I realize a lot of the games today are cross genre, but IF you had to chose a "pure" one of the above which one would it be?

Lizard 01-04-2005 02:42 PM

Strategy or Rpg.The best is Strategy with RPG elements or RPG with strategy elements. :D
I choosed strategy but it was so so....

I chose adventure. The best in my opinion is adventure rpg like Fallout. But I guess that if Fallout had to be put in one genre it would be rpg. But what drew me into gaming was playing adventure game...

DeathDude 01-04-2005 02:48 PM

I'd probably choose adventure for me, one of my favourite genres I like playing, especially some of the oldies, although I'm a big action fan as well.

peregy 01-04-2005 02:56 PM

Adventure, action and RPG but i chose adventure

Zarkumo 01-04-2005 03:00 PM

It just had to be "other".

I'm obviously not the only one, but I love to be surprised, to see genres mixed, to see something new, so... I like the stuff that doesn't fit in.

Chuck the plant 01-04-2005 03:03 PM

I went for adventures... much other stuff I love, too... but adventures were my "first love" (playing Maniac Mansion on a C64  )...

Still GTA rocks :D

Yeah.
Games that are other are mostly just genial or crap. Unfortunetly there is only few genial ones there....

Sebatianos 01-04-2005 04:56 PM

I saw you mentioned The Settlers of Katan. I got this game, but haven't played it yet (got it a while back, but hadn't the time for it). Is it any good? I'm considering an uploda, but I'd really like somebody else to review it...

Oh BTW - I chose Adventures

Calamity 01-04-2005 05:08 PM

Adventure all the way. Sure I do adore plenty of FPSes and platformer titles of the old school but my heart will always belong to the point and click genre. <3

Reup 01-04-2005 06:06 PM

Had to pick between action (because Doom and Halflife rock) and adventure, but decided to calculate the hours I spent with each genre and this tipped the scales towards adventure games big-time. I still blame LucasArts and Sierra for me having to do second year in high school twice !!! motherf**kers :P

Actually I've never played it, but I've never read anything but good stuff about it. At least the real board game (don't know about the computer game).

BlackMageJawa 01-04-2005 07:07 PM

Definitely Adventure. Point & Click for preference, but even games that desperately want to be P&Cs but had a god-awful control scheme forced onto them just to please the cerebrally challenged wave of new gamers (MI4, Grim Fandango) get a thumbs up from me.

Tulac 01-04-2005 07:11 PM

RPG- not for the ones set for an example though...
Adventure are great, but it's such a disgusting feeling when you get stuck in them, that I lose any will to play...

xcom freak 01-04-2005 07:32 PM

Rpg but i think the examples u gave doesnt really reflect good RPG games...

Stroggy 01-04-2005 07:55 PM

I REALLY like strategy games, however I chose adventure games since I just can't get enough of adventuregames. I think i've played all well known good adventuregames and even some that weren't so good, just because I like them so much. In fact I can't wait to buy Still Life or Moment of Silence

UnHoly 01-04-2005 08:13 PM

It's very hard to choose, I love adventures and action games. But I think adventures are a bit better than action, I could play them for hours without any break, which doesn't often happen with action games. BTW, almost everybody here chose adventures. Bit strange. isn't it? :D

It's amazing that there isn't a one vote to sports, what is great.
And on the other hand the people that play sports as favourite games usually don't know how to use internet and computer very well.
Ahhh... this was a stupid post... :eeeeeh:

Sean 02-04-2005 12:44 AM

I voted other as i like tactical shooters such as Rainbow Six =D not mindless fps's like HL2

rabadi 02-04-2005 01:07 AM

I'll go with other. A mix of Adventure, Action, and RPG if possible.

Technically all that leaves you is an RPG...

Mine would be Other, but only because I play far too many games to care which genre they are.

