service level and deposit it in the cabinet. Now go back to the COM room and leave it. You leave by passing some security guards. Note that they will search you and take the pistol if you have it. Now go back for the gun - leaving the way you entered instead of past the guards (which you cannot do originally because you pass a one way door). Do search every room you can. You will also get to Snoopy's room then, which contains some more ammo. Healing potions are very useful. Lockpicks can open locked chests that do not require special keys - although the documentation does not make this clear you can click on a lock without having a pick and use your unlocking skill. If you get a message like "this lock cannot be picked" forget it! If you get "Tom cannot pick this lock" it often means he can pick it - he just needs to keep trying. There are no locked chests in this area to worry about, however. NARIKIDAANI: Explore the building you start in (called the House of the South Wind Clan). It does not pay to be cheap with your rescuers (the game generally prefers the "good" approach although any loose item can normally be taken with no risk or penalty). There is a mini-dungeon here, but it is recommended not to explore it until you have the next party member. The best thing to do now is to leave the clanhouse and explore. Find the stores and check them out. If you have items to sell this is done by going into the same mode as to buy items but clicking on your inventory - you do NOT use the offer item command in the conversation menu in stores - you use that to give items to NPCs where this ties in with the storyline. The documentation does not mention this! After two game days you automatically are taken to see the local ruler (she is the boss after all) and get a quest and a new party member called Drirr who greatly increases your party strength. You can now more easily do the mini-dungeon either before or after the quest. Before the quest might be better because you can use the ammo that you find there. You will be trapped by a cavein until you find a pickaxe. You will need this object in various dungeons - get used to clicking on walls to see if an object can be used on them when you run out of other things to do or are suspicious. You will probably need to use your pistol - save ammo since there isn't much but don't be too cheap - after a while you will be more powerful and can get by without it. Click on treasure piles to check them out - one of them (and only one, alas) has more ammo. There is also a clock - click on it after you get it to make it permanently visible in the screen - it is very useful. Don't forget to give Drirr something better to wear and fight with whenever you go search for the murderer or when you start to do the mini-dungeon. For example, give him the Iskai armor by stealing it. Stealing goes as follows: walk up to the bar and just before you reach it, click the right mouse button. You should be able to reach much further than you normally can. Keep in mind that this routine may take some time to get used to. And a good sword (are you also looking at the expensive Iskai lance?) is not a bad idea either. If you cannot find the first dungeon, ask the cattle breeder just outside. He will tell you. Check the map carefully or you may miss the dungeon once you are there. Walk onto it to enter. Before entering buy some torches to help you find goodies (the torches are very cheap) and a Music Crystal in the general store to give to an entity you find right near the object you are looking for (an Iskai Dagger). You do not have to give the Music Crystal to the entity. You can also buy it just now and use it on the next island. See below. Keep in mind that exploring this dungeon can be very useful. This dungeon is actually pretty straightforward, so I will only mention a few things. Note that outdoors or in dungeons monster pieces may be left after battle and they are usually sellable. This dungeon has two types of stationary plants that take the evolutionary niche of dungeon traps. Big mouths in the floor can be deadly but will close for a while if given chunks of meat that you get killing Krondirs (the big beasts). In town you may have been offered fruit to feed to the other type of guardian plant but it is cheaper just to turn the lights out - this puts them to sleep. Use Drirr (your local guide) as party leader - he sees better in the dark. Explore the entire dungeon for experience and loot (and fun for some). The entity will then tell you how to increase your attributes after you promised him the music crystal. This is critically important - you REALLY need this boost. But be patient - do it after you finish the quest and get a new member so she can share in the benefit, or wait (a LONG time) until you have all six final party members. You get three attributes up one at a time - to get the third up you need to pickaxe a wall. You have to make a path of light. What you do is walk from one glowing rainbow toadstool shaped like a triangle to another in the room where your footprints glow - this opens a wall. To finish the quest go see Frill, the old Iskai in the council house. He tells you to go see Bradir in the Former Guild in the northwest of town. Bradir will fight you but is not a challenge. After the problem is solved, you may think that it is a pity you could not keep that beautiful little Iskai Dagger. Well, you can. Although the leader took it away, go back to the Former Guild and talk again to Bradir. When you end the conversation, he will give you 100 gold and the dagger. I recommend that you give it to Sira (put it on her tail), because she can do with the extra strength. You can now ship out. DO NOT!!! The trip is one way until late in the game (that is what the stone outdoors that is shaped like an eye is for but it is useless to you now). Don't leave the island until you have the following: 1) Sira is level 12 and has Frost Avalanche (at maximum is best but it is essential to have it). 2) Sira and Rainer's Long Range attacks are at maximum (assuming you prefer them to attack long range. You probably do for Sira as she is better at this then Close Range). 3) Tom and Drirr's Close Range attacks are at maximum (if you prefer them to attack close range. Again, you may want this too as the Close Range weapons are more powerful, and Tom is better at it). 4) Drirr has the Iskai Armor (steal it) and the Iskai Lance (unless you prefer lighter weapons or armor). 5) Sira and Drirr each have the Iskai Metal Helmet. 6) Sira has lots of seeds (200+). (Find them outdoors or buy them in the Mages Guild (southwest)). Note: This is merely a recommendation but the seeds and Frost Avalanche seem all but essential. Kill the enemies and sell their parts, as I said before to get lots of money. Spells do far more damage and the frost spells last much longer after fully learned. GRATOGEL: The first thing to do here when you arrive is to talk to the king of the village. He will tell you he needs an amulet that you need to get for him. Then go to the east until you find the next village, and then north, following the path. That is where you need to be. If you have saved the Music Crystal from Narikidaani, go a little further north and give this to the man guarding the oak tree. He will give you a very good weapon in return. When you have the next party member, a Druid named Mellthas, train the spell named Small Fireball the he has. When it is on full power, go to the pass south of the Druid village (called Vanello). It contains a valuable supply of bandits (but they run out after a while, <sob>) and it leads to a trainer, who only trains Close Range combat and a store. If you want to train the party, except Mellthas, who cannot be trained here, then do so, but this trainer is much more expensive then the Iskai warrior on Narikidaani. Another useful thing is to go to the shop there and to buy the Music Crystal, unless you saved the one from Narikidaani. The Dreamshield is also excellent. It is the only powerful shield that Sira is able to wear, so I suggest you consider buying it. And, of course, have a look for seeds outside. It is advisable not to enter the dungeon without a rope. In the dungeon part of Arjano, you will be stopped by fire. Use a bucket of water to extinguish them. There is also a place where there are nine grey pressure plates close to one another. Walk over the plates so that a + sign appears (you should not walk over all the plates but they can always be reset). Then the passage is clear. In the first party view part of the dungeon right near the start there is a secret button nearby on the right hand side. Push it. Now you can get through the first gate after you get to a switch and use it. After that, in the big room with the three flames, step on all the pressure plates. A door in the southwest will open. On the second level you need to step on a plate that releases moving flames. Step on it three times first to open the way to a button that will open up a passage in the east wall. Then keep on stepping on it until the road is clear. When you come to an area with a pit and two locked doors fall through the pit. There are three gates with Warniaks behind them. Open the gates, kill them and get the treasure. If you pull the lever behind one of the doors, the wall opens up, and you can look in a chest (guarded by a demon - a Fear 1). It contains the key to the doors you could not pass. On the third level, there are more tricky bits. In the large room with the big beasts trapped behind the red, transparent walls, only walk over the green pressure plates, otherwise they escape, and they are no joke. Of course, if you have Frost Avalanche at full power and make sure all party members stand on the last row of the grid and have lots of potions, then they are no big deal. On the next level you will find some force fields. There is one in the east that you will have to walk through. But later on, you will find staffs that will get rid of them. Only use them on the six in a row you meet at the end of the level. Talking about staffs, in the room where you get them if you do not want to fight, go to the exit of the room as quickly as possible and pull the lever again. This will trap the enemies. And in the room with the three levers on the south side, you need to pickaxe some walls. Look carefully, or right-click on the walls. If you fall through the pits a little bit further, do not worry UNLESS you do NOT have a rope. There is some minor treasure down there. MAINI: The first thing to do here is to look for your next party member. You can choose either of two, but the mage (called Khunag) is recommended by most people. It is up to you: somebody good at fighting or a poor fighter with good offensive spells only (no healing spells). The warrior is a woman called Siobhan. But Khunag will help you through parts of the Kenget Kamulos dungeon you need to go to much later. You will find both possibilities in Beloveno, the big city that you start in. Then it is a good idea to explore the countryside, and maybe even talk to the members of each town/ village. When you try to talk to Kontos, the leader of the mountain village Kounos, you will be stopped by a guard called Nodd. However, if you steer the conversation in the right way, you will not have to fight him. But you always can, of course. Then it is wise to explore the dungeon under the house. On the first level you will find a chest with a power amulet in it, but once you have it, it seems like you cannot go on anymore. But you can! There is an illusionary wall close by. If you then get to the point with the three pressure plates in a row in front of three doors, run over the plates as fast as you can, otherwise you will not make it through the doors. On the second level it is imperative that you explore all of it, especially directly south from the exit. You will find something that is needed to complete the game. The game itself takes a long time to complete the plot for this continent and be allowed to move on, but all of us have found out through trial and error that you have to just be patient. You may also buy a map that may help you find a cave entrance but you can find it without the map if you explore. The cave is not absolutely essential but has some nice loot. It is the same one whose other entry is blocked by a door you can't get through except from inside the cave. Every morning between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., there is a trainer in the village at the house of the leader (where the dungeon is). He is the only trainer that is able to teach you critical hit. However, it costs 950 gold per point, so think twice. I found it very useful anyway, especially for Drirr and Tom. Sira already has her 5/5 score, so do not bother to train her. The entry to the cave discussed above is from the plateau lower than the village, and to the east. I strongly recommend that you explore it, because it contains some very nice stuff, including the best sword in the game, although it is cursed. But you have to have a rope, otherwise you will not be able to get out. It is also imperative to talk to lots of people on this continent, repeatedly in some cases, going back as you learn new things. Some examples are: the council members in Beloveno, the barkeeper in the Iskai village in the north of the land, and Kariah, the prostitute with her house on the market square. The barkeeper will give you the second piece of the vital item, after a while. There are also lots of seeds here. Collect and move on. After the problem is solved, you will probably want to go to the Iskai shrine and kill Kontos. He has a few goodies. DJI CANTOS: This mainly goes all by itself. You also get a new party member here, an Enlightened One named Harriet. In the southwest of the building, there is a woman who sells spell scrolls. If you got Khunag, buy all the spells that he does not know, as there is no other way to learn them. There is no hurry to go to the Toronto, despite the fact that Harriet pushes you to do so. The first thing to do here is to look for those Flowers of the Goddess you are told about. Stand on them for about 15 seconds, and the leader of the party will have one of his attributes (which depends on the flower) increased by three points. These flowers are for about 15 uses as far as I know, but save the game before you use them and think which party member needs this little boost the most. You will have to wait for 36+ hours until they can be used again. If you have visited them all (there are eight in total) it is wise to collect the two party members who took a vacation when you left the last continent, as they are very useful. UMAJO KENTA 1: If you have explored this city a bit, you will be told there is a prison north of the city. It is useless as far as I know, but if you are anxious, by all means go. You can free the prisoner, but it has no use that I am aware of. You cannot pick the lock, so you will have to wait until the guard comes (at 11:00 p.m.) to open it for you. You can follow the guard there (a long walk!) or find it on your own. First buy the preservative that keeps you alive in the desert. Get several. You get them from the man in the Equipment Makers Guild. To get to the Toronto, you will have to talk to some of the people in the bar, and in the Miners Guild. Bringing a jewel is recommended. The guide will then show you to a cave entrance. The southern exit from the cave leads right to the Toronto. The other exit is useless. TORONTO 2: Look everywhere for pieces of paper with numbers on them. The code for the door is 1001, in case you could not find the piece of paper with it. Once you are in the 3D part, have Joe wake up the robot so that it is able to open the door for you. In the long corridor, stand as far away from the switch as possible, so that you can just still manipulate it. Then run as fast as you can to the other end, and turn the second one. A little further on, free all the robots as then the doors open quicker. A little further on, make sure that the floor pattern on the west side matches the one on the east side. You should go to the east one first. Then turn all the switches as quick as you can. The next door to open has the code 4312 in case you cannot be bothered to try all the combinations on the pieces of paper, or were not able to find them. UMAJO KENTA 2: Fist thing to do here is to go to the building in the northeast of the city. You are now able to pass as the guards let you through. You are told to look for a man in the cellars under the Equipment Makers Guild. However, you do not have the key and you need a secret password. He told me the first time I went there and had to go back until I had the password. Well, in order not to have to make the trip twice, the best thing to do is to go to the Miner's Guild. Go all the way into the big room. You notice you only have access to one mine shaft. Go in there and stand in the niches so that. |
RUNNING ALBION ON XP *WITHOUT* ANY ADDITIONAL UTILITIES *WITH* SOUND.
Seems to me that a lot of people don't know about Windows XP's NTVDM (NT Virtual Dos Machine - the thing that runs your DOS programs when you start them - a bit like the DosBox, actually) and it's capabilities. One of them is... SoundBlaster emulation! And yes, it's usually "on" by default ;) Anyway, here's short "crash course" for those who wish to run Albion WITH sound, and WITHOUT the hassle of installing additional utilities: 1. Take a look at the file autoexec.nt in the system32 folder under your windows installation directory (usually c:\windows, which makes the full path c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt). There should be a line in it saying something like: SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3 If it's there, the VDM is already emulating SoundBlaster :) If it's not there, you can copy it from here ;) 2. Download Albion and unzip it into some new folder (c:\albion, for example). 3. Run SETUP.EXE from that folder. Choose the option that lets you configure sound hardware. Choose "Sound Blaster 2.0 or compatible" for both music and sound effects. If you worked point 1. right, you should be able to use automatic hardware detection without problems; although of course you can specify the "hardware" parameters manually (just enter them like in "SET BLASTER" line above - A220 means emulated SB's address is 220, I5 - IRQ 5, D1 - DMA 1, P330 - port 330, T3 - means NTVDM emulates SB 2.0 - unfortunately it WILL NOT emulate any other version of SB!) 4. After saving your config and exiting setup, just run ALBION.BAT - and enjoy :) Oh, and a bit of clarification. Even if you ARE running real SB on your machine, DOS programs ARE UNABLE to access it directly from inside NTVDM! (that's the way Windows work nowdays, as opposed to the good ol' days of Win98 ;) ) And, yes, the addresses, ports, DMAs and so on defined in autoexec.nt are PURELY VIRTUAL. That is, they have nothing to do with any actual hardware you might have installed, it's just the way the DOS apps running under NTVDM see the emulated SB. So you might actually end up emulating SB on a real SB ;) Although of course the emulation should work with ANY sound device supported by Windows... Which is the real beauty of it :) |
Albion is a must-have for any RPG fan who can accept hybrid games. I've heard complaints from hard-core RPGers who complain about the game's 'purity' because it's more an adventure game, but it's still a must-have in my book. A definite 5.
BUT. I have a minor problem with it. I own the CD version and I downloaded the one available here (because I had an older version on CD which had some dialogue in German and I speak German about as well as I can read hieroglyphs) and they both have the bug. The game plays fine, the musics work, everything's functional, but when I press 'Quit', the game reboots my system. Each and every time. Is there a way to stop it from doing this? Alt+Tab - Close Program is getting a bit tiresome. Even when I play it on Dosbox or on my oldest computer w/ Norton Commander and no Windows, it still does it. Reboot each and every time. And of course I can't remember that each time I play, so I've lost plenty of unsaved stuff because of the single mistake of shutting down Albion. Is this Blue Byte's way of saying, 'Never stop playing this game' or do all four of my computers have some config error that makes shutting down this game normally impossible? It's not as such a major hassle, just annoying, and if there's a way around it, please share? Ta. |
and i playd this game as demo.... YEARS ago... and now i can get the whole version... i have long felt that i missedd something big in this RPG. =/
|
I wish they would've skipped the 3D part of the game. That has not aged with dignity. The rest of the game looks gorgeous.
|
Still a wonderful game. They don't make storylines like this anymore, and the feeling that everytting just fits together perfectly... Love the game, love the world, one of the greats. :ok:
|
hum well it a great old school rpg with a great combat style another download for me :D
|
I'm a frequent visitor to Abandonia, and found a lot of old games I love.
Back at the time when most of these came out I could not afford a PC, so I was just drooling lookin at screenshots in computer magazines. (I had a C64 and later an A500) Albion is a game I never knew, and I just downloaded it out of curiosity. If I have to use one word to describe it is *awesome*! Excellent RPG/adventure, excellent gameplay, character design and storyline! I gave it a 5 but would give it a 10 too! :ok: Thank you guys for makin old gems like this available! :kosta: UKJ Hungary |
fiuh.. i played this game almost 10 years ago and i lost the cd game... but thanks to the abandonia web... now i will continue this game.. this is a great game... my first rpg game... LOL... but... i want ultima underworld too... where is the sites that provide a free download? |
I can start the game without any problems! Have you tried what that Wudi said:

