I love mechwarrior ! I remmember when I had the mechwarrior 3, and I always liked to try a predecesor :) Thank you for putting this in ! :kosta:

Guest 13-04-2005 09:35 PM

What program was used to compress the files? windows says it's an unknown compression method :(

Flop 13-04-2005 10:09 PM

Damn. What a response time. If I'm not mistaken someone requested this earlier today. :)

I must admit that I never actually played the first one, so I'm kind of looking forward to giving it a try. I'd also like to thank The Fifth Horseman for a truly brilliant review. I particularly like the technical notes. Very thoroughly reviewed. This is the level everybody should aim for, IMO. Cheers Horseman. :ok:

Micge 13-04-2005 10:09 PM

Oh! My! God! I sent an email asking for this game like 2 days ago or was it today. been kinda hectic here :P. Good service anyway guys.:Brain:
This was one of my first games ever and I played it ALOT on my old 286 machine back in around '90-95 when I still had that comp. I still play Mechwarrior 2 which I bought when it came out, but now with the real thing available I can kiss it goodbye. :bye:

Thank you Abandonia for making my day, week, month and year! Donation on the way.

Yobor 13-04-2005 11:08 PM

Yes, I remember I just recently threw this game away because I couldn't get it to work :P

BeefontheBone 13-04-2005 11:28 PM

that is a good reponse time, but i reckon just a coincidence - it'd take longer than that to do the shots and review and archive, let alone actually getting it updated. but still, a pleasant coincidence.

guest: get the latest version of winrar to uncompress the files.

claframboise 14-04-2005 12:39 AM

it won't unzip, i also got the unknown compression method popup and when i tried using win rar it got about 12 of the files and said their were errors on the other 84

Flop 14-04-2005 12:58 AM

I unzipped it just fine, using winrar. You may want to try downloading it again.

You need a recent version of winrar to uncompress the files. Winrar is freely available across the net.

MV75 14-04-2005 03:54 AM

Ah, great game.

I bought it years ago and still have it. I remember playing it on my first PC computer (XT). I never followed the story though, as I kept just doing missions and getting better mechs. In the end I had a full squad of battle masters, but had missed out on the story line side, so I had never really finished it.

This is a true classic. The graphics are not very impressive these days, but I finished this game three times in a row back then. It was lots of fun especially when your team of light mechs went up against a team of medium-to -heavy mechs and you survived with a mech that was 75 % destroyed.

A hint. The trick to this game is salvage. The contracts don't pay a lot, but the salvage on expensive enemy mechs is what pays the bills. So do not completely destroy them, but disable them instead. If you're close you can try blowing the cockpit away. From a distance, try to blow one of its legs away.

Another hint is to find the perfect balance bewteen missiles and hevay energy weapons. You can blow a leg of a mech with a couple of PPC's and while you cool down you can use the missiles to protect yourself. Remember you can (sometimes) jump over hills and suprise enemies from the rear.

I think I've played the entire mechwarrior series except the last one and they all were as much fun as the first one.

Question : Who ripped who off anyway ? Robotech or BattleTech ? Or is it a franchise or something. ? For a fact, some of the mechs in BattleTech are also present in RoboTech.

Happy gaming,
Lodewijk

The Fifth Horseman 14-04-2005 08:58 AM

Battletech ripped Robotech. Recently they had to dump the whole Robotech-lookalikes part of their merchandise, since the company that gave them rights (Robotech-based game, then they were carried over to Battletech) decided to quite their side of the deal.

As for the unpacker, just get Total Commander file manager. It has built-in unpackers for several popular formats.

PS. Similar to Alien Breed? You must be joking...

MasterGrazzt 14-04-2005 02:50 PM

I just gotta jump in here to defend BattleTech... Harmony Gold was unreasonable with their demands, and it wasn't recently. It was in the early 90s. Does the BattleMaster or Maraduer really resemble any Veritechs? I miss those designs, too. Also, BattleTech has created it's own flavour, style and world and no longer resembles Robotech/Macross at all, not that it resembled it too much in the first place, and anyone who says otherwise is just one of those people who take inspiration as "idea theft".