Unknown Hero 02-04-2005 01:49 AM

The result was obvious, and I knew it even before I voted - Adventure

In that case, let me change it into a mix of Adventure and Action only. RPG is fine, but I am still much of a newbie in this genre. So far I have only played a few RPG, and they are all lite RPG (with emphasize on "lite"). I don't want too many statistics. I am terrible with numbers

Iron_Scarecrow 02-04-2005 06:04 AM

Well I chose Action, I'm the first, only because of the games that were listed there. The only action games I care for are FPS and since Doom and Half-Life were listed there I assumed it involved FPS and since I'd rather play an FPS game over an adventure I chose it.

dwarfo 02-04-2005 06:17 AM

Its very hard to think about it, i think its in me the same STRATEGY ALSO RPG ALSO ADVENTURES, you should give there that we can point min. 2 things :ot: :max:

Charmed 02-04-2005 12:56 PM

Adventure without a doubt.

Almost all of the most memorable characters, stories and humour, come from adventure games.

Aah - to only feel again what I felt after completing the likes of Broken Sword, Grim Fandango, Zork Grand Inquisitor, The Longest Journey and Gabriel Knight. When I completed these games, it felt like someone had just died for me - I was empty inside.

No other games touch me like adventures.

I wanted to cry after completing The Longest Journey - I couldn't believe it was the end.

Adventures are my escape from life's misery.

Oh where are the adventures now ....

Nope, only one :D I'm having second thougths about "other" as well as some people might misinterpret it. By "other" I meant some other genre that I had missed, not some cross genre... but it's to late now, I can't change it.

feminista 09-04-2005 07:51 PM

Hmmm. My favorite genre is by far the eastern-style RPG. I can't stand western-style PC RPGs, but I really love my japanese-style console RPGs (Seiken Densetsu games, Final Fantasy games, Xenogears, etc). That probably comes from my being primarily a console gamer for all my life. The only PC games that I play are adventures, which I also love.

There's only one other genre that could be considered one of my favorites, and only because it contains one of my favorite games. That genre would be the questionably named "action/adventure". They do seem somewhat like adventure games, in the exploration and depth of story, but they have a very different feel to them. Such games would be those like Beyond Good and Evil, Primal, and Ico.

Yobor 09-04-2005 07:53 PM

BeefontheBone 09-04-2005 08:54 PM

Settlers of Katan is apparently very good, but probably one of those needlessly-complicated boardgames like Games Workshop used to make (Sauron anyone? man that was ridiculous). I voted strategy, but only because I'm playing Total Annihilation - it would usually be Action methinks.

Lizard - when you say "genial" do you mean "really good"? because genial in english means "likeable and friendly" or "of or pertaining to the chin" (apparently). I've seen people use it like you do before - is it some sort of mistranslation?

Lizard 10-04-2005 02:34 PM

Only adventures I played were funny ones(Discworld,Monkey Islands,Sam and Max....etc...) or creepy ones(Sanatorium,Blackstone chronicles,Darkseed,5 and 7 days a stranger/sceptic...) and Legends of Kyrandia(just becouse there was Slovak translation....)
I like adventures, but I really dont see a reason why they should be superme to RPG or strategy....

I'm both surprised and pleased to see how the majority of the votes are for adventure. Makes me depressed when I read or hear about adventure being a "dying genre" . I like to think it's a phase and one day ppl will realise how amazing it is to really use your little grey cells to explore fantastic stories

DeathDude 10-04-2005 04:21 PM

It is indeed sad to see that many developers and publishers are saying that the adventure genre is dying, and that if they were to put out an adventure game, they worry they wont' be able to make a profit, with the rising costs of making games now a days, it's understandable, one game could essentially make or break your company, but still it would be nice to see some publishers and developers take a chance and put something out.

Well said, brother..

I knew that that the days of the adventure gaming will come back.

First Person Shooter: You play one, you play all. The only difference from one game to another is graphics. Plot almost the same, damn monsters almost the same.

Strategy: You play one, you play all. The only difference you will find is the commodity or business/trade. The best I ever played and still play in my office is "The Patrician" and the first "Age of Empire." rest of them sux. The Sims LITERALLY sux, too.

Role-Playing: Its adventure in a medieval setting with a weak stat to buildup and a shining armour to buff.

Puzzle: Must be second best genre to all adventure gamers out there. This will help them practice their puzzle solving skills.

Simulation: hmm, sure this is gaming?

EDIT:

I know that most of the dudes out there do warez, so my request is that atleast we must not do that with adventure games. Buy them even if you have to steal the money from you dad's wallet or get it by stealing your neighbour's spare wheel. Let the moneygrubbers know that we do warez because we don't like the genres they want us to play.

