Glad you like the review :D

I just had to do it because I felt so sorry for people not being able to get such a gem of a game due to there being no review :bleh:

Guest 03-03-2005 09:15 PM

how do you solve the problem of expanded memory?

xg 03-03-2005 09:18 PM

To fix the expanded memory problem with both U7s visit http://exult.sourceforge.net/

LordHogFred 03-03-2005 09:19 PM

Use Exult :P. Exult Homepage

EDIT: hehe beat me to it :bleh:

Kosta 03-03-2005 10:03 PM

There is note about how to disable EMS in dosbox at the end of the review!

Finally!!!!!!! :Brain: :Brain: :Brain:

After waiting for almost a year.. (not to mention the years before that..) anyway, just curious.. is the silver seed included? or it's just the serpent isle?

humbaba 04-03-2005 02:07 AM

Thanks!
I have unable to play this game since I purchased it the day it came out. The original expanded memory problems were too much for me. Exult is a nice program. I am even putting aside Everquest 2 and Worlds of warcraft to play this one.

gildedgirth 04-03-2005 02:19 AM

Sweet. Nice upload. I'm going to have to try this out on my new Linux box as I noticed there's an Exult version for Linux.

Mad-E-Fact 04-03-2005 08:17 AM

The Silver Seed is included aswell. :)

Variable 04-03-2005 04:26 PM

I know I never ever post, but I had to say this;

This is my favorite game, ever. Not only that, but this game sets my ideal for what I want all of my RPG type games to be. They did everything right. I've played through this many times now, and I never get tired of it. I can recite how to beat the game step by step from memory, I'm that bad :D

On a side note, under Exult, the List Field does not work properly and gets quite buggy. Sadly List Field is one of the few areas to train in the game, and until they fix this, it makes the game very very difficult.

Aloha 04-03-2005 09:08 PM

Gosh, this game brings back such great memories.... Ohhh, how I miss those days.

Dreadlord 04-03-2005 09:08 PM

I like the first part but this one just bored me.

Guest_Chonodhoch 04-03-2005 09:25 PM

:help: This may sound dumb but how do you get a conf file to work or for that mater Exult

Grinder 05-03-2005 08:43 AM

The first part always rushes like crazy on my pc.

bg_drift 07-03-2005 09:21 AM

Hi all, new to this place. :)

btw, just wondering, does this pack include silver seed? or does anyone know where to download silver seed? thx alot!

The Infinite Eternal 07-03-2005 04:51 PM

It should. My copy did.

There is also a program out there called "U7RUN" Once you have it, go to your Dos Prompt, (Go to Start-->Run-->type "cmd") then go to the directory of U7, hopefully with the U7RUN program unzipped there, then type "U7RUN Manimal" for the silver seed cheats, or if not, there was some other convoluted message you have to type to activate the cheats.

But if you can't activate the cheats, you can still enter a relatively major cheat zone in the following fashion:

First, find the key. It unlocks a massive store of weapons. Go get the key, go to the entrance of Gorlab Swamp, just so you can see the actual swamp, but don't go in. Go south until you see one or two large stone towers, and enter it via the secret door, cross the wooden pathways to the west, and continue west until you reach the hidden glade. Check under the stairs near the barrels to find the key. It's hidden deep in a corner. Keep that key.

Secondly, to reach the area itself, which is in the mountains behind Erstam the Mad Mage's laboratory, find Stefano's shack outside of Moonshade. This is NOT the abandoned house of Stefano's inside Moonshade with the green key on the table. Nobody even knows what that unlocks. Once you're at Stefano's shack, you'll see a wooden stump outside the entrance. Pile something up on there and walk around on the stump.

You will be teleported to a very small island with a teleporter, magic axe, and locked chest in it. The locked chest contains somewhere in the vicinity of 200 Guilders. Do what you will with the axe and the guilders, but the real treasure requires a bit of water walking. Walk around on the northeast shore as close to the unwalkable locations as you can, until you manage to break free onto open waters. Keep walking along that narrow walkable pathway northeast a bit, then north, then west, then north, until you reach a cave in the mountains. You're there. Of course, realize that there are naked ladies walking around. NSFW.