About the game, I never bothered with the story etiher. To be honest, it's not good at all.

lgonggr 14-04-2005 03:23 PM

Hey, I like both of them. I really don't care who ripped who off, that was just something I wondered about. Nevertheless, a bunch of mechs are completely identical in both techs. the marauder is one. I believe the warhammer is also. Not quite sure how many more, but there are definitely more. Anyway, who cares, the more mechs the merrier.
I watched three years of epsiodes of Robotech when I was just a little zit. Fifteen years later I still long for my own mech :). Hot damn, that series was cool.

Cheers,
Lodewijk

Indeed, however the lawyers of Harmony Gold might have different opinion.

And the warhammer was also a general destroid mech. And I think the phoenix hawk was as well. Similar to a battleoid anyway. :)

The Fifth Horseman 15-04-2005 02:44 PM

Phoenix Hawk, Stinger and Wasp are all based off of Veritechs. Battloid mode, right, and then the gerwalk mode - which happens to look almost the same as airmech mode.

HaggardProph 15-04-2005 09:21 PM

I'm really having some trouble with this game. I cannot get through an entire mission without the game crashing. I'm using DOSbox 0.63. There is not any cause listed, just a black screen. Can anyone provide some insight?

claframboise 16-04-2005 01:41 AM

Ok I got a newer version of win rar and it unzipped fine, but whenever i try to open any of the exe files it says im missing the pif file

wat do i doo??????

i really like this game and i can't play it and its pi$$ing me off!

Guest 16-04-2005 08:42 AM

Just read the text under the review before spamming the forum :

"TECHNICAL NOTES:
Mechwarrior 1 does not function under Dos Box v0.63. It works properly under v.0.61 as far as I know, though."

Anyway : great game :kosta:

Nobody 16-04-2005 02:49 PM

To get this game to work under DosBox .63 change the line that says

Code:

intelligent=true
to

Code:

intelligent=false
it is in the midi configuration block.

This fixes the problem where the game locks up on completing the first mission.

wendymaree 16-04-2005 02:50 PM

Well done! :ok:

claframboise 16-04-2005 06:27 PM

i'm not using dos box i'm using vdm sound. dos box won't run on my crappy 666 megahert bed room computer

claframboise 17-04-2005 04:50 AM

Yaaaa, i got it to work. :D

it turns out i had the file buried to deep for vdms to work. i moved it into the root folder and it works fine now :Brain:

Chuck the plant 17-04-2005 12:44 PM

Chuck the plant 22-04-2005 11:17 AM

I guess you're too young to understand... ;)

Anyway, IS this the one with "Team Banzai" in a "guest appearance" or not?

The Fifth Horseman 22-04-2005 02:33 PM

1. If you don't explain what are you asking about, nobody here can answer your question.

2. I played this game to the death, and so no mention of anything called "team bazai".

Chuck the plant 22-04-2005 05:10 PM

What is so difficult to understand about "Is this the game with 'Team Banzai' in it?"? And I guess that answers my question ;)

Gargantou 23-04-2005 10:37 AM

And the mechas in the game aren't "technically" from Robotech, but from Macross, seeing as Robotech was a series that took 3 different anime series and combined'em, so if we're gonna be real those meches acctually came from Macross :P

Btw, thanks for putting it up guys, I'm a huge fan of the BT universe, just recently found my older brothers copy of BattleTech 1(The RPG) and started playing it.

May I ask, do any of you know if MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries went "on-and-on"? Because I really want such a game, I was dissappointed when I "learnt" that you acctually finish MW4: Mercenaries and can't continue to play it with your "team"! :wall:

Anyway, gj, great review and screens!

wendymaree 23-04-2005 10:42 AM

Let me check that (re Mechwarrior 2) and come back to you. :)

I complained to them way back about mw2 mercs being too short, and they wrote me up a patch and sent it to me. It let me continue and basically keep doing every single mission in the game instead of just ending. I'm pretty sure that's what it did, it's been a long time since I last played, and yea, I'm sure it let me do a helluva lot more missions. I dunno if they publicly released it, probably did, but I should have it here anyway on a disc somewhere......