Veloxi 12-04-2005 05:37 AM

I liked freelancer very much

Hark 13-04-2005 09:33 PM

I'm a replay fanatic. Just love to blow the dust off those ancient games and play them again. That's why I choose strategy. To me their the most replayable of the genres. There's always some new strategy to try, or a diferent way to win. Right now I'm playing Capitalism II and I'm discovering alot of new thigs about the game.

But adventure would be my second choice. I always crack up playing Monkey Island again. The sword/cursing duel is to me one of the best scenes in any adventure game.

Freelancer is okay (better with mods). It's less of a space sim and more of an RPG in which your character is actually the ship, complete with health kits (nanobots) and mane potions (shield batteries).

punch999 14-04-2005 01:50 AM

action is my favorite by far its not like i dont play it but i love playing kids in school at doom 2 using zdaemon its so fun

hanut 14-04-2005 06:43 AM

All genre are exciting but the fact that my all time fav games are listed under adventure makes me vote for adventure games. They are just so darn cool! (remember fighting Lechuk in ur huge monkey????)

MasterGrazzt 14-04-2005 03:26 PM

I don't know. On one hand, I'm a pen and paper RPG (like D&D) freak, so it should be RPG without question. Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, Lands of Lore, all the Gold Box games (such as Pool of Radience, Pools of Darkness, etc), Might and Magic, Wizardry, Ultima, Dark Heart of Uurkul, Betrayal at Krondor, Dungeon Master, MegaTraveller, the Buck Rogers games, Rogue aand the Roguelikes, and Eye of the Beholder are probably some of the best games ever made.

However, I was raised on adventure, and love it, especially all the Quest games, Gabriel Knight, Leisure Suit Larry, Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Infocom text adventures, Legend's games like Mission Critical, Gateway and Shannara, and even more, my two favourite genres cross in Quest for Glory.

And then, it's even more complicated by my love for strategy games such as Master of Orion, Civilization, Master of Magic, Age of Wonders, MechCommander, Dawn of War and Koei's games, like Celtic Tales.

But then it's even more complicated by classic, not braindead action games like the original Unreal, Wings of Fury, Moonstone, Gods, First Samurai, Turrican, Prince of Persia, Karateka...

And what about the crazy, incredible cross-genre games, like StarFlight, Pirates!, StarControl, and Sword of the Samurai?

Of course, I love a good puzzle or trivia game now and then, like Tetris, Redhook's Revenge, Lexi-Cross, and Dr. Brain.

So I guess you could say that I love all games. :D

GraveDigger, insulting other genres of games to make your point is a very weak and petty tactic indeed. Okay, you're probably bitter about adventure games being pushed out of the "limelight" so to speak, and feel that they deserve to be an institution again (and I agree with you) but isn't there a better way to get that across?

Oh, and whoever said that Settlers of Catan is overly complex (sorry, I think it was DeathDude, but I'm very lazy :bleh:) well, jeez. It's pretty simple to me. I hope you never run into the pen and paper RPGs Rolemaster and Traveller! Rolemaster is an undecipherable mess of charts and tables that you have to refer to when your character sneezes or adjusts his clothes, and Traveller, despite being incredibly fun, has VECTOR MATH as a component of it's space travel.

BeefontheBone 14-04-2005 03:34 PM

well that makes sense - vector maths is very important in space travel.

I've never actually played SoC but it seemed a bit complicated - if not I apologise for slagging it off.

A. J. Raffles 14-04-2005 04:50 PM

Definitely adventure, because that's the only sort of games I ever was any good at (with a few notable exceptions).

Nah - not registered yet, but I've been lurking since I joined here and followed BD's banner - I'd been vaguely looking for the Mordor I remembered from '95 for a while.

hmm, a bit OT, but I suppose Roguelikes and dungeon crawls should be represented here somewhere. Ever played ZangbandTK? Amazing ASCII-based (though now with some graphics) Roguelike; very addictive.

Znott 19-04-2005 02:46 PM

Strategy, Warcraft 2 :D .