a wonderfully immersive game. i have finished it three times, once every 3 years :)
i still hear the music playing in the first cave where there's that light you have to first avoid and then walk through to improve one of your attributes permanently. and i'll never forget that passage in the mountains where you got waylaid all the time, which was perfect for farming expensive armor :) w o n d e r f u l! |
Best game I've ever played and I played really lots of RPG games(Baldurs Gate, morrowind, ultima, Fallout and many many more). This have just somethink more..I don't know what is it, you must try it, then you will see. Someone here wrote that fights is not so good, just whole gameplay is not so good but story is sooo good..My request on this post:
After few years I release that it is only story(best atmosphere ever..) what is so good on this game, but when i played that I forgot ate, drank, slept, toilet(:D) etc.(so don't worry about gameplay if you try this game first time, you won'n see any disadvantage, just take 2 week holiday, buy lots of food, drinks, nappy :D and enjoy! )..I can't gave up, it is just so amazing game. I played Albion maybe 4times, even everytime it was same :). Epic, Atmospheric, Emotional I haven't more words in my dictionary :D.. By the way, sorry about my English, but don't worry I improve it fast(i am maybe 10000km from home in Australia for english.. ;) ) |
I played Albion for quite a while and I have to say that I'm
frustrated by Albion. It IS great game no doubt! But I couldn't quite work out to get through some dungeons. I kept trying and trying and finally I ceased playing it. And I'm not easy to give up on games! |
Try this if you have a problem...:

Ooooohhh...Man. This was, and still is, one of my favorite RPGs OF ALL TIME. This game has such an AMAZING story! It is a perfect blend of all the best parts of a Japanese RPG, minus all the crappy bad cliche stories the Japanese games always have, and all the strategic complexities of a good American/European party based RPG. You get a win/win scenario with this game!
Yes, some of the dungeons are confusing, but a good strategy guide will solve that. This game is just so dang COOL! They created an entire WORLD, with all its peoples, even down to the toilets. I feel SO bad that Thelion/Blue Byte died. Nobody ever found their games, and it is such a shame. I'd take one of their games over 50 bland repetitive cliche Japanese RPGs that dump and on the market and sell like crazy every year. Play this game. Live the world. You'll never look at RPGs quite the same again. Trisk -Grey: Are you running it in DosBox? It works fine for me even with VDMSound. Make sure you have all the latest drivers for your graphics card...that might fix the problem. |
so, i'm assuming that because no one has responded to the question about the right hand part of the screen being missing on 17" displays and laptop screens is because there is no solution. BUT if someone does find a solution, please post it for the benefit of others.
Also, some people have commented on the 3D parts being really bad gameplay in comparison to the rest of the game. I think they are kinda cool and much more challenging. In 3rd person dungeons, its fairly easy to navigate and so the maze part of the dungeon is really not that difficult. However, at least for me, the 3D dungeon is more realistic in that i get turned around and confused and lost. if it weren't for the map, id be hopelessly lost forever... in the stupid cellar at the hunter clan building. However, i have not gotten very far in the game yet, so my opinion may change. |
This seems like a great game, but I have run into a problem and have been unable to continue enjoying it.
SPOILER WARNING! (Only slightly...) The problem occurs in the Iksai village whenever I get the third party member. After Akiir's murder, I am joined by Drirr to investigate the murder. We go talk to Frill to gain some information. Every time after the conversation with Frill is over, I am unable to move the party. Normally, the mouse icon is an arrow which changes direction based on which direction the party will walk if you click there. After the conversation, it is just a normal looking mouse cursor, a slender diagonal arrow, rather than the fat move arrow. It is an in-game cursor, since it is a lower resolution bluish cursor instead of a white cursor with a black border. For some reason, the game just doesn't seem to give me back control of the party. Does anyone else have this problem or does anyone have any ideas what could be the cause? I am using VDM Sound v2.01 to run the game in Windows XP Pro. System Specs: Athlon 2200+ 1024 MB DDR RAM Soyo KT300 Lite Motherboard Nvidia Ti 4600 Video Card 80 & 120 GB Hard Drives |
I had the same problem (in dosbox) simply reloaded a game from 5 minutes back and the problem was gone, try doing something different, like having another leader
Max |
Oddly enough, that worked?!
Thanks Max! :D I just happened to have one save that was about five minutes back... hehe. :ok: Now I can continue this great game! :Brain: You rule! :kosta: |
im sorry but can someone post the list of key/controls? i cant open chest/doors or grab items... pls help!
|
You can do everything by mouse. For special action rightclick on the object you want to handle. Mh-kay?
|
I've had the issue where, after the festival and assassination, when Driir joins the party, you go to speak to frill and the game crashes. I tried many things, dosbox, non-dosbox, lowmem version, etc. Then I noticed that when this happened, occasionally it would say "empty" in the status line (i think it depended on where the cursor was when it halted), and a little object would fly from the right side of the screen to the left, similar to what happens when someone gives you an object, but near the bottom of the screen. I checked it out again, and it was one of those little blue iskai dagger. I had found one of those recently and put it in my inventory to sell later. When reloaded and ditched the dagger before the meeting, it didn't crash. Don't know if this is unique for me, or if it will help anyone, but thought I'd post it to give anyone else another lead if they are having a similar problem.