Atarlost 10-03-2005 11:58 PM

There's also a non-cheat way to get to the other cheat zone: stand on a stack of two crates between two trees in Monitor. Unfortunately I don't remember which two trees. If you enable egg display in Exult you'll find the spot. There is also an alternate route to the dream realm here which you can use to loot that place, but which can also lose you items since there is no alternate exit.

A third non-cheat cheat is acessed by climbing onto the mountains using a pile of your starting equipment (Use leather pants, boots, shields, and armor) circle around to the south to find an infinity bow. Return to your stairway, descend, pick up your gear, and start the game.

you can find the program mentioned at Ron Windeyer's Webpage

and to activate the "debug menu" here's what you need to add at the command line

Without Silver Seed: "serpent pass"

Guest_FurryThomas 10-04-2005 09:04 AM

This game really sucks. It's boring as hell; I'd rather visit with elderly relatives than play this piece of garbage. I really cannot understand why anyone would like this game, aside from the wankers that programmed it. :D

FreeFreddy 10-04-2005 09:41 AM

You are not forced to play the game if you don't like it. And because it sucks to you, doesn't mean it to does to others, too...

Could such idiotic posts be removed maybe? I have no problem with someone stating that he doesn't like a game, but I can't even make out what this guy wanted to say, and it's annoying to read through a thread when you are looking for info and it's cluttered with nonsense like this.

Steve 03-05-2005 02:59 AM

ummm i think hes tryin to say that after the cinematic introduction the game screen just blacks on ultima the black gate and serpent isle as well. Must be some kind of problem because i seem to be having it as well. And its too bad because iv played most of the 3rd ultima games. Iv played the first part of the 7th one way back when i was in elementry. And it was very difficult to beat. And if im right u get stuck at experience level 8th circle. Kind of limited but a great and challenging game nonetheless and i was very anxious to play the 2nd part serpent isle because the reviews look high and its looks great. And like the other guest was probly complaining about. Its too bad that it looks up. Would that be only us two experiencing this difficulties? If not, maybe there might be some way to circumvent this problem and enjoy the game through and through. Ur comments are appreciated.

Klown Killer 16-05-2005 07:25 PM

You can play it in French, if you prefer.

It can get quite buggy, but you only have to save before going to the banquet. Sometimes, the pikemen managing the arena gets "lost" when you're entering the banquet hall.
Rest a bit and make sure it isn't evening (I chose 11.00am), then enter the hall.

Sorry, Dan, but as you could easily have gathered from earlier posts in this thread, the game is ESA-protected, so don't ask for it.

Myabe I'm just stupid, but how do you actually download these games? I used to have these games back in the day and I've been looking for a way to just get them. I thought they would be old enough to be free be now. I love this game. How do I do it?

Borodin 25-12-2005 02:43 PM

U7 is no longer available as freeware: it's ESA-protected. If you want it, you have to buy it. Check out Amazon, or eBay.

Guest 06-02-2006 02:58 PM

Good graphics but I prefer Ultima VIII. I´ve added the link, where you can download this game. Try it.
Ultima VIII has isometric-view (adventure-style).

It´s very sad but Esa don´t autorized this game to be available, because the game it is good..... :bye:

Areth 25-05-2006 12:00 PM

Probably a very newbish question. But did Origin systems get brought out or change there names? Cause I am looking at the ESA website members area and origin systems isn't on there.

Any ideas?

Mighty Midget 25-05-2006 12:14 PM

According to Wikipedia, Origin was disbanded by Electronic Arts in 2004.

Unfortunately, that seems to be (still according to WP) in EA's tradition.

Guest_jeppe93_* 30-05-2006 02:34 PM

Seriously! just because someone dos not like a game, it dosent mean they "HAVE" to share that with everyone else...

i mean come on guys! this is a forum for people that like old games, and if you by any chance dont like old games, then simply leave the forum... its just pretty annoying.

