Lizard 13-03-2005 12:26 AM

So :Why did you choose your nickname.Any stories/reasons/feelings connected with it?

Yobor 13-03-2005 12:29 AM

Well, I was joining Runescape, and most of my regular nicknames that I do by were taken. So I decided to come up with something original.
Yobor
It is like Conan, or Belit, very simple, yet sumblime.

It infers Manliness, but that is obviously not the case with me :-)

taikara 13-03-2005 12:34 AM

I'm a rather huge Wheel of Time fanatic, and when I played Sierra's Realm (back in the day), I joined a WoT guild.

I played as an Aiel, and chose the name Tai'kara Ayende Kalarin using the Old Tongue dictionary from the series.

It's been my online nick ever since (7 or so years now).

xcom freak 13-03-2005 12:35 AM

I just wanted to post once and thank the site for providing the game....
Now i got bored of the game and i am stuck with the stupid nick name :ranting:

Kon-Tiki 13-03-2005 12:39 AM

I learned 'bout Thor Heyerdahl and Kon-Tiki when mr. Heyerdahl died. Read an article 'bout it in the newspaper and it appealed to me so much I looked further into it. Also, out of respect for the voyage and out of almost obsessive interest in it, took the name over when I started out on the net. The more I learn 'bout it, the more I love the name, too :)

If you ask nicely the admins may be able to change you name.

Mine just came about. Scarecrow is usually taken, but Iron Scarecrow is never taken.

Pangloth 13-03-2005 12:56 AM

There's this wonderful trilogy ot books by an author by the name of John Brosnan. I recommend it to everyone, since it is (in my opinion) an extremely well written story about a future that can actually happen to us. It is science fiction. The books are collectively called "The Sky Lords Trilogy". Well, one of the Sky Lords is named "Pangloth".

I love those books as well! Do you know when the next one is coming out?
I hope Perrin gets Fail back!!!

taikara 13-03-2005 01:21 AM

They never come out fast enough :(

Of course he'll get her back... unless RJ just wants to be a jerk (which could very well be... sigh).

I'm more interested in Mat and the Daughter of the Nine ;)

But this is :ot:

Unfortunately :(

Yobor 13-03-2005 01:25 AM

Right.
I have a feeling that the internet is the only place where people can make their own nicknames. Other places people get nicknames by the way they act or what they have done.

taikara 13-03-2005 01:30 AM

I kind of think that in some ways, internet nicknames are more like our "real" names because of that... we choose the names that we think best represent ourselves, unlike our given names, or the nicknames our friends give us :)

Yobor 13-03-2005 01:33 AM

Good point. They are more like us than the names which are supposed to represent us, :ok:

Ioncannon 13-03-2005 01:58 AM

well when i first started using online chat was when I played CS, back then my nick was TOT_Destroy. After a long time I changed my name to Ionstorm (after the weather effect in C&C TS.) The name stook for a while but I never liked TS as much as TD. When I saw the ioncannon effect in C&C Renegade well the nick Ioncannon was born. Used it for 3 or so years now. The only other nick I have is Hans Kloss which is for WWII games like Day of Defeat or BF1942. Hans Kloss is a fictional polish spy in the WWII era...

DeathDude 13-03-2005 05:57 AM

Come to think about it, mine was just really more of a random name. It had nothing to do with a fascanation of death or anything, it just came up during some thinking of some names to use for Unreal Tournament when I was playing online, the name just stuck after awhile.

Iron_Scarecrow 13-03-2005 06:14 AM

Well I wasn't thinking about me when I decided to use this name, plus it wouldn't make me look very good if my name represented me.

Nyerguds 13-03-2005 06:37 AM

I came up with the name 'Nyerguds' for a LEGO alien I had put together. Later, when I started needing a nickname online, it turned out that nothing beats an original nick... so I used my LEGO alien's name.

I ususally also use him as avatar... Got him as profile photo now :D

Fun fact: a google search for "Nyerguds" will only give you results that are really about me :D

Eagle of Fire 13-03-2005 08:33 AM

My first nick was "Phoenix". It came from my "Phoenix BIOS" which appeared on my computer a startup.

I switched often between "Phoenix" and "Bios" for a while. When I arrived on the Internet, I needed something original to come with because both "Phoenix" and "Bios" were already very popular.

"Eagle of Fire", a derivation of "Phoenix", been created by my fertile mind. I am using this nick ever since and it's a most original name. Even today.

wormpaul 13-03-2005 09:30 AM

As some of you know...

Paul is the real name....

And this is my first and only nick name ever so im still proud of it...