Hey everybody, just thought I'd make my first post on this site.
Albion is a great game, one of the first ever comp games I ever played and enjoyed. It is my deffinately my fav and always will be. They just dont make great games like this anymore. I bought a copy of this after playing the demo when it first came out in 1996, after losing the cd I bought another copy in 1997 and then finally in around 2000 I purchased another copy which I have kept. If you haven't played it and you're unsure whether you should a word of advice, stop doig what you're doing and find a copy right now and start playing. I've probably played Albion all the way through about 10 times (roughly once a year). The glitch that was mentioned where the game locks up when you're talking to frill and a dagger flies across the screen is a known glitch and has happened to me at least once on every comp ive played on. It's seemingly a random event, and all i can recomed is that you save before the council meeting. The only problem I have is that there are no english fan sites for albion and wont be a sequel or another game like it. (SPOILER WARNING) <strike>For those of you who are having difficulty with the game there is a bug/easter egg that allows you to get all of the best armor for drirr early in the game. </strike> (CHEAT/SPOILER WARNING) <strike>Hint: It involves running and clicking at the last moment to increase your reach in 2D to grab things over benches. :ok:</strike> |
A very nice game, I still have the manual but I cannot find the CD :wallbash: Well, crap. I remember that some fights were very hard, especially against some sort of demon like creatures.
|
I used to get mum to play the game with me when I was younger since the 3D cave monsters would scare me. They would flash out of nowhere!!
Well, I'm considering on making a website the BlueByte games. That's how much I love Albion :D |
Hi!
I also like this game. I got the CD version from the BestsellerGames magazine. The story, the chars and the world (cultures etc.) totally got me hooked. I don't know how much time I've spent for going through all that "useless" information in the dialogs just for fun. What I also like are the many usefull things you can find, if you don't rush onwards, but search...the pistol is only one example. You really get rewarded for using your brain^^ I also liked the battles, but I think the game lacks in one (and, at least for me, important) point: The character development! I think there are too few skills to develop etc. Reminds me a bit at those Japanese RPGs, when you gain a level the charas' stats raise automatically. Well, at last, one can distribute some points in Albion. Though, I think the rating of 5 is totally justified, because of the things I mentioned before. Anyone who likes RPGs or Adventures should check it out. So, but now to the main cause for my posting, and also for my registration: On Windows 95 and 98 it worked well without problems, but on XP there are some. At first, the game speed was totally slow, but I started the "Albilow.bat" and it got better. The intro-video is still totally slow, but I don't mind that, because it is pretty much senseless and all other videos work. I hope this will help some other people^^ So, the only problems now for me are the midi-sound and some kind of bug. I got the music working now, but sometimes it plays the music fast, sometimes slow...no other parts of the game are affected. When I try VDM-Sound it says "no CD". And the other thing is, sometimes after dialogs or character screens, the Keys don't work till I open such a screen again or save+reload. Mouse controls still work. I'm sorry if this was mentioned before, but I didn't read the last few pages. And is there a way to make screenshots? When I use the good old ALT+PRINT-method, it just doesn't copy anything. I also tried Fraps (simply made no screenshots) and Ifran View (made no screenshots or a huge black picture, depending on settings). Thanks in advance! |
Sorry, I just browsed your text through and it sounds very much like the albion-no-cd-problem that has been solved several times before. Try to search for it.
|
You can take screenshots if you run the game in DosBox.
|
I was one of world buiying albion and i say and reccomend that this is one of the greatests game on world, for me is the best game ever in almost every points.. Thanks Kosta to put game on site!! And thx Albion for producing here.
I want also to say if exists a club a fan or a IRC channel of Albion and Marathon fans... ;) |

I downloaded the game from Abandonia here before the ESA incident. Too bad it is ESA protected now, so there is no chance to add the intro movie. Anyway, so far I experience no problem. I do not encounter the CD problem a lot of people are experiencing. The game runs with either VDMSound or DOSBox. However, in DOSBox, the game is quite slow. Too slow for my taste, honestly. Reducing or Raising the cycles does not seem to affect the performance. In VDMSound, the game plays much faster, but 15% to 20% of the right side of the screen get truncated. I am not too familiar with VDMSound, I do not find an option to set the resolution or to play the game in window mode. Anybody has a suggestion? Otherwise, I have to bear with the slowness of this game in DOSBox. |
their are ways around that like i just got the game today from the underdog
almost all the good games what i cant download here (buy or esa) i get at underdog or abandonier but this place is the best with the quickest downloads ^_^ any tips? |

Don't give up so quick. Albion is one of the best RPGs I've played ever. A friend of mine had given me the CD. I installed and started the game. When I saw the first part in Toronto, I couldn't stand more than 5 minuted and deleted all the game. This whole process repeated 3-4 times. When I saw the high rating on Abandonia, I thought that it should mean something ang decided to give it a try. For a while I only played Albion and completed it. It really is a good game, world, story plot, characters, etc. Even though I played it on pure Dos with the CD, I also had the screen problem. But it doesn't effect the gameplay.
About the Turn Based Combat; some people like RT and some people like TB. Even though RT is ok, I always preferred TB. It's like chess to me. If you can get used to it, you could be addicted to the game. |
It is the slowness of the game on DOSBox that is not bearable. It really kills the game for me. Also I have observed the combat system, and just decided it is not my cup of tea. I mostly prefer real-time system. My exposure to turn-based system is very limited, mostly to those games made with RM2K/RM2K3/RMXP. When I started the game the other day, I was just hoping I would like it, but it just did not interest me. The point that it *looks* like a chess does not help at all, 'cause I don't like chess. Maybe it is related to my childhood experience, you see, my elder brother is a chess maniac and during our childhood days he always forced me to play chess with him whether I liked it or not. As the result, I now hate chess to the death :bleh:

i can not do the trick involveing running and clicking at the last moment to increase your reach in 2D to grab things over benches:(.

Got the CD recently. What fool was I when I deleted this game off my hard drive years ago when I played Albion for the first time? Yes, it was very very foolish...
What a shame that modern games lack of such game world depth and style and this game have everything and much more. Memorable characters, story and very detailed alien world, a perfect blend between fantasy elements and science fiction. It goes serious without adding "dark bloody atmosphere" which is widely used nowadays whenever a game is trying to "look like serious". It's a whole new world to discover. Also unlike modern games Albion makes you patient, makes you to think and finally to read what other characters say, often you are rewarded (you may get some items for free just by asking specific topic the character may like to talk about) for that. This game will remain in my collection forever and have special place in my heart for many reasons. I bet if Albion wasn't a game it would have become one of the best sci-fi books, infact I wish there was one. p.s. I'm so happy that this game doesn't fall down into the kiddish anime, especially with Iskai (cat-like alien race). Now I'm not really against anime, but quite frankly I'm tired of seeing all those cliche sort of "kids save the world" and so on... anyway, that's offtopic so I'm off with it. p.p.s. sorry for my bad english, I just registered to say how I love this game, that's it. |
Treewyrm, your English is better than plenty I've seen on the net. I recall years ago when I saw a boxed copy of Albion at a computer store but didn't have the nerve to ask my parents for it, but I'm glad I have it now.

Many of you have mentioned cheat/trick to reach items in shops which you wouldn't normally be able to take. Well, funny thing that apparently developers knew about it so they have put very funny message when you try to steal sword in the weapons guild shop at the desert city (darn, I can't remember it's name, something-Umajo probably). Just try it and you'll see... I laughed so hard. Marvelous! If anybody wants I can make screenshot and post it here... :-)
|
I've tried getting this game to work over and over with no success, it's a shame because it looks good...i dunno maybe it's something i'm doing on my end.
I set it up as recommemed by one of the early posts on this thread, and it starts up with no problems....i can watch the intro, i have sound, it's a bit slow with a bit of chop in the sound. Once i get past the movie, i get to the scene when the main character(?) talks about having his 'wierd dream again' as soon as i move i get a black screen and it goes back to desktop. Very frustrating... |
I'm using DosBox to play Albion due to the limit of my Windows XP x64 to run 16-bit applications such as Albion via VDMSound. DosBox requires lot more resources and tweaking done before you can try running the game. Another thing I must mention is that I'm using experimental build (daum cafe), avaliable to download from this site. Now you need to do some modifications in DosBox config file:
1. Set CPU type to "dynamic". 2. Set cycles to "auto" or 40000 (value highly depends on your actual CPU, e.g. the better you have the higher value you can set there). I also like a bit blurred graphics to smooth pixels, this can be done by setting output to "opengl" and windowresolution to something like 800x600 or 1024x768. You can play around more with those values, I bet you'll find interesting results but as for me windowed mode with opengl works perfectly. I think that's all. By the way I have original CD so I can't really tell how to run ripped versions without it, here I just simply mount my actual or virtual drive via "mount d e:/ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl" (where e:/ is path to your drive) and that's it! The game runs perfectly, everything is intact, including bugs and crashes this game have (yes, but fortunately they happen rarely, anyway save often). I hope that helps... p.s. My CPU is AMD64 3200+, just saying it so the people would know at which system I play the game. |
I'll give what you said a try, thank you :)
Although i think i may be doomed to never play this...man my luck with games it terrible :hairpull: |
I love this game but there has always been one thing that I haven't been able to figure out:
Does anyone know what the Turquoise Music crystal is for? (the one you get the Kenget Kamulos place) I know the Blue music crystal is to give to Argim (and he teaches you how to get the stat bonus) I know the Red music crystal is given to the guy guarding the Oak tree in Gratogel and he gives you a crystal throwing axe but I just cant find a use for the Turquoise one!!! Can someone help??? Thanks |

Ok, the beginning is just waaay to boring and too long. All I been doing for like an hour it seems is reading. IS the whole game like this? I'd read a book instead. If there is a lot of combat please let me know, I'll force myself through the beginning.

