If you get bored (like me) to waiting 2-3 minutes for the Windows boot, there is a solution!
Look here! |
now that's something to dream about, nice find!
2-3 min !?!?!?!?!?
My XP desktop takes tops 30 sec... And I think that's slow compared to my Fluxbox desktop which takes half of that. Either I got a fast comp (Pentium 1.4 GHz 768 DDR) or you have a lot of snot running in the background. Time to reinstall maybe? :max: |
2-3 minutes..?
Mine must take at most 30 seconds, everything included... |
My PII 450 does not takes 45sec to boot. :D
But all of my computers mostly take longer to shut down, as all of them are set to clear page file. |
My computer rearly boots - it's always on.
About iRAM: the boot time is not what's important. It's that the programs in Windows loads a lot faster because the slowest part of the sistem - magnetic hard drive - is eliminated (or better said: replaced with ramdisk). |

My computer is Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, Windows 98 and Windows XP SP2 2002 dual boot! My computer in both Win98 and XP takes anything between 15-30 seconds and I don't think I need that stuff! But its good for the people who really save seconds and for some serious people!
Thanx |
Delete all the crap from the startup process and defragment the HD, this alone will help already. ;)
it depends LOT on speed of HDD
Not only on HDD speed but many factors!
My HDD speed for XP is 7200 RPM(IBM HDD,80 GB) and Win98 is on Samsung 40 GB(5400 RPM), but if ur computer is infected with virus ultimately windows will take longer time! Plus, always good to keep the computer free from unwanted softwares, its good for fast boot! |
My DOS system takes ~10 sec to boot. :)
Well... my htpc boots in 13 secs and returns from hibernation in 9-11 seconds. I use a stripped down version of xp pro (loading the required media player software takes 5 seconds extra from hibernation).
The largest problem is the bios loading. On my asus htpc, it almost takes as long to initiate windows, as it takes to fully load windows. So as long as it takes forever to start up my hardware, you won't see me happy just because I can cut of a few secs from XP booting . |
today when I got to my pc it just went into hibernation as soon as I moved the mouse (it was on before) then I started it and it took a few milliseconds to get to the desktop.
Mine takes yonks to boot becuase of all the crap that's on it. Also the fact that there's so much stuff on it that I can't defrag it! I really should format but I can't be bothered.
about a month for me, but i do use most of the crap it's loading. i tend to be doing something else during that time anyway, but it's very annoying if i turn it off then remember somrthing i meant to do :S

I have around 10%(C:) on one of my partition(where windows are) and 30% (D:)on another where games and music are, so does that affect my booting to much?
Also on C: it shows me the same amount of space even though I deleted office and installed it on D:, does anyone else have such problems with HD readings? |
ya, it has happended to me sometimes that space shown is not correct! But why it happens I have never been able to figure out! I don't think that ur current harddisk partition is correct! I suggest u to give 50 % space to each drive, to avoid any problems, if they occur. or if you have 40 GB harddisk u can have 10,10 and 20 GB partitions or 10 GB each partitions. Also installing office on another drive does not make a difference, but I will suggest to install in the same drive where windows are.
I would suggest buying a retail partition program as opposed to the windows built in one. The professional programs give you many more options, like changeing the partition size with out having to format the partition. Partition magic is the creme de la creme as far as I know.
well, my partitions and their space:
C: 23.3GB used 23.4GB total D: 12.0GB used 23.4GB total E: 1.80GB used 3.99GB total F: 3.88GB used 3.89GB total G: 10.2GB used 28.4GB total I: 45.0GB used 51.0GB total P: 498MB used 1.99GB total T: 4.3GB used 4.87GB total The system is currently using D, as the hard drive with C, F (and maybe I,P and/or T) seems to be a bit buggered. C: system D: Usually saved word files, Backup system E: Usually temporary, currently saved word files F: Downloads G: Games (mine.) I: Good question... P: Usually page, I believe T: Uh.. normally theres H, which is java documents, and I may normally be backup system.. nice partitions though, eh? |
My XP takes about 30-45 seconds to boot, but I leave my computer on all day. Hasn't been turned off in over a year!
my main pc windows98se takes all together after putting in the password 2-3 min to boot and load the desktop. EDIT sometimes the harddrive power cable comes losse so i will not boot at all of course i can just the the cover of and push it back into place it happens alot i am begining to notice a pattern in when it happens though

hey evad are we having a race to see who can post the most posts till we get our warn meter put up cause if we are i do not wish to continue
well no, I am just starving for conversation really. it may help if we add a bunch of filler to make the posts look important. like this, see I'm not really talking about anything, but if someone were to just glance at it they may think I am saying something important. If they are really reading this I hope they see the humor in it and don't punish me too severly. What do you think?
good idea
My boot time is about 15 seconds (WIN98 SE) and i run an AMD 550mhz
but my Linux system (ubuntu) takes about 3 min. |
wha thats quick my system takes longer to load win98 than yours eventhough it is faster it is probably the fact that the harddrive is nearly full
that's a nice thing if you have windows XP.
hmm yeah though i only have win98se
ram used as a HARD drive????? No Way !!!!!!! I'd rather use the good old fashioned HDD's , what happens if it fries since DDR ram can be a little tricky , goodbye info , a waste of money and I wouldn't want to store anything important on it.
only takes me about 20 seconds for me with Windows ME on a P166