But it`s simple...i played worms 2 (and worms armageddon) and i need to make a bunch of real fighters at my side..

I used the name of my friends but the captain (that`s me.. ) need to have something special...

That`s why the: WORMpaul in front of it...it sounds cool and it`s not too long to use everywhere on the internet....

But the first steps of my name were made on: www.dolfijn.nl...this great old dutch site was the place where WORMPAUL was borned...

And for now: I think he will live a long time at my side :bleh:

Lizard 13-03-2005 11:28 AM

My schoolmates gived me nickname Dinosaur, and Lizard evolved from it somehow...

Puffin 13-03-2005 11:37 AM

Puffin is my nick in real life.

It's a loooooong story, and is not for the faint of heart. Sorry!

TaloN 13-03-2005 12:01 PM

i was stoned off my face when first signign up to the forum...so i dont really remember LOL

Havell 13-03-2005 12:19 PM

My real name is Richard Havell, which I then shortened to R Havell. So ends the terribly exciting story of my nickname.

In other games and things I use the name "Trent Steele" becuase I thought of it one day and just thought it sounded cool.

Tom Henrik 13-03-2005 12:37 PM

It's my name. I don't believe in nicks.

Sebatianos 13-03-2005 12:48 PM

Old master Sebatianos it a character in a book I'm working on (actually I've writen about 30% of the story - but haven't got around to finish it - haven't writen a single letter of the story in past 6 years).
It's a made up name, that sounds like a real one. The character in the book is actaully my own voice. He's a mentor to the hero Zarbon.

When I first opened a mail account I didn't want to give my real name, because everybody had a strange nick and it was all used more or less for fun, so I decided to use this one. And wherever I go, the name Sebatianos is never taken - so...

My real name is Borut (if anyone would like to know).

BeefontheBone 13-03-2005 12:50 PM

I've had this one off and on since I first started using the 'net, on the Total Annihilation forums back in the day, when we were in the middle of the BSE crisis - I quite liked the idea of being something that could send you a bit loopy (lord knows I try!). I'm also occasionally Charlie, which was a RL nickname from college (after Charlie from Charlie's Angels) but I normally stick with Beef now.

@TH: Don't believe in nicknames? Is that like not believing in faries? You'll have TiNk3rBeLL teh l33t n1ck fa1ree after you if you're not careful.

JJXB 13-03-2005 12:57 PM

i just needed something to be known as online and i knew that "JJXB" would never be used by anyone else (altough i did use Gr8FuQ in diablo 2 :P)

peregy 13-03-2005 01:00 PM

My scoolmates give me the name peregy because my surename is Peregi.

another_guest 13-03-2005 01:16 PM

The first few times I posted here, I didn't register, thinking I wouldn't be around for too long. So then I was just another guest.
But it turned out I remembered quite a few old games. It was quite logical to take "another_guest" as nick then.

Tulac 13-03-2005 01:26 PM

Tulac was an RPG character, back from one of my pen&paper sessions...
That character was pretty odd, and I grew to like it, another plus is that
this nick is never taken, the minus is that it can associate on the word dummy or alike in Croatian...

Infact we have a guy in our class which name is Tulac.I was a bit surprised when I saw Tulac first time on this site...

Calamity 13-03-2005 02:07 PM

I've always been fascinated by the old west so it partially comes from Calamity Jane (hence why some of my friends call me Jane), and it also comes from the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller (who died recently :( ).

Dino 13-03-2005 02:08 PM

Since I was very interested in World War 2 (infact, still am), specialy keen on reading about the D-day, I choose this nick because disembarkation in Normandy was called Operation Overlord! Sounded good to me, and it remained my nick till today! Combination with small and capital letters is just a way of making it more interesting...

troop18546 13-03-2005 03:05 PM

I invented my nickname "troop18546" for a book character, which I havent finished writing yet. I also have nicknames "VI" and "VIsheevat"...

The_EgAt 14-03-2005 12:36 PM

The_EgAt....

The = Just 'The'
_ = Replacement for the space character
Eg = The first two letters in my brother's name: "Egill"
At = The first two letters in my name: "Atli"

It is used both by my brother and me, but I use it more often. When my brother uses it, it's usually just "EgAt", and when I use it, I add "The_" :D

See, I'd kind of assumed it was because your name WAS Jane.

Anyone remember Calamity James from the Beano? He used to be ace, before they put him in colour and lost all the nifty little details...

N17R0 14-03-2005 12:47 PM

I've always been a street racing addict (into the performance aspect of it though, I don't care if your car is pretty if it doesn't have at least 400hp, and since I didn't want to do just Nitro, I ended up using leet in it (hey, i was in 7th grade at the time :P). It ended catching on with all my friends so I just kept it and I use it for just about everything.