If you find it that'd be great, I just found my old laptop that has Win95 and one of the more "recent" DOS versions on it, so I can finally run MW2 Mercenaries(I was too freaking lazy to get it to run on XP)

Guest 05-05-2005 12:36 AM

Actually, Mechwarrior2:mercs lets you continue with the random missions. I have the titanium edition and it let me. There was a patch for that game, and it was publically released. As far as I know, the only difference between Mercs Titanium edition and patched Mercs is that the titan edition has 3d accelleration.

Georgez 10-05-2005 11:19 AM

I spent many hours with this game in 1991-92. It was form me a first game with 1st person shooting part. I loved to hire and dissmiss new crew and command them in battles. And then see how their skills grow during succesful batles. Sometimes I invited friend to help, because commanding 4 additional mechs, and driving and shooting at same time with your own it was pretty taugh task sometimes for one. What I remember yet - negotianting missions, trading with spare parts and ammunitions while buyimg them on one planet and selling on another. Travelling while searching some specific spare parts for your mechs. etc. This was certainly my best game at this time. Thanks.

Guest 25-05-2005 11:06 PM

Im having trouble installing this game I got VDMSound winwar to unzip it and when I click on install it says something about the pif file anyone give me any help?

The Fifth Horseman 30-05-2005 03:00 PM

IIRC, it's non-WIN-compatibile. Try DosBox, works like a charm (and should work VERY well even on slower machines).

zgtdriver 11-06-2005 01:34 PM

I have been looking for the original Mechwarrior for years if anyone knows where to get it or wants to sell a copy with code book my e-mail is ***edit by strobe
I got to play the original at a friends years ago have always wanted to play again.
Front Mission 3 is Good and FM4 is ok great features but too short of a game I thought. Let me know.

***sorry, but this game is ESA-protected, so there's no way to get it but buying it

The Fifth Horseman 13-06-2005 11:33 AM

http://www.the-underdogs.org . They have ESA's permission for hosting the game.

Strobe, don't you think it was a little harsh on him? From what I understood wasn't asking for w***z, but for possible buy link or a trade offer of a second-hand copy.

Either way, I doubt this is possible. No data storage device - especially a floppy - can survive for 14 years undamaged.

I have dosbox 0.63 and mechwarrior works just fine. Do you have these settings in your
dosbox.conf?

fullscreen=true
fulldouble=false
fullfixed=true
fullwidth=640
fullheight=400

intelligent=false

The Fifth Horseman 04-08-2005 11:07 AM

IIRC, the HOTU copy is cracked. So the login sequence skips automatically. All it really is is copy protection question. You cannot enter player name there or anything like that.

For playing MW in Windows, you'll need some slowdown program.

Ben 15-08-2005 10:17 PM

I agree that Battletech had ripped off Robotech. It's SOOOOOOOOOOO obvious, even if you turn a blind eye to the veritech designs (hah!) there are still the Warhammer, Marauder and Rifleman(copied for FASA's Boardgame)! That only leaves the Battlemaster,Jenner and Locust(which are strikingly similar to the Zentraedi Battlepods in mechanics and movement... if not looks).
The original designers obviously had a flair for designing, because the Robotech models are timeless and sleek. Whereas the western designs;...well suck.(no i'm not asian). Why? Because the Robotech designs were penned by manga artists while the few original Battletech/mechwarrior designs was done by boring geeks without any artistic ability (how else could you come up with a design like the Jenner?! Come on!!)
For anyone who thinks that Robotech and Battletech designs are very different, here is an important number to write down:
01144 20 7431 6902
Ask for the Very good optometrist who works there, she might be able to help you.
Good luck

The Fifth Horseman 17-08-2005 12:49 PM

Yeah, the quality difference is quite obvious... but we can't do anything about it.

so how do i get v0.61? I'm sorry, I'm not that computer literate--do I get it off of the same site as I did v0.65? I have windows xp...