Hey there, just found this site, and I just had to react to this.
Albion has been my favourite game of all time for years, when I found the demo on my brand new (back then) Settlers II CDrom. Couldn't stop playing it, I think I have finished it over 8 times the last couple of years. My first try out of a website those days was dedicated to Albion. Its great to find it here, as it doesnt seem to work on windows XP anymore, but now I might get it to work. It pleases me to see other fans ;) I don't know many who know about this fantastic bluebythe game. Well im off to install it rofl cheers, Nienke/fangirl *grin* |

I used to be so obsessed about this game when I had it. I shifted house, it wasn't packed carefully and the CD broke. God, even to this day, I regret not being able to continue with the game. It's by far the best RPG in my opinion.
:wallbash: Just wish I could play again. |
I truly cannot understand why this games has such a high rating, or why most of the people commenting here seem to love it. The game has some great positives, which I'll get out of the way so I don't have to worry about them while I vent out all the negatives:
-Truly unique and expansive cultures for each of the peoples introduced during the game. -I very much like the idea of magic that gets stronger with use. -Animebona/Animenka story bit was well thought out and quite interesting. -Dungeons were very interactive, puzzles were difficult enough to keep it interesting and now some MAJOR flaws: -Because every monster gives you exp more or less on the same scale, it's easy to become super powerful by just fighting weaklings forever. It also means that characters you never use will be impossible to level up quickly. -Sira has a 'win every battle' spell, frost avalanche. It paralyzes ALL enemies for 3 rounds and makes it impossible to lose any normal battle. -The quests are often ambiguous... I spent much of my game time wandering about the cities trying to figure out who I was supposed to talk to/kill/find/ect. to make the story progress. -Being able to cast healing spells using life points is just wrong. Towards the end of the game, I mowed down a whole army of Service Bots without using one single potion just because I was able to heal to full for free using Melthas' heal spell. and minor complaints: -The music for certain cites, like Umajo, is bad enough to make me turn it off. -Giving weight to the money is more realistic, but it can be irritating. Especially after you get back from the Kenget Kamulo and have many items worth MORE than their weight in gold. I tried selling them only to realize that I had to dump half my money in order to move (of course I reloaded). The addition of some type of bank would ease this problem. -The made a whole bunch of nothing to explore down in the southern desert... it isn't a game stopping flaw, but it does seem quite pointless. Because I was enthralled by the depth given to the different cultures of Albion, I gave the game a 3/5 despite all the severe problems with the game. Without it, it certainly would get a 2 (or 1 if I was in a bad mood). |
|
hi everyone I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had any problems with equipping daggers and stilettos on drirr's and sira's tails. I cannot seem to equip any other light weapon on drirr or sira's tail except for the ones they start of with, even if the resultant weapon is lighter than the original weapon. Has anyone experienced the same problem? Is there a way around this? |

Hi there...
I really loved Albion, when I first played it. Imagine how excited I was when I found abandonia! I d/led the Albion version on the site and managed to run it using DosBOX. Theres only one problem: after the assassination, when Dirr joins the party, the game crashes. Ive tried running it on different computers, some of them old enough to run it without any emulators... everywhere the same problem. Does anyone know how to avoid the crashes? Or maybe there are some savegames from right after the assassination? please? |
My experience is that it runs more stable when you configure it for using it under XP (if you have XP, that is...). There was this manual for doing that somewhere on the forum.... I'm afraid I can't remember its location.

I recently downloaded Albion because I played it when I was about fourteen years old and really enjoyed it, this game is responsible for me being addicted to unconventional RPGs. Anyways...
The installation itself wasn't very hard, all I had to do was unzip it with WinRAR instead of WinZip and run it with VDMSound. You can imagine my delight at seeing the menu screen finally appear. And you can imagine my disappointment when I realized my mouse wasn't working in the least. I consider myself a somewhat experienced gamer, but when it comes to altering aspects of the games actual software, I am completely in the dark. If anyone has any suggestions to fix this problem, please let me know, I'm really anxious to get back into this game and kind of irritated that something of this nature is keeping me from it. |
I can't seem to get this to work. It won't let me configure the sound in the setup file, and it wont work alone OR using VMDS. Any suggestions?
|
Run the setup with VDMSound. Default configuration is Sound Blaster 16, IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220h.
|
Okay, I know this is probably a stupid question, but I seriously can not figure it out. In the very beginning of the game, after Joe gives you the access code, I can't figure out how to input the code into the control panel on the door. I've right-clicked the control pad and clicked "manipulate," and a "Enter access code" window with a little slider bar comes up. How do I input the numbers!? Whenever I click "okay" over the number I wish to input, it just says "Incorrect password." I've tried seemingly everything from clicking on the numbers to using the numbers on my keyboard. I'm obviously doing something wrong here.
|
use the slider to the number you need
|
I know, but how do I input the number. After I've moved the slider to the first number (in this case, 1) and clicked okay, it doesn't input anything. It just cancels and says "Incorrect Password."
|
hey might be a stupid question but how the hell do you recarge the magic items?? its driving me crazy ! thanks alot
|
Please help me :( just after Drirr join me, and I talked with boss of this city, then automatically I started to talk with other NPC. Then when I finished it stuck!!! I cant move, can talk, nothing!! :( Can anyone help me?? :hairpull:

Played the demo a Loooong time ago, and absolutely loved it. Would very mutch like to continue this game, and I get it running and all even without dosbox (in plain windows) but I'm missing like 2 cm or 1 inch on the right side of my screen, if not a bit more. Kinda anoying to be fair as this also means half my inventory etc.
Does anybody know any way of fixing this? |
HELP ME!!
I LOVE THIS GAME, I gotta say. I first found it when I was 6 years old looking for games to play in the CD section of my local library. The case looked cool, so i played it. I didn't understand the story in the least, but I liked it anyway. Then, 10 years later, I found this site. I tried to get albion but it was protected by the ESA (DAMMIT) but now it appears the ban has been lifted and I can actually get the game. Now I got it, downloaded, started playing, and I'm having a great time, but the game keeps quasi-freezing every time i stop talking to Frill for the first time, just after the assassination and your first meeting w/ Drirr. I say "Goodbye" to Frill, and the game stops. I can still move the mouse, but it doesn't do anything if I click. Also, the clock stops on the left side of the screen, and nothing moves. The music still plays, though. any suggestions? I will not rest until I can play this game again. I've been waiting for 10 years. |

can you send a save? i can try going through the chat and send you save back (use free hosting service like www.sendspace.com)

ok i uploaded my save file onto sendspace.com, my email is *REMOVED*
-Sorry. No no email posting. TC. |
sorry, cant figure out how to edit my post:
I'm pretty sure I did that wrong on sendspace.com, i might be missing some final step, just tell me what to do so you can get the file next time you post and I'll be happy to do w/e needs to be done. |
If you register on the forum, you can attach files to your posts (up to 500 KB) without having to use Sendspace/Rapidshare/etc.

yeah, thats also good idea.
btw, if you still wish to do it via sendspace.. http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/3861/howtofn4.jpg -> http://www.sendspace.com/file/0egmv2 |
It isn't letting me attach my save file for albion, and it won't let me post the sendspace file. In fact, i'm not entirely sure this post is going to work, either...
EDIT: http://www.sendspace.com/file/e27u94 That's my save file, if you could go past Frill and save and send back to me that'd be awesome. Thanks in advance. |

Wait for 48 hours. go to the council building, just above the area where you will be when you load. once inside the building, just wait. It will take you to the cinematic that will ultimately end with you talking to Sebaih-Giz Frill. once you say goodbye, just save and post that you're done. Thanks.

hey guys
Got a Problem with albion! After the murder during the concil festival, and after speaking with Frill the game stucks. Can't do anything. Just my mouse is working. It stucks, when I click the "end conversation" button. I' ve saved before this event and tried few times. But every time it get stuck. Can you guys help? |

Run it in DOSBox, with aspect=true set in Dosbox.conf.
|
I played it like that from the beginning to the end. Right side of the screen was always corrupted. I couldn't fix it in anyway. Although annoying it didn't effect the gameplay much.

i would try reinstalling direct x and graphic card drivers if you dont feel like for using dosbox or also: this probably wont work cause refresh rate doesnt affect lcd monitors but maybe your wrong screen offset is somehow connected with specific resolution and default 'refresh rate' so you can give it a shot anyways: click start->run, type in dxdiag and go to 'more help' tab there is 'override value' and try resetting (60 for example) |
hey can you helkp me out the game always exits at the end of the sycadelic intro

I feel a little naughty asking this, but what the **** I'm curious.
In the harbor city there is talk of a brothel called 'The Red Curtain'. Is that a place you can actually -go- in the game, or is it just something that's talked about? (and if so where is it? I might go for the hell of it! 8-] ) |
Hi.
I never played this game before but it looks very cool!! I have a problem. I installed Albion with the auto-run...When Click START a window apears and it says Please Insert the albion CD in your CD-Rom Drive. Thank you for playing Albion... Please someone help me.... Thanks |
best game ever, it has powerful phylosofic value. Compare with another western RPG are all craps. Only workart can influence someones attitudes and wievs to life
|
Hey, guys! I've tried to install the game using DOSBox 0.70, but it doesn't work. I mount the CD-folder in the folder Albion as a cdrom:
mount c d:\games\oldgam~1\albion\cd -t cdrom It mounts the folder as a cd-drive. I open the folder CD inside DOSBox (after it's been mounted as a cd-drive) and choose install. A menu appears on my screen with 2 options: 1.Install Albion 2.Exit the program I choose to install the game and I get an error-message that to install the game I need 3000KB free space and that's rediculous because I have 30GB free space in drive D:, where the game folder is. Could someone explain this stupid situation to me, because I don't get it. Thanks. |
From what I read, it seems you haven't mounted a hard disc drive, but instead tried to use your cd drive folder as your "hdd", and since your cd is a "read only" you won't be able to install the game onto that.
You will, of course, need to mount a hard disc drive to install the game onto. try mount c [whatever path to DOSBox's games folder] mount d [whatever path to your cd drive folder] |
Hey guys. For all of you who experience a freeze after the first conversation with the historian Frill concerning the murder, the same thing happened to me.
The solution: Talk to him about EVERYTHING before you end the conversation. Even about things you've already talked about with the others. Hope it helps. Enjoy the wonderful game. |