MV75 23-06-2006 06:00 AM

So we can suddenly download this for some reason now....

I want to know if a non-addon version (original serpent isle), can be made available please. I am still wanting to have a replacement for my bad floppy disk version.

Sure I have two more legitimate add-on included versions on CDs, but I'd love to have a non-add on integrated serpent isle to fill that void in my collection. Thanks.

Newbish question...I downloaded this and U7 from this site tonight (and I figured they weren't avail?). Anyhow, I simply can't get them to install on my compy. We have Windows Xp...Do I need to install in Dos? I remember in the old days when I wanted to play this I needed to create a boot disk :) etc. Can anyone help? When I try to install it I get a prompt saying that it can't find the specified file...Same happens for exult... I haven't done this in years so I need help :)

Try using DosBox for this purpose. DosBox emulates an x86 class machine complete with DOS - next best thing to the real deal.

Well, describe what you did since you got here. Did you answer correctly the copy-protection questions the monk asked you? If not, the game becomes pigish. Try downloading the manual and use it to answer them correcly.

If this still doesn't help, try beginning a new game.

Roadkill 17-07-2006 09:12 AM

Yep you have to answer the question right first time round or everyone start speaking mumbo jumbo, quite entertaining to read as it makes no sense whatsoever. You will have to restart or reload to take the questions again.

the answers should be in the manual and are relatively easy to find. Dont try guess them as it's almost impossible, youve proabably got a better chance of winning the lottery :brain:

Vaikunta 03-08-2006 09:03 PM

Random tip:

(going against Avatar-ish behaviour) Stealing is possible, stealing is easy to do, although harder than Part I. The trick is to exploit something new on the game, the possibility to call someone and it following you. To take that greedy spirit out from the room, be as far as possible and call it. When it is near, go around avoiding conversation and enter the room, press 'i' to open your inventory and close the door. Be sure nobody is in the room. Steal what you want and then unpause the game, it should flow normally and the NPC won't even suspect it.

Nore: The armoury at Monitor is "unstealable". even when deserted. When you drag a item, like a halberd for example, the inventory will close and a battle music will begin to talk. One day, a cat fond of justice came after me for trying it!

Random tip:

When you fight, you gain experience points. When you earn experience points you gain levels. When you gain levels you get training points. (I ask myself, who doesn't know that?)

My point is, if you have the Silver Seed addon, don't train the Avatar too much and train your party members before going to the icy wastes. When you see it what happends, you'll see I knew what I was saying *cough*bring warm clothes too*cough* :)

If you were as unlucky as I was, the guy who arranges fights for you will dissapear and you won't be able to train anymore (except with a trainer in Silver Seed).

Hey guys, I see that some of you have problems running Ultima VII 2 and I want to help. The best way to play it in NT based systems is Exult but, for old time lovers, there's VMware virtual machine. Problems with sound can be solved with modern drivers for DOS 6.2 (driverguide.com is a good place to start looking, it did it for me) but through www.bootdisk.com can be reached very good links with info of MS-DOS, including USB drivers and more.

Enjoy the best saga ever made!

I´m using vmdsound, and i dont get it to start.
How do I turn of ems like the following instruction says:

"make sure you TURN OFF EMS in dosbox.conf or VDM Sounds' configuration wizard."

I´m not so used with this kinda stuff...

The Fifth Horseman 07-11-2006 11:36 AM

When you are configuring the game for the first time using VDMSound, you'll have a window that says something like "to do: add more stuff here" and a button that says "Advanced" (or sth like that) in bottom right of it. Click the button and then look around the settings screen it opens. There will be memory settings there.

The Fifth Horseman 27-12-2006 03:00 PM

It seems you are trying to run the game in plain Windows. I strongly suggest you use DosBox instead.
You can download it here.

DCIntegral 28-12-2006 12:04 PM

I'm delighted to find this game after so many years.

