Something that gets asked/discussed on any gaming community about once a week  but still, always interesting to know what people think.

I used to cheat like crazy when I was younger, which is a shame really as I feel now it spoiled some of the games. Now, however, I play the games correctly and enjoy every moment of it. There is something really satifying about compleating a game without using cheats at all.

One really strange thing that I have found is that sometimes I am really let down by the AI in a game and almost feel like I have cheated (for example the computer attacks the strongest point of my defences in a Strategy game).

cheesegrater 18-04-2005 05:46 PM

I only cheat in online games.

Fruit Pie Jones 18-04-2005 05:50 PM

No way. That ruins the fun.

DeathDude 18-04-2005 05:51 PM

Occasionly I'll do it, sometimes I do it to just mess with the game a little like going invincible and reigning havoc in Deus Ex

Havell 18-04-2005 06:05 PM

I usually have more than two saves in each game, one I play properly and another I use cheats for for fun. In games like Morrowind I give myself the ability to run really fast and jump over buildings and things.

Fawfulhasfury 18-04-2005 06:13 PM

Same as havell. I will play the game without cheats and play it with the coolest and most cheats. Like in megaman legends where you can get super jump and roller skates.

Hail-To-The-King 18-04-2005 06:15 PM

Only once I beat it, or it's frustratingly impossible, as it is with most arcade games.
(Ikaruga drove me insane)

Fruit Pie Jones 18-04-2005 06:18 PM

I should amend my earlier post: After I've beaten a game legitimately, if I'm not sick of it, I may go back through, cheating like the devil, just to see what else I can find.

DeathDude 18-04-2005 06:21 PM

Yeah beating the game, and then just having fun that maybe you were too scared to do, or just fooling around, always helps to prolong the game experience.

reigning havoc in Deus Ex
Ahh a great game... but Deus Ex 2 was a real dissapointment (bought a new graphics card so I could play it & Doom 3 without problems and they *both* turn out to be horrible games).

Deus Ex is also great fun multiplayer.

Lizard 18-04-2005 07:05 PM

I never cheat first time I play a game(on that difficult...)
But then...that is whole other thing
I like "cool" cheats that dont give that much advantages but, are just fun(matrix mode and unlimeted grenades and no other weapon mode in AvP for example)

Danny252 18-04-2005 07:09 PM

Its fun cheating in RTCW. Ill just get god mode and choose a certain weapon to use to wreak havok. its fun using panzerfausts 24/7... or that taser..

Scarface 18-04-2005 07:48 PM

I only cheat when the game is getting on my nerves and I'm just about to break something :D

I bought a new graphics card (X800 XT) because Doom 3 was annoyingly jerky on my old one, and haven't bothered reinstalling it yet. Still, it makes Half-Life 2 nice and sexy, and UT2004 is gorgeous with maxed out settings (plus the menu announcer swears at you, for added comedy effect)...

I almost never cheat at anything - it always bores me.

ReamusLQ 18-04-2005 07:58 PM

I hate when people cheat online, because that to me, totally defeats the purpose. I remember playing my barb from Diablo II in open battle net once so that my friend and I could use a mule and trade items, and these people would come up moving super fast with like, 100000 aura's around them and the look like death lords and they say "Hey, want some really cool hacked items!?!?!?" and then as soon as you walk out to go beat up some monsters they dice you into a thousand bits with one hit...it really pissed me off

TaloN 18-04-2005 08:06 PM

cheats should only EVER be used in the follwing circumstances:

-single player games , multiplayer = hacks and you deserve to die if you low enough to use hacks.
- if you cant defeat a certain point
- if your just mucking around

my bro bought halflife a few years back,f irs thting he did was put godmode on. he hadnt even got a gun at this point.

i couldda killed him

DeathDude 18-04-2005 08:20 PM

Don't see the point in cheating online, someone is bound to find out your doing it, plus you'll start to get a bad rep from people if you do it alot.

A. J. Raffles 18-04-2005 09:44 PM

I rarely cheat, but my reasons are practical rather than moral: basically it depends on the game. For example I played Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine mostly in the invincible mode, because I liked the puzzles etc but didn't care much for the action sequences. I'm just not any good at them and usually it does spoil my enjoyment of a game somewhat if I keep getting shot by the bloody KGB no matter what I do. But in the type of games I usually play ("pure" adventures, mostly), cheating would be completely pointless, so I don't do it.

TheGiantMidgit 18-04-2005 09:50 PM

The only times I end up cheating are after I've beaten a game and get bored...

example: Running around at the intro to Half Life shooting scientists and then laughing when they say "Not now Gordan, I'm busy" from the floor in a pool of their own bodily fluids.

-or-

Setting my jump level to like, 2000 in Morrowind and watching my character shriek through the sky in a dress.