Fawfulhasfury 20-04-2005 01:25 AM

Adventures definitely. My favorite adventure is Monkey Island 3.

joelster 20-04-2005 01:43 AM

ACTION, it's the best at everything :tomato: . movies, games, cartoons. Just can't beat it :ok: , especially those good ol' 70's kung-fu movies  , they are the bomb.

Bergur 20-04-2005 03:02 AM

Adventure games rule if i had a second choice i would choose rpg or shooter but thats beside the point for rpg u could have added better examples such as pokemon( u have to admitt it is one of the best rpgs ever created ), and or Final fantasy

Marek 20-04-2005 05:06 AM

Strategy,
Hands down, every time!! :ok:

Leonhart 20-04-2005 08:01 AM

I grew up playing RPGs.....
Props to the final fantasy series!

Onimaru 20-04-2005 04:58 PM

same here!!! :Titan: But i also like strategy games and Action, Adventure but i have to go with RPG although im more of an MMORPG gamer now (damn they're so addictive)

Leonhart 21-04-2005 09:22 AM

Yeah... Korean MMORPGs rule!

Thought I was the only one *sigh*

I'm both surprised and pleased to see how the majority of the votes are for adventure. Makes me depressed when I read or hear about adventure being a "dying genre" . I like to think it's a phase and one day ppl will realise how amazing it is to really use your little grey cells to explore fantastic stories[/b][/quote]

I tried the same poll here, but adventure games doesn't seem to be as popular there as it is here. Probably because most of us here are nostalgics :max:

RPG. I love them.

MdaG 27-05-2005 09:59 AM

I've been buying up CD-versions of all my favorite adventure games I used to play when I was younger +some that I missed. So far I've gotten:

Kyrandia 1, 2 & 3
Broken Sword 1, 2 & 3
Gabriel Knight 1, 2 & 3
Simon the Sorcerer 1, 2 & 3D
Discworld 1, 2 & Noir
Myst 1, 2 & 3
Syberia 1 & 2
Star Trek - 25th Anniversary
Star Trek - Judgement Rites
Longest Journey
Grim Fandango
The Dig
Day of the Tentacle
Sam and Max
The Feeble Files
The Quivering

I'm still looking for Runaway, Monkey 1, 2 & 3, Bioforge and Neverhood. I'll wait until after summer with those though.

It was Abandonia that made me realize how much fun I used to have with these kinds of games. Thanks Abandonia.

All in all I've spent ?200 (including shipping costs), which isn't that much considering what I've gotten ;-)
The reason I've had to collect them all again was that I was dumb enough to sell them once... :ranting:

Adventure with Strategy a close second

Sauvastika 30-05-2005 01:00 AM

Strategy, I'm still playing StarCraft after 4 years, and Alpha Centauri, if I didn't lose the disc.

Second would be RPG. But my favorites are mainly on the consoles, and I have a nasty habit of taking a long, long break from the game right near the end or in the beginning, before the story picks up.

lethe 30-05-2005 01:57 AM

I don't like the adventure/RPG style that you have to do certain things in order to achieve your goal, just as in real life... I don't like the feeling of having a traced destiny right at start. Not to mention it's overly boring to repeat it all over after you finish it.

So it's strategy for me... I fancy online RPG's as well.

MdaG 28-06-2005 10:15 AM

Finished Still Life. It was a good game, a little short though. I don't like how Microids' games tend to be less "interactive" than older adventure games. It's mostly nice settings, but youcan't examine the objects in your inventory or take a closer look at that tree (getting a verbal description from the main character). Syberia suffers from the same thing as does Post Mortem. :not_ok:

Sameeralord 28-06-2005 10:54 AM

I choose adventure games. Monkeyislands and indiana jones series are really great. I have heard that Gabriel Knight is a great adventure game. Is it good?

Frodo 28-06-2005 11:09 AM

I voted for Adventure.

I love all the Quest games - King's Quest, Space Quest etc.

The Monkey Island games are just classic's. :max:

Astral 28-06-2005 11:14 AM

I've only played the third game, but I own the forst and second also. When I get around to it I'll play through them since the third game is superb. Jane Jensen is an amazing writer.

moogle 28-06-2005 07:34 PM

I feel sorry for the one guy who voted for arcade...even tho bubble bobble is adicting..... ....Action for me, advenure is good also, but a lot of what people seem to stress about it is the point and click games, which reminds me of myst...which remind me of puzzle games..... ...not other good one like Alone in the Dark,Grim Fandango, that kind of stuff. RPG is also good...but in the end, I do more of First Person Shooters than anything else I guess.