Hi!
After playing for a few days (what will continue of course :) ), and reading a few things here, i would like to add some review on the game (at least on what i had seen so far)... First, the technical part. I did not use dosbox as i have only an older PC at my disposal which is fine with DOS. (Feel free to erase this part if you think it inappropriate for copyright reasons... Wish if there was any source from where this great game could be -bought-, but there is not). First i tried the copy here which is a bit ripped, but works without CD. Then as i liked the game from the first glance, i decided to get, and succeed, a full CD edition. But it was "crap", not the game, but the awfully loud noise of the damned CD unit. Using some programming skills, and the two variants of Albion i had then, i discovered that apart from changing an entry in the setup, it is only necessary to modify a single byte in the full CD edition to let it working without CD (from some directory specified in the config. file). So i ended up having a custom made full copy of the game - without the awful noise of the CD unit. Great. The fun can begin :) The story I got a very coarse glance at it from a few words from around the Net looking for the game, but i rather did not read any walktrough through. I want to figure it out on my own. So the story, at least the beginning appears to be very rich, great, but it is definitely for the patient type. Who can not spend hours figuring out the background i think will not understand the game's beauty. For example there is the spaceship at the beginning. Hell a lot of information can be gathered chatting around in there while based on a review one may simply go for the gun "quest" and forget about it. Bad idea! The story is worth to read! Personally i went through the spaceship twice, and i chatted around in there for at least two hours even the second time. Do you know who are the Hoika (sorry if i write the names incorrectly, there are many, and hard to remember them)? Or what DDT stand for (a bit funny if you read :) )? Well, if not, better to start again in my opinion. Then of course it is possible to spend hours figuring out the Iskai too, and so on... So far the background appeared to be extremely rich everywhere, although sometimes it is a bit boring hunting the details... You may even get a few bonus items for being interested though (For example the main chef of the hunters clan will give you some food if you ask the right question after chatting a bit with her, but there are also way more important items hidden behind "minor details"). So i except a great experience on this side - at least if programmers kept up writing the story with the same euthanism. Items - what a lot of them Well, you may end up with a wardrobe of useless items just after the first few rooms... Watch out! But it is way more realistic this way i think. It is also unique to this game that they also has weight, so you can not carry around a house of equipment like in other games. I think this approach to items good, but it sometimes bugs me that you may still pick almost anything you like almost anywhere you like without consequences. Would you like if someone barged in your house, and emptied your cupboards without a word? :P (Well, of course Iskai may have different views on propety...) Controls. Is the 3D part really that crap? Shortly i do not think so. I tell this after succesfully getting through the old Dij-Fadh building with a bunch of monsters, traps, and hidden parts (Did you figure out - without walkthrough! - from where the strange noises came from which you heard in some areas in some rooms not far from the entrace?). I liked the idea of being able to control everything with mouse. It is an unique approach, and for me the controls are all fine both in the 2D and 3D parts. Of course the second is what may bring problems. Yes, it may be complicated first (but that is what the service area in the ship is for! You can learn it without consequences there), but in a short while it is easy to get used to it. A small hint: If you place the mouse in the lower center of the view area, a down arrow will appear, pressing it will make you looking at the ground. That way you can avoid traps. For looking up, bring the mouse to the top center point of the view area. Yes, it is possible to get stuck in the wall, but this is not that bad. Of course maybe that i am okay with the controls is because of that i never liked first person shooter games. But again: it is not the game designers' fault that there weren't anything to follow back then when they designed the game. Graphic Great! Just great to the time in all aspect, and it is okay even today. I mean that usually everything is well distinguishable, that you should never be unable to complete something because you can not figure out what you see on the screen. It is just pleasing and fine (both the 2D and the 3D parts), in the 3D parts the sprites in my opinion are also well done apart from that they are always facing with you (the limitation of using 2D sprites in 3D), but this is not so annoying. On the other hand for me the scaling soutine used on the sprites is excellent, at least i had seen similar technologies with either crappy rendering, or unbelieveably incorrect matching to the perspective. Here neither applies. So i like both parts. The 2D parts have good visual look, while the 3D parts offer more realistic look on the surrounding environment. They look different, you understand them differently, they being used together makes you able to feel the fantasy wold much better the authors construated. Sounds and music Well, this part is not the greatest, but it is neither bad. The many effects are nice, and add to the atmosphere, but they tend to go repetitive. For example if you have to listen to a short monotonic water sample during a whole lengthy conversation. The music is also good, but maybe could be better. It is not bad though. Maybe if i listened it as midi, not through the FM support of my sound card, i would have better opinions (i could write before a quite nice sounding FM midi player, so it may not FM's fault that it sounded bad, but the midi to FM translation layer's). Programming Above average. The game usually behaves good, but sometimes not, although the bugs i discovered so far are not so grave. They do not ruin the game. There are minor bugs in the story (somewhere sometime telling me to rather ask him about a particular subject since he knows it better. No, not how you think. The same conversation node popped up what -others- told...), the game logic (at some point using an item to eliminate something succeeds, but the item does not disappear, while it should be eaten by that eliminated thing...), collision detection (should be noticed from the very beginning), and of course the "stucking at the wall" syndrome on 3D areas. Details, ideas Well, it is clear that a lot had been put in this game. The story looks unique, and extremely well designed, the graphic, now i mean the movements of the characters, although is not perfect, but offers a lot of details: a lot of items to use, a lot of different looking characters all around in a single town which looks much larger (the exploreable areas, and the contactable characters) like any other RPG's of that and even later times, and, not to mention, the unique image of every party member on the character screens (It striked me as i had never seen such before in any other game. A little detail which in my opinion worth it's weight in gold). And of course the (so far) outstanding background of the story. There is a lot in this piece, and, although this may only be judged well after i played it through, it does not even eats up a load of hard drive for it (At least compared to the details it offers). Great! So basically that would be it. My first opinions of this game what i obviously will play through, at least if i can :) I think the programmers put everything in this piece what they could - or well, rather the story writers, and designers - some helping hand at programming would not hurt. But anyway, the technical background is far from miserable (i guess you had seen such... If not, well, try something like Cheetahmen II, then you will adore the programmers of this game :P), it is fine enough to not ruin what the story gives. So a great game, definitely worth the five rating on the review area :) |
Damn, and yeesh, i forgot to ask what i originally wished: Is there a way to remove cursed item (Poor Drirr got it...) from a character? Or i should have turned to the mighty "save game" feature this case? :P Just tell "yes" or "no", nothing more, i will figure the rest out myself :D
|
omg, My friend and I loved this game to death back in the days... We played the demo to the max (got all the spells for Sira, the lance for Drir, got to lvl 20 or so), then saved up to get the original game. Neither of us finished it, tho. Got stuck in the Dji Kantos dungeon T.T
Can somebody please send me a saved game just before that dungeon?? For old times' sake, I'd like to finally finish that game. |
This cursed game ties me in front of my PC. It just gets better and better, appearantly the story writers got in the mood as they designed it. The music also got way more livery :) (OK, i even found it myself how i can get rid of those cursed items) I could not even except something this well designed, at least as i remember this outperforms anything i had seen before. Final fantasy (I mean FF VII which i played through) just gets a "medicore" rating after seeing this! :D

Alright, I've read all 10 of these pages and still can't get this thing working.
I've tried running it on dosbox and VDMSound. With dosbox, I can actually get the game to run, but I get an error after I start a new game from the main menu. The error log says: BBERROR: ERRORSTACK START:-------------- Sound: AIL error : XMIDI sound hardware not found With VDMSound, I can set and save my sound options, but I can't get past the "no cd" problem. I've tried right clicking on every .exe and every .bat and choosing "run with VDMS" but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
it looks like you have wrong midi selected. when using dosbox, you need to set your soundblaster first. run setup first, set "ad lib music card or 100% compatible" for music and "creative labs SB pro or 100% compatible" for sound card.

I found a "cheat" (well, not really a cheat, but somewhat alike) what does not seem to be documented anywhere - yet - ! ;)
So this is it: Well, Sira, and Mellthas are inseperable. Is that a problem? Well, why on the Earth would be if they together make a deadly combination (for some enemies)! :) You need two things: Sira's Frost Avalanche maxed out, and Mellthas Demon Exodus (it looks like it works fine even without developing it to the maximum). And of course an area with loads of demons (For example the enemy 'Animal 3' who in large quantities are quite deadly otherwise, but give lots of experience if defeated). If you found the right spot to gain that experience, place everyone in the back row (you will definitely regret it if you forget this critical step if you want to use the method against demons which you would avoid like plague otherwise. Even if you max out Sira's speed with a speed amulet, the enemies may still be faster!). Then in the first round, cast Sira's frost avalanche, and, if there are enough monsters so that you can make sure a row will hit some, Mellthas' Demon Exodus. The next rounds use Mellthas's Demon Exodus only: the maxed out Frost Avalanche should make the enemies frozen for (including the cast round) three rounds, so Mellthas may banish three rows of demons. Some may remain, those are up to you how you get rid of them (Another Frost Avalanche, or if you feel your party strong enough, 'simply' beat). Note that although the method is certainly expensive on spell points, the magicians may even work it out from their life points if you wish to save on potions (especially for Mellthas, then Sira may heal him, or Harriet later). But as a reward in some areas with this it is possible to get loads of experience :) (I tried out this mostly in Umajo, before going to the Toronto. Accidentally i gone down to the Equipment Makers' guild's prison since i though the story continues there, but appearantly not. Anyways i gained at about 5 to 6 levels down there eliminating demons, to the end Tom was at lv. 30, Sira at 29, Drirr at 28. I do not know the rest now. I hope i did not mess up down there anything what would make further progress later impossible forcing me to throw away that save with those loads of exp. :P ) |
Please, could someone tell me the controls? I can't figure out how to "search" or open doors or anything like that. I really want to play this game it looks filled with retro-awesomeness.
|
I don't remember that exactly but just try the stadards:

This game had great storytelling, great story, and great graphics and graphical perspective.
The combat system was totally lame an monotonous though. This almost should have been an adventure game instead, IMHO. |

Hey,
does anyone of you happen to have the SOUND EFFECTS midi or mp3 files from Albion? I really want to make Sira's spell casting sound effect into a mobile ringtone. So far, all I've found are the soundtrack midi. If you happen to have it, or is able to extract it somehow, can you send me an e-mail [kelabu@gmail.com] with the attachement (or not, depends)? And I promise I will share it. Thanks! Albion was my very first PC game that I own. I still treasure it and keeping the disc really well!!! |
Get some ripper programs - lime FME, Mripper, Ripper and so on - and run them through the game's files.
|
Can anyone help me with a bug I'm experiencing? After the council meeting, as I am told to go search the city for myself, the game just sort of freezes. It's like we are supposed to auto-move or something but we get stuck. I can move the mouse, and occasionally objects scroll quickly across the very lower part of the screne. Any ideas? Iv've tried everything I can think of.

English review of this site, translate in Italian language by me :)
Inoltre, molti oggetti ritrovabili in giro renderanno piÃđ tardi lâavventura molto piÃđ semplice. |
I kno this sounds extremely stupid, but I can't do anything besides walking around how do you talk to people? how do you open the cabinet thing on his left in the beginning? What are the controls? I'm really confused...

i just have a question, i read the review, but i didnt understand one thing, is this your standard western RPG where you have a million choices in the game or more like a JRPG where you are forced to follow the same line over and over again?
|
is it possible to put the intros in the game? i cant seem to get that working? please simply say yes or no and ill discover how can i put it if its yes, no explanation necessary
|
no,just watch it on youtube
|
I can't seem to find anyone who's had this problem before, so ...
I have no cursor. Literally, there is no in-game cursor. Sometimes it flashes up momentarily in a flickery sort of way, but I can't do anything with it. And without a cursor, obviously I can't move or ... well, do anything. Any idea what's going on here? Running DosBox 0.72. |
thats strange, never happened to me. did you try other versions of dosbox? also, do you get any cursor when you set no sound in setup.exe and run the game via pure windows?

Click the mouse or use CTRL+F10 for forced mouse lockon.