I had to abandon playing it when my teacher found out that you could (shock horror) have 'relationships' in the game. Got caned for it, and he erased my disks.

Labelling it as obscene seemed a bit of an overreaction to me, and was very annoying given how much I'd spent on it.

Guest 28-12-2006 02:37 PM

the_fifth_horseman, I am using dosbox, I try in exult and nothing, the
same message, I think that is a problem in a file of the game, but what file? :(

The Fifth Horseman 28-12-2006 03:28 PM

Might be a corrupt archive. Did you try redownloadng?

Guest 31-12-2006 07:24 PM

yes, I try redownload the game and nothing,
the problem appears again :(

BASwitzer 07-02-2007 01:21 AM

Okay first off i LOVE this game so very very much...i remember my uncle showing me this game a long time ago but he got rid of it so i dont have it :wallbash: ....anyways...i downloaded it set ems to false but now when i try to play it says that i dont have enough expanded memory to play...i need so much and i have none...any ideas on how to fix this :sos: cause im at a lose...i have read tons of posts and guides and everything and still have no idea what to do!!!

Guest 08-02-2007 06:52 PM

@baswitzer: read carefully.
It doesnt tell you that you neet more expandet memory - it does tell you that you need to shut don the expanded memory. U7 1/2 dont run while expanded memory mamager is working. theyre incompatible.
So what you do is , you use Dosbox, or exult, both already mentionened in ths thread. I dont know about exult, for not having used it, but i had no problem running U7 on dosbox together eith the Dosbox-frontend Defend
you shoud be easyly able to manage then, just install dosbox and Defend, correlate Defend to the dosbox location (it will ask you, dont worry), and the setup a Dosbox profile for U7, in which yiu can easily deactivate EMS and XMS)

But, towards another problem:
I had u7 running in dosbox without any problems half a year earlier. I had used a Ultima7complete CD then, which was borrowed.
Well, computer go boom, Disc got geturned, now I was happy to see, that it was finally available here (how do these things happen anyway ? Esa suddenly tells "Oh, its no longer protected, guys!" ?)

But after downloading, dezipping and activating a dosbox account, in DOSbox I get the message "Illegal Command SI.exe" respectively the name of the install exe. Same thing with Black gate.
What is up? Am I the only one getting this prob?
Archive or files crappy?

I`m out of my depth here, so please help.

The Fifth Horseman 09-02-2007 07:50 AM

We've got certain agreements with them.

I'd be glad to help you if you told us the exact things you did in DosBox and any/all error messages it produced.

justaguest 09-02-2007 03:45 PM

thanx, thats easily, and for the most part already, told.

Working on a W2K OS, Sp4 installed.
I´m using Dosbox 6.2, with D-Fend v2 as a frontend.

With the Ultimas I just used my usual routine, unpacking the game files into a separate folder.

Then using D-fend to set up a program profile for Dosbox, taking all the D-fend presets, exept for the Memory managemant part, where I disabled XMS and EMS, and the Dos-memory settings, which I put up to 63MB.

Same way I did it with the CD last year, which worked fine. (though on a different hardware)

Dosbox produced no error messages at all
-
once in the Dosbox-dos screen I tried activating the .exe files, to which the response "illegal command *exe-file*"
Or spelled out: I did type in SI enter, and the DOs screen told me "illegal command SI.EXE."
that was it.
kind of like the .exe where no .exe. Remember that of the Dos-days, although theyre long gone and I was a kid by then
Redownloading didnt work.
Activating the files manually in a blank Dosbox-enviroment with deactivated EMS brought the same results.

I mean, this works fine on U6, Warcraft, Fantasygeneral an any number of other games.
*sigh*
Well, I just hoped, maybe somebody came up with the same problems and fond a way around

So, appreciate it if you got some ideas

:ok: Now that was an informative answer *g*

Greetings

The Fifth Horseman 09-02-2007 03:55 PM

Upgrade your DosBox to most recent v0.65, for starters.
Also, stop using D-Fend. I know for a fact that it can cause problems with running games where normally none occur.