MdaG 13-07-2005 01:16 PM

Arcade is in my opinion only fun in multiplayer mode. But I think it's probably the most boring genre of them all, even sport games are more fun... :tomato:

Lonely Vazdru 14-07-2005 04:48 AM

Jimbo the Legend 16-07-2005 11:23 AM

Strategy all the way.
Starcraft still the best game ever!!!!!

J

MdaG 21-07-2005 09:25 PM

I admit that StarCraft was a very well made game with and original story (at least to me it was). I like how they managed to balance the three sides. Unfortunately you have to be really fast to win (*rushing*) in it and I don't like that in a "strategy" game.

Jimbo the Legend 22-07-2005 02:15 AM

you didnt have to be that fast, its only like that now slightly because most of the people who play on batle.net have been playin the game for years so know exactly how to build quickly. most of the time these days i play ums maps which can be absolutely anything. starcraft has one of the best (imo) scenario editors that has ever been released. i havent got a clue how to use it properly but there are maps out there that can do just about anything!! fancy a bit of diablo 2 rpg on starcraft anyone? :)

J

MdaG 27-07-2005 09:00 PM

I prefer the old Command and Conquer which had more emphasis on resource gathering. In C&C it wasn't that easy to just build a new base since a new construction yard was REALLY expensive. Not to mention buildning the defense for the new base. Gathering Tiberium became more of a escort mission. In the *Craft games I've found that resource gathering hasn't been that hard. Then again I doubt I've seen all the scenarios.

Xikarita 27-07-2005 10:14 PM

Good ol' RPG...has any of you ever wished to be an all-powerful wizard? Ah, well.

plague 28-07-2005 08:09 AM

Stragedy or RPG. I'll voted for stragedy because I have been playing stragedy games a bit longer than RPG's

Decalies 28-07-2005 09:22 AM

I voted for RPG, with Fallout and Planescape as favorites. I do like stragedy, like the CIV series. I never really liked RTS. But adventure games and simulations like the SIM series I also enjoy greatly.

Abi79 29-07-2005 07:53 AM

I voted for simulation. I like strategy games also, but only a few games are good. For me a strategy game must be balanced and realistic (not the story or the units. I mean that in it you should not win when you do a rush with only a few units (e.g Starcraft) and that the A.I. shouldn't send the same units again and again and again ). Earth 2150 Escape From the Blue Planet and The Moon Project were the only strategy games that I really liked.

As for simulation games, my favorites are X-Wing, Wing Commander, F-22 ADF and  F-22 Total Air War

DxRxIx 31-07-2005 12:51 AM

My vote goes to RPG. Some of them still lives in my comp thanx to emulation, like old NES FF's, Phantasy star from Master System (the oldest ones I remember playing :D ), later on PC, with The immortal and Diablo (but these have some adventure feel, not 100% RPG. Just my opinion...).
Since I've played more RPG's than another genre, this is my choice this time (if I'd choose another, I'd consider Doom and Quake series for sure :rifle:)

C u around.

Sniffles 01-08-2005 10:18 AM

I voted Simulation. This is not my fav' genre but I really can't play well then again I love trying to.

I would be sitting in a dark room playing the 1st level of some really poor game and it wouldn't bother me to be honest!

geron 01-08-2005 11:50 PM

:Titan: I love RPG. It's my favorite genre. My favorites are games like Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale based on the d20 system (Dungeons and Dragons). Or Dungeon Master. . .

Speaking of the *Craft games. Has anyone tried Dark Oberon? It's a *Craft clone where the models and all are made out clay. The link is on the master list at AR (check my sig).

Mats 21-08-2005 09:17 PM

I had to chose stategy. I'M SO SORRY BALDURS GATE!!! (the next day Minsc and Boo knocks on my door carrying one big sharp axe)

Seriously, strategy is one great gaming genre, and the classics generally lives on in a more glorified way than most other game genres.