Rogue 14-03-2005 01:06 PM

In absence of creativity, I used Mythology to get my nick. Scorpio was nick I used for more then 5-6 years online, but since then a lot of other used it too, and I needed change. :)

Anubis – Egyptian god, master of underworld – leads the dead to judgment and represented as man body with jackal head.

Zachai 14-03-2005 01:43 PM

Mine came about from a story I was writing in high school. the story never never got finished but i thought the name was too cool to leave in an unfinished story so now I use it on the 'net. Occasionally, I will also go by Vontain, another name from the same story.

Fawfulhasfury 14-03-2005 01:48 PM

Well, when I decided to get a cooler nickname, I tried to think of something that I could use for every site I'd ever be on, something unique and something pertaining to funny evil genius's. The first place I looked was mario, and I loved the idea of using Fawful, the little beanbean evil genius as my nickname, but he was mostly already taken by that time. So I need to uniquify him. So I took his catchphrase, "I have fury!!!" and replaced the I with Fawful, pushed the words together, and capitalized the F, and thats where I got Fawfulhasfury at. And I've used that as my nick online ever since, before that my online nick at places was little jim. I just needed it to be better to me I guess. And it does suit me.

Rogue 14-03-2005 01:53 PM

More suitable would be: FawfulhasNOfury or FawfulLOSTfury! LOL LOL LOL

Fruit Pie Jones 14-03-2005 02:44 PM

My nick originated in an e-mail discussion with friends about the irresistible allure of those horribly unhealthy (but oh-so-tasty) fruit pies often found in vending machines, convenience stores, and other four-star dining establishments. They're about as nutritious as sugar-coated lard, but I love 'em anyway. Fortunately, I've avoided turning into a 400-pound pile o' goo ... so far.

"Fruit Pie Jones" also sounds like the name of an old-time blues musician, which would probably make for a more interesting backstory, but it would be a complete lie.

Classic Pig 15-03-2005 09:18 AM

The first LAN game I went to I was competeing against a frien who was known by the nick "Bushman". Being a very creative person I decided to rip that off and became Bushpig. And thus the reason for the pig bit - classic bit came from the fact the this is a classic gaming forum and site (I think...)

Simple...

The Fifth Horseman 15-03-2005 09:46 AM

Been assembling a lance of Battletech mechs dubbed "The Four Horsemen", after The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Meanwhile, I needed a name for my e-mail account.

(gears spinning)

And I came up with The Fifth Horseman. As I had to replace spaces with underslashes (_), it changed to the_fifth_horseman. I liked it and so it stuck. Pretty unique too - so far I found only one or two people using that nickname at all. :ok:

This also has a good advantage of many derivatives - fifth_horseman, fifthhorseman, tfh, t5h etc, all of which can be used if a short nick is needed,

marko river 15-03-2005 10:03 AM

Well, my name is marko. Hmmm, what can i say? Don't ever bother about the meaning of life.

Reup 15-03-2005 11:40 AM

During my rowing days, I developed a certain style of oar-handling that here in the Netherlands is called "reupen", it's a verb (to reup). This is not the best way to transfer your power to the water... My crew started calling me 'Reup' after a while (especially since our choaches kept whining about my style...

I must add, that despite my flaws we did win quite a lot of races and we still hold our club record (since 1999) :ok:

TheSmyth 15-03-2005 02:48 PM

After years using made up names e.g. "Cleaver (/2000)" now all grown up and comfortable with who i am. It's practically my real name. Onky the speeling is different, cause there's already quite a few Smiths in the world, amazingly! :w00t:

Rosella_Daventry 16-03-2005 01:33 PM

I think mine is pretty much self explanitory. Well, unless you haven't played the Kings Quest series.

And if you haven't, you should. :max:

One of my original screen names was Hybrid. That mutated to Hy, and then branched off into Highonbread or Hyonbread, depending on what I feel like for an account.

Iron_Scarecrow 17-03-2005 03:56 AM

During the month or two that I played Counter Strike online through Cogs I was using the name LaggQueen, because someone was using LaggKing and I was always following him stabbing him with my knife even though he was on my team.

Sinther 17-03-2005 04:58 AM

My nick is out of a book, is a SF..."Foundation and chaos" but in the book the caracter's name was without "h" and the image show's my obsesion for the game TIE Fighter :max:

Marek 17-03-2005 06:23 AM

The bad guys name was Marek and I think he was the coolest bad guy in any move ever!!!