Guest 09-02-2007 04:01 PM

ok, I´ll try that.

Are any other in-windows frontends for dosbox some good?
I quite liked that handling...
Ah, well.
Thank you.

The Fifth Horseman 09-02-2007 04:04 PM

I heard a bit of good about DosBoxer, but it also apparently causes some trouble.

My personal advice is that you're MUCH better off by learning to modify Dosbox.conf manually rather then continuing to use frontend software.

BASwitzer 10-02-2007 06:33 PM

it does in fact say i need more expanded memory...it says
"Serpent Isle requires 1024000 bytes of extended memory! You have 0 available."
so whats going on? :sos:

The Fifth Horseman 14-02-2007 02:28 PM

Is there a setup file in the game directory? It may have an option to disable expanded/extended memory usage.

silz 17-02-2007 04:28 AM

I have the problem too but it works fine with exult. Its a very beautiful game graphically even when this is the first time I see it.

dante 31-03-2007 07:25 PM

i finally got the game to play, i am using exult. but i cant figure out how to activate the cheats, since with exult you dont ever type in a command to start the game. do i need to change a file somewhere or something?

faeornran 31-03-2007 10:55 PM

Exult should automatically have cheats enabled. Take a quick look through some of the readme files and such. I think there's actually an option in the Exult main menu that enables and disables cheats, though I'm not sure.

Does same about me, the "EMS=false" doesn't work maybe because it worked on older computer. Exult looks usefule but it lacks of user-friendly interface which make it much too difficult to configure and i can't play any U7 in both emulators.

I have : W98 second edition
AuthenticAMD
AMDathlon™ XP 1800+

Exult doesn't need you to really configure it, just installing it correctly can have you playing it fine, what problems are you having with Exult exactly?

Jenkins 12-09-2007 08:17 PM

Well, let's give it a try. However it's going to be a long post... I thank you blood piggy, for your patience :)

1- Created exult folder for it's contents
2- Exult is told to look for U7 and serpent isle in C:/oldgames/Ultima7 and c:/oldgames/serpent
3- Launched Exult: it says "Could not find the data files for BG or SI, please edit the configuration file and restart exult
4- I opened stderr and it look like this: "Trailing slash in path: "data\"
...compensating, but go complain to Colourless anyway
Unable to open device: MMSYSTEM004 **Le périphérique spécifié est en cours d'utilisation. Attendez qu'il soit libre, puis essayez Ã* nouveau.**
Failure to initialize midi playing thread"
** translation = The specified peripheral is in use. Wait until it is free, then try again.
5- I also opened stdout and it here it does : "Exult version 1.2
Built at: Jun 12 2004 03:31:19
Compile-time options: NO_SDL_PARACHUTE, HAVE_ZIP_SUPPORT
Compiler: Microsoft C/C++ Compiler, version: 13.0.9466

Platform: Windows 98 SE Version 4.10 Build 2222

exult_bg.flx : found
Serpent Isle : not found (c:\oldgames\serpent\static\sispeech.spc)
exult_si.flx : found"

I hope this doesn't look discouraging.

Have you tried putting the game files in a folder that's easier for Exult to locate? I make totally sure that you didn't misspell anything or made a mistake while naming your folders.

Exult should be able to find the files properly, if it can't, which seems to be the problem here, it could be an error you made or Exult is acting faulty.
Also, I don't think there's supposed to be two \\ in the music section.

Jenkins 12-09-2007 08:38 PM

Oh, I have an idea!

If Exult works for you, could you show your exult.cfg ? I'll copy it in my own .cfg and putting both U7 folders exactly the same way you did. Unless there are another possibilities

Also I remove one / and it did nothing new.

Blood-Pigggy 12-09-2007 08:41 PM

I don't use Exult, I use DosBox, are you sure that wouldn't work for you?
I'd post this in troubleshooting, it's hard for people to notice these things in the game forums.

As I said before, I'm not really an expert on Exult, if DosBox doesn't have Ultima work for you for some reason, I'd be much more capable with that.