Hi all. My name is Jurie Horneman and I was the lead programmer and co-designer on Albion. I just wanted to say thanks for all the nice comments, it is great to see so many people enjoyed playing the game or still remember it fondly!
It was made by quite a small team (4 people full-time and various people who helped out). We worked on it from the start of 1994 till the end of 1995, and then it took us about six months to get the English and French versions done. It started as an Amiga title but Commodore went out of business mid 1994 and we had to switch to the PC ;). We did a massive amount of overtime, but we had almost no creative constraints, which is a rarety these days. The game has its flaws but it is nice to see people like it. :) Cheers, Jurie |
Wow... a lot of great comments on this website.
I am just playing through albion again for oh about the 10th time in 10 years, so here are a few tips/troubleshooting points: -Use the latest dosbox, however a computer with a fairly powerful processor is needed to handle the emulation (At least 12000 without slowdown or cpu reaching 100% in task manager) -Also, try different forms of scaling and rendering combinations in the doxbox.cfg file to get it to work perfectly. -Set frameskip to 1 and core to auto or dynamic -The game is a mostly a mouse game, with right-click bringing a menu up of things to do. -Recharging magic items is possible. (Im not saying how/where/who etc. because it ruins the fun!!) -The bug mentioned after talking to Frill for the first time is a known bug where the game freezes (not limited to dosbox). Only option is to restore previous saved game and try again. -It is possible to edit albion saves infact I used to edit the saved games with a hex editor to give items to characters that are difficult to find or are one of a kind :bleh: To Jurie Horneman :kosta: , thank you very very much for delivering a game that is truly one of a kind. I do hope that one day a sequel/remake could be considered! :ok: |

But I have two question also, I hope you'll visit this site again: 1., There was a room in one town I can not remember the town's name, and the building, but I think it was a Townhall and in the middle of the building there was a room with a chest. I was unable to open the room's door and also unable lockpick, etc. I read also on Internet, that nobody find the solution for that. So I am curious if it is possible to open that room somehow??? 2., Is it possible to reach the all maximum abilities with the characters? After some upgrades flowers do not increase it.... |
I dislike the 3D part of the game. It actually made me sick :( A shame because apart from that this game looked great.

yeah, same with me=/ if they put more effort in developement of 2d scenes instead of making 3d ones it would be so much better

LOL it was me who said about using a hex editor to edit the saves :bleh:. Using a hexeditor to edit the saves is a difficult and can be time consuming process....but fun.
Also...as one guy said above: you shouldn't cheat in a game like albion! :titan: ...which i tend to agree haha. And i'd like to advise to all those who have never finished the game not to try it...it will ruin your fun! Now for those who have finished it and want to edit... I have only really found ways to edit character info (basically everything you see on screens 1 2 and 3 in the character screen and backpack). But naturally you should be able to edit most things if you know where to find them in the save file! Firstly you must back up the saved game you wish to edit. I use a hex editor to edit the saves...scroll down to the character's name (about 1/3 the way down) and start changing numbers and look for changes in game! Backpack item entrys look like this: 01 00 00 3C 00 The 01 specifies the number of that particular item you carry. I belive that the 00 00s in the middle specify the number of charges the item has (if it is magic item) and its spell that it casts. (This particular item has no charges and is not magical as both values are 00) The 3c specifies the item (i.e. what is it, a sheild a knife a tablecloth etc). It may not be 3c, 3c in this case may mean the item is a helmet, 2A may be a ring etc. each item in albion has a unique hexadecimal value. The final number is a strange number and I dont exactly know what it is. It must remain either as 01 OR 00 I believe. Try editing it to see what happens. If you make this a 03 or 04 the game may crash. You can edit the characters stats and portrait also. This information is kept just above their name in the saved game file when viewing it with a hex editor. It has been years since i have played around with it properly, but editing these values will mostly effect that particular character's stats (i.e. what is on character screen 2). You can change what a character looks like in the 2D sections of the game, however I have been only able to change it to the same model as another party member....(you'll understand what I mean if you try it). If anyone is able to make a party memeber look like another NPC from the game, i.e. make rainer look like sebai li winn...tell me! :ok: email me with questions if you wish: sheldon_is_here@hotmail.com Thanks and good luck. PS - dont do this if you haven't played it through! |
i found that the easiest way to take care of the "insert CD" problem was to edit the SETUP file. not the executable, the other one. i changed the fourth line to read:
SOURCE_PATH=C:\ALBION\CD\ALBION\ where i had installed the game to C:\ALBION\ then moved the directory CD into the game directory. im pretty sure this just told it to look there for the cd. |

Hi, everyone. I just started playing Albion and it seems like a great game. However, there is a small issue that I could use help with that is causing some problem for me.
I found a pdf copy of the manual on another site, and it gave me the impression that when the mouse scrolls over an object you can interact with such as a cabinet or chest, the pointer turns from the regular grey arrow to a gold arrow. I'm not getting this effect at all however, running it in DosBox on my MacBook. The only time the cursor turns gold is when I place it over Tom himself. This is really annoying because I have no way to tell if I can interact with an object except to hold the apple button and click on it to simulate a right click. Frequently only the "Main Menu" option pops up and I have to simulate another right click to exit. I'm not sure I can play through a game which seems to be so massive and immersive with this trial and error approach to finding what objects I can interact with. Thanks in advance for your help. Does the cursor turn gold for anyone else and if so how do you think I can get this to happen for me? |

Does anyone know the specific instructions to increase attributes in Argim encounters? I just can't remember it and as far as I know there's no option to repeat it.
Thank you very much. Steve |
You can only use the gift given by agrim in return for the music crystal once....he will give you a hint to finding the 'gift' once you promise to bring him the music crystal. It involes the room with the glowing footprint trails and the preglowing rainbowbushes in the old former building.... :ok:

You can increase attributes:
-by training -in Argim's encounters -by Flowers Have anybody other ideas, how to increase attributes? All characters has place for that, but I never can reach to be on maximum with all attributes... Szilvio |
Hello,I'm new here:)
I'm Amiga fan but also I like PC DOS games and other systems. I played and completed Ambermoon(in Amiga) not long time ago.Ambermoon is of the same Albion creators,in fact Ambermoon is considered the prequel besides of Amberstar. I have tried to play Albion several times but always I have the same problem.I have used Albion ripped version from Abandonia and also one full CD version. This is the problem: At the beginning of the game after the alien muder, you speak with a alien called Drill. After speaking with him about finding of the alien assassin the game freezes and you cannot move the characters! This problem happens to me in lastest DOSBox version+DOSBox Game Launcher(frontend) and also executing the game directly from XP. I understand that it's a problem difficult to solve but any advice I thank for it Thank you!:) |
it happens a lot, try disabling sound, different core (full/dynamic) and changing ram in dosbox.cfg

Hi guys, i have a problem. I forgot the "red key card" in the dead ai body and saved after i killed the last ai body. My other savegame is very old. I read about a cheat to go through walls, but it don't work. Anybody knows a solution for my problem?

Problem solved, i manipulate the savefile.

Hi, I have just downloaded Albion and installed it but it won't play. The line says I have to put a CD in which I did but still no go. Can anyone help. I have the latest DOS BOX installed and have had little or no trouble so far with the games I have played . Would appreciate help to play this game..SAL:)

Problem fixed
Thanks 5th Horseman,
After trying to play the game in DOS with no success whatsoever I found that the solution was to play it in Windows XP. No problems at all so far. Perhaps it would be an idea to mention that on the game download site?.....SAL:) |
I own the cd version of albion and installed it a week ago. the first moments brought back some very good memories of my old 486 mashine w/ all the dos games.
after all, i reached now the third isle and decided to choose siobhan. but after she reached a new level, she only has 1 attack per turn (was 2 before). even with level 10 she doesnt get an extra attack (like drirr). is this a bug? a remembered her as the toughest fighter. |
heeeeelp
i kept playin this great game for years till i lend the cd to a fried and never get it back :-) BUT in the downloadable version occurs a prolem ive never seen before! Right after the murder-scene (when the character returns after 2 days to the central building. its at the very beginning of the game) u have to talk to the aeons old whise cat (sorry cant remember the names :-) )and then to chase the murderer. direct after quitting the dialogue with the whise one the game freezes! Does anyone have the same poblem or a solution for it? greetings JustMe |
I haven't heard of this game until now, but the review makes it sound really fun. I'll be playing this game as soon as I figure out how to get DOSbox working.

Apparently Unsolvable
I remember playing this game as a little kid, but now I can't run it. I do hope someone here has solved this problem, or at least has some idea what to do:
Running any file in the Albion folder, either on its own or in DOSbox results in a black screen, occasionally preceded by a flash of text too brief to read, meaning, presumably, that it has automatically gone full-screen. The only way to escape this is Alt-Tab. Running with VDMSound (tried configuring it with Roland sound blaster as well) garners the same results as above, except that rather than seeing the program name on the taskbar, it now says 'VDMS Launchpad'. I can only assume my files are corrupt, then, except that I've downloaded from several different sites, and re-unRAR'd it at least a dozen times. Also (secondary to the above), upon attempting to run any program CD-style (from Albion\CD\ALBION), either standalone or with DOSbox, I receive the error message that DOS4GW cannot be found. Just for the hell of it, I copied it to the aforementioned folder from the main folder, only to come up against a no-CD error (which I have tried to fix using the methods in this thread, to no avail). I have a Pentium 4 with XP Home Edition. I would love a solution, and obviously any suggestion you can make is welcome. Please help, I loved this game! |
Loving this game, one of the best RPG's I've ever played. I actually like the 3D parts of the game, they keep it intresting ;)