SQbroomcloset 19-04-2005 12:21 AM

The only time I cheat is if I am at a hard spot on the game so it is sometimes for me :D

hanut 19-04-2005 02:49 AM

Yes, I admit it. I cheat. But I know where to draw the line. If you cheat while playing a single player game thats really tough so that you can make it more fun for yourself, hey why not? But when you go online and start cheating , thats when it gets unethical. Its just wrong to ruin someone elses fun for yourown selfish reasons. True achievement does not come from winning or losing but knowing that you played fair and did your best. Dude , if you lose a game of CS online, or WoW online, its not like your life's gonna fall apart or something. If you lose , just practice and try harder next time.
I personally think single player cheating is fine. Games are supposed to be fun and cheatcodes can add that replaybility factor. Finish the game and CHEAT ON DUDE!

rabadi 19-04-2005 05:14 AM

Is using walkthrough considered cheating? If so, then yes, I cheat all the time. I can only play roughly one or two hours everyday, and I don't have enough free time to explore games by myself. So whenever I'm stuck, I will consult a walkthrough. I don't want to play a game that will make me stuck after so many hours just because I do not pick certain objects in the beginning of the game. I don't have countless hours to dedicate for gaming only, so when I play a game I'll make sure I do it right :sneaky:

gregor 19-04-2005 05:23 AM

In arcade games at bosses, just to even the odds. he, he.....

thats item editing. lots of small charms loaded with high level auras, extra speed modifiers etc.
anyway, i cheat sometimes in single-player games but i have only ever cheated in d2 online (but that was after i had been around a while and i wanted a change of pace) but a character that has heavily edited items that are extremely powerful can kill diablo 2 so i gave that up. and only diablo 2 newbies call that "hacking" as its only editing character files. real hacking on d2 is using maphack etc (been there, done that, got the hacked t-shirt :P) but d2 is full of hackers so you have to hack to keep up with most high level players

UnHoly 19-04-2005 10:38 AM

I don't cheat, even if game is really hard. I will be trying for hundred times, destroy my keyboard becuase of anger, my family will move away because of my damns but I will never use a cheat.
And I hate czheating in online games, especially in FPS. I think Valve has done a good thing banning all this CS cheaters. NO MERCY FOR CHEATERS :Titan: :guns: :butcher: :sniper:

Jackoliov 19-04-2005 11:16 AM

I cheated more when I was younger, but the only game I'll still cheat on now is the Sims, because otherwise it's pointless. I don't cheat in any strategy/shooter/rpg anymore.

As an avid player of online games, I absolutely refuse to cheat in them as I believe that destroys the whole purpose of the game, and when playing DAOC I saw cheating firsthand everywhere... don't want more of that.

...And in response to an earlier post, I don't consider a walkthrough cheating, as even if you figure out HOW to beat that particularily hard boss or the way through that impossible dungeon, you still have to face the elements and dangers to beat it...... if you turn on god mode or infinite ammo or whatever, it still defeats the challenge. When I'm very stuck, I'll refer to a walkthrough.

The_EgAt 19-04-2005 11:22 AM

I used to cheat all the time, then I realized that it takes all/most of the fun out of the game, so I've stopped cheating :D

DeathDude 19-04-2005 02:30 PM

Yeah I agree, sometimes cheating just takes the fun out of game if your using it say for infinite ammo or health or whatnot, beat the game faster, but the fun factor goes down.

Nyerguds 19-04-2005 05:21 PM

I have made it a hobby to find exploitable bugs in games after I've finished them. Got more than 20 such 'cheats' for Command & Conquer and C&C: Red Alert.

I don't consider a game beaten before I beat it without any cheats though.

Tulac 19-04-2005 05:59 PM

I rarely cheat, especially in more modern games, because the cheating is more complicated, you have to modify .ini files and what not, what hapenned to the good old IDDQD?

AlleyCat 19-04-2005 06:09 PM

I'll put it like this: I am against the concept of cheating, since I primarily play adventure games, I mean cheating as in consulting walkthroughs,

Having to "give up" is something I generally hate to do and that is what you're doing after finally getting a hint after having been stuck for hours (or days).

But SOMETIMES the puzzles just seem illogical and when I read the solution and think that I would not have thought of that in a million years.
It's worse when I read a hint and realise how obvious it was, then I just feel stupid for not having figured it out.

The point is I guess, that solving games on your own gives you a great feeling and cheating, well... doesn't?

Rogue 19-04-2005 06:18 PM

I do consult strategy guides, walktroughs and I use some cheats, just for fun of it, but mostly after i completed the regular game.

For example, a lot of times I play civ 2 on hardest level, while using memory cheat utility to add some cash to myself.

Tulac 19-04-2005 06:24 PM

It's OK as long as the AI cheats too eh?

Rogue 19-04-2005 06:27 PM

That wouild be a logical, wouldn't be? LOL
