Where is old "Some Statistics" thread? :eeeeeh:

A. J. Raffles 22-04-2005 11:02 PM

That reminds me: is there any way of telling how many reviews have been translated into other languages (other than counting, I mean)?

DeathDude 22-04-2005 11:26 PM

Wow very impressive stuff, thanks for bringing this to our attention Seb.

Thanks Tiki, but:

It's not Slovenic - it's Slovene and THERE IS NO HUNGARIAN!!!. I think you mean Croatian (Kosta's country)!

gregor 23-04-2005 06:00 AM

anyone noticed the almost double rate of adventure games? and low number of sports games?

Abandonia is turning into Adventureonia.

A. J. Raffles 23-04-2005 06:24 AM

Thanks for the list, Kon-Tiki. :ok:

Funny, I thought there were more than enough translators (except for Icelandic, perhaps), but apparently I was wrong...

Stroggy 23-04-2005 08:29 AM

Well I recently submit two reviews: one arcade, one adventure.
But the fact of the matter is: we love adventuregames.
I think the two most flourishing genres in abandonware are adventure and RPG simply because (and this goes mostly for adventuregames) there aren't a lot of them nowadays, so we return to the glorydays when adventuregames were popular and you didn't have to be a member of a special newspaper and such things in order to know whats going on with adventuregames. (and PC gamer giving an okay adventuregame like Moment of Silence a 14% doesn't help much either)

Reup 23-04-2005 09:13 AM

You also have to take into account that the late 80ies, early 90ies were the heydays of graphical adventure games! it was probably the most popular genre at the time, so everyone and their sister released huge series of them!

Well it's funny but true. The Slovenian team is the smallest one of them all (only two translators) Rainwife and myself. But we're the only one who cought up with the international site (currently again one review behind, due to a new update on the main site).

And when it comes down to adventure games - we still haven't enough of them!!!

Unknown Hero 23-04-2005 05:54 PM

Hungarian??? :ranting:

It's Croatian!!!

Tulac 23-04-2005 05:59 PM

Yeah and it's 339 reviews(added in the mean time :P)...

Kon-Tiki 23-04-2005 06:17 PM

It said Hu in the link, so I thought it was Hungarian :bleh: I'll change it to Huroatian then?

Tulac 23-04-2005 06:27 PM

It's Hrvatski ;)...
Much like Deutsch stands for German...

Kon-Tiki 23-04-2005 07:46 PM

Fixed, you East-European weirdoes :tomato: Putting HU for something that should be CR... what's Hungary's abbreviation then?

Havell 23-04-2005 07:59 PM

Croatia's abbreviation isn't HU, it's HR.

Tulac 23-04-2005 07:59 PM

Did you read my post? It's HR as in Hrvatski...(not HU)
Like German is DE, why isn't it GE?
And Hungary's abbrevation is H...

Kon-Tiki 23-04-2005 08:04 PM

Woops, it does come up as HR. Ah well, if you don't know that, you'd easily think it's for Hungary.

wormpaul 23-04-2005 09:31 PM

why a new topic for it

Tulac 23-04-2005 09:35 PM

Because the old one is gone duh...

Dino 24-04-2005 12:38 AM

This Hu-Hr mistake calls for a rebellion! :ranting:
*Shouts calling all East-European Croatian weirdoes to throw some :tomato: *
Proud to be Croat! :)

Sebatianos 24-04-2005 08:23 AM

Yes, just what would the west-European Croats say :eeeeeh: :D

A. J. Raffles 24-04-2005 10:05 AM

Or the South East Asian Croats, for that matter...

Sebatianos 26-04-2005 04:29 PM

Well it's not a sure thing. I still rember when I joined the site it was second (first was Civ II - which is in the second place now)!
So two top strategies in two top places!!!

Danny252 26-04-2005 06:17 PM

of course! strategy kicks behind.

To my knolige Civ2 has never been in the first spot.. it has ALWAYS been Ufo holding nr1...

Sebatianos 27-04-2005 07:03 AM

That's strange, because I remember it being in front when I joined in. Sorry I don't have a screenshot from that time - that might clear it up.

I have it but i am not sure if i should review it and send it for publishing since children might be looking for abandonware.

Well mostly because of the first post - it's the curent count of all the game categories and the latest update (along with the overal number of games). We had a sticky like this before, but it's gone (and I never found out why).

do you guys have games to post during the next week? if not, I'd like to say that it is a lot more enjoyable to come here and see a new game every day, than to have megas one or two times a week (like HOTU).