Lost in Desert!
So I went with Ohl to find the passage through the boulder belt by Umajo-Kenta, and I entered the passage. In the passage, shown in 3-d, there are two exits: one going east and one going south. I found out later as I was searching through walkthroughs for help that the east one is useless and you're supposed to go through the south one. Well, I went through the east one which led me outside in the desert. I looked all around and didn't find the Toronto, because I didn't know then that the Toronto was outside of the other entrance. My problem: I can't find my way back into the passage! I've tried for over an hour to find the entrance back to the passage, I'm pretty sure it's in the northeast part of this area, in all the rocks, but I can't find it through all the annoying rocks. My only recent save is one I saved in this area, not helping me at all.
Help would be very much appreciated! If you can direct me to a link of some kind of map in this area, a walkthrough that actually tells how to get out of this part, or if you happen to know it yourself, please do so. I've searched and searched through google, but no success. |
Hey all! Albion is a fantastic game, one of the first I ever played.
Just wondering has anyone ever run the patch for it? It updates it to version 1.38 and is able to be downloaded from the Bluebyte website. Check it out. You can google the patch and see if you can find it also! I am yet to try it but am interested to see what changes are made! EDIT: It can be found here: http://www.bluebyte.net/ger/downloads/default.asp?id='' Thanks, Sheldon |
I found it!
I finally found how to get out of that horrible desert spot!
If anyone wants to know, the entrance to the passage is near the water on the northeast side of the part you are on. It's near a row of impassable small rocks that lead from the water. |
Hello!
I have two questions about the battle system: 1. On which factor is it depending how many times a charakter can strike/shoot? Some can two times, some only one time. There are now informations about this in the charakter stats or the manual :( 2. Tom at the beginning has 25/70 distance fighting skills. But as soon as I give him a pistol, he gets 80/70. How this? Stats above the maximum? And even with this stats, he often misses his target :( Thanks to anyone how can say something about this :) |
Hi,
Your first question is something that has always intrigued me too. I think that the number of times a character strikes in a turn is a property of both the character type (for example Drirr is an Iskai Warrior) and the level that that particular character is at. Drirr hits twice in one turn quite early in the game, perhaps ~ level 10, whereas Tom does not strike twice in one round until much later in the game > level 20 if at all. Your second question is a little easier. You will find that as you progress through the game you may get many stats above their maximum. Many weapons and items and special locations will raise the value of certain attributes and skills of your characters. Specifically with regard to combat, you will only make contact every turn if your close combat skill level is at or above 100. But since Tom's maximum close combat value is 70, you will need to find objects or weapons that raise his close combat skill. Once an attribute or skill is above its maximum for a particular character the bar will turn yellow in the attribute screen. Also remember that certain equipable items can in fact lower certain attribute and skill levels of your characters. I believe this is supposed to simulate the weight, bulkiness, restriction of mobility and quality of such items. For example, chain mail reduces both short and long range combat skills due to the weight and restriction of movement of the character that has it equipped. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask :) Quote:

Awesome.
I got a Blue Byte demo disk back in the 90s that had a demo for this on it.
I wasn't even aware that it wasn't sold anymore... it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played. The demo only ran until you leave the Iskai continent. So this is refreshing. =-) Thanks, Abandonia! |

The copy of the game we have here is a rip.
As in: Some of the data has been removed to reduce the size. No music, no videos, no intro. |
It might be ripped because of filesize issues.

Run setup first IN dosbox. -> Click on Configure Sound Hardware. -> Choose for MIDI: Soundblaster 16-> configure automatically -> OK -> Choose for digital: Soundblaster 16 or AWE -> configure automatically -> OK -> Done -> Exit program Run with ALBION. No problems. |

help a newbie: "not enough memory on exec"

I'm a newbie with the DOSbox and VDMSound games, so any help is appreciated -- and let me know if I need to provide more info. Cheers  |
don't run it from cd directory, run albion.bat

Tried that first, but I then get an error telling me to insert the Albion CD...?

oh, you need to run "SETUP.EXE" first (via vdmsound/dosbox) and configure your sound hardware, choose soundblaster/soundblaster pro 100% or compatible; with settings 220,7,1 or just leave it "detect automatically"

Chrono Trigger is for (in order of releases) SNES, PlayStation and Nintendo DS. Such games are not offered for free, exactly... Oh, and an emulator is an... emulator; It emulates the hardware of a console, and, assuming you have a ROM (which is a virtual image of a cartridge-based game... basically...or well, to put in an easy way at least), you can play it through a specific emulator (which is just a program). Obviously you cannot play SEGA games through a NES emulator. But anyway... I suppose you could say an emulator is a virtual console. Yes. Not gonna help you further on your road to piracy, however. You're on your own now. Have fun! |
Dang...the Flowers of the Goddess on the Dji-Cantos island are giving me fits. How long exactly does it take for the 'magical energies' to be regenerated, and how many uses can you get out of them?
|
Quote:
- I tried to figure out how many times or how many uses you can get, but different gameplay gave different amount. I think max. is about 20x. But as I know, other players had better luck, reported more possibilities... - DO NOT train this way members, which will leave the party (e.g. Rainer) - Good to train Sira to be faster... :) - Good to make a map (if you don't have it) and visit all flowers in each visit. - Do not train someone, who has maximum skills, as it not gives extra skill points. (Be aware, that "magical items" has also influence on skills, so it can happen, that you think you are on max, but you can still train, or if some equipment takes some skill lower, than max, you agin can not maximize your skills... etc.) (I was always curious if you can teach Drirr to magic, as he has the skill bar and Godness flower can increase his skill from 0 till 20 (if I remeber well), but I never tried to train him to the max. Only few times visited with him magic flower, but than he never wanted to learn magic at magic teachers... :) I guess he is a "warrior" type, so he never spell fireball, which is a pity... :) ) |
A sidestep...
Hi!
Can anyone tell me what has changed in the Albion-section? I noticed that something was added today, but I can't seem to figure out what exactly. When searching the featured games/ RPG it says "Albion" under the latest additions. Nothing is mentioned however under the latest news heading? Since I think Albion is one of the best RPG's ever, I'd like to make sure I'm not missing out on anything. Thanks and regards! |

Regarding Screen Shots
To get your screen shot try using Print Screen on your keyboard. Also don't forget to on your printer first and make sure your printer can print in color. Hope that helps. If it doesn't, scrap this message.

No simple thing to do in a "mere" computer game. The prison sequence at Umajo is a prime example of this. Tech stuff: The game ran mostly fine on native WinXP Pro, launched from a desktop shortcut to the main exe. There were a few minor glitches, for example the Sleep Spores spell would always generate a system error beep so I never used it (and didn't miss it). Also since the game was displayed full screen on a 22" widescreen monitor, mouse control in 3D mode was tricky, simply because the pointer has to traverse so much screen acreage to activate, e.g. a turn-arrow. I found using the keyboard arrow keys (plus ALT for strafing) to be easier for most navigation. |
Is it just me or does the main story of this game seem very similar to James Camerons new movie Avatar...

Albion is Avatar?
I've noticed a good bit of plot and character similarities between Albion and the upcoming movie Avatar.

AVATAR = ALBION !!
Quote:
1.- Similar characters 2.- At night, the forests glow like seen in Avatar. 3.- Aliens in Albion can "connect" and change thoughts and so on like in Avatar (in Albion they use a special point in their forehead, not their tail) 4.- I remember Albionīs world was connected in some way, not sure if similar as Avatarīs connection.. 5.- James Cameron said he had the idea 15 years ago (or it was 14? ) which is the date when Albion come into the market. TOO MANY AVATAR IDEAS BASED ON ALBION !!! |
Question: Is this one of those games where enemies(the 'common' ones) respawn indefinitely, like say the Gold Box DnD games. Or is it like the Gothic games where enemies do not respawn at all?
Because in the first case, I'm gonna bother to get each of my characters to max skills via grinding the hell out of enemies. If it's the second, I'm gonna prepare myself for getting owned and getting owned bad repeatedly in the game. |
Er..i cant find the right smilies for this.

But you're right, I'll try to take my chances and see if I fuck up, if I do I can always come back and ask for help, or just fuck up until I get it right.:p Also, to those comparing Avatar's story to Albion, I hope you mean it's a lousy ripoff, because after the wow-effect of the great CG in Avatar wore out, I saw it for what it is, a sci-fi reintepretation of the story of Pocahontas with some "Dances with Wolves" thrown in. I hope Albion has a far more original and better developed story than Avatar, otherwise I'm in for a major dissappointment since I had been told this game has one of the best stories ever in an RPG. |
Albion has much better and complicated story, with a lot of possibilities, than Avatar has. :)
At the first village's 2D forest after killing monsters they are comming to life again and again, but you need to visit same area after 1-2 days. You can train your characters there and it is recommended, as Sira can learn good spells in the first village, when you improve her level amd you'll have problems in the second village if you don't train others before. But after they reach character level around 15 is became very boring to hunt same monsters and it is time to go to the second village.... :) |
Game play help please
How do I level Sirra up to level 12 ? I wander around but there are not enough mobs to kill to level up..is there a place where there are more mobs?
|
Quote:
If you want to level up ony Sira, than when you see that last monster(s) is/are near death, click withdrawal for the other characters, so only Sira remains in fight, she will kill the last monster and get all experience points... But I never did that, I was patient and leveled up all characters. It later paied-off, because second island with low level characters is very hard. :) I hope it helps for you. :) |
Sound Issues
Ok I've read the previous posts about this issue but still can't seem to resolve my problem. I can run the intro fine ( i dont have the image from this site but downloaded from another one instead). When it gets to the actual game though, it quits out with an error log same as some other peeps...

Hi All - this is my first post ever on this great site!
Thanks Abandonia for many hours(erm... that should be weeks) of me reliving memories of the past. I had been going back and forth downloading Albion for about a year now - I remembered playing it years ago and knew that I never even left the first house. But I'm VERY glad I made the download, the game blew me away. Was amazed to see that this thread for Albion goes back to 2006 and then saw the latest reply was recent. Not a very easy game, but I love it (Mad for the RPG elements and story so far has been great*). Good luck to all who haven't finished the game yet (me included, still on the first Island, just managed to finish the first dungeon.) |