The Fifth Horseman 07-08-2006 01:23 PM

To save your time, it's on this page.

GrimFang4 10-08-2006 03:42 PM

This game is so much better of a prequel than Mechwarrior for SNES.

The v0.65 DosBox changes that I made to get it to work are:

edit dosbox.conf (I think this is right. I did it on a different computer.) using Notepad

change the line under the [midi] section where it says
mpu401=intelligent

change to
mpu401=false

You might not get sound... But the game won't freeze (though it might look like it sometimes).

Mountain King 04-11-2006 10:50 PM

Thank you, I've been looking for this, since I couldn't rig one of those flap disks into my comp to install the original.

Ahh, good old times, running behind Battlemasters with a Locust and then blasting its legs off with my M.Gun :brain:

It was not challenging after that :max:

Guest 29-11-2006 02:45 AM

change to

Yups, just like several people said before, disabling MPU-401 emulation in dosbox.conf fixed the problem.

Guest_Jake_* 18-06-2007 06:38 AM

I'm using dosbox .70, and disabled MPU-401, which works.

However, I can't seem to do anything pertaining to 'CREW'. When I go to the Blazing Aces screen to assign personnel to mechs, the screen just peels and bitmaps to eternity. Also, at the bar, when I try to recruit, the command prompt to hire or decline doesn't work and I am stuck.

Do u know what my problem might be?

This game bring back memories!!

You downloaded DOSBox from here, right?
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1

If you did and you downloaded the approriate installer, you shouldn't have to unzip anything to install DOSBox and no working installer would mean a corrupt download. Try download DOSBox again.

Guest 28-07-2007 07:26 PM

Yes, I downloaded it from there. But, I didn't know I needed an installer. There's no links for any installer, but I'm guessing the installer is the name to the right of the version? Also, could someone maybe give me a link to the installer download?

Remember to disable MPU-401 emulation before running Mechwarrior - the game doesn't like it.

Mech Warrior 07-09-2007 12:40 PM

This game ruulz.

By far the best Mechwarrior game ever created: Combat, tactics, trading and storyline...

Hint:
Mech trading is the way to fortune: Buy from industrial core worlds, sell to outback worlds.

Hint 2:
Anything with PPCs. <_<

Only three mechs in the game have PPCs: Marauder, Warhammer and Battlemaster. Marauder doesn't really count, since its' cooling system is completely inadequate. Warhammer is a bit better, but still has a tendency to overheat, and Battlemaster... well, let's just say the big fella is named quite appropriately.

Hey guys, I hate to say it but I'm a dunce when it comes to computers and getting stuff to work. I probably put my knowledge on a scale from 1-10 at about a 2. I can't seem to get Mechwarrior to work on DosBox v0.72. I get the game to start, and i get to the mission stage, however when i complete the mission, everything goes black and i have a blinking underscore at the top left. My computer doesn't crash, and i can get out the program just fine by 'X-ing' the top right, however i can't get the game to work beyond that point. I tried following what the reviewer put as far inputing the commands @ dosbox.conf, and it had absolutely no effect. I even went so far as to download the old v0.61, but i can't even get the program to work, let alone try mechwarrior on it. Would anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I've played Wolfenstein3D on it and it works just fine. so i don't think it's DosBox, just the game. It's an awesome game and it brings back a lot of memories from when i was younger. I'm also going to try Battletech1. the very first game Battletech came out with (i believe). I didn't quite care for the second one, but the first and third one was great.

Oh man, thanks! :amused: I've just started playing MW1 and have been experiencing a lot of problems. I was starting to worry I'd never be able to play it.

Adamg 29-02-2008 06:55 PM

Does anyone else have display problems with the crew page, or crashes when hiring more crew? And if you do, do you know how to fix it?

