Intermission
Back in the days of Win95, there were two big-selling screensaver packages: AfterDark, and Intermission. When Berkeley Systems was purchased by EA (and subsequently killed), AfterDark was never heard of, again. But Intermission...? If nobody owns it and it isn't ESA-protected, can be we get a copy uploaded? Sure, some of the modules are out of sync with the speed of new systems, but it showed a great deal of creativity.

Both screensaver collections, the latter with a few mini-games included. Great stuff, and I'm looking for them--especially the latter. Too bad EA swallowed up Berkeley Systems, the makers of AfterDark, and killed the company.
|
Since EA bought them up are they ESA protected? I might be able to satisfy that request if they are not protected. |
I loooved these!
Up there with Johnny Castaway. |

OK, and finally, they are Windows "games" not DOS. So if Kosta (and/or whomever) is fine with it, I may see what I can do. |
That's fine Taskmaster.
I don't think they really mind if it's Windows or DOS. I mean, I'm submitting Re-Volt and I submitted Turok, so I think it's plenty fine. |
Well, but on the other hand my Castle of the Winds review was never added because it's a Windows game. Or maybe they just didn't have the heart to tell me it was poorly written...
|
I don't believe anything you can write would be poor.
How long ago was that? Every Windows game I've uploaded has been on the site, even stuff that work in both DOS/Windows, so far it's been the two mentioned afore, and Alien Trilogy. |

But we do have several Windows games on the site.

Ah yes, you might be right, actually. That was before AR came into being, I think. I don't care, really. I'm sure they'll have their reasons for not putting it up, so I'm not going to start pestering them about it the way some people on AR used to do...

Oh, all right. I'll ask about it on AR, then.
|
Fair enough. If the idea's vetoed, it's vetoed, and we move on. After all, there are plenty of games out there that are of interest to us all.
|
There's a stand-alone add-on to After Dark for sale at http://www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/tottwistdr.htm
|
Not an add-on, but a standalone. It's also not got a game section in it, and it's not interesting, either. Got it for review once, discarded it.

All - I have a post on my efforts to get AD working with WinXP here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=45538.0 That post contains links to AD 3.0, AD Star Trek TOS, and the upgrade from AD 3.0 to AD 3.2. I also recently obtained the AD Disney, Totally Twisted, More After Dark, and AD 2.0 versions from another abandonia member, and can provide if anyone is interested. (Not sure the best way to do this, but something could be arranged.) I also am looking to obtain any of the 4.x PC versions (4.0, 4.1 Deluxe, 10th Anniversary) and/or the Looney Toons Version, if anyone has access to those. Thanks in advance and hope this helps. |
TaskMaster - I don't think EA actually swallowed them up, from what I have gathered, they were bought by Sierra, later sold to CUC, and most of the current info points to Vivendi.
They were one of the headline acts in EA's big spread back at an early E3. I remember it well: they had released an attractive Windows screen replacement system, and were in the process of working on yet-another-RTS-clone-like-Warcraft. The former wasn't well publicized, and the latter looked and sounded dull. By the following year, EA had withdrawn support for the game, and absorbed Berkeley Systems' people into its general company, closing them down as a separate entity. |

All info there points to: Berkeley-Sierra-(possibly focusmm) Berkeley-(possibly won.net)-filpside.com-prizecentral-iwin.com-uproar.com-(possibly vivendi) Berkeley to - CUC (not sure who they are). No mention of EA anywhere, but then again, I don't know that any of that is accurate. |
Maybe he's right; my memory could always be failing me in my old age. :D Or he could be wrong, or the company might have split, with assets going in two directions. Whatever the case, BS is gone, and Sierra, too, is a shell of its former self under completely different management.