Albion and Avatar
Quote:
I've noticed it as well. Apart from the things that you mention, there is also: 1. Both Pandora and Nakiridaani are lush jungles. 2. One of the animals in Albion, the Krondir, also has the Trii, the organ for "connecting", and many animals on Pandora have their "connecting" organs. 3. The Na'vi have some carbon hard things in their body (can't remember quite what) and the Iskai have additional bone perturbations. 4. A human and an Iskai fall in love in Albion, and in Avatar a Na'vi and a human (in avatar form, though) fall in love. 5. There is a Goddess both in Avatar and in Albion. 6. The point of corporate greed. There are innumerable differences as well, of course. Albion is a different world than Pandora (even Nakiridaani is), with some large cities, a different society, higher technology, has native humans, magic, which does not appear in Avatar (except if you count the animals attacking in the end as magic), etc. I am not sure whether James Cameron played Albion. While some similarities are striking, the differences are as well. Besides, some of the similarities are common in story telling - jungles, corporate greed, colonization, cat people, conflict of cultures, fascination with glowing things, etc. So, in my opinion, either the similarities are a coincidence, or Cameron and Albion had a common inspiration - some book, an older movie... |
Game immersion
Hey everyone,
I've just recently started playing this game, and I am now in Beloveno. The game story features a very interesting setting, and the script seemed to be very good. I was especially surprised by how the conversations in Nakiridaani made sense, how they payed attention to details, how that Old Former's dungeon made sense, etc. I could really immerse myself into the game world, which I am very rarely able to do, and it was easy to ignore some complete gamey nonsense, like a 23rd century pilot being able to wield a sword and wear armor just right away, or use a bow and arrow. However, it all started going down in Gratogel, and the entire experience started looking like a game, rather than a world I could immerse myself into. "Hello. I am Rifrako, a merchant in an insignificant little village with orchards, and I happen to have magical items. Very profitable to be dealing with such things here." And then you go off killing those bandits in order to earn enough money to buy better equipment. "What will we do today? I know, lets go to that mountain pass and wait for bandits to attack us, so we can sell their goodies, and buy better equipment. And, we can improve our magic abilities in the process." Repeat 7 times. Oh, wow, so interesting, so full of immersion, ties well into the story. Of course, you can say that I don't have to do that, but I do, because I need to survive those Animals in Arjano. And Arjano was a blast - oh look, for some reason, there are these wild flying animals, warniaks, just lounging around in this dungeon, for 400 years, waiting for me to kill them, and gain XP. And, obviously, somebody had a knack for making perfectly logical traps - why not just make pressing this floor plate move green barriers around, while at the same time starting a fire? That just makes sense in the war that happened here - I'm sure the enemies would be bored to death by puzzles. And, it's oh so very immersing, interesting, and "in the story" to be walking next to walls in a careful search for buttons, which open rooms, closed for 4 centuries, where wild animals have been subsisting on stale air, ever since Drinno was sealed off from the rest of Arjano. And why? So you could pick up an item! Yay, I'm so very happy! It's a good trade-off: get to boost your characters in exchange for immersion. So, I hoped that Beloveno would be different. But no. There I am, walking into a stranger's residence, and saying: "You look like a magician." "Why yes, it's tatooed on my forehead.", said the stranger. "Well, would you like to come with us on our quest, complete stranger?", said I, explaining in short what the quest is. "Of course. Why not? I always accept invitations by strangers who walk into my house. Especially if it's a quest for searching for giant metal objects which fall from the sky, which makes no sense whatsoever for me.", says the magician. "Good. Well, we just first have to go kill some krondirs, warniaks, and the like, so your magic can become more powerful. Not absoultely necessary, I know, but we seem to have such luck, you know, running into fights, so we better have you in top shape. True, you say you never were so powerful as you are now, but that's just bull. Look here, this much younger and more inexperienced girl here, Sira, is so much more powerful than you. But that's because we were in this dungeon where wild animals have subsisted on air for 400 years.", says the party. "Well, that must have been some dungeon! Good, we're off to kill some game!", and so we go off, wandering around, camping a bit in the nature, and killing the creatures of Albion. Then, after a while, I go to Kuonos, and realize that I cannot ask anyone about Toronto. And then I kill a guard inside a house, while the denizens around not notice anything. And I go into a dungeon, with colorful force fields, and a puzzle to open them. And then to another magician, who does not seem to be concerned that I killed his guard, and whom I also cannot ask about Toronto. Then I open a walkthrough, and read that I am supposed to go to Kariah (who told me nothing the first time), and get a quest. Fine, I load, go there, and, lo and behold, comes a perfectly meaningful conversation. "Hello. Welcome to my house. You know, you look like you can handle yourself well. Well, I have to tell you - some of my customers told me that two of our councilors care only about themselves. Can you kill them?", says Kariah. "Well, not quite. You got carried away, haven't you? But, we'll go ask around about them and get back to you.", which is, I am sure you'll agree, a perfectly sensible answer, to a perfectly sensible question. "Good, do that. Yes, I do get carried away, but know that you would make a lot of people happy if you killed them.", Kariah said. We ignored her subtle insisting on us killing those councilors. "By the way, can I ask you about this big giant metal object falling from the sky? Has any of your customers mentioned that?" "I can't say anything about that." "Oh, OK. Sorry to have asked. I'll be off now, to find some information about your councilors." Poof - there went the last vestiges of the illusion and immersion I had. A living world became a map, with dots, where you can boost your stats, after you've done something else, e.g. killed raoming monsters (i.e. roaming dots). The fact that it looks like shops, gold, creatures, etc. are in play, became just a bad illusion. A living, breathing city, like I felt Nakiridaani was, became just a cover for those dots. People became points where you get instructions on how to find the next puzzle, a next dot on the map, and in that puzzle there would be, among other things, some flying balls, pretending to be fireballs (flying completely pointlessly in a puzzle like setting), which you must not touch. And some other stat (XP) boosting dots, waiting patiently behind the next portcullis, which are there just so that you can boost your stats, and to protect some other stat boosting bit of computer code (pretending to be an item). So, what started off as a very immersive game, with attention to detail, with some thought provoking elements (e.g. the Vatican being watched by the EU, and children protected from religion, because it's harmful), believable characters and conversations, etc. just transformed into a disappointment. And, I'm really sorry about that, because Albion seemed very promising. However, I am still interested in the main story, and, most importantly, about how they explained the magical part in the end. If somebody would care to write a few sentences about that, I would be very grateful. (I can find walkthroughs, but no story line anywhere on the Internet.) I know that I won't be able to bring myself to play Albion further, but I do want to know this part. Thanks in advance! |
Walking into other people's homes, level grinding and looting the enemies' corpses, is typical RPG gaming, although Albion's dialogues could be a bit better. Personally, I could immerse myself to the story, but maybe being 14 years old when I played it helped a lot with this.:perv: Hell, each people had its own language! It seemed very original to me back then.
Part of the game background required the player to read through entire pages of dialogue partially unrelated to the game's plot. That's right, ENTIRE PAGES. FULL OF TEXT. That's why I couldn't fully grasp the story either. Only thing I understood, was that Albion's Celts were REAL Celts from OUR Earth, that somehow (through magic maybe) managed to travel to Albion. That, and the fact that the Iskai were the real indigenous inhabitants of Albion. |
having some trouble here. i've used the batch file and all the exe's and nothing seems to get albion running on dosbox. not sure what i'm doing wrong. can someone walk me through the basics? i can run Trazere and High Seas Trader and CnC and a bunch of other games, but not Albion. frustrating.

I think this will solve your problem, run the setup.exe and change the top sound card to Sound Blaster Pro (I used New).

Does anyone know if source code was ever released? I can't find anything relevant. Try typing "Albion" in Google and get flooded with sites about England or Fable...
I like this game very much and I've done some multiplatform (ie. something that runs both on Windows and Linux) computer game programming before. I'd like to try my skills in bringing a new life to this game, perhaps even "fix" the gameplay issues everyone has been complaining about. Any idea who I might try to email in order to ask for the code? Ubisoft? :woot: |
I was so used to just barging in people's homes (been playing RPG's for some 25 years or so) that when I encountered a locked door I didn't know what to do. Maybe it was in Morrowind? Don't remember. I was sure it was something great behind the door. I broke in and got into trouble. Nothing but a boring house...

Else you could try using some disassembly/decompilation tools (Results May Vary). |
I've been toying around with the 'schnosm' cheat. It seems that the game has some unused content and a lot of test maps. Try teleporting to map index 210. It's a whole new continent filled with random jungle stuff.
Teleporting to map 211 gives you psychedelic graphics and a message about the main quest phase (I think) and then about Herras's status. I was also curious when Rainer gets the second attack so I used ALT+F7 shortcut cheat to get him to the place where infinite Animals are spawned. Here's the result: http://zalewa.dyndns.org/robert/pic/...7-04-48-91.jpg Oh, my... Also, since Rainer is obviously the best character in the game, I used the ALT+F7 cheat to do this: http://zalewa.dyndns.org/robert/pic/...2-26-31-11.jpg (the horror, the horror...) Seriously now, regarding Rainer: When I was younger I hated this character for being completely useless in combat but now I can see that he brings a lot to the plot and the story background. And last, but not least: If anyone ever wondered what happens if you ... |
wow man that's a lot of cool stuff

I'm having some problems with the speed in this game.
It works fine for the first part. But when I leave the first town, time seems to be going by super fast. Is there any way to slow it down? |

About the other criticism: What you describe is just typical RPG-gameplay of that era, the stuff many old school players miss in todays games. They don't make games like they used to ... and that's a good thing. :P But to be fair one has to admit that compared to many other games released back then Albion at least tried to be immersive. Ok, the clumsy dialogue (yes, even in German it's not very good) doesn't help but many other things like the beautiful pixel art and the very detailled plot do. And to hell with logical dungeon design, switch puzzles are great! |
Mouse too clunky? Try the arrow keys!
Hello! Great game here, thanks for making it available! I've been enjoying it so far. =)
I'd like to point out something that may not have been addressed earlier - if it has been, I apologize. I've discovered that you can, in fact, control your characters with the arrow keys on overworlds and, more importantly, inside dungeons and cities. You can move forwards, backwards, and turn pretty quickly, and it's a huge help. I can see what the developers were trying to do with the controls in the 3D areas, making the game completely mouse-controlled, but for those areas it's a bit clunky and slow. The "diagonal" movement arrows in the corners can be annoying when you just want to turn without moving and click in the wrong area. Another thing, the arrow keys (which includes numpad arrows) will work as long as your cursor is over the main game window, not the bottom area with the character portraits. So if the arrow keys stop working, make sure your cursor is over the main gameplay area. |
Do you guys play this game still? Who is better Siobhan or Khunag, facing a choice there. The thing is, i think Siobhan a better but i heard Khunag is involved in some sidequests. So maybe i should ask if Siobhan is talkative or is just a silent puppet?
|
Spoilers
Mega Spoilers ahead don't read if you don't want to know!!!
When I reach Maini I almost always choose Siobhan. She doesn't say much, but she can use some of the best equipment that no one else can. When she is all decked out with the best gear, she is probably the strongest character in the game. SPOILERS (You've been warned): - - - - Khunag is an essential character for the later quest through the Kengent Kamulos underground city/dungeon and the game wont let you go there without him. It's not essential to pick him up as soon as you arrive at Maini for the first time though. Anytime after Melthas and Sira leave at the end of Maini you can go back and pick up Khunag and have him in your party as well as Siobhan. I often go to the Kengent Kamulos city with the following party: Tom, Drirr, Harriet, Siobhan and Khunag. Yes you miss out on the powerful spells of Melthas and Sira, and yes you will only have 5 members, but you get Siobhan. That way your party is much less reliant on magic and you can deal with the monsters that have a high magic resistance. Afterwards you can ditch one of them for the final mission to the Toronto and take Melthas and Sira or you can keep them both and pick up Joe for the 6th spot. |
I gave this a 1 since I can't give a game any higher that doesn't actually work. It seems to "install" just fine but when I run it in DOSBox, it just kicks me right out. Too bad, sounded interesting.

different problem
My problem isn't the sound...my problem is that i can't get this game to work. Every time i click on something to get it going i receive a message about how my system doesn't support full screen mode.
I have played various games in full-screen mode, and i remember this game very well. I would love to play it again...but how? also i remember i originally stopped playing because i could never get past the words. There is a section where you have to sneak into the mines to hear the incantation for keeping evil spirits out of the mines, and i would hide to get the words...but when i would report it, i was told that they were the wrong words. I repeated the quest over and over, but never got anywhere. |

Same problem here. But I solved it this way: - in setup.exe: no music, no sound - run the game in Win XP with main.exe (not in dosbox) - reload a savegame just before meeting with council - set Tom as a leader - be outside (in town, but not in a building) when Tom says "It is time for us" Maybe not each item from this list above is crucial, but it worked for me. Maybe it will help somebody... Great and inspiring game, anyway :) Hippoo |