Get ready for a double update with two excelent games - we're going to break the 500 limit with style :max:

BeefontheBone 24-05-2005 05:59 PM

In case anyone wants a complete list of all the reviews on the site, it's here.

Sebatianos 24-05-2005 08:12 PM

I don't wanna split hairs here, but that's the list of reviews not games (we have more games then reviews, because we aren't alowed to host some of these games).

BeefontheBone 24-05-2005 09:31 PM

Well OK, it's the list of games you can get to by looking on the main page and reading reviews - it's useful for translators and us grammar bods to know how much work we have left (too much, too much! where's Havell when you need him eh?)

Sebatianos 25-05-2005 07:16 PM

Hope you like today's double feature!

Yes it is! It's going towards the 1000th game (but we do need a moment or two to get that far).

-False?

BTW - that's a joke used in the Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail caomputer game (by the 7th level). It's a part of the 125 questions long registration form you need to fill out (otherwise you won't be able to finish the game).

Then ill say: False :not_ok:

Dutch Abandonia was added on the 30th of May already, but It's finally operational!!!

A BIG :Brain: :Brain: :Brain: for them!

now strategy...

Sebatianos 18-07-2005 08:34 PM

Sorry I couldn't update the statistics last week (I was away). They're up to date again now!

BTW we're currently having around 70.000 visitors daily (between 65k and 75k) although our record is still just bellow 100.000 visitors.
There weren't any more penguines visiting (still only 3 visits from Antarctica) and I guess the holy seat lost its interest as well - still only 3 visits from Vatican.
We did get a second visitor from the Central African Republic though :ok:

mm_pie 18-07-2005 08:59 PM

Don't call me weird, but why have no simulations been added in ages.

Sebatianos 19-07-2005 08:10 AM

Probably because none have been reviewd

Do you know of a good (not ESA protected) simulation that is abandoned? Can you supply the game? Would you like to review one?

I'd be happy to add it.
I'm preparing a rather old simulation to be updated soon, but don't hold your breath (it might take a while).

Sebatianos 30-07-2005 10:36 PM

A very sad news everybody. Due to the technical problems (as well as the lack of alternative games to be updated) - yesterday was a day without an update (after quite a long time). Sorry - it happens (especially if you don't send in the reviews you promised :bleh: ).

MadMarius 05-08-2005 07:01 AM

This is a quidupal post already... I guess other people simply don't read this anymore (if that's the case, you can un-sticky it).

I just wanted to let you know, that we go another language Abandonia is translated to!

That's right Portugeesse has been added today. Abandonia reviews are currently translated (and displayed) in the following languages:
English
Deutsch
Espanol (sorry can't make the correct sign ~n)
Français
Nederlands
Portugues (sorry, can't make the ^e symbol)
Polski
Hrvatski
Norsk
Slovenski
íslenska

You must have in mind that topics from 3xblah could not be compared to those from Game Discussion forum because there is a link from game review to the game topic.

I would say it's great for two days! :)

Ah, but there is a direct link to the Abandonia Meeting topic in the news section...

Edit: By the way, will non-registered people be able to view it, then?

Sebatianos 14-11-2005 06:46 PM

View YES, reply NO

A. J. Raffles 14-11-2005 06:47 PM

But I thought the entire 3xBlah section wasn't visible for visitors?

Sebatianos 14-11-2005 06:52 PM

Well, you can simply log out and click on the forum... You'll see that you can view the entire 3Xblah section along with some others, but you'd only be able to post in the troubleshooting and game discusion.

That link will soon get pushed away in the archives by newly added news, while game topic link is always actual in game review. The fact remains that number of that topic's views is astonishing. However, I may be a little subjective! :)

Guests cant see boththe multiplayer, Art/Music, and tech/programming. Also, guests cant post in blahx3, but they can see it.

Of course, they can't see any of those secret ones either (VIP, admin, grammar team)

Here you have latest: On average 60 percent of the daily visits are made before 16:52. Based on the number of visitors of 54842 today so far, today your site may have 90592 page views (+/- 153).

18:00 - On average 66 percent of the daily visits are made before 18:01. Based on the number of visitors of 63082 today so far, today your site may have 94287 page views (+/- 124).

Now this may have something to do with the fact that the new Civilization game is shortly coming out, but hey - we have a new most popular game!!!

Tulac 28-11-2005 05:42 PM

The point is that a popular site linked to civ2 download on that "succesful" day (saturday I think), and so obviously the number of downloads of that game must have skyrocketed...

The popularity thing is derived from anequatino, written by Kosta, that involves both hits and downloads.

You'll have to ask him for details.