Adamg 29-02-2008 07:48 PM

Aha! I fixed the errors with the crew status page, and the error with the crew recruitment at the bar! Turns out the problem was created when the game was cracked and the copy protection eliminated. I downloaded Mechwarrior from our good friend The Underdogs and that copy worked perfectly without any errors.

We have an unofficial manual though with the copy protection codes on Abandonia, so it's just an inconvenience to type the codes in. But at least the game actually works. I suppose I probably should upload the working version.

The Fifth Horseman 29-02-2008 10:29 PM

Adam: I'll take care of that tomorrow.

DanielLaki 06-05-2008 07:07 PM

This led me to abandonia. One of my all time favourites. Excellent. And ******* hard sometimes.

CorruptMylar 23-03-2009 05:05 AM

I have a question about sound. When I'm at the "finger" screen, I don't hear any sound. I hear music when I go to the bar. I hear the foot stomping sounds and shooting sound effects when I'm in battle. What sounds am I supposed to hear? mpu401=false

The Fifth Horseman 23-03-2009 01:14 PM

On the title screen, in the bar, and when you win or lose a mission.

Super Rifleman 25-03-2009 09:12 PM

Super Rifleman

I'm having the Crew related problem as well... Have you posted the fix for it yet??? I have been missing this game for years... You guys have a fricken awesome thing going here... Thankyou... Your other patches fix all the other problems... I also have spotty sound as well... Is there anything for that???

The Fifth Horseman 26-03-2009 01:06 PM

If I remember right, the game archive on the site has been replaced a while ago with one that doesn't suffer from the crash/garble on the crew screen. Download the current one and see if you get the crash with it as well.

What do you mean by "spotty sound", exactly? Mechwarrior doesn't offer much in the way of sound. The four MIDI tunes mentioned above and some PC-Speaker SFX during combat are all there is.

Sometimes I get sound in the finger page sometimes I don't... Sometimes I get sound in the bar sometimes I don't... I basically have the game licked... I have all the mechs I need to confront the dark wing... I have the game to that point as well... Let just say I'm good with a jenner... But not that good... I was hopeing to fix this version so I wouldn't have to start over... Not to mention the fact that it took me two hours to get this one working... The only reason I did was because you had it laid out step by step... There is no dummy list for uninstall and reinstall... LoL

The Fifth Horseman 26-03-2009 03:25 PM

Just unpack it into a differently named directory and copy the savegames from your current copy of the game (hint: those would be the most recently modified files in the game directory).

I can look into preparing a fix of some sort, but to do that I'd have to have a copy of the borked-up version of the game so I can find out which files differ.

Super Rifleman 26-03-2009 03:36 PM

How did I get the screwed up copy... I downloaded it from this website... I see your from Poland... I'll have to ask my aunt as I still have family living in Poland... I believe the relatives we have left are Martinovich's...

The Fifth Horseman 26-03-2009 03:45 PM

Just zip the faulty copy, upload the zip to Mediafire and send me the link. I'll take care of the rest.
If you manage to do it in the next hour, I'll (hopefully) have a patch ready by tomorrow.

Super Rifleman 26-03-2009 04:30 PM

Sorry I was off playing the game again... I am not very computer savy but I think I got it uploaded... Try this http://www.mediafire.com/file/may2fl...echwarrior.zip P.S. It is 1:30 P.M. over here... What time is it over there??? Let me know if that helps... Thankyou again for all your help...

The Fifth Horseman 26-03-2009 04:39 PM

It's 6:45 PM right now. :)

The Fifth Horseman 26-03-2009 07:33 PM

Hm, that's peculiar.
The files are all precisely identical with the healthy copy - you shouldn't be experiencing any issues when entering the crew screen.

Super Rifleman 26-03-2009 08:04 PM

It was working when I originally installed it... I had the after mission crash problem... I changed the code for those problems... Then it stopped working... I tried both the =uart and =false both fixed the after mission crash... But neither made a difference in the crew screen crashes... The only other thing I can think of is... The instuctions told me to install the game in the dosbox screen... It says Mechwarrior was not installed properly... It also will not let me get into config or setup... Advice???