When will they invent the perfect game? with all the genres! that would be something! i have choose rpgs i saw the name lands of lore...could miss that

Rinforzando 23-08-2005 12:19 PM

I voted for adventure. But personally, my perfect game would be some sort of first-person 3D roleplaying action adventure. It would have to have a wide and fully explorable landscape, have multiple non-linear storylines, and be infinitely replayable. :D But somehow, I don't think it's going to happen.

That's exactly why C&C wasn't that awesome and mind bending.
Oh, Starcraft doesn't really have rushing anymore due to patches, but with C&C it was always Tank Rush.

First person to tank Rush wins!

I always fancy myself a good RPG over anything.

MdaG 20-09-2005 02:04 PM

Too all RPG lovers out there. Try out the old time RPGs like ADOM, ToME, Nethack and Zangband. I've spent hours recently and they're REALLY good. Now I know where Diablo got it's concept from. Diablo is Nethack, but with graphics and a lot less realism.

Bobbin Threadbare 20-09-2005 02:22 PM

ADVENTURE IS ABOVE EVERYTHING
It got 40 votes! :) Now my life is meaningful again. :P

ReamusLQ 20-09-2005 02:39 PM

it makes me smile to see that there are still many people out there that enjoy adventure games ^_^

THEEVILOFMEN 20-09-2005 04:31 PM

For me, it is mostly RPG that rules, though Strategy is a VERY close second. I love almost all games from both genres.

At the bottom of my list is sports. I'd rather go play them myself then play a sports game. The exception there is a game called Crush Deluxe, though that is a strategy game really.

That's what I liked about C&C. It was possible to turn the tide of battle by doing sabotage missions. One had to make sure the base was inpenetrable and that no one got to one's harvesters. That was exciting and fun. Strategy.

SwampThing 28-09-2005 06:46 PM

I think it would be a tie between Adventure & RPG. :ok:

Ever since I saw (and played) the first versions of Larry, SQ, KQ, Monkey Island, Mean Streets & Martian Memorandum etc. - I've been hooked.

Eye of the beholder, Lands of Lore, Might & Magic, Heroes of Might & magic...etc...

...not that there is anything wrong with Wolfenstein3D or Lost Vikings or Syndicate or Gobliins...etc...

B)

Mr Miau 28-09-2005 06:51 PM

I voted for Adventures, but it could be RPG as well.

Kearnsy 29-09-2005 04:06 AM

I like action games but Rpg and strategy games are hard to go past for their replayablity and often multiplayer

MdaG 17-10-2005 07:47 PM

I just finished Syberia. It has one of the most beautiful locations I've ever seen in a 3:rd person adventure and definately the most refreshing story line I've experienced in a game. :ok:

But they're worth your time, especially since now they go for 10-20 bucks.

I believe there is no game that will allow you that kind of liberty like RPG's give you..everything else is just a game....in RPG's you can really indentify yourself with your character..

Nikson 19-10-2005 11:02 AM

That only applies to free-form RPGs like Morrowind and the like. Linear RPGs, such as Diablo, focus a lot more on pushing the story forward and, implicitly, pushing the hero towards the next goal.
Not too much freedom there.

By the way, about that last statement. My life doesn't revolve around adventure games. It doesn't revolve around playing games at all. It's a part time hobby, nothing else. It makes me wonder, does YOUR life revolve around playing action games?

skittles04 20-10-2005 07:09 AM

hmmmmmmmmmmm let me see im more of a real time war game freak then any thing els but i also do enjoy good rpgs like d&d now and then . i would like to see a softwear company do a cross between real time war games and rpg ... kida like C&C meets D&D. u could choose wich view u wanted and u could walk round the base u have set up and even get shot at by the enemy .... hell if u wanted u could even lead the attack by stepin into oh say a mammoth tank or a stealth tank or even fly an orca or an apchie or a10warthog ... now i think that would be pretty fresh ....

Tito 26-10-2005 08:44 PM

A mix between RPG and strategy could be nice, but I guess it would also be quite difficult to get a good balance of those genres. Would it be something like Giants: Citizen Kabuto but with more character development and less focusing in action, or like Blood&Magic with the possibility of teking part in the action as a FPS? Well, sure there is a way, but I can't think of it.

Anyway, my vote goes to RPGs, as it is the genre I am currently playing, even having in mind that I started with Adventure.