There is a chance to have Forge of Virtue and Silver Seed (ultima VII expansion)on Abandonia?

The Fifth Horseman 17-09-2007 08:49 AM

Yes, but not before 2009.

Guest 17-09-2007 04:52 PM

2009!! :crybaby:

They were published by Electronic Arts, wich gives them 15-year protection. Nothing we can do.

Old gem, played this for so long. Some tricks:

1. It is possible to cremate EVERYTHING. Tho not applicable now, it used to be a big deal cuz the savegame file can be cut down a lot, and loading is much faster.

2. It's possible to fight anyone and anything by hiding behind a wall and using a 2 handed weapon or whip. In some cases, even a one-handed weapon can work. Very useful if you're starting out, low on cash and need some dead guardsmen to cremate.

I'm a huge fan of this game and haven't played it sense I was a kid however I was wondering if anyone knew of anyway I could get this running on my 64 bit version of vista?

I can install dosbox or exult, however whenever I try to install the game itself windows says something regarding compatibility issues. Its my understanding that it runs a 16 bit installer.. which can't be run on a 64 bit computer..

Any help would be awesome, I fear I'll have to dig up old cd's and install a virtual system..

The Fifth Horseman 01-07-2009 08:11 AM

Run DOSBox. Run the game's installer in DOSBox.

_r.u.s.s. 01-07-2009 08:23 AM

you need to install the game via dosbox. that's why you downloaded it after all..

TaintedGlory 02-07-2009 04:28 AM

Heh, I thought I did. But apparently I was using dosbox wrong. Anyways I figured it out, but wouldn't have if it hadn't been for the two of you. So thank you very much :)

Regarding DOSBOX

Dosbox Technical Configuration

Version 2.0

After installing dosbox you will get a configuration file. Open that file and you will see the following commands:

cycles=auto
#( this is the default value and should work for most of the games )
cycles=9000
#( some games require a customized value in order to run satisfactorily (e.g. Master of Orion). Use this only if the first one fails )

memsize=16
#( this is the default value and should work for most games. If you are familiar with dos programs I would suggest that you customize this value )

insert the following at the most bottom of the file:

mount x c:\mydocuments\dominus
x:

# The mount command above differs from person to person depending on where you extracted the zip file to. Try not to mount as z because some XP ( or possibly Vista ) computers will produce some kind of anomaly.
# Save the file with the changes above.
# Go to where you extracted the zip file and run install.exe ( Run the file within DOSBOX. NOTE: If you are running VISTA you might encounter problems, in that case you might want to configure install.exe in an older system and then transfer the game to your VISTA PC ( Yeah I know it is a pain in the behind but I had to do it this way, unless you have a better method than mine )
# Set the following sound card configuration:

sound blaster compatible ( 100% ) or original
address 220 ( also known as 220H )
irq 5 ( also known as interrupt request 5 )
drq 1 or dma 1

# Save the changes and exit install.exe and exit DOSBOX by typing ?exit? and press return
# Run Dosbox and you should get:

x:

# Type "dir/w/p" and hit enter or return. Every dos game will have three executables, .bat or .exe or .com. Look for these files and one of these will run the game, with sound. ( For Dominus it is DOM.BAT, for STAR TRAIL it is STAR.EXE so on and so forth )
# And then press ALT + Enter to maximize the screen.

Enjoy the games and good luck.

I have img copies of the 2 silver seed disks if wanted too from my originals. LMK.

Regarding Gameplay:

I am suppose to get Water of Discipline for Gwenno but I can't gain access to the invisible chest that holds a key. The invisible chest is surrounded by walls. I have tried using Fetch, Telekinesis and Blink but to no avail. Can someone please help.

Thank you.

MV75 15-10-2011 11:34 PM

Ok, I got around to looking at the disks that are for download, disk 4 and 5 are the same one (disk4). Can this be fixed? Thanks.

jasonmloh 06-06-2012 08:57 AM