The Fifth Horseman 26-03-2009 08:52 PM

When does it say the game was not installed properly?

mexbrush 23-05-2009 10:12 PM

I'm playing with dosbox 0,65 and it crashes during the action,
no messages shows up at the status window, any advice?

It crashes with all versiones.

And what can I do after Jump to land safely?

The Fifth Horseman 24-05-2009 08:20 AM

The game crashes because of some kind of conflict with the newer MPU401 emulation mode. To fix that open DOSBox.conf , find where it says mpu401=intelligent, change that to mpu401=UART and save the modified config.

As for jump-jetting, you have to fire the jets in short bursts to control your fall. It takes some practice to get the hang of it.
Don't forget that as long as your mech has both legs, you can stand up after falling prone by pressing U.

I'll try, thx for the tips

mexbrush 24-05-2009 06:09 PM

It works with uart thx. Another ques. how to target different parts of the mechs, by enter I can select the targets but to direct specific parts ?

-ok found them

The Fifth Horseman 25-05-2009 07:11 AM

You need to target them manuually. That's how it works.

mexbrush 25-05-2009 03:00 PM

it's hard in combats till you get used to it but by N and M can direct my aim up/down.

Had couple mech leg destroyed but still couldn't make a neat headshot :embarassed:

Ghostie 02-08-2009 05:42 AM

Oh man..I remember playing this game ad naseum as a kid. Kind of brings a tear to my eye to see it again.....and I played it on a computer so slow it took twenty minutes to complete a fight. It was about fifteen seconds between each battlemech step lol. Thanks to whoever put it on this site

I loved this one in my younger days...one of the best game purchases my parents ever made. But does anyone remember the Mechwarrior version on the GEnie network? It was multiplayer and open ended. As you gained experience, you gained rank and the ability to pick planets to invade. You could only play cooperatively, but success/failure in a battle affected the big picture.

Eric in Florida 23-07-2010 09:37 PM

Finally!

I loved this game when I was a kid and have wanted to play it again for years! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how to get it going even after downloading. Is there a straight forward step-by-step on how to get the game going on a PC running Windows XP?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Step 2 : run the game in dosbox.

Hi everyone,

After setting mpu401=uart in Dosbox 0.74, and after trying to start a mission, the screen with the rocket blasting off before starting a mission has an error message on it. It says "Put Simulator disk into drive c: If you are using: 5 1/4" use disk 3 3 1/2" use disk 2." I can't get past this screen or message in the game. Does anyone know what I should do? Thanks for your help!

The Fifth Horseman 07-04-2011 07:32 AM

Your mounts and the directory structure they contain, please.
Did you download the game from here?
How are you running it in DOSBox? Normally, tailored config, drag-and-drop, a frontend... ?

Are you referring to how I've unzipped the file? I had a directory called "mw" under the "program files (x86)" directory where I put everything from the zipped file.

Yes I did.

IIRC, there are 2 required changes to Dosbox.conf: I set mpu401=uart and aspect=true. As far as running it, I start Dosbox, mount the mw directory as my c: drive, execute mw.exe, and start the game.

Thanks again for any insights that you may have!

Wrong, never put user files in progfiles.
Read and apply:
http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=22241

Move that mw folder to your \oldgames\ folder, run dosbox and input:

cd mw
mw

Doesn't load missions?

Ever since i got 4 mechs it doesn't do the mission part of the game. I take a contract, blast off, but i instantly win every mission. Although it is fun to be rich i don't get to fight anymore. Why would this be happening?

Possible if you are only taking garrison contracts. Garrison missions can end with no combat at all.

Problem with Crew screen

Hi, I'm sorry to bother with this. I read all the thread but I can't find a solution to the crew screen.

I downloaded the game from here, and three different versions from HOTUD and all have the same problem.

I read another user got a version without the protection copy cracked, and he has to insert the codes, but the problem was solved. All versions I have are the cracked ones.

:lame:

Never played a MechWarrior game. I want start from this one. I find it deeper than the other ones I saw, because they have only the action gameplay.