That's from the multitute of good-bye topics we locked away, as they went was off topic, was flaming - or in other ways just harmed the site. That's because we are the ones who actually built this site and we love it, and we won't let topics harm the good of the site. And we don't appreciate posts like this that makes us look like evil bastards on witchhunts. Now matter how hard people try to post anti-admin propaganda. ;)

Yes, we are so intimidated by someone who leaves the site over smilies - so we do everything in our powers to lock those topics so that people will forget the huge smiley uproar. You got us. I suggest you read the reasons for the closing of that topic.

And if you still have issues - contact Kosta, instead of editing your old posts to place in anti-admin propaganda. Thank you.

Grinder 04-06-2006 08:20 PM

Give it a rest, Tom. Seriously, this is going a little over the top. We do have PMs, you know. Unless, you want to make this widely accessible to the public, which would put you in the propaganda aspect, too.

Nice work Tom - BTW I thought only KOSTA could decide who is and who isn't a VIP, yet he wasn't online when someone removed my status... Which caused a real havoc in my PMs...

It is important that you realise that Tom didn't break in and try to resurect the old topic, Sebastianos did by editing his post(s). Right now it looks like Tom posted first, but it's really not the case.

If it was only of me, Sebastianos would be outright banned right now. There is really a difference with leaving because you can't work with the rest of the team anymore and having a private vandetta which goes as far as editing old posts to make other people look bad. And that difference is respect, in all kind. I have none left for Sebastianos right now, it's going in the negative even.

Grinder 04-06-2006 09:49 PM

I am neither ignoring the facts about Tom that you just pointed out nor am I promoting Sebatianos' actions. I am merely trying to calm certain people down. It is fairly obvious that Tom and Sebatianos have problems with each other, but, as Overlord so eloquently put it, this is not the place for it.
Peace.

Sebatianos 13-03-2008 04:20 PM

If you've noticed, many things have been happening to the site... unfortunately the ranking at Alexia still shows negative trends - we're still loosing ground... OK, we're still very high and I think there's not a single abandonware site that comes close to us at the moment, but not only that we can't seem to get into the top 10.000 sites, we're acctually still loosing places - not many, but we are.

Might this be connected to the makeover? Or that the links have changed and all the bots have to re-detect us?! ;)

Is this REALLY saying that we are less popular, less look upon and that people go elsewhere?

There are a lot of members from last year that you don't see around anymore. I suppose it could be that they have new names since many had to re-register.

Nothing to worry about. The stats will build themselves back up. Being the number one abandonware site is an accomplishment. You do have to wonder how much the bots affected the stats of old. Seemed they were coming from everywhere for a while.

I find this interesting. Very balanced representation of users from around the globe. Brazil caught me by surprise. I always thought Abandonia had a very European/North American flavor.

From Alexia.com ...
Abandonia.com users come from these countries:

United States11.3%
Brazil6.4%
Poland5.1%
Croatia4.8%
Germany4.8%

Dave 15-03-2008 12:12 PM

I'm quite optimistic (as always I know :amused:).
The new site layout brought us many problems, at first it was really ugly and buggy, now with the help of members, with suggestions and with lot of work, the site is improving everyday. I don't want to say that now it's ok and better than the old one. There is still lot to do.
A new colour layout could change things, the old site was a warm place (colours really made the difference). If we are able to fuse the features of the new one with the warm style of the old one...well, we will be at the top!
Let me remember guys about this data: from about 10000 members reached in four years to about 31000 members since the new site layout (some months).

Believe it or not, but Abandonia has more then
200.000 pages

Sebatianos 23-04-2008 07:51 AM

But still we are dropping... I guess the time has come that the online games made abandonware somewhat obscelete.

On the other hand, it's good for the comunity, because there will be much less ignorant leeches, who just want to play games, but don't respect them at all. This will also mean, that less and less people will consider abandonware/oldware as an alternative to new games and that probably more producers will start thinking about releasing their software as freeware, or at least stop actively protecting it (at least that's my wishful thinking).

gregor 23-04-2008 10:05 AM

also there were no major titles put on site lately. But there were some taken off in that little esa incident...

We are in 2008. Soon games like Half life, Far cry, Halo... will be the ones with oldies status. While these that are now "Abandoned ones" will become Antiques :)

Kugerfang 23-04-2008 11:45 AM

When does protection for Half-Life stop?

Geezer 23-04-2008 02:16 PM

I think we have a couple of things going on here. First the oldwarez list is badly in need of updating. I think there are more than a few abandoned titles that are not on the list.