Sly 17-03-2005 12:01 PM

So I chose "Sly", the character from "Deathtrack" :)

I am really lovin' this site! You guys rock!

Danny252 18-03-2005 05:55 PM

Danny, as me name is Daniel, and 252 as I like 2 and 5! and 2 again... I consider 252 lucky! so, thats Dannytwofivetwo

Doc Adrian 04-06-2005 10:18 PM

Doc Adrian is just the shortened version of my penname I used in college when I used to write. Most people don't call me Doc at work or anything special like that. My nicknames are generally unprintable in this family based forum :)

Playbahnosh 04-06-2005 10:40 PM

I told this in another thread, so I just CRTL+C CRTL+V it here:

Quote:

Playbahnosh is a rather modified (made to sound English* :D ) version of the Hungarian word "plébános" wich means parson (a kind of priest). The spelling of these words are almost similar in Hungarian, so many people around here laughs at it* . I think I chose this becouse I like to help people where I can. It's just me.

Spookyfish 04-06-2005 11:04 PM

My nick comes from my stepbrother, not the infamous South Park-episode :D. He kept saying, "Spooky" whenever some laughably lame attempt of a scary scene occoured while he played Resident Evil 3. Then when we saw the movie "Dagon" togeher, he kept saying, "Spooky", and I would add, "Fish", as the scary element in Dagon is fish-people. Spooky-fish. I ended up using it all over :D.

252 is the first 3 numbers in the phonenumbers in a place called Brits. It is somewhere in South Africa. Eg. 2524786.
Are u from Brits? :karate:

P.S. The First time I used my nick name was in "Death Rally" 'bout 2.5 years back. I was watching "The X Files" at the time. I guess it just happened to stick in my head. :eeeeeh: (Hence the Alien smilie)

omg 05-06-2005 12:43 AM

Doubler 05-06-2005 10:09 AM

Well, my first and last name both start with an R, so someone once called me Double R, and that evolved further into the thingy you've all come to love ( ): Doubler.

PrejudiceSucks 05-06-2005 10:20 AM

Urmmm.... mine because I absolutely hate prejudice. The one time when I have EVER punched someone in the the face is because they made a stupendously offensive comment about a black footballer.

My old online name used to be Skunk_Hoover, but the gimmick wore off after a while. Plus I discovered a lot of prejudice on the internet.

Which is why for a couple of months I posed as someone female to see the reactions I got for it. On some forums I got nought but flaming, but you people are really cool. So thank you for that.

Data 05-06-2005 10:32 AM

http://www.abandonia.com/~data/ has an explaination of my nickname

PrejudiceSucks 05-06-2005 10:41 AM

Well that was simple yet clever. Have a gold star!

Data 05-06-2005 10:43 AM

wOOt ;)

Edit: Were all things this simple *sigh*

Iron_Scarecrow 05-06-2005 10:50 AM

There's a really good by Strung Out called Scarecrow. And I just like the sound of it, but it's usually taken and when I made my email address it gave me a list of things I could put in front of Scarecrow and one of them was Iron_Scarecrow, and so I been using it ever since. It's great because it's never taken.

And coincidentally the main character of three Matthew Reilly books has the nickname Scarecrow and they are some of my favourite books. And the scarecrow in Bob the Builder is just so cool, and that song:

I'm a jingle jangle scarecrow
With a flippy floppy hat
I can shake my hands like this
And shake my feet like that

Quintopotere 05-06-2005 11:28 AM

There are many reasons for my nickname... and i'll tell you one of these:

There is a book of Jeffrey Archer called "The Fourth Estate" talking about the power of the mass-media inspirated by a quote of E. Burke who said (in the second mid of 1700): "there were three Estates in Parliament, but in the Reporters Gallery yonder, there sat a fourth Estate more important far than they all"

So i think that I (and everyone) should be the fifth estate (quinto potere in italian)!
All our minds shouldn't be controlled by the four estates!
I'm not anarchic, i want only that all you will think with your mind...

And even in italian Quintopotere sounds very cool :max:

Chuck the plant 05-06-2005 01:02 PM

My first post here was on the "Maniac Mansion"-board... go figure

And I usually create a fitting name for every comunity I join...

Kearnsy 05-06-2005 01:58 PM

Well mine is as simple as it comes... last name + y = kearnsy!!

@Danny252:
I consider 227 to be lucky (dont know why though.)

Mahar Vairo 05-06-2005 02:06 PM

227?

Wasn't that a TV comedy a long time?

Kearnsy 05-06-2005 02:45 PM

Could have been.