Second we are entering a time where the face of abandonware is changing. The newly abandoned games as determined by the "period of ESA protection" guidelines are coming from the period of the mid nineties. 1993 and later. By that time multimedia and CDROM had taken a firm hold on the gaming industry. The majority of new abandonware is going to be too large to be hosted on Abandonia with the current status quo. There are still many games from prior to 1993 that can be added to the site but few of them are going to be considered a "major draw".

I think we are going to have to be content with a thinning of the potential audience unless Abandonia in some way wants to address the game size issue. The number of us old-schoolers seems to be dropping. I still wish they would "dress up" the ISO cellar a little more.

I would call both Starflight and Savage Empire major titles. I doubt we will see Half Life or Halo as abandonware any time soon.

Personaly I would like the title "dedicated to classic dosgames" to be changed to "dedicated to classic PCgames", and if Abandonia wishes to "walk with present time" that would have to be done, soon some games that weren't made for DOS will become abandonware, we have some on the site already (e.g. Re-Volt, The Sting...).

Some nice stats

My opinion is that the only way to check the popularity of a game is by seing the number of votes (scores) submitted by the players, since we can't track the number of downloads. Attention: popularity doesn't always equal quality! I've made a list of all the new games uploaded in 2009.

Basically yes, I'd just like to add a few thoughts:

If you do so, you also have to consider how long each game has been on site, therefore a more fitting value would be votes / day.
Alas, this does not work for some reasons:
1) If I am correct, we can not estimate the exact date on which a game was first published, as changes to the review or content overwrite this date in the game table. (A question for the admins?)
2) Until a certain point, each visitor had more than one vote for each game. You could vote every day, or whenever you had a new IP. Also, guests were allowed to vote. This was changed some time ago. Don't remember exactly, maybe mid of 2007?

Anyway, if you accept loose values, this probably is the best indicator.

We don't need to try and estimate (especially for the games uploaded in 2009) because we can always verify (like I did now) the news archives. The dates that I've put between the brackets are taken from the news archive.

Ok, but you have to do it manually then. I was thinking about an automated solution to calculate a game's polularity on site. As a workaround there might be a possibility to link between the news and the games tables and relate the first published date from the news with the score from the games. But perhaps I am totally wrong and this is a shot into the wrong direction.

Commentary: Pretty mediocre overall. The portuguese and the spanish are doing good as usual. No surprise there. What really bugs me are the Serbian and Italian. You'd think that with one coordination thread, one crew thread and a gazillion of posts each, they'd score at least 20 Review Translations... Unless they're secretly stocking reviews behind our back and plan to overthrow us the minute they see at least a weak point. Who knows... Seems Nick and Smiling Spectre (The Russian Crew) were stocking reviews as well, because it's a wonder how did they coordinate the entire thing with only two posts in their thread (the first one is Luchsen's though). Worth noting is the Hungarians' progress, from 4 Translations in 2008 they succeded in gathering 34 this year. So good luck in the future also.

Since the bug fix, 314 Reviews were translated overall.

Dave 12-11-2009 01:57 PM

It's not a secret that we are stocking reviews...we tested things, learned how to update without damaging the site and we are planning to release more translated reviews and announcements.
We have more than 10 titles ready and in queue and we've added 2 on site.
However many members of the crew aren't active or busy lately, can't force them to work ;)

Tulac 12-11-2009 02:10 PM

I know that in Croatian section we had a few people trying to translate, but it didn't work, so you can change that +2 into 0 because both of those translations were unsuccesful even though the translator followed all the guidelines, of course needless to say people lost motivation to translate in the mean time.

bobson 05-01-2010 08:19 PM

It's the count of games added to the site without the ones "in queue" (in grammar squad).

Fubb 05-01-2010 09:36 PM

Yea but i already have 3 review that are actually on and everything, not in que...go to my page and see :p I need recognition! *is greedy and powerhungry*

bobson 05-01-2010 09:49 PM

Balance of Power 1990 was added way back in 2008 - it does not count.

I have 13 reviews (6 old, 4 stub replacements, and 3 from 2009) + 2 in grammar - I do not complain, I just write :)

Do You need some games to write about?

Fubb 05-01-2010 10:08 PM

Well, im slowly learning to play Central Intellegiance (the ISO is on the site but Total Anarchy wants a review,) so ima write a review for that game....dont know of any other games though

bobson 06-01-2010 05:05 AM

You can look through request games forum or a submissions thread - there is a really big list of games. It needs a lot of work to find something there, when the titles does not tel you much.

Soon there will be an easier-to-look-at list with games we believe needs reviews at most. TA with Dave are working on that one.