I really dont know where i got the number from but I been using it for many a year now.

troop18546 05-06-2005 02:50 PM

I planed to create a book about one of my fav games and I was stuck with creating a name for the main character. Hmm, I thought, troop what? Troop18546.
Plus it's so damned simple to remember and it was a random pick and it's very easy to type.

Argith Nuei 05-06-2005 03:01 PM

Well I was listening to Underworld when I decided to become a abandonia forum member and Spoonman was playing, so it just made sense to me at that time :) Co?ncidentily Spoon! is the battle cry of The Tick.

PrejudiceSucks 06-06-2005 06:32 PM

Cool. Good idea for a nick, yours all same way more inspired than mine!

parska 06-06-2005 10:22 PM

Parska is my nick in real life.

TheGiantMidgit 06-06-2005 10:36 PM

Oxymorons and misspellings always instill humour in me.

Iron_Scarecrow 07-06-2005 06:38 AM

Like hurry up and wait?

A. J. Raffles 07-06-2005 06:40 AM

Or 'save rags and waste paper'? No wait, that's not an oxymoron at all, is it?

Iron_Scarecrow 07-06-2005 06:44 AM

I know a clever idiot.

He does a running walk.

BeefontheBone 07-06-2005 10:00 AM

Is it John Cleese? He's a clever idiot with a funny walk.

Nick 07-06-2005 10:05 AM

I was thinking a lot about nickname that I should choose long time ago and couldn't invent any. But one day I realized, that my nickname is hidden in my real name. Nickolay - Nick. :max:

Indignus IV 07-06-2005 01:17 PM

Nick, you are the most creative person I have ever met. </sarcastic>

My name I chose on a whim. Weird words pop into my head all day long. So, when I was on Abandonia one day (as a guest, not a member) I said "Indignus IV! Thats awesome, I better become a member so I put it into effect!" :w00t:

VERTICAL PIG 07-06-2005 01:57 PM

ha ha! Everyones name is so interesting, kool and dam funny. what a great topic!

i will leave mine to speculation

TheChosen 07-06-2005 02:18 PM

I chose my name because of two reasons:

1.Im a big fan of fallout
2.Ive always wanted to be a chosen hero, who will save the universe.

I also have another nickname: Sir Jesse

Rogue 07-06-2005 02:30 PM

You should use Fallout avatar too... :D

t0mme 08-06-2005 05:49 AM

Well, my real name is Tom. Me being a Drenth (a Dutch province) I liked a local band very much (Skik) who came with a song called "Tomme". In Drenths, tomme means goddammit. My first contact with the net was during my wasted years (teen) so goddammit seemed like a perfect nick. Offcourse I had to spice it up, so I replaced the o with a 0 and dropped the capital T.
Later my Frisian girlfriend pointed out that "tomme" means "little thumb" in Frisian... :eeeeeh:

Iron_Scarecrow 08-06-2005 10:58 AM

Yay for l33t. LOL

Ever since that bragging topic I've been obsessed with it, and I used to hate it.

Your nick is Nick. Thats funny LOL . Get it?

Grinder 08-06-2005 03:14 PM

I actually have two nicknames:
1: Grinder (sometimes CodeGrinder) because that is a character from a book
who is a hacker (i like pcs) and is very small (like me)
2: LhX because there once was a game called LHX Attack Chopper. Not that i liked
the game, i just liked the helicopter...

PrejudiceSucks 08-06-2005 03:16 PM

(replies a week later) no :ok:

Sebatianos 16-06-2005 03:48 AM

Then I guess it's because the lack of inspiration that would let you have a different nick!

DakaSha 16-06-2005 03:49 AM

search the web for DakaSha and youll find me :D

been using this nick for awhile for everything.

I started writing a fantasy "novel" (yeah right i was 17 and got to the 5th page)
anyways DakaSha was the father of the main character. the uppercase "S" is because Sha is like the last name or whatever(and i guess it looks cooler :max: )

on my towns forum (which i have been legaly banned from..meaning that if i visit the site i can be charged with tresspassing...no sh**) I called myself:

"DakaSha - Herrscher der 5 Sonnen, Acolyt des WOOT!es, Formgeber des Seins"

meaning

"DakaSha - Ruler of the 5 Suns, Acolyte of WOOT!, "Creator"(cant think of a better word) of Reality as we know it"

I started that crap because i did it once as a joke and one of stupid girls there actually thought i was a cultist leader... i couldnt believe it so i just kept on doing it... half of the forum loved me... the other half despised me...

uuuuhhh...yeah...anyways.... *tapdance*
